Void Glitch - How to Catch Arceus in Pokemon D/P

- By utilizing the recently-discovered RETIRE trick and carefully manipulating loaded map data, it's possible to encounter Arceus in the void in less than 10,000 steps. Not only that, but you can catch Arceus an unlimited amount of times!

* A Pokemon with Teleport or Fly
* Must have used the Explorer's Kit at least once

Important!

In the steps below, you'll see some redundant "1 N" or "1 S" steps. These are singled out because they won't appear on your step counter when you do these single-steps.
The exception to this rule is the Pal Park entrance. If you've already been to Pal Park, then the script with Prof. Oak won't run again and it'll just be a normal step that does show up on your step counter.
Additionally, you must do the steps below EXACTLY as they appear. If you go any more or less than the number of steps instructed, there is a high chance that you'll have to start over from the Save & Reset position. This means if you accidentally go 1 step over and then backtrack 1 step, then you probably have to reset and try again.

Technical details
===============
The RETIRE trick is performed by using Pal Park's RETIRE feature outside of Pal Park, which will immediately activate the 4th script loaded for whichever map the RETIRE feature was used in. If there is no script that's loaded 4th, nothing will happen. There are only 3 scripts in the Hall of Origin, but luckily, the 3rd script is loaded twice-both as the 2nd and 4th loaded scripts. This loading order allows us to encounter Arceus by using RETIRE in the Hall of Origin.
Additionally, the reason why this method is so short compared to the methods used to obtain Shaymin and Darkrai is because of a better understanding of the Void itself. Many of the other methods travel upwards, which contains highly volatile data segments, including progress flag data. However, by traveling downwards, we're effectively encountering certain parts of loaded map data, such as the adjacent warps, the flag index, loaded object and sprite attributes, etc. By carefully and cleverly manipulating what parts of certain areas are loaded, we can force certain values to load very near our location in RAM and encounter those values as our new map ID.

Q. Does this really work?
A. Yep! Just follow the guide step-by-step and you'll be able to catch Arceus in around 15 minutes or so.
Q. Will this work in Platinum?
A. Not at the moment. Platinum patched the ability to move freely within the void, which prevents any void-related exploits.
Q. Can you get a shiny Arceus?
A. Yes. Shiny locked Pokemon weren't introduced until Gen V.
Q. Is there any way to soft reset for a shiny Arceus?
A. Yes, but it must be during the 1792 S step in a Jubilife City area with outdoor Jubilife City music. Saving anytime after that or in a different area will have unpredictable effects.
Q. Can you save during Pal Park mode?
A. The SAVE feature is disabled in Pal Park mode, so you can't save while Pal Park mode is in effect.
Q. Can you transfer this Arceus to PokeBank?
A. If you level it up to Lv 100, then it will be able to be transferred to PokeBank.
Q. Can you do this more than once in the same game?
A. Yep!

Don't think anyone has posted this, but here's a team and strategy that can help catch Arceus for those still at 2 Badges.
1. Ghost type with curse (Plenty at the Lost Tower at Solaceon Town) Not only is it resistant to Hyper Beam, but curse always takes a good chunk of HP.
2. Pokemon with Teleport. There should be Abra around Jublife City.
3. 4 Pokemon to take a hit from Arceus (Any will do)
4. Alright next buy Dusk Balls at Solaceon Town. Then change your DS(i) clock to night. This will most likely be the easiest way to capture Arceus. Unless there's a way to get the Masterball early with the Void glitch.

Only thing is, unless you hack a level 100 pokemon in it that will obey or soak up hits afterwards, you won't find a single pokemon that's resistent to all of arceus' attacks or can survive it. It's lvl 80, with all base stats at 120, which is roughly 220-250 in most stats, good luck surviving a single hit from it. A lvl 20-30 pokemon will never, ever, be able to survive a hit from a pokemon 50 levels higher unless the higher level is a bloody magikarp. Let alone an arceus, even not very effective damage will kill. So you MUST have a master ball, that's just the only way to capture it with the Void Glitch.
Alex Bekiaris by "take a hit" he means stall for turns while you throw dusk balls. obviously the Pokemon won't survive more than 1 hit
Stall for turns in what way then? only thing I can think of is either dying 5 times and reviving pokes, or getting Lucky with consecutive detect / protects
Alex Bekiaris yeah, they're just filler Pokemon so the battle takes longer, which means you have more turns to attempt to catch him. in an ideal world you'd have ghost Pokemon (I think hall of origin arceus uses only normal type moves?) or Pokemon with sturdy. you can't do much better than that because, as you say, anything you have at that point will die in one hit

well, reading the description can help if you haven't already :D If you've already been to Pal Park before just do the alternative 64 E instead of 63 E. If your question was if you've officially been to pal park after you caught Arceus then yes, the game will know you already visited Pal Park before.

