Why is sharpness an issue with filmmaking? I don’t want sharp lenses for filmmaking. Maybe for food photography sharpness is great, but not filmmaking.
Oftentimes focal length / aperture play a large role as well as price. For example, many zoom lenses have a maximum aperture of f4.5 or similar when at the widest focal length (24mm in the case of 24-70). The more you zoom in (say up to 50mm), the more your maximum aperture changes too (f6, etc). As that aperture value increases, you have a larger focal length, which means less bokeh (the pleasant, intentional blurring of background or foreground in film). Most zoom lenses that have a constant maximum aperture, such as this sigma 24-70mm, which can be set to f2.8 across all zoom ranges (and therefore shallower depth of field and more bokeh), are more expensive than a zoom lens with a standard f stop that changes with focal length/zoom range. Since a prime lens (let’s say a 50mm, one common for film) has only one focal length, it will have the ability to sit at f1.8 or f2, allowing control over depth of field, for less money compared to a zoom lens that has the ability for a wider open aperture. Hope this makes sense.

I am a complete noob, so can anyone explain why people value single prime lens over lens with multiple ranges in layman’s terms?
@@brettlarson912 this was extremely helpful, and very easy to follow. Thank you so much 🙏🏼😊
You must use video samples more than your face.
