New subscriber and I have two Rat 1 and have beat, abused, used and they still work fabulous. This knife for the money, any money.. delivers everyday for a working man. I’ve pried nails, sprinkler heads, window frames, scraped off paint and they always work. Mine are beat up and after heavy use, I sharpen them and it’s back to work for the Rat 1. It’s my Big Boss!!
Ontario Rat 1 also comes in serrated edge. And you can get it in D2 steel as well. Been using it for over 20 years and of any knife, budget or expensive, value per dollar, you cannot beat the Rat 1 or Rat 2.
I absolutely love my rat one, I've been carrying it as my work edc knife for about 3 1/2 years. It's absolutely a monster and amazing knife, 100% worth the money and has never let me down!
When I heard Ontario is going out of business, I decided to get one because I had always heard what a great bargain they are. I love it way more than I expected. It is the opposite of a Bugout, being pretty stout. I don't see any point in comparing them. But it's a great tool on its own merit. You hold it in your hand and you just feel a very primal, "Mmmm, knife. Good." I recommend it to anyone who wants a fairly big, hefty pocket knife.
The Rat-1 is a great knife. For the budget you will not find much that will beat it. I personally like the way it feels to open the Rat better than most of my other knives that are running on bearings. They are inexpensive enough to buy multiple to include in get home bags, tool or tackle boxes or in camping supplies. I also like That it has a 90 degree spine that will throw sparks with a ferro rod.
I’ve never had a RAT I, but I own something in similar dimensions/design philosophy. It’s the Coast FX411. The thing is an absolute beast, built out of the cheapest materials possible. You wouldn’t win any Instagram fashion arms races with the thing, but you CAN use it to hammer a loose nail back into a fence. (Ask me how I know.)
One of the first knives that got me into EDC! Super strong and solid AF! I have the black blade with the carbon fiber handles. It's insane , the quality and build you get for the price is awesome!
Rat 1 in D2 steel is a great and reliable EDC knife, if you have no problem with its size, and thanks to its considerable weight, it feels good in your hand while working.
One of my favorite EDC knives is in AUS8, it dulls quick when cutting nylon rope but sharpens easy, best feature of AUS8 I found is it works well around water, doesn't rust.
I found out the hard way that it will rust if you subject it to salt water. Mine went swimming in the Pacific several times, and I had to completely disassemble it to remove all of the rust.
I have the RAT 1 but I use it for camping purposes because of its size. I have a RAT 2 with black blade but coating is wearing off. I also have a RAT 2 with D2 steel blade which is my favorite. I put deep carry clip on it. For money and performance they are great contenders.
Awesome review and choice. I carry my RAT 1 everyday and have the belt clip flipped the same way you do. I also bend out the tip of the belt clip a little bit so I can draw it with my middle finger, come out of the pocket and flip the blade up with my thumb, just like snapping my fingers.
Check out the Ganzo G727, it's an Axis style lock alternative to the Rat 1 (slightly shorter) in 440c on bearings for $20 or D2 for $26. Excellent quality.
The clip will fit. I picked up a Benchmade deep carry clip for mine and it fits fine. You just need to open the holes on the Benchmade clip just a bit. It now carries perfectly and doesn't get in the way in use. I got the D2 version. I've only had to touch up the blade, it not to hard to do. Great knife!
Great video and fantastic knife. I actually saw videos and people saying that the Rat 1 or 2 is an awful knife hahaha, I'd like to see their budget king knives lmao.
Good evening Sir! I’m new to your channel, but really enjoying it! I’m a huge fan of that knife, it’s in my EDC as well. I don’t think you can find a better knife for the money! Thanks for sharing, and my best to you and your family!
I own several Benchmade, Spyderco, and Cold Steel knives. I carry the RAT1 90% of the time. Carries the best. It's thin but feels good in the hand. Cheap enough to loose or break without crying. Haven't hurt it yet with several years of use.
A little skateboard tape on the handle, on the opposite side from the pocket clip, and on the tip-up side for your thumb to grab, makes the Rat 1 a joy to pull from your pocket. If your skateboard tape slips due to weak glue, a small dab of Shoo-Goo will make it stick forever. It is the perfect everyday working blade.
OKC Rat 1 is an essential in any knife collection or as an edc knife. Has stood the test of time regarding quality and value. Got my first on 5 years ago.
I've been using the RAT 1 for two years... I did grind the tip from clip, to spear point though. Not too pricey for its price, easy to maintain, bigger than the RAT2 which is better for me... And still available in stores even today!!!
My rat 1 with d2 steel arrived today. Its huge. I'm fiddling with it to get it to flip open every time. It's a real work horse but too big and heavy for EDC. I love it
I really like my Rat 1. I have much higher end knives, so I use the Rat as my travel knife. It is a great knife, so I'm comfortable using it, but if I lose it on a trip it is inexpensive to replace. It would hurt much more if I lost one of my Microtech or Zero Tolerance (or even one of my Benchmade) knives.
