Someone made my mom one who suffered from dementia before she passed 2 years ago. I loved it! Mom really liked it too! She kept it on on lap. Like you said…they only need to be the size of a lap quilt, not very big, kinda like a baby size. It’s a wonderful thing and it really passes their time. It keep them busy as the mind wanders when one is in that state. It would be a great project for a sewing group.
I'm in a volunteer sewing group and I've brought up the idea of a fidget lap quilt to make for one of our projects. Thank you so much for your time and showing how to make one. I will be referring back to your video on how to make one. Thanks again and God Bless You.
Tracy, This is so wonderful! I have a brother & brother n love that this Fidget Quilt will be excellent! One is a bit cold most of the time, so I am going to put this in the middle of a lite throw. Both used to enjoy NASCAR races, so I think I am going to try your theme concept. But I really gotta work my mind to come up with ideas. Thank you for loving & caring for others! You are sent from our Lord to me!
Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦 what a beautiful product. Love it. I have made sensory cubes and blanket for babies and they loves it. I love the scriptures, might be a challenge to find but going to look. I'm going to do this for the elderly. God bless you ❤
IDEA: Sew some grosgrain ribbon on opposite sides. If the user is seated in a wheelchair, you can tie it to the chair so it doesn't fall off of their laps.
This is awesome.. I have a granddaughter with ADHD who fidgets with everything. I am going to make this. ThANK you so much for sharing and showing us all the different things on it. Live it
Wow! These are super! Such great attention to detail and instructions. We are going to try to make some for donation at my church. So we will refer to this for sure! Thanks for all you do!
I've sewn a few fidget quilts in the past- good to see some different ideas. At the moment I'm knitting fidget/twiddle muffs for my local hospital as they are running short. Keeps MY hands busy, day and night. Thanks for this video
What a wonderful thing to donate to elderly homes/facilities for those who have Alzheimer's or dementia, especially for those who don't have family to buy one.
Thank you for your inspiring video. My mother doesn’t have dementia but is bedridden now at 98. Hard to know what to give her for her birthday but I’m going to do a small quilt and incorporate some photos of her great grandchildren that I can print onto fabric, like your Bible verses. My mother was always knitting and sewing until the last couple of years so I think she will enjoy it.
I’ve just decided to do my little quilt double sided so it doesn’t get too big, I’ve got 8 photos. It’ll take a bit more planning but hopefully it’ll work.
I must be living in a bubble. I have not seen or heard of these before. I will be looking at them for inspiration for my hyper ADHD grandson now. Thank you Traci.
Tracy, I think we wd hv as much fun making these as the ppl will hv playing with them, bc we can use our creativity and imagination to find things that are fun for them! TFS. 🌷
These are some wonderful ideas! I believe that you are truly an inspiration for many of us who would like to give back to our community. Thank you so much for sharing. Take care and blessings to y'all.
I love this! I made one for my mother who is in a nursing home a few hours away. Mom was one to create too and I had many of her scraps. One of those scraps was an applique horse head with fake fur for the mane. Another scrap was some fancy purple lingerie lace while another was a piece of seersucker. I used a few zippers and buttons as well as a pocket from my jeans and a yolk and waistband area that I laced a bandana through as a belt. It's amazing to see everyone's different ideas as well as hearing the thought process of these ideas. Keep it up ♥️
i do way to many hobbies, but quilting, crochet and card making are my favorites, However my daughter doesn't like the quilting, becvauase it takes up so much room . I make tons of tops but seldom put them together in a quilt, but plan to just donate the tops to the local quilt guild who donate a quilt for each mother and child who aare in the battered women's shelter. they get to choose a quilt. baby sized, twin oer queen. I went nuts anad cut strips out of a lot of my fabric, which had been in stgorage for four years since my quilting friend died. I just didn't have the heart to quilt for awhile. Now I am whipping otu strip quilts, stacked coin, and the pattern with strips in blocks pointed different ways, log cabin, and things like that. just to get the old fabric out of the way. my friendf and I used to have a little business making cat nap quilts, which aare small quilts with cat fabric, and wild borders with cat nip and a cat nip toy on a strip. . I made 27 iof them and will donate them to the cat shelter where people who adob t a cat can choose a free quilt , or the cat adobtion can sell them. I don't care which was. lol. so to answer your question . YOU BET, I love quilting and sewing.
I made one of these for my step father. His looked like an ocean scene. I added lots of snaps, buttons and beads, zippers, and pockets. He really liked the pocket with the family photo. I think the weight of the blanket (from the beads) helped calm him too.
Tracy, I have been thinking of making fidget quilts for quite some time now and your video has given me the added boost I need to get started with them. Thanks for your ideas as I really love the ones you've made. Thanks so much for sharing with us !
