Dude ! I'm getting so many good ideas from your videos ! I really appreciate you taking the time to share these with the world. My husband is super handy and over engineers EVERYTHING lol but he takes my dreams and makes them real so thanks for giving him a great starting point
I’m glad you’re finding them useful! My wife isn’t an engineer, but she’s definitely the brains of this relationship! She is like.. 70% done with redoing our kitchen cabinets and they are BEAUTIFUL! A lot of my good ideas start with her 😂
Thanks man, this is the idea for a door I had in my head for my diy coop I’m making with a run attached to the coop, to replace our other ones that are sadly getting old and rotting away and rats are getting in. You explained it perfectly and the pivot point makes it open perfectly now! I just used a really big fence staple instead of the eyelet and also used your idea of a screw to stop the door from falling out the top of your frame. Kudos to you brother such a simple but great idea.
This is great! Exactly what I need to fix my coop. Thank you! How would you make it predator proof tho? Couldn't a crafty raccoon figure out how to lift it form the bottom?
I wonder if you could slide something at the top between the stopper screws and the top of the door? Or add a little lock to the door itself. For this set up you’d probably have to go in the run for that. If your door was further to the side you might be able to reach it?
You did such a good job on the coop and all the extras. I would paint all the outside wood with exterior polyurethane or paint, 2-3 coats. The wood, especially plywood will last years longer. That’s just me. You have done an amazing job, considering you are “not a carpenter. Thanks for sharing.
Bro nice. We have a old storage building like that and I was just telling my family I wanted to make it into a chicken coop. You gave me some ideas. Thank you 😊
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead that sounds like my husband as hes scratching his head, saying what?... huhhh?... I just dont understand what your talking about he would say 😄
I had the same idea, but I have solar power, aquaponics and lots of buckets sitting around. I will use watering bucket system to lower and raise the door as it provides inside and outside water for the birds. Cheers
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead hey! It’s your design and my 40 plus years of carpentry and 10 years of aquaponics. The world works best when we cooperate. Cheers
Hey Buddy Its a well made explonation for peoples who never build stuff 👌🏻 Im not suure what kind of wood you use.. dont take wood that sucks up moisture becouse with your nice fitting tolerances then it may stucks :) And maybe u wona build on a safety on the door for over night ;) i can sleep better then 😅😜 Good work 👍🏻
Yeah I have definitely thought about adding a lock to it! If I would have bought the wood I would have definitely used wood that could handle water, this was just what I had laying around! So far it hasn’t been an issue but it could be in the future! Buuuut by then I plan to have an automatic door haha! I have also seen people build similar doors like this but they build them on the inside of the coop to keep them dry! Thank you for watching! Excited about all the awesome peppers you’re growing!
Looks good. A little rough around the edges but whatever works. I just out one in today based upon your video. I already had boards as trim so I just needed to make the outside set. I also had some lower trim so I did not need a stop. I made my side boards twice as long as the door so I did not feel the need to make a top stop. I did not paint mine either. Paint has become quite pricey. I have plenty of lumber laying around. It is free scrap that the previous owner let me have. I will just cut another door from some scrap when it gets weathered.
So far no issues at all, but I can definitely see the need for some kind of lock! Maybe we have just been lucky so far, I know we have some raccoons in the area.
Hey thank! I didn’t have the tool I needed so I used what I had haha. I will tell you both! I WANTED to use a saws all. Those are awesome for cutting holes like these ones! What I HAD was a grinder. It was a 4” disc grinder and it ended up doing the job relatively well for me! But sticking with something like a saws all is the way to go if you have one!
One thing i have a question about regarding this is if the foxes or other can figure out how to lift such a door, i have been thinking about how heavy it should be and if there should some kinda over centre levers that lock the door in place.
Thank you for this! Do you leave your food and water out all night so it's ready for them in the morning? Or do you pick it up each night so local critters don't eat it?
So awesome! I am wanting to make these doors also for dogs because purchasing them is SUPER EXPENSIVE. Thanks for making it so simple and easy to understand. Love it!
I love your brain. I have a question. I'm doing the same thing you are with the chicken shed just on a smaller scal. maybe I'll make a video when it's done! but the shed I'm using is metal. but also pet grade* so when I'm screwing in the chicken door am I gonna need a 2x4 or somthing on the inside for the screws to go Into. I'd also to see if you'd done anything for dog houses or chicken run I am really enjoying your videos in my diy back yard this year. do you have a Facebook?
If the metal is flimsy at all I would definitely put something for the screws to go into, that will help a lot! Dog houses we haven’t done anything and our chicken run was before we really started doing chicken videos so I didn’t film that 😔. We have a video where the city made us tear it down and rebuilt it but all that was was us cutting our run up and putting the fence back up so it doesn’t get into too much detail about how it was built, I’m sorry! We do! We aren’t super active on it but we do have one! I appreciate you watching them!
So I figured I would skip a step and go straight for the automatic door you mentioned wanting. It sucks. Works great to open automatically in the morning but never shuts at night without me going out there and manually closing it. Dirt gets stuck in the bottom of the track from the chickens walking over it all day and then the door doesn’t shut. Going to pick up some wood and make your simple manual door.
I love this idea! Maybe someone already answered this or maybe someone has an idea, what would be a solution to keep predators from lifting that door up with their claws and getting in? I had a fisher cat slide in an inch wide opening and killed my flock of 14. ☹️
I screwed up and bought an auto chicken coop on Amazon. It didn’t work. So I asked for a replacement and it worked. But only for 4 months. Now I’m gonna make my own door and just not try to depend on outrageous technologies
They actually make some pretty awesome automatic doors on Amazon! Eventually we plan to upgrade to one of those 😂. Just search “automatic chicken door”!
Love this! I was not a fan of the automatic doors as most of them didn’t have a safety stop in case the chicken was 1/2 in & 1/2 out. This was perfect and we just finished it now. Thanks for this video!
That’s fair! I think at the time I didn’t specify how big because I was unsure if it was the “right” size, but in hindsight it probably would have helped a lot of people if I did!
This is the best "super easy" to understand chicken coop door build on RUclips! Thank you so much! Just what I was looking for....
You are very welcome, thank YOU for watching!
Agreed. Was looking for something simple and this is it. Easily automated for us handymen also

A little rough around the edges? What edges?
Great explanation!
I worry that raccoons will lift up the door
Have u had any problems with it staying secure from smart and pesky critters?
So far no issues at all, but I can definitely see the need for some kind of lock! Maybe we have just been lucky so far, I know we have some raccoons in the area.
You could do the same on the bottom as sides so they can't lift it up
