Really love watching your videos. Never dismantled a watch not brave enough. The movement in this is stunning, bonkers in part but just beautiful too. Thank you
Thank you
New to this channel but loving how British it is compared to the likes of Wristwatch Revival! Text messages buzzing, washing machine in the same room, dodgy editing, out of focus shots and lots of “oops” moments Proper man in a shed stuff!!! Brilliant stuff!
Haha, I’m taking it as a complement..! Not sure on the dodgy editing though I spend ages on that bit. 😂
@@MyRetroWatches love it! Your expertise and enthusiasm shines through! Never heard of Ricoh watches. Love would love to have one but not sure about them on eBay!
You should hire a sportcaster to do this as a play by play commentary. It was great fun to watch.
1:53 So true! I have a couple lovely faceted Lord Matics and you’re lucky to have just a couple small chips.
Finally a Ricoh restoration 😊. Not a funky one though, Ricoh has really quirky designs.
Also have a Tiger Eye with a rotor that uses those red diamonds as ball bearings and some fell off, IDK how to rebuild that, cannot find the ball bearing online either.
I'd be terrified 😂
I also got some Richos they had quite a presence in India, the movement might be a little complex inside but one thing i have noticed is that they had very beautiful dials back then
I am really thrilled! Exact same watch, Ricoh automatic with blue dial was my first watch in 1980!
It stopped working decades ago. Watching this video I realized watch repairers in Kolkata, India couldn’t manage servicing😢.
Want to watch re-building video now.
Is rally difficult to service right now also in india sir, because i have it and want to service it in mumbai
Great little watch. I am very confused by the number of the day of the week complication, but a visually interesting find!!
I’ve seen a few of these number day wheels on Seikos. I am more inclined to think it’s a Japanese thing. I know they used to use the Emperor in their date back in history.
Like every part was stuck lol, but you got it taken down, first time I’ve seen a watch maker struggling with every part
Love the dial and faceted crystal.
My Seiko was glass and even with the diamond polish you sent me, I never got it to a satisfactory condition do ended up ordering a NOS one from Japan.
That is such a weird but wonderful movement😂🔥
Sheesh ! can he do it? Looks like a Pandora's box to me. Must say, you got guts.
This one was "fun"
A very interesting watch and caliber. Especially the simultaneous date and day change function.
I recently did a service to one of these and the truth is that it is a pleasure.
Thanks Mike another great video
Glad you enjoyed it, off to part two perhaps?
omg what an amazing movement. The person that designed that was a pure genious.
That's a really nice watch, I think Ricohs are very under appreciated. I've never seen a red one, maybe rare? The logo on the dial might be the lotus flower for the Indian division of Ricoh?
I've got a couple myself, a green gradu-tint dial and Ricoh Monaco, a round silver coloured watch, nothing like the Heuer Monaco.
Don’t think it’s rare but it’s a nice unmolested example. Also think they are underrated
Thanks as always Mike. Looking forward to sitting back for Part 2.
P2 is now available so enjoy .
Very interesting and the oddest watch movement ever. The history of the watch company is also interesting. I don't think I would buy a ricoh as who would want to service one?
Mike, that movement is built like a tank.
quite!
Mike, that movement is totally bonkers! I was left speechless, jaw agape, when I saw that pallet fork. Never seen anything like it. Interesting how the “hole and post” is employed instead of banking pins. So weird. Also, tight fitting plates give me so much heartburn, especially on the rebuilds, with how much force is needed to lower them down (while at the same time avoiding a crushed pivot). Itching to catch up with part 2.
Thanks Chris. Definitely a fun exploration this movement. The rebuild was a challenge too!
Wow - what a crazy movement and strip down !! That pallet fork was completely bizarre ! I was like this 🫣 watching all those springs coming off - nice job Mike !
Thank you
Love it, i have a fondness for facet crystals (especially ones like that which are easy to polish up)
Next 👍
Wow un rompecabezas realmente complicado, suerte con el armado y cuidado con los resortes. Nos vemos en la parte 2.
Thank you. Enjoy part 2 and the 6 springs!
Brilliant!
Amazing watch design
It was a popular and cheapest Japanese brand in my country Pakistan in 1970/80. The mechanism was good and easy.
This movement is right up there 6138 Thanks for making it so detailed. This would be my reference. I am a visual learner.
definitely a fun one. You should watch the Citizen video "A movement full of springs" still gives me the jitters to this day that watch!
So nice to see someone so genuinely excited to be doing their hobby and sharing it with us, thanks. Can I suggest tarnished if you are looking for a word that isn't corroded?. I haven't looked it up but I think corroded means stuff has been eaten away and tarnished means stuff has been added - anyone know for sure?
