So glad to see you interviewed Marco. He's been around for a very long time on YT. He was about the only source on here to review wargames back then, so whenever Marco reviewed a game I had to check it out. But I don't share his outlook on the future of wargames. Innovation happened, but being a niche, it's harder to spot and takes longer to surface?

I don’t always agree with Marco but it doesn’t change how interesting he is as a conversation partner! He was actually in 2 episodes my very first season of the pod if you want to hear our first convos. :)

calandale was the first but Macro came four or five months later. But I agree with you on outlook on war gaming and kind of agree with Marco.
I agree with Marco that old school wargaming is likely dyeing out but there is so many playing war gaming now. Warhammer (GW) have never been bigger, yeah, it's miniatures war gaming but war gaming nonetheless, GMT and MMP publish a lot of games and there's a lot of kickstarter war games so, war gaming are not going everywhere.
I recently bought Plantenet from GMT and it's a very innovative game.

What are some examples of the old school war games that he's talking about? I'm not familiar with GMTs back catalogue on account of the fact that I've come into the hobbyist board gaming sphere through the efforts of Quackalope and Boardgameco.

Basically old Avalon Hill stuff leading to GMT. Actually, Fred Serval (Homo Ludens) and I have a video series called “Wargame Archaeology” where we are working through the history ourselves!

I think a lot of people think an app will help them learn a board game. Maybe a built-in tutorial will. But I find that an app taking care of all the game stuff makes me lazy, and I don't learn the details at all. When I have to understand the game enough to move all the pieces around and implement the mechanics, then I truly internalize (and appreciate/enjoy) it more.
