    for me, the sum of it all is . . . i greatly admire Kenya and the people there, but I'm in love with Uganda. Whatever the reasons, that's what it is for me. Even among the languages, although Kiswahili is a lovely language to speak, read and hear, I can't get enough of Luganda. One advice i'd give to anyone going to either place, learn at least the basics of the languages. This can, at times, be better than money. I love Uganda! nkwagala okukwagala. nva Kampala! L

    Well, you may be aware that the border between the two countries was non-existent before Kenya became a colony and the Uganda Protectorate was created in 1894. The colonial experience in both countries before independence in the 1960s was very different. I think that is why our visitors tend to feel more at home in my "laid back" native Uganda rather than in the neighbouring Kenya. The border between the two countries, a creature of our colonial past is about 100 years old, both sides of which is home to people belonging to the same ethnic groups. I think that is why we tend to get along on both sides of the border as our ancestors did for centuries before its existence. Therefore, both countries are not as different from each other as they may be perceived to be by our visitors, since we belong to the same ethnic groups, separated by a border, which was not of our own making.

    Some historical perspective on the different attitudes to foreign visitors.
    Kenya and Uganda had very different colonial experiences. Uganda was a protectorate while Kenya was a colony, thus had British settlers like South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi). So Uganda received almost all her land intact at independence. Kenya on the other hand had almost all their fertile land confiscated and parceled out to the British settlers, the so called White Highlands. And they only gained independence after an acrimonious Mau Mau independence war with dirty atrocities committed on both sides, but especially by the British. So after a compromise was agreed on to achieve independence, very little of the stolen land was ever given back, as a lot of the British chose to stay put, and the corrupt post independence government reneged on their promises to give the rest of the fertile land left behind by those white settlers that were compensated before departure, back to the peasants. The new African elites instead conspired to share it among themselves.
    So kenyans have inherited from their parents a suspicion and hatred for foreigners, especially whites.
    As an illustration of the land issue, almost all Ugandans are buried on family land in their villages and are really shocked to hear that dead Kenyans are buried in community cemeteries because most have no land or villages to call home. Also why the biggest landowners by far were the families of the first independent government
    Furthermore the existence of a big Asian community in Kenya after independence ( remember Idi Amin chased them out of Uganda) meant that all factors of work and life became very commercialised. For the millions of landless kenyans the only way to survive was to develop a tougher and more uncompromising attitude. And due to the large poor populations in urban centres, huge slums developed, with the unavoidable increase in hardcore criminal gangs.
    Ugandans on the other hand are very laid back, partly because if things don't work out in the city it's not the end of life. They can always go back to the village. And Uganda is way more fertile for growing your own food. In Kenya, if you don't hustle, you die.
    This is my personal take on the difference in attitude and safety based on history, and on my personal experience as a Ugandan that lived and studied in Kenya for 6 years

    I'm Kenyan yeah and we are all warm and hospitable but Uganda is famously laid back and fun, everyone knows that. Ugandans love any excuse to party, they are the real Madagascar King Julians of Africa or East Africa. As for Kenya everything is divided on class levels.... obviously the lower you go the lesser the diversity but the warmer the crowd... the Chinese have Chinese hang outs, Europeans have their hangouts, and generally the upper middle class here have their own... there is a lot of co-mingling but broadly speaking there are distinctive class divides and little hang outs of all sorts of people hanging with people who they fit in with. Best thing would be to find a local and they would take you where both the cost and crowd would aptly fit you, it would be fun but not the full picture as you got to find out on your own.

Uganda is good if you don't want to spend a lot of money coz food is affordable & rent is cheaper compared to Kenya. Rwanda is my favourite East African country but not ideal for some things. I'm Kenyan and I think your observation is spot on. I've heard other African Americans describing the two cities with the same exact words as yours. Kenyans are not as polite as Ugandans maybe because of our we-owe-no-one-nothing mentality. Something else about Kenyans is that they are so patriotic and political. Most Kenyans would rather stick in Kenya than seek for "greener pastures" abroad--which are not as green as other africans, especially Nigerians think.

We were both on some soul searching stuff in Tanzania. We are now married with a daughter and now living in Ecuador. We have permanent residency here in Ecuador. Absolutely love it. My solo trip to Tanzania changed my life and I am beyond grateful. I hope all is well with you! 🙏🏾💜
      P.s our goal is to return to East Africa. However, the residency process is so difficult and complicated. Hopefully they change it because,MANNNNN we would love to go back and live long term.

    So true about the comparisons. I know an African American guy from California who was overwhelmed by the Ugandan ladies he decided to get 3 wives. He must have been confused by the politeness and booty hehe. Nway he went ahead bought land in Mbarara, built houses and now only goes to California for work. He is always in Uganda for holidays.

      lee jones once you get to uganda, you have become Ugandan and can do everything you have dreamt of but it will all come crumbling down once you decide to join politics and oppose the president. Land is very cheap though especially due to the fact that most nationals prefer land close to Kampala forgetting that land further is cheaper and could do more with it.