Markogames123 As far as I know, it involves the fact that all tiles in the game are set at all times, and doors are merely used as a teleporter for your X and Y coordinates. For this reason, when entering the void, you're inside of the boundaries that makes the rest of the map invisible. By knowing the placement of the tiles and load zones(judging by the recorder of the video's statement on traversing RAM so as to avoid "safe" save zones), you can go across the entire map in such a manner that you never enter a pre-set save zone, which will allow you to reach inaccessible areas like this.
I am, by no means, the authority on this though. I'm mainly going off what little knowledge I have in this subject and what the recorder said in a few comments.
Gray Tiamat187 actually, the void way more complicated than that. The map id's the game shows are in patterns, because it reads from RAM. We save and reset to change our void to sinnoh overworld, and traverse to a section of ram where map id's are based on loaded objects of the last map id, which once again influences what the next map id will become. Every place in the game has it's own void, but depending on map matrix and other technical stuff they can be different from each other. This is why other houses will have different map id's without a reset, but because you save at an area with an outdoors map (which we use for the manipulation) it won't matter, as those all utilise the same void.

Thank you so much Cryo. I am so glad that I was able to do this (I'm horrible at tweaking but I managed to tweak with a Slowbike near the bottom on Jubilife). I'm honestly ecstatic right now. I'm in love with the generation 4 games, but one thing that I always thought was a poor choice by the creators, was the fact that some Pokémon were exclusive to week long events that occurred 10 years ago. It isn't fair to those playing the games now, myself and many others included. It's amazing that you discovered this method more than 10 years after the games' release. I may be commenting a few months late, but my god, mate, using Pal Park through code manipulation to trigger a flagged event--absolutely brilliant! Ten years! I been watchin' the void research for ten years. Ye did it. We thought it was over in 2012 after the discovery of Stickyman's "dummy" Hall of Origin. Bravo.

Guys, if you have a problem or you can't use the menu at a certain point, you did something wrong.
If you can't open the menu to retire at a certain point:
-you took a wrong step
-you did your math wrong
-you're not in the right place
-you messed up one of the directions
-you didn't go 64 instead of 63 (or the other way around)
-you didn't memorize something right
-you flew away after the Arceus battle or blacked out
Trust me, I made all these mistakes and thought it was fake until I finally decided to be careful and take my steps right. This is just for people who are suspicious of this video and tried it out but did it wrong. It's well worth the try since it only takes about 15 minutes anyways.

The Pokemon obtained through the void glitch are completely legitimate, as they are the exact same Pokemon as being obtained through event methods (which is now no longer possible). The void glitch has been officially acknowledged, and although a glitch, it is in no way considered hacking or 'illegal'. Pokemon (such as Shaymin, Darkrai and Arceus and potentially others) obtained through the void glitch are 100% legitimate.

Here's a little thing for others that messed up:
It happened to me that I noticed immediately after saving and resetting in Step 2, that after a few steps, I didn't end up on Seabreak Path, but rather on Floaroma Meadow. I immediately resetted and tried again, same thing. So I knew that I had messed up. However, I remembered that I was in Turnback Cave during my 2015 West in Step 2, so I just went back the entire way until I was in this cave, and using an Escape Rope, I could leave the void and end up in the normal world again.
So, in case you notice that you messed up, just try finding a cave and use an Escape Rope! It can save your game file!
Or use Fly/Teleport. Or if you don't have an escape rope you can just use Dig.
Or better yet if you have none of these things, you can just find an area in the void that takes you back to hearthome city.
No one believed this was possible including me. Thank you for showing us this, the greatest part is that it takes a lot less time than Darkrai or Shaymin's void glitch time.