Hi Tracy, I belong to a group of wonderful ladies that get together about 4 times a year to make Fidget quilts. They are all donated to nursing homes, etc. We have made close to 2,0000. I have made about 90 myself. All of the fabric and embellishments are donated. (Sometimes I buy odds and ends of trims at Goodwill, etc. to use and share) We have strict rules about what can and cannot be used (nothing loose and no buttons) and they have to be washable. I like to use some crinkly squares in each quilt. I like to make them colourful and use a variety of fabrics with textures. We make ours using 16 - 8 & 1/2 squares. I really enjoy making them. Thanks for sharing your ideas. 👏❤️
Tracy, I love this idea. I will start doing these with my scraps and give some to the group home near my neighborhood. Their specialty is caring for dementia clients. Your heart is pure gold. 💛💛💛🩷💛💛💛🩷💛💛💛
😇 God bless you! So many of us will appreciate these ideas and tips. I especially love the “4x reinforcement.” I wouldn’t have thought of that. The one you shared at the end is especially thoughtful. My favorites throughout are the scripture blocks. You certainly added a lot of love and respect for the recipient. Thank you for sharing! ❤
My mom started with Alzheimer's at the age of 56. It did not take long and she was full blown. She died in 2000. I miss her so much. She was my Mother and my best friend.
So many great ideas in this tutorial Miss Tracy. These will be fantastic for the grands when we’re traveling. Thanks for taking the time to give us so many details on how to construct them. I always look forward to your videos, never disappointed!! Have a super weekend. 🤗
I have made these. Mine were for children and were about the size of a placemat. I donated several to elementary schools. They are fun to make and fun to collect all the fun, brightly colored things to put on them. Thanks for giving me some more ideas!
Fantastic idea dementia is a long journey, not just for the patient but for the families and caregivers (I know 1st hand)💔 I lost my mom in 2016 I miss her terribly had I known how to sew then,I would have made her something like this ty for sharing this Me being a beginner I appreciate your tips
Thank you so much Tracey. I knew about crocheted fidgets but hadn't thought of quilting. This is actually a better idea as can put so much more on it. Bless you Tracey
Tracy, I have been making fidget blankets off/on for years. I have a lot of neuro divergency in my family, and as you stated, these can really help. I got some new ideas from you today!! Thank you!!! And just couple ideas for you, the skinny round elastic- if your put a small knot in the end and then leave the knot inside the seam allowance, it not only adds another layer of security, it also adds bumps which some people like to rub similar to a worry stone. And if you make each unit smaller you can turn them into a book. My machine wont go through that many layers, so I used cam snaps to snap each "page" together. But if you wanted them permanantly together you could use grommets and key rings. The background quilting is an excellent idea!! Not only does it help hold the layers together and secure the ends of the fidgets, it adds texture, which people like to run their fingers over or scratch w their fingertips or nails.
Oh Wow..thank you for reminding me Trina of the knot trick in the seam allowance...I totally knew that but forgot LOL🤣 I wish I would have gave that tip in the video...hind sight.... Thank you for the book idea too...great tip❣️
@@TheSewingChannel You're so welcome!! I love making fidget blankets/books/mats!! A couple more fun ones are fidget cubes for kids, I use denim as the base. And have you ever seen the self binding hexi's?? I made a bunch of them w different textures ( minky, fleece, flannel, silky fabric, cotton etc) and then sewed together in a flower shape like a grandmas garden flower for a toddler who loved different textures. It fit very well on the high chair tray and gave him something to play with and explore while mom was cooking dinner. I used as many different colors as I could, and she used it to teach him basic colors as well. And bc its soft and floppy was also a favorite naptime cuddle item.
@@TheSewingChannel you're so welcome! I could come w ideas for days! I love making them 😍 I did not take photos of the hexi flower one unfortunately. But I do make the flowers themselves regularly. YT is the only socal media I use. But if you have an email I can send you photos of the reg ones and where I got the templates. ❤️
Great video Tracy. My husband has dementia and I notice that he flails his arms and pounds on the arms of the arm chairs, Can't keep still and has no idea he is doing it. This is a special video. It generates calming experiences for so many who are suffering through dementia. Makes my heart feel good. Got to start saving little bits and pieces. Thank you for sharing this with us
I had never heard of a fidget quilt! What a wonderful idea! I really like your zipper pouches, those are really nice! Thank you for sharing this, I may have to make a few of these.😊😊
I was listening and I thought at my Alzheimer's patients. So we very Catholic or Christian and love to pray. Sometimes they didn't remember the words but the pleasure to hold their chaplet make them calm. But the problem they lost them everywhere. So, maybe a good idea to sew one on that quilt, the way that it stays there!! On the one you did, the buttons that you fix can be done the way to fix the chaplet or find colours for the chaplet!!