Tarnished is a good word. Also as someone else suggested oxidised.
Pleased you liked my enthusiasm for this one., it continues in part 2!
Excellent! Interesting movement for sure and nicely done. I think you got the length of the video and the balance of the content just right. One tip on removing the date wheel there is a hole on the wheel and if you position that hole over the spring loaded arm underneath you can push the arm away with a small screwdriver and that will help release the wheel. Still takes a bit of prying up though.
Thanks. Yes I was not thinking about the hole , only noticed it on assembly😂
Very interesting. Very nice looking. I'm going to refer to this one as ither "trip wire" or " booby trap".😁
Yes there are a few gotcha's in the movement. Wait until you see the rebuild video (already available to review)
Wow, excellent part 1. That movement was really unique. Really funky pallet fork. Thanks!!!
Liked Part 1 a lot. Now onto Part 2.
It was a very common brand in the Asian region
Ricoh movements are quite common in Taiwan since an old Taiwanese watch brand TELUX uses Ricoh movement during the 70s and 80s. I love the Ricoh R61 caliber in the video. It is durable and performs very well after proper service. Greetings from Taiwan! Big fan of you channel!
Thank you. Pleased you liked this one. I enjoyed shining a light on this very underrated brand of Ricoh
Thoroughly enjoyed part 1 Mike and very much liking the multiple camera angles as well. That movement does look like a spring fest! Here's hoping for minimal ping-offs during the rebuild.
Thanks Mark its appreciated. These two videos took I think around 20 hours to produce so a real labour of love. Nice its appreciated. Enjoy the rebuild video its out now to view.
Great first part, Mike.
Certainly an interesting movement. Citizen-level spring fest. And really a weird pallet fork.
Looking forward to part 2 tomorrow.
All the best…
Thank you Simon. Yes another great spring fest!
That’s some funky pallet fork for sure. Love the closeup video work.
Thank you.
I don’t know what to add. Great learning experience. All I knew Richo for was copiers. But like every big Japanese conglomerate, they dabble in everything. So no surprise there, but the movement is over engineered with how secure the bridges are held in place. Looking forward to part 2.
Thank you. P2 is available now so please enjoy!
This looks a lot like a '70s Orient 3star.
So much for simplicity is a sign of understanding
That is a great phrase and so true.
Hi Mike, first time commenting but long time fan of your work. That movement is something else. Overly complicated but i am sure very rewarding at the end when it is put back together and running again. Looking forward to part 2.
Thank you and I am honoured you would choose this video to make a comment on.
Yes this movement is a challenge but it’s what makes the hobby so enjoyable.
thank you for the honest videos. We learn a lot here by also showing the mistakes. What I can't find anywhere is the best way not to mix up the parts and screws during cleaning. Especially which screw goes where. What's your advice?
Take photos. Use a tray like mine and keep the screws in compartments with the parts the are for.
I do not always clean screws. Most of the time 80% off the screw is in the plate and if the heads are not dirty. It’s then easier to sort them out after cleaning as per your tray photos.
If I have ones that do require cleaning then I do this in my ultrasonic and compartment by compartment so no chance of mixing up.
If it’s a model I am familiar with then I just chuck them all together. I know so many Seiko movements I never sort them out.
@@MyRetroWatches Thanks
It was amazing! Thanks to share it with us! It was fantastic to see how you find the way to disassemble this interesting movement. It was one of your most exciting videos.
Thank you. Good feedback is always appreciated and I am pleased you found this one interesting. Wait until you see part 2 the assembly!
fascinating. frustrating and a bit scary.
Interesting movement. I bought several Ricoh watches back in the 70's when I was traveling to Japan frequently. Still have 2. One has a broken crystal but still runs and the other runs but both in dire need of service. One has this movement. Wore them a lot! Can't find anyone here in upstate NY to work on them. they were everyday work horses. Hate to abandon them to the junk box. I don't ever recall them being sold in the US (I never saw any). Apparently popular in Asia and some in Europe. Look forward to the reassembly video.
The assembly video is now live so enjoy that. I don't know much about Ricoh history or where they sold them. I have found all mine here in the UK.
My advise on servicing is to join some FB group or online forums such as WristSushi. You may find experienced hobbyists prepared to take on work. There are 1000s of competent hobbyist in the USA its just connecting with them.
Another great video, you’re one of the reasons I’m now pursuing a career in watchmaking. Thank you!
WOW that's made my day. I have always just wanted to share my fascination with watches and inspire more into the hobby so hearing you are wanting to do this as a career is fantastic. I wish you all the best with that and I am envious. If I had my time again I would love to do this as a career.