Just as an addition, you should always open the menu, go into the pokex, and exit to make sure the area you are saving in is safe. If your game freezes, or you are stuck in a box, that area was not safe. The tweaking glitch is different across games and files, so it's always better to be sure so you are not stuck in the void. After checking, you can then save normally.The only real "safe" place is the 430 save point (I'm getting technical here lol) Used in the shaymin and darkrai paths :)Never use the explorer kit method, an older method of checking, as this method is less stable.It's real cool to finally see Arceus around, everyone has been looking for him for so long XD

Does this work by entering in the void from any other building (not Poketch)? I noticed Hall of Fame trick can be done by entering in the void from every single building, maybe this one is different cause it uses a more specific pattern?
I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't, since the data patterns in the initial void are mostly the same across most indoor areas in the game. I'd feel pretty confident in saying that it "should" work from any other building's void.

Ok so i successfully performed the glitch and obtained Arceus, amazing work, well done everyone :) So if I wanted to shiny hunt this Arceus what would be the quickest way? Do we have to save before we talk to Oak? :o
That's a difficult question to answer without explaining exactly how this all works-basically, you'd need to save before you started doing all of the necessary map swapping, because encountering any area that's safe to save in (map ID > 558) after the 1792 S part would cause the glitch to fail. (see the GCL link in the description for more details) This means it'd probably be most optimal to save sometime during the 1792 S steps before you encounter the Underground music.
Playing through the game and doing an encounter in the Great Marsh freezes my game, any fix for that?
Is this after performing the glitch or before? I've tried going to the Great Marsh after catching Arceus and don't seem to have any problems.

Let me guess, you put Arceus in the first spot and made it hold a plate? It's a known glitch that this setup will freeze at any encounter in the Great Marsh.

During my 1792 S, at around 1152 steps, my mom and Keira stop me and give me Glitter Powder. Then the game proceeds to crash.
Any way out of this besides resting my data?

I am shook. 10 years later, we finally found a way to catch Arceus. Incredible. Congrats to whoever found it. Now all we really need is a way to catch Mew, Celebi and Jirachi in Gen IV 😂😂😂

I have a question: Is it possible that this will corrupt your save file?
punbearable (oh well this is old af) ok first off you can't save in a Mystery Zone. If that would be possible, we wouldn't need to utilize the Battle Tower for Shaymin/Darkrai. It is safe to Save in Mystery Zones btw. (like when using the japanese version or the Battle Tower mode in every other version) Also, If you follow the Route, there is no possibility that you get a BSoD. You'd have to Travel far away from the Route so you can't get one by simply doing a step wrong or so. Also, what do you mean it isn't safe save in an indoor area? Of course it is. You can save in most Indoor Areas without a BSoD. What you said is true, you can mess up your save file by getting a BSoD, but you absolutely cannot get one by just going this Route. Also, you got a few of your facts wrong. I'm writing this so that this is cleared up :D we don't want anyone to get false information
If you wanna get specific with what areas cause BSoDs, there are no Maps that cause a BSoD when encountered in the Void, exept for these:
-Canalave City Gym (Map ID 35)
-Bebe's House/The House next to Hearthome City Pokemon Center (Map ID 115)
-Sunyshore City (Map ID 150)
-The Pokemon League/ The entrance from the Pokemon Center (Map ID 176)
-Pkmn League - The room after Aaron (Map ID 178)
-Pkmn League - The room after Bertha (Map ID 180)
-Pkmn League - The room after Flint (Map ID 182)
-Pkmn League - The room after Lucian (Map ID 184)
-Fight Area (Map ID 188)
These Maps cause a BSoD/Softlock when saved in them. With this Route tho, you'll never encounter even one of These so you are as safe as it could possibly get.

Yeah, it spread like wildfire in Japan. To my knowledge, no English-based gaming news outlet (Kotaku, Polygon, etc.) has covered it yet. That'd attract a good bit of traffic from English-speaking countries, but no such luck yet, eh?

There are glitches in RB like Brock Through Walls that have only been discovered within the past few years. And those games are 20 years old.
At step 3 go 1792 south, my game freezes at 799 steps south

Cryo Quick question, do void mechanics work the same in platinum, I heard shaymin could be obtained through void but only on diamond.
The void mechanics noted in the GCL thread hold true in Platinum, but the caveat is that all Mystery Zone areas now have impassable tiles (i.e. no movement is possible).

catching Arceus in the void is way more satisfying than regular gameplay
