    Thanks for such an insightful video! It helped me reflect on a few things: we don’t always have to follow the latest popular trend or pattern, flat waistbands are indeed more flattering for some of us and invisible thread... yay! 😃

    Your review of this pattern was really helpful, I’m with you when it comes to an elastic waist I don’t think they do anything for my curves , having said all that I thought that the set looked really lovely on you, it’s strange how others see us and how we feel in different outfits, but if I don’t feel comfortable in something it tends to “wear me” as opposed to me “ wearing it” I do hope that makes sense. I also thought the straps are two short and finally thanks for the tip on sewing the elastic together, it always frustrates me when I’m trying to do that tasks. Xx

      Thank you so much Anne, I am glad you found the pattern review helpful and thank you for your lovely comment on how the set looked too. Maybe I will wear it a bit more around the house and see if I can build up confidence to wear it out - it is a different silhouette for me so that might be affecting my opinion of it too. I hope the elastic tip works for you - it is such a fiddly task! Thanks for watching. ❤

    It's a lovely set. I think if I were you I might wear the trousers as a leisure suit but with a more plain top. The same with a longer strapped top and plain bottoms. Tlilleys flat fronted Safiya trousers are a favourite of mine. Great review and keep sticking to your gut feeling. Thanks

    Great video Amelia! It's a bummer when you spend time on a garment (or two) that you don't instantly love, but you took away some good lessons and made an informative video that may help other sewists too.
    This pattern doesn't appeal to me personally but I agree that sometimes it's good to try something out of the comfort zone and see if it works. Especially if you have a back up plan, in this case relegating the set to lounge/sleepwear. It might end up a blessing in disguise. I find it hard to set aside time to make PJs when it's more tempting to sew something for outside the house, but this way you got some cute pyjamas in a fun fabric that you'll probably get way more use out of (once you've adjusted the straps) than you would a regular out-of-the-house outfit.

      Thank you so much Chloe for your lovely, encouraging comment! It was a bit disheartening when I did the final try on of the set. But I do think there was lots of good learning that came out of it and I am glad if the video helps others!
      I definitely think the set will make for a fun summer loungewear set and maybe even on a beach holiday, so it wasn't a complete fail in the end! Thanks so much for watching. ❤

    Great video, really insightful into the pattern. I don’t think I’d be making this set as the pattern envelope did not fill me with excitement when I saw the plus sized model wearing the set. So many fit issues on the trousers. I know the Saguaro Set bottoms are really similar (and come with pockets! And separate waistband) so I’ll probably just stay with them. I like the shape of the top but I don’t think I’ll be buying the pattern purely for the top. I love the set on yourself and that fabric is beautiful. It’s very bold! Never managed to get Nerissa Hansen fabric to date (shocking!) 😂

    Thank you for sharing what you’ve experienced with the pattern. It just doesn’t look comfortable… I couldn’t wear this outside my home either. I have more than enough unintentionnal lounge wear and don’t need to add any more ;)) I am tired on wasting money on patterns that I won’t wear and don’t want to make again. Recently I threw out a bunch of patterns that I had no intention to make ever again… I want now to concentrate on the excellent ones I already have, and that are fitting me perfectly. For something similar I would go with the Pomonas Pants from Anna Allen Clothing and the Ogden Cami from True Bias, or the very lovely, comfy and cute Reynolds Top from Helen’s Closet.

    Thanks for being honest about your experience with this pattern Amelia. I had already decided not to try this one as it’s not my style, but there do seem to be a lot of people who love it. I’ve only made 1 TATB pattern before- the Indigo dress, and I enjoyed making it but found the armholes really shallow. Way to go for trying something out of your comfort zone. I don't gravitate towards full elastic bands either. If you have quite a bit of difference between the hip and waist measurement, it seems I always have too much fabric between the waist and hip area and it just doesn't look right on me. Works great for those that have smaller hips maybe. 🤷‍♂️