@@MyRetroWatchesThank you for your best wishes. Just waiting to hear back about a position so fingers crossed. I’ve really found what I want to do with my life so once again, thank you. Looking forward to part 2 :))
I'd like to have seen how the pusher came out. That pallet fork was certainly unusual, the amount of bushing seems high. Or is it just my own inexperience. Definitely an interesting movement. Looking forward to the rebuild and I'm clicking that link straight away. Cheers Mike. Thank you.
Thank you Jeff. Pusher is just a standard one held on by an E clip.
Great Video. one fascinating watch movement !!!!! and not one spring got away from you !!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it. I think I have good control on springs generally however the one for the calendar pusher is a monster!
Looking forward to it.
Great stuff as always mate!
Hello sir, i find your videos fascinating and entertaining, thank you for your hard work
Went out side to watch the stars for a bit, going to re-watch the watch now :) Nice watch :) Specially the pallet fork.
ÓTIMO SERVIÇO PROFISSIONAL 👍👍 🇧🇷
side walk astronomy, i met him yesterday at cronoglide he showed the san martin that he won on your show it was live yesterday on cronglide ... awsome guy wim aka side walk astronomy
Was this on Chronoglide channel ?
Wim is a really nice guy and I could not have had a more deserving winner.
@@MyRetroWatches yess it was on crono glide 20k so we had a party he told the story that he won the watch little promotion for your channel ... Wim drove 4 hours on the mophet to be there the hero!!
@@ElderPinto254 thanks I have just messaged Wim and he has told me all about his little adventure.
The man is a legend!
he just a cool old scool guy lets call him wim the legend !!@@MyRetroWatches
Very interesting. It is certainly sad sometimes for oldtimers to see big companies having to, or just abandoning for strategic reasons, certain product lines. As a photography hobbyist also, this is specially evident in that line with Ricoh, Konica, Minolta, Kodak, etc., etc.
Things come and go and companies cant sit still or they die. especially when it comes to tech.
Don't forget the entire collapse of good brands like FED and Zorki
🍿👀
Interesting way to bank, one center pin vice two.
Are you not worried the service doors won’t open when driving? They will be against the wind.
Looks amazing though!!!!
Great, i got 3 Richoh🤩😁
Fantastic work on this quirky movement! I had never seen a pallet fork like this before.
FYI this is a caliber 61.
Edit: when there's a spring that looks like it's a "flyer", what I sometimes do is put the movement inside a plastic bag (freezer bag). It makes it a bit akward to work and it's definitely an amateurish technique, but it works for me.
Thanks I found out a few days ago its a 61 but Ricoh did not make it easy. I used to use the bag trick but I now feel I have enough confidence to deal with them but its a bit more high pressure when the camera is rolling!
I've seen pallet forks like that in very inexpensive Chinese-made movements. I have a $30 skeleton watch with that style of pallet fork.
The common theme I found when I posted a photo a weeks ago on my socials was that many pocket watches have this fork. It must be due to the orientation of the escape to the balance. On this movement its to the left whereas most its off to the right.
Wow. There's a lot going on here. What a fascinating little movement! It's like they threw out the rulebook and decided to build from scratch (only with more springs).
Hahaha. indeed. Typical Japanese engineering. find what works and design it yourself. Respect to them its why I have so many Japanese watches.
@@MyRetroWatches my favourite quote from this one is "let me get my big screwdriver" *grabs a 2.5mm*
@@endy_fx hahaha! thats brilliant
Note, the balance hasnt got an ajustment lever on it.
This mouvment reminds me of Rolex
It makes me wonder who sits down and designs a movement like this? It must take quite an imagination as well as technical skills.
See ya after work for part two!😊
Not only could I not put that back together , I prolly couldn't even get it apart 😀🙏
Hahaha. Or if you're like me you'd put it back together and you'd remain with a few unnecessary /spare parts. Better yet it might turn out to be something other than a watch. Cheers!
Interestingly, I have the same rotor problem with an Accurist watch, Cal 2789, so I’ll be hoping you can fix yours and let us know how you fixed it.Unfortunately I don’t do the social media platforms.
I have a Ricoh day date automatic watch with a push button above the crown to quickly move the date forward. It was running when I bought it, but now it won't wo to kl.
it was like they designed the movement from first principles, not looking at what others had done to simplify things.
Thats a good point and to be fair I see this with Japanese movements. Especially Seiko who look at it from an engineering point of view and simply for function. All the while the Swiss just want it to look beautiful but add more wheels and complications to make it less reliable long term. hope you enjoy the rebuild video.
My Pentax is a Ricoh
It's s cool looking watch, I really like the red dial and faceted Crystal but, the numbered day of the week function is pointless as there's already a day marker with the Monday though Sunday marker.
