My dad graduated from ND in the mid 1950s and we we grew up ND fans. I remember Joe's senior year at ND and the Cotton Bowl comeback. I also saw him play at ND vs S. Carolina where he hit Ken McAfee (TE) for a game winner. As a Packer fan, I never cheered for SF, but always loved the guy and am glad for his success in the 80s and early 90s. He and Rice were nothing short of genuine awesomnosity (*new word alert*). Good on ya Joe and thanks for the memories for football fans everywhere.

Rick Dynes I read that Sam Wyche said that when he was coaching qbs with SF that they got to the point that they just made up stuff to tell Joe because he was so good. Joe would complete a pass in practice and they would say "Joe, if you would hit him on the left number he could get 5 more yards." And the next pass would hit the receiver on the left number according to Wyche.
Montana played kinda a point guard style Quarterback. He wasn't known for having a rocket arm. That soft ball that he threw looked natural to me. Montana could put some zip on the ball when he threaded the needle though. Because Montana won two Cottonbowls and a National Championship in College I never credited anyone else in the NFL for his skill set. He was just a natural.

How fast did they run in the combine?, how much could they bench, how agile were they, when you look at the metrics you see that the guys now on average are what the best guys were back in Montana's day and they now can watch fully dissected video on all the offences, yeah ok so a lot of the guys were as big but not as fast, and yes they don't want the QB's to get hurt, but they still get hit just because there's a rule saying ruffing the passer doesn't mean Brady doesn't get hit and then the penalty is given. If you want to go back before Montana then yeah ok i'll give you that when guys like night train could legally grab your helmet and try to break your neck. the offence could also hold defenders.

the rules are the way they are today because dont want star qbs and wrs getting hurt now. they lose too much money and ratings, plus the young fan wants to see high scores for there fantasy football and red zone channels. back than players did get hurt and it was considered fine. its a soft game now. kind of like 7 on 7 passing drills in practice. the qb might as well where a red jersey
How fast did they run in the combine?, how much could they bench, how agile were they, when you look at the metrics you see that the guys now on average are what the best guys were back in Montana's day and they now can watch fully dissected video on all the offences, yeah ok so a lot of the guys were as big but not as fast, and yes they don't want the QB's to get hurt, but they still get hit just because there's a rule saying ruffing the passer doesn't mean Brady doesn't get hit and then the penalty is given.