Just bought the Ontario 8847 Rat-1 with the serrated blade for $25.88 at Amazon. Great ratings on Amazon nice price. Something to add to my "fall" carry collection for those of us into knife fashion!.
I have a Rat-1 in D2 with dyed-orange scales and it is my go-to knife for camping. But I still love the Bugout for EDC'ing because of its weight. Semper Fi
Own both RAT 1 & RAT 2. RAT 1 is my favorite it tends to fit in my hand like a glove. RAT 2 feels a tad small after using the RAT 1 for a while, still a great knife in it’s own right. Put a snaggletooth on that RAT!
I have 4 okc rats a couple 1s and a 3 and a 5 absolutely love them they are all D2 steel and do hold a good edge the fixed blades a nice and thick as well for batoning
Find a Sanrenmu 7010 aka The Poor Man's Sebenza and see what you think of it. I have had one and carried if for almost 10 years, and that knife has never failed me on any level.
I'm sure other people have allready mentioned it but the RAT 1 and 2 both have a legendary reputation and was extremely popular (I want to say) between 2015 and 2017. It was all over youtube and the forums during and after my highscool years. It used to be the go to recommendation for many people making suggestions to people looking to get a good first knife or even just a first step into knife excellence for a budget price. It is one of the few that have lasted as long as it has other then other knives like the spyderco delica. Sadly ontario is now closing their doors so soon you may not be able to buy them anymore so there goes an option to recommend to new people or people looking to step up past first couple of rungs on the ladder of knife design. They may have been able to turn things around sooner if they had released their S35VN version sooner but it unfortunately came little to late.
I have the Rat 1 in D2. It's a toolbox knife for me. My carry knives tend more towards premium steels, m390 being the preferred. And BTW, a lot of people have talked about the Rat. There have been a ton of videos about this knife, it's one of the most famous budget knives in the US.
I hate to admit it, but the Rat 1 is better than most of my other very expensive folders, and finds its way into my pocket a majority of the time. I got the D2 blade steel version. Just such a great knife. Punches was above its class. Recently procured the ESEE Avispa. Also a great knife.
Many years ago The ApostleP (Rob Bixby) called this knife 'Tenacious killing excellence'. He was right then, but things have moved on. Both the Rat1 and the Spyderco Tenacious are now available with better steels, and it has to be mentioned how heavy the Rat1 is. For just a bit more money, the modern Cold Steel American Lawman in S35VN steel (or even better CTS XHP) would be a better choice.
Hey man. I just bout a Rat 1 today at the pawn shop close to me. It's the D2 version with a satin blade and black scales just like yours. I only paid $20.00. I had the Gonzo that looked like the Rat 1 before and it was fun, but this Rat 1 is better than I thought it would be. I think you made a good decision. I just can't do the Bugout for any reason. I require more cutting edge. Thanx for the video my Bladed Brother 👍 ⚔️ ✝️ 🇺🇲
The main pro to the Bugout was super lightweight EDC design -- yet with decent cutting power. I would compare it more to Spyderco Delica 4. Basically it was designed to hike with " bugout bag ". Has axis lock A RAT ( " Randall Adventure Training " ) is more a hard-use tactical folder designed for the heavier tasks more in the field. Liner lock is very secure. That being said they both cut cardboard boxes equally well ~ I find ! As in an urban city setting mostly they will be opening packages etc ...rather than a military or specialised tactical purpose that would actually more differentiate the two innovative designs. Both are highly replicated so be aware of copies especially online as these models are often in mere replicas. Note : some CHINESE copies of these knives are so good even experts cannot tell them apart. Both are EXCELLENT choices; very popular worldwide and sell easily.
I’ve owned 2, wife stole my first one. They are great, no other way to put it. My kitchen sharpener keeps it in a slightly “better than working edge” state as well. I try other knives, but I keep going back to this bad boy.
Hello again Marine X Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I haven't seen one of these before. I do like the full tang. The price is right. Again thank you 😊
Absolutely amazing knife. I have a R2D2 that i gave no mercy and it functions perfect. I beat on it for two seasons at work and though it shows lots of wear the blade is perfectly centered and the detent and action are still smooth. I have a ZT and BM in my small collection but if i had to take one on a deserted island the Rat would be my choice.
Oh yeah, the Rat 1 is a dang good budget EDC I've done a couple of mods on mine by inlarging acess to the liner lock & contouring the edges of the handles with a little decorative file work. ⚔
Better late than never. They do have D2 versions and micarta scales too. Some versions come from China though, and that factory doesn't seem to have the quality. Great breakdown video as usual. 👍🏼
I honestly feel like I've been missing out, I was really close to buying one as a broke teenager but chose to get to cheapo Chinese knives instead, and still haven't owned a rat but that's going to change real soon. especially since the company just changed hands
