Pretty much a forgone conclusion about how deep they are...up to their earlobes. Exactly. I’m fine with diversity when it makes sense and is written well and especially if it fits the setting and time periods. Yasuke should’ve just been a side character while we could’ve had a Japanese Samurai main character and then can have straight, gay, or bisexual relationships because some historical Samurai in feudal Japan did like other guys or even both genders because sexuality was viewed differently in Japan at the time. Heck they even had a 3rd gender called Wakashū in the Edo-Period. Some famous examples of Samurai that are said to have most likely been bisexual from evidence like love letters are Date Masamune and Takeda Shingen. I agree though that Yasuke made absolutely no sense and it is just a genuine shame and missed opportunity that they didn’t portray actual historical examples of diversity.
I remember one of the ex-employees revealed the original story of AC:Shadows including artwork early this year. Im not surprised they had a game model up and running.

An even smarter policy going forward -- IIRC the same Endymion video referenced here also discussed that some in the industry are taking note that this pandering and pushing The Message is hurting their bottom lines and so are going to start removing it from their marketing material and pushing it later in their games when it's too late for refunds.
So the near future sounds like it's going to be a minefield of bait-and-switch games, probably for a few years at least.

1. Aims to sell Yasuke to the Japanese
2. Makes a flustercuck of a game, messing up Chinese and Japanese cultures
3. Targets a release window that competes against Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Tales of Graces, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Monster Hunter Wilds, Atelier Yumia, and Suikoden 1&2 HD Remaster

What they somehow STILL don't know is that THE MODERN AUDIENCE IS EXTREMELY SMALL.

You are sadly misisng a key thing here. Removing Yasuke would be a titanic task to do in few months…for the developers.
Captain crunch will come to save the executives, sending a dozen employees to the hospital, but that is a sacrifice they are ready to do in the name of their lack of morality, sense of money and complete and utter incompetence.
Honestly they should just scrap it. There is no way Shadows is gonna be good. DEI aside I have not seen a single trailer of the game that looked good. The level of rework they have to do is so fundamental that it will likely come out as a patched mess that everyone will compare to GoT.
This whole delay is not to give us any decent product, is to keep investors around because once this flop they WILL have to close up.

so sad, i can remember when ubi was actually a good company when they brought us AC1, it was so amazing and they delivered then so many good AC games, AC2 ezios games were among the best, then naval fights in black flagg, honestly i hated naval games but it was so amazingly done in black flagg, i loved it.. but sadly they went down and down... their greedy ingame shops was the first step, they really put them in SP games, like Origins and they made the game impossible to beat except you do tedious secondary missions or buy XP via cash shop... but i looked over that, now all this woke nonsense... nah, i cant overlook that... so bye bye ubi, go woke go broke!!!!!!!!
Origins was fine, 100% completed that without any xp boost or spending money other than for the game itself.

I remember some older discussion about the AC:Red material but I was also soundly told I was a bigot for associating any concept material of AC:Red with AC:Shadows and that they were entirely unique and unrelated projects... that just happened to both involve fuedal japan as a setting for an assassin's creed game.

I personally think that the reason for the delay is to get rid of Yasuke and replace him with a fully Japanese character. And will be delayed until Q4 2025

You know what this reminds me of? The Pirates of the Caribbean pc game tie in. It was originally being developed as Sea Dogs II (Sea Dogs I was a good game) by the developer Akela. Those of us Sea Dog gamers were really excited when Sea Dogs II was announced. Well into the development of Sea Dogs 2, it was announced at the last minute a deal was made to retool the game and make it a Pirates of the Caribbean movie tie in game. It was so last minute and rushed, the devs didn't have time to remove anything from the Sea Dogs II content. That fact was later discovered and mods were made that brought the game back to its original content and intent. Rejoice! So yeah Yasuke can be converted back to the original character easily. As you can tell, I've been at this a long time. A long long time. Too long. 😄

Removing Yasuke would cost a lot more. Changing skin, voice, story. I think it will be better for ubisoft to just get it out and move on. And learn to not do that again.
They have all the assets for the original character. The only cost would be time to put those assets back in. Unless those assets are still in the game and can just be reactivated.

At this point it doesn't matter if they swap out yusuke protagonist. I wouldn't be surprised if AC Shadows gets cancelled and doesn't get released at all. Based on trailers and gameplay the dislike ratio is very high. So doesn't matter which was the dice rolls either way Ubisoft is Fucked

The best they could realistically do at this point is add in a third playable character thats an actual japanese samurai but thwyd have to completely change cutscenes and the script so its more likely a dlc for some sort of side quest with a samurai taking place instead. They probably wont even do that though. Game is going to be a write off at this point.

The last AC game I bought was Black Flag. Even back then, games had wokeness in it. You had your token black first mate. You had the woman pirate pretending to be a man. All things considered, it wasn't that bad. It's just that if you pay attention, the warning signs were there a long time ago. The industry has been going woke for a very long time, especially Canadian companies.
In defense of Ubisoft, a black crew member, and pirate women pretenting to be men, aren't far of from reality

I really hope they do remove Yasuke as the male protagonist and use an actual Japanese male character for the protagonist, hopefully someone fictional and without making him gay as well. if they do that, I'll buy their game just to support them for fixing things.

The mistake definitely wasn't including Yasuke in the game at least, it was making him the main focus since he is neither a samurai nor an assassin to which follows a creed. He was later added in as an afterthought over someone who could have been a native in the game and an actual samurai/assassin combo. Yasuke is just a big dude that breaks things and honestly would have been a great thing to either have him as a supporting character, someone you run into regularly on missions as an ally, or as an unlockable character you can access later on to add in rush down sections for distractions. Basically, there are cool things they could have used him for and just didn't
Ubisoft has actually got me with the idea that people wont refund the game once they got it. They did this to me with Jedi Survivor. I waited 6 months after the game came out on pc to finally play it as the audio finally got fixed.
Hattori Hanzo would have been a likely choice (and a better one, to be honest) - he was a _suppa,_ a "servant in the dark" to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Bubbisoft is learning a hard lesson, and it would have been easier if they had been a better student.

FFS, why didn't they just do the Obviously better move if that was the plan all along? I mean I understand being directed by a higher-up against your will, but if you Truly believe making, say, the main player character against common sense and instead going elbow deep into DEI, it's a lot easier to resist a blatantly stupid move by the brass if there is a collective voice of reason saying in unison that this is not only a terrible idea, it will sink the studio...
The Developers on the front line (or behind the mouse if you will) are ultimately in control of the direction the game will go. Something doesn't add up here. At any rate, it's not impossible to change the player character's mesh model and do a skin in a few months, provided the voice work can be salvaged.
Add: I've probably mentioned either here or elsewhere, but chasing temporary trends in game development is the worst possible thing you can do. What's 'popular' or 'news making' now changes by the day, meanwhile game development as we all know, takes multiple years to kick out a big project. Four or more years after whatever was happening at the time doesn't translate to release date. That's why games have either done things in fiction or channel futuristic concepts to worldbuild.

I heard they did a survey at the company asking who thought the rap music was a good or bad idea. It was unanimously bad. So how did it even end up in the game if literally everyone said it was a bad idea
The backlash would probably be big, but they might endear themselves to fans, especially in Japan, if they do change the main character it can be a; "we heard you guys, we messed up and changed the game", then release Yasuke as a dlc character.
Thank you for highlighting the OTHER consultant that Ubi hired. So many people focus on Lockley and don't even know that Ubi's consultant on society in feudal Japan specializes in wakashudo relationships. Ubi was literally trying every angle they could to crowbar this stuff into the narrative and it shows in the quality of their consultants.
