Thank you for doing this. I have a couple ERLITE/ER4 that I pulled from client locations and can breath new life into these little powerful routers and keep as hot spares for my customers to swap out in an emergency to get them up and running while I get a new replacement of their equipment. OpenWRT is a great project. Using PPPoE is always a hassle to setup on new interfaces and this is a huge help to show how easy it was to setup in OpenWRT.
Glad that it helps. I am also keeping an eye on the EdgeRouter 4 and plan to test it out with OpenWRT. The price for a used unit is still expensive that is why I have yet to grab it. By the way, that is the problem you are facing when setting up PPPoE on those Edge routers? Is there a specific value need to be configured in order for the PPPoE connection to work. I don't work with Ubiquiti routers frequently, therefore I always use the Setup Wizard (on the Web-UI) to configure PPPoE and it was working great.

Thanks for this. Hardware offloading is still broken on the ER-X 8 years later. It didn't matter much in my case years ago, but now the router is a severe bottleneck for my internet speed. I just installed OpenWrt and if offloading doesn't break IPv6 I can get another year or more out of this router.
Hello, thank you for your guide. after sysupgrade -F open... step, i take the error "remote side..." and after this the edgerouter cant identify the eth , i connect my pc to eth1 or 2 its starting identifying but after couple of seconds the led of eth1 turns off, and after couple of seconds on again and trying identify and the contiouns all the time. can you help me please with this? i do everything step by step from your guide.

I hate that ISPs are STILL using PPPoE connections for network auth... My fiber provider does this. I've always used DOCSIS my entire life and registering the MAC of the cable modem was always the easiest... running PPPoE on a special vLAN is such a pain... but I do like that with fiber, I can route the line direct into my UDM-PRO and setup the VLAN and PPPoE connections there and discard all the ISP equipment. This is the only plus to using PPPoE... but limitations for hardware offloading and other things with PPPoE kills bandwidth when you get past 600Mbps where I run 1gig symmetrical
I read that flow offloading (software and hardware) does not work with IPv6 and I see that you have IPv6 and that may be why you do not see "0%" CPU usage.
Thanks for this great guide. I was able to get OpenWRT installed in 20 minutes. The only problem I have now is that if I go to update packages, it fails. If I click on System > Software > Update lists it says it failed to download and to check my network settings. But it's working fine and I can access internet with it. So I'm not sure what is wrong there. But thanks a lot for your video.
@@VanTechCornerHey, yes, i'm sorry I should have come back and commented. I had to disable IPv6. I tried opkg update manually on the command line and noticed it was trying an IPv6 address, which was odd, since my ISP doesn't hand out IPv6 IPs. Disabled it and it worked. Thanks.

I would like to upgrade but first learn how to config the new release with the same switch / vlan aspect the previous one. Would you help us and set up mwan3 and remote access as well. With OpenWRT 21, a lot of devices / branch are migrating to DSA. Even though it looks complicated at first time usage, you will find it easy to config.

The EdgeRouter X seems to have been discontinued by Ubiquiti. Is there something similar in terms of hardware specs and price that is compatible with OpenWRT?

Does OpenWRT support PoE, meaning if it is installed over the stock FW, does the POE port stop working because OpenWRT does not support it? If it does not, is it dangerous to flash OpenWRT on them because the ports are electrified by hardware but without any software to regulate the power output? What happens to the lone passive PoE port on the Edgerouter X when OpenWRT is running in it? If OpenWRT supports PoE, can it modify the voltage of these PoE ports, particularly converting the passive PoE port on the Edgerouter X to AT/AF? I presume the voltage regulator on any such a router is unchangeable. In other words, the FW, be it the stock one or Open WRT, can only turn on and off power to the port, but cannot increase or decrease the voltage because that is imprinted into the hardware.
@@jasonluong3862 im running in the same needing. Better stick with edgerouter x, wich is an amazing hw even compared to the new ones, and acquire an wifi router like linksys wrt1900 or similar, adding then 4 more eth ports+wifi, then deploy openwrt+vlan. ;)
@@jasonluong3862 enabling PoE on the erx is a single character in a config file. You cannot change the voltage - it's passthrough. You could, however, certainly trigger a script to change the state of PoE on that port when you wanted.
This should work, just for the 2nd flashing, you should select the OpenWRT 21 for ERX-SFP. I have a quick check and there is a problem with SFP (workaround available). If you are not rush, wait for my video with the SFP version (will take time).
Thanks for the video. I flashed the temporary image as explained on the video, but I use a Mac and can't use winscp. Cyberduck doesn't work because apparently the small temporary version doesn't accept the command SCP ( because it uses dropbear which doesn't support it). Is there anyway I can move the final image to the router on a Mac?

I need a windows machine to try winscp like you did on the video. Is there any other way I can move the file to the router in the meantime? No worry. You can always go back to stock firmware. See this guide help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019289113-EdgeRouter-TFTP-Recovery In the worst case, you will need a USB to Serial (TTL) adapter but it will come back to life soon.
@@VanTechCorner thanks for advice, I got all the way up to the reboot section after the firmware was loaded but it didn’t reboot and now I don’t have access to any of the lan ports accept eth0 which is the internet port

I happend to find OpenWrt very buggy, not stable on about 3 devices. Also, there are lots of videos on how to install it, how about doing real things, or upload CLI commands on how to do anything

Can you do an easy tutorial on how to get openwrt to ER4.... From my understanding the process is a little different than this.

A lot of routers are running the same SoC and support OpenWRT: Mikrotik RB750Gr3, GL-iNet MT-1300, Redmi Ac2100, Mi R3G, Mi 4A gigabit, etc

@@VanTechCorner I’ve managed to recover the edge from the soft brick using TFTP and successfully installed the Openwrt and so far so good using SQM 😊