    • @sewamelia

      I think you are so right - maybe it is the waist and hip difference that is the reason why there is a lot of excess fabric in that area. Hi Amelia. I actually think you look lovely in the set but you have to feel comfortable in it yourself. I agree with you about the elastic waist. I’ve got the pattern but thought I’d start by making the Safiya trousers (with the flat front from her last book). I made them in a lovely floaty viscose crepe and they look lovely and I’ve had so many nice comments. So I think like you that the flat front works better for me (my size is really similar to you!). It's a shame that you don't like the set after making it, but I think that you're spot on with saying that we should trust our instincts. I never wear trousers that have an elastic waist like that because I look such a lump in them. You don't, you do look lovely in your set, but I can see that the trouser jumpsuit you wore on the second day looks even better on you. I hope that when you cut them down into pyjamas and lengthen the straps that you'll get more use out of them - it's such pretty fabric, and suits you beautifully.
    I know that there's bit quite a lot of controversy over the fit of the trousers, however I think that it's just the nature of elastic waist trousers where the waist casing just folds down, it's not very forgiving of a tummy. I very much have a tummy and always seem to be tiptoeing between plus size and non-plus size so have learnt that this shape does me no favours, mores the pity!

    Love the dart tip!
    As for the invisible thread... I wind the bobbin on the machine at slow speed so it doesn't stretch. If the top and bottom threads are the same you won't get the white pin dots coming up. Also, a bit longer stitch length and loosen the tension a tiny bit. Your trouser hems looked a bit puckered. As for the fit of the Esti? The top looked tight. Is it a pullover? The legs are so wide a longer length would be more flattering. I'm 5'3" and always look slimmer if wide legs go to the floor. Thank you very much for sharing. I hit subscribe!

    • @sewamelia
      @sewamelia  Год назад

      Glad you enjoyed the dart tip! I think I would have made the trousers floor length, but sadly I was limited by my two short fabric lengths, so made them as long as I could. It is so funny that the hems looked puckered in the video, as they are absolutely fine - I did lengthen the stitch length, which helped I think. The top fits much better now I have lengthened the straps, but will still be loungewear I think! Thanks so much for watching!

    You could easily change the band to flat-fonted by removing the elastic, re-cutting it for the back and fitting it in.

    • @sewamelia
      @sewamelia  Год назад

      I am wondering about changing the waistband - although I would need to add darts at the front and back as the pants are so wide that the waist would sit too far back without elastic to draw it in. I will definitely ponder that though as I think it would help me wear them more!

    My immediate thoughts of the esti, were, its not for me. I agree, it looks really nice on other people but not for me. I think once you have made some more adjustments, it will be good on you. But at least if you still dont like the trousers, you have a lovely summer top, once you have lengthened the straps. The fabric is great btw.

    Thanks for sharing! That fabric is stunning, sorry it didn’t come to good use, but I agree about the set. I have found that I only like elasticated waists on trousers if the fit over the hips is snug. You should even struggle a bit to pull them up over your hips, because that means there isn’t too much fabric to gather round your waist. It’s also important that the crotch seam has the perfect curve. This all makes a good fit over your bum which is a major issue with elasticated trousers.
    I’m just about to sew a little girl’s dress for a friend. She wants me to incorporate material from an over 100 year old heirloom blouse in white lace and cotton voile, so it’s a very particular make. I decided to make a dress with little ”wings” on the shoulders and buttons down the back so it can be used as a pinafore in the winter and as a summer dress as well. I remembered that you love Peony Patterns for there classic romantic style of dresses and had a look. And I found the perfect one - the Wisteria dress!
    Thanks for all your inspiration and happy summer! 🌸🌾☀️

    Great video once more, I do agree about this set that it would look like jamas on me too. I’m interested in your alteration on the top, it looks like you took a wedge out of CB & CF but don’t you cut this on the fold? So how does that work? Thanks xx

    • @sewamelia
      @sewamelia  Год назад +1

      I used my French Curve so that the wedge followed a gentle curve which helped when I lined the pattern piece up along the fold. It wasn't perfect, but the adjustment definitely removed the gaping and meant the straps were in the right place, so it worked for me. 😊