It just seems like useless function that could've been used for something more useful like a day/night cycle with a Sun & Moon or just a AM/PM marker.
It might have been a Japanese thing. They did once use a different calendar to us. I have seen this type of number of day on some Seiko's too.
Loved both parts Mike. It is really interesting to see these more challenging and difficult movements, especially with all the springs! 😂 Turned out really nice. One question, is the lum 100% safe on watches from this era?
As far as I am aware radium was banned in the 60s
It’s quite easy to spot so this watch I can tell is absolutely safe.
I haven't seen part 2 yet, but I reckon you broke off the pivot on the balance staff.😭
What would make you think that?
@@MyRetroWatches You applied pressure to the side of the bridge when removing it and it kind of "clicked" never a good sound and having freeze framed the video I can see the staff taper but not the actual pivot. Having just watched the second part of the repair it looks like I was wrong. Those pesky reversing wheels "Blued" ? That was a bugger of a fault, I cannot see why anyone would ever do that if the bluing thickness altered the dimensions that much. Or maybe the bluing seized the wheels? 🤔
Ordered one as "Mumbai special" for 17€ as a bargain curio and got pleasently suprised-original and matching case, dial, hands, cover "Ricoh 9" model with the same "61" movement subtype, running great, without minding to rest half a day off the hand and not needing to be manually wound.
As a teaser for this gone watch brand, they worked with Hamilton! I think Japan industrial number on the bottom is missing from the models assembled outside Japan-Ricoh held only 3 percent of Japan watch market and was popular elsewhere. I really don't know why it was not popular, maybe the slow day switch overnight and slow day setting? That date button is rather logical, although quite obtrusive on my model.
I have also read that "61" movement was also used in German watch brand "Dugena" but with the date button set to be flush (pressed by pen instead of a finger).
Industrial strength innards
Indeed!
Wow my company uses their printers lol
I want a Ricoh. Been trying to find one. Nearly impossible. Bummer.
Generally on eBay
Can you restore mine too??
Like some parts in Porsches, engineers way over thought it making it way more complicated than it needs to be.
Ricoh…they make or made cameras and lenses?
Yes the same company
How good is this movement, compared to a similar budget Seiko mvt ?
In many ways a bit better as it has more features like hand winding whereas the 70s seikos with their basic movements did not.
Ricoh made copiers, too... same logo
JJ L C Has the same type of fork....
I wonder how often he has to refer back to the video to see where a part goes?
A lot less than I would. When you've handled as many movements as Mike has, you get an innate sense of what seems right. Sadly, for me, I have to pour over my pictures constantly and wipe up the drool when I forget to swallow!
Not so much but I do take photos along the way. If you watch the rebuild video in parts I even show myself looking at photos on my phone for part placement.
The word is oxidation.that is what the degradation of the hands and various other watch parts.
Wow, Mike--what a challenge! Interestingly, just prior to watching your video here, I watched one from Gary at I Like Watches, in which he recounted Richo's horological history. In case you're interested, here's the link to Gary's video: ruclips.net/video/DLZ2LrFvLfA/видео.html
I think it is not necessary to pull out the pillar of router my chum.
If you refer to the part with the 3 tiny screws you have to remove. There is an oiling point for the jewel below
@@MyRetroWatchesyou can oil the jewel from the other side of the plat it was only a suggestion I am not forcing you I think you will not mind it thanks
Yep, leave it to Ricoh to find the least intuitive solution to all problems 😂😂
I have same recoh watch and i want a service.. share me courier details and service charges
I bet if you took this to a watchmaker they would have charged you a fortune to clean and lube this watch
Most would turn it away saying they cant get parts or the cost of service is more than the watch is worth.
What drugs were the designers on… I want some?
Me too!
Nice Job, but why am I thinking Trump when I look at the Dial? It´s not Orange!😁
I have no idea and please do not put thoughts into my head even though I am not American.
@@MyRetroWatches Sometimes I just cant help myself. Sry!
Had to stop watching as there is way to many adverts and it just spoils the vid
Really? I will have to look into that. RUclips place then automatically. I will attempt to override as part 2 is a longer video
@MyRetroWatches thank you. Love watching your channel but was haveing one roughly every min and a half. Keep up the awsome work my friend 👍
@@kristianlewis5520 this sounds very alarming. I do wonder why no one else has mentioned this but give me 24 hours and I will have it sorted somehow
Mike, excellent video and nice to see a Ricoh from the inside. Right after I finish this part will go for part 2.
This movement or caliber is completely bonkers.
I'm also loving the multiple camera angles, just as
@markwade1376 has mentioned before.
Best regards