    Truth is Uganda was naturally gifted by God eg 1fresh waters, 2good fertile soil, 3good climate, 4green vegetation/forests , 5natural minerals and 6friendly people. But the NRM govt of Uganda that has ruled for 33 years hasnt used well the above 6 factors to develop Uganda. Its because these people ruling Uganda came as refugees from Rwanda and Burundi and enterded Uganda in 1960s and took power by force up today. Instead they have rooted all Uganda's resources to develop Rwanda. So Rwanda is developing on the expenses of Uganda money and resources. Mostly the people in power are not real Ugandans hence we showed them love as refugees and turned their back on us then took power through bloodshed in 1980s.

    I'm a Kenyan and yes Kenya is expensive in everything especially food and real estate/rent I wonder what drives these prices. Kenyan women are quite fitness and health conscious hence tend to be slimmer. In terms of foreign nationals, Nairobi hosts the UN headquarters in Africa and a huge diplomatic community and other international NGOs so there is a huge international mix. You must have restricted your movements to a very small radius to come up with these conclusions. We have a lot of Europeans, Asians, Sudanese, West Africans, Somalis and Ethiopians in Nairobi (the largest refugee camp is Northern Kenya). Try and move more next time

    When Kenyans see you with long hair they see artists. Diversity in Nairobi is different. Diversity is more obvious in the outskirts as opposed to downtime. You will find full neighborhoods with foreigners such as Nigerians, S. Sudanese, Ethiopian, Chinese, Somali etc

  • @mwangigitau286
    @mwangigitau286 6 лет назад +8

    I like the analysis most of which is true btw, but there are a few things i disagree as someone who has lived in both countries - first is on diversity, now amn't sure where exactly you lived in Nairobi but kenya is more diverse compared to uganda one because of its tourism industry its more vibrant compared to uganda's also because most East Africans view Kenya as more economically stable and therefore offer more opportunities than uganda not forgetting the refugees who have seek assylum in kenya from sudanese, ethiopians, somalis and even congolese. Secondly on people staring at you - i am convinced that there could be other reasons because its definately not because of your hair nor your looks, i personally don't think you look any different from ordinally Kenyans, Kenya in its own right is very diverse because it has Cushites , Bantus and Nilotes tribes this is a classification of African tribes, in Kenya you will find kenyans that are ethnically somalis together with other cushites such as the Rendile, Borana, Oromos who are more light skinned and with straight hair also you find these traits with the coastal tribes that have these similar qualities and for this reason it is very difficult to tell who is a Kenyan and who isn't just by looking at them. It is for this reason for example that Kenya has had to suffer from terrorism because foreigners will invade without anyone even noticing.

I've been thinking about Uganda with its many lakes and Murchinson Falls. Good to hear that it is affordable, safe and diverse food options like Lebanese, Ethiopian and the people are friendly. I love diversity in people, culture and food. Do you recommend any specific places in Uganda to visit? Thanks again.

    What is your advice on tips to save for traveling to these places? I live in Wisconsin. Where do you believe i should travel first within Africa?? I absolutely adore African men and I want to mingle with some. So any suggestions? I will appreciate it.

    • @JayFocused
      @JayFocused  6 лет назад +1

      I'm not an African man myself so I can't give you much advice there, but most big cities in America will have some type of an African community if you search for it on Google and Facebook.
      As far as traveling to Africa from the middle of the USA, you will more than likely have the best luck flying to D.C. or New York and catching a connection there. Chicago may also be an option but D.C. and NY will have direct daily flights to places all over Africa. Plan in advance and you should be able to find deals to places like Senegal and Ghana in West Africa.
      As far as where to go first, well that depends on your motivation. Do a bit of research on what sites you would like to visit or things that you would like to do. If you want a beach vacation then of course you want to look at coastal countries like The Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast,Kenya,Tanzania for example. All of these countries are stable and have an established tourism industry.

    You get what you pay for. The quality of life in Nairobi is far superior to that in Kampala. Infrastructure: The dusty Kampala streets with their notorious pot holes and floods during the rain season are problematic. Nairobi surburbian real estate is top notch compared to Kamapala surburb real estate. Fast wi-fi. and no electricity roll- outs in Nairobi. High quality amenities in Nairobi. Easy access to international flights from the airport. Nairobi climate is cooler compared to the muggy hot Kampala climate. Coming from LA -county Pacific coast. I think I can settle well in Nairobi!!!!

      American Guy Travels perhaps people were just looking at your dreadlocks, I have Kenyan buddies who have had dreadlocks at some point and they stood out more.... not for anything but just because fewer people have dreadlocks. However dreadlocks are not new in Kenya, this was the hairstyle of the freedom fighters... Mau Mau... they had looong dreads... google them. At some point there was this gang who’s signature was dreadlocks and sniffing tobacco, that was in late 90’s and early 2000’s, so at that time dreadlocked people would get harassed by the police which resulted in the gang members to chop the dreads in order to remain anonymous, police harassment stopped thereafter. The gang is called Mungiki, they still exist but not as powerful