Great video Tracy. My husband has dementia and I have noticed that her flails his arms and pounds on the arms of the armchairs more and more. Can't sit still and doesn't realize he is doing it. It used to bug me but I am getting used to it. Thanks for the video. You've done a marvellous job here.
Love this and perfect timing!! I am in the pricess of creating the pickets n stuff for one for my mom (larger size for her specific), and im going to make several smaller sizes as well for the others in her dementia unit where she lives. She has arthritis really bad in her hands, so large buttons and bigger snaps are better for arthritic hands. You have given me some extra ideas to include for the men that also deal with dementia! Love the road map and nautical themes!! Thank you so much for this!!!❤
Those are really good things to keep in mind when making these....sometimes we forget that arthritis makes it much harder where fine motor skills are needed ❤️
Wonderful ideas! I made similar quilts (not nearly as creative as yours) for the toddlers in our extended family years ago. They were a big hit. Thanks for your video!
I wish I had made a couple of these for my parents, but life was too busy when you are walking with them through dementia. This inspires me to want to make some now so people in need will have them! TY
Just a suggestion, use latex free elastics, especially if donating to a health care facility. Elastic can cause a reaction in people allergic to the latex/natural rubber in it, thats how I found out I am allergic. Fold over elastic comes in many colors and can be easy to find without latex. ❤
I do love sewing. I am learning so much from your tutorials. I sure wish I had known how to do these before my parents passed. They both had dementia prior to their passing. I plan to make one and maybe more to donate. I am curious with as much sewing as you do what chair do you use? I usually have to quit before I am ready because of my back aching.
Thank you for the kind words❣️The company is called Arrow. It was really expensive $300 chair. To be honest though…. I don’t really like it. I spent so much on it that I keep using it. I will replace hopefully soon🤷🏻♀️
From what I know they are extremely helpful for patients with dementia /alzheimers. There are groups that make them in mass and donate to hospitals and nursing homes❤️
Was hoping to be the first comment since I’m still awake at 5:30 in the morning but two other people beat me to it So I’m going to have a little snack watch your video and then hopefully fall asleep. And I don’t mean that your video will put me to sleep lol. 😂😂
My mom and best friend passed away from Alzheimer’s. I have friends who have autistic children. Is there anything I should not use on this quilt. I have a group of friends who have agreed to help make this to give to memory care homes and nursing homes. Let me know what you think. Love your channel.
So sweet that you would like to make these for others. There are groups out there that make these all the time for donations.....I don't personally know of any though. But I do think there are restrictions on what to put on their fidget quilts. (here in my comments some have said they don't put buttons on...) Check on google..I bet you will definitely find a group to tie into that will have info for ya....Happy Sewing❣️

♥️ Great idea, lovely xx
So amazing!
❤❤❤
I do love sewing. I am learning so much from your tutorials. I sure wish I had known how to do these before my parents passed. They both had dementia prior to their passing. I plan to make one and maybe more to donate. I am curious with as much sewing as you do what chair do you use? I usually have to quit before I am ready because of my back aching.
Thank you for the kind words❣️The company is called Arrow. It was really expensive $300 chair. To be honest though…. I don’t really like it. I spent so much on it that I keep using it. I will replace hopefully soon🤷🏻♀️
I have never heard of a Fidget Quilt before this video. I wonder if this could really help? Thank you for this video.
From what I know they are extremely helpful for patients with dementia /alzheimers. There are groups that make them in mass and donate to hospitals and nursing homes❤️
Was hoping to be the first comment since I’m still awake at 5:30 in the morning but two other people beat me to it
So I’m going to have a little snack watch your video and then hopefully fall asleep.
And I don’t mean that your video will put me to sleep lol.
😂😂
Sangat menginspirasi
Terima kasih sudah menonton❣️
Thanks!
Thank you for the super chat Karole❤️ I appreciate it so much❣️
I must ask where did you buy your Bible verse labels, love Them?♥️ All your ideas are great 🩷🌸🌹Thanks a bunch!
I bought them at walmart in their fabric section❤️
Have you ever made one with a heavier insert so it becomes a weighted lap blanket?
Where did you get the fabric with the bible verses?
I found mine on clearance at Walmart...but if you can't find it there...I put a link to some I found on Amazon in my description box✅
@@TheSewingChannel Thank You. At my local Walmart they only sell FQS
What do you use for the crinkle sound ?
The inside of a cracker box. Cereal box bag....✅
