    Lab Man here! Important to state on Ulamog that it's ANY card in exile, so as an Eldrazi deck will run Ugin's Labyrinth, consider tucking away your Eldrazi Titan like Emrakul, then Ulamog enter WAY TOO BIG, and you can just Emmy back.

      Fun fact: you can do this in MH3 _limited_ using The Creation of Avacyn - just gotta be willing to take 10 first. Ulamog will in fact see _itself_ in exile.

    Quick note on Wheeler’s very accurate call out of what I was getting ready to comment on Ulamog: it doesn’t care who owns the card in exile so if you’ve exiled something large to fury or force of will or a delve spell, you still get the value.

      There is the interaction that if you blink Ulamog it sees that it was in exile and gains 10 counters because the check is before it enters the battlefield.

    43:56 (effectively) Nothing happens if you copy a battle. Like Vanishing Battles only care about when the last counter is removed, not being in the state of having no counters.
    EDIT: The "nothing" that happens is the land (that is now a battle) is put into the graveyard by state-based actions because it is now a battle with 0 defense counters that is not the source of a trigger that is on the stack.

    • @FarmallFarmer
      @FarmallFarmer 6 месяцев назад +3

      Does nothing happen or does it go straight to the graveyard due to state based actions as a battle with 0 counters on it? I know when you cloak a battle with Etrata Deadly Fugitive, you can't flip it for that reason because it has 0 counters and just dies

    I think maybe you're underestimating Spymaster's Vault. It seems like a slam dunk in Aristocrats it gives you huge card selection after you've sacced most of your board and allows you to get your Blood Artist or other outlet creature out of removal range of a lot of things. Paired with Sheoldred you gain a lot of life and if your deck that likes to sac creatures also has a graveyard subtheme you get to stack your yard.

  • @SpawnofHastur
    @SpawnofHastur 6 месяцев назад +5

    Wheeler's summary of the set review at the end about how the previous Modern Horizons sets introduced a bunch of cards that are just so universally good that they've become ubiquitous is an interesting point of departure between the pointing philosophy of Canadian Highlander and it's sibling format from down south, 7 Point Highlander which uses a 60 deck with 15 sideboard cards and has a different pointing system - and, more importantly for the purposes of this comment - different pointing philosophy.
    From what I can tell, the biggest factor in pointing for Canadian Highlander is power. A card is pointed (and or depointed) based mostly on how powerful an effect it is.
    7 Point Highlander - probably as a result of the 60 card deck size meaning there's A, less wiggle room in how you build your deck because you don't have to reach as deep in certain effects (in 60 cards, for example, you don't need to run some of the dinkier cantrips like, say, Peek) and B, you see specific cards more often in any given game - pointing is done on a combination of power and ubiquity. (There are other factors which change how and why cards are pointed in 7PH to Canlander, most specifically the fact that it is basically impossible to run decent sized proxy events in Australia meaning that we have to look into how expensive a card is when trying to depoint it, but that's a seperate issue.)
    In 7PH, cards that end up seeing play in pretty much every deck get pointed, if they're above a certain power threshold. Ragavan was seeing play in every deck with red in it, so it went to 1 point - then 2 when it was still seeing play in every red deck at 1. Wasteland was free to include and was seeing play in almost every deck, so it's 1 point. A bunch of the Initiative creatures (WPA, Seasoned Dungeoneer, and Caves of Chaos Adventurer) were so good that any deck that could run them was? 1 point. This has even gotten to the level of some cards being pointed (or considered for pointing) based on how ubiquitous they are despite some players thinking they don't fit the power level issue - the two that come to mind to me are Deathrite Shaman, which has gone to 1 point for being a Swiss Army Knife, and Mental Misstep which is being considered for pointing because every deck is very deep on one drops.
    Why am I going on about this in specifically a Canlander video? Mostly because while I mostly myself play 7PH, I love 1v1 non-Commander singleton as the best way to play Magic because it gives you a more varied experience than 4x 60 formats and the lack of a guaranteed build-around like Commander has, and I'm interested in spreading the word, as it were. If anyone who enjoys Canlander spends any time down in Australia, look into 7 Point Highlander. It's definitely not the same, but it feels very similar while still distinct, and the scene down here is thriving. Also, as an advantage for those of us with small or less nimble hands (like me), 60 card decks are way easier to search and shuffle. :P

  • @tomireland3644

    I don't play canlander, and I know that these reviews are for a very different environment to commander and Gladiator, but still really enjoy these reviews. It's interesting for me to hear a chill review from knowledgable people with very different perspectives on the cards than me.
    Plus I do still learn stuff like, oh yeah, that red land I thought was bad at first glance because it exerts is probably actually really good 😅

  • @TheBluemechanic
    @TheBluemechanic 6 месяцев назад

    I remember I was excited about the archway when I first saw it, then the more I thought about it I realised the most expensive spell I ran in the artifacts deck which didn't have an easier way to cheat it into play or already had a built in cost reduction effect was Chaos Defiler and even then the improvise would only have reduced the cost by 3 at most because improvise doesn't reduce coloured mana

    I've seen some people experiment with Urzatron in the format. Albeit usually to immense disappointment, I'm surprised Planar Nexus still didn't get a mention, as I feel slapping that in with a set of urzatron would make it way more consistent. • @fwg1994

    One of the things I think is kind of interesting with Arena of Glory is the 2 drop mana dorks. Like exert it, then pay one of that red and a green for Fanatic of Rhonas, so it gets haste, and if you have another 4 drop, you get to immediately tap it for 4 mana and use the other red to play a 5 drop with haste. It's niche, but being able to immediately get mana off of your dork to be able to deploy your actual threat off of the other mana seems pretty interesting.

    I'm very high on the black land. Yawgmoth/aristocrat type combos that you can often only do 10 or so times without a blood artist now get to have this land that digs 10 cards deep for that blood artist to win the game or just throw (up to) 10 counters on your yawgmoth or carrion feeder and crunch in.
    Also a bit surprised to not see Horizon of Progress get a mention (or clarification?). I'm very curious for your thoughts on whether it's worth considering over a regular horizon canopy, etc.

    Emrakul is the worst of the MH3 titans for reanimator decks, in my opinion. And it is BECAUSE of its protection clause. Protection from permanents cast this turn means that your reanimation auras like animate dead just don’t work on it. It etbs, aura falls off due to sbas, and then Emmy sacs itself and you lose your board and never even get the cast trigger.

      Manifest has never been limited to just the top card of your library. Most of them say "manifest the top card of your library", but even in the set the mechanic released in (Fate Reforged), there was Ghastly Conscription and Jeskai Infiltrator which exiled cards face down and then manifested those cards.
      Later on in the Commander 2019 set, we also got Scroll of Fate, which manifests a card from your hand.
      The same is true for cloaking a card (manifest but for disguise instead of morph), which had all three options in its initial set.
