1. **Giordano Bruno** (1548-1600): An Italian philosopher and cosmologist who proposed the idea of an infinite universe with countless worlds. His views on the universe and theology led to his condemnation by the Roman Inquisition, and he was burned at the stake for heresy.
2. **Galileo Galilei** (1564-1642): A pioneering Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer who supported the Copernican heliocentric theory, challenging the geocentric view supported by the Catholic Church. He was tried by the Roman Catholic Inquisition, forced to recant his views, and spent the last years of his life under house arrest.
3. **Michael Servetus** (1511-1553): A Spanish physician, theologian, and early proponent of Unitarianism. He rejected the doctrine of the Trinity and argued for a non-traditional view of Christianity. His writings led to his arrest and condemnation by both Catholic and Protestant authorities. Servetus was burned at the stake in Geneva.
4. **Hypatia of Alexandria** (c. 360-415): A prominent mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher in late ancient Alexandria. She taught Neoplatonism and defended pagan philosophical ideas against Christian criticism. Hypatia was murdered by a mob of Christian zealots, possibly affiliated with the Church, during a period of political turmoil.
5. **Johannes Kepler** (1571-1630): A German astronomer and mathematician known for his laws of planetary motion. While Kepler himself was not persecuted, his mother Katharina Kepler was accused of witchcraft during the European witch hunts, partly due to Kepler's defense of his mother led by his scientific prominence.
