Let's get real here, the basic pop formula which that prince and many others were known for, hasn't changed much since the 80s aside from looks...similarly how rock and metal has pretty much remained in the same state for the past 20-30 years. In pop music it's always gonna be a popularity contest I mean dude...lol...it's kinda in the name. If you ask me; mainstream music is still stuck in the 80s and 90s.

Also I'm Musician with a musical ear; not just a music fan. I know what they're doing and the only main difference to my musical ear is the more "modern" sounding equipment they use to produce and more "modern" sounding instruments. Otherwise the songwriting formula hasn't really changed.

Lots of interesting things about this song.
The movie director told Prince they needed a song for a montage segment of the movie. So, Prince threw this together at the last minute.
Notice there's no bass in the song? He wrote the song, but couldn't create a baseline. He wanted to leave it out, but how can you have a song without bass. The actress, Apollonia? She visited Prince one night. He was upset and she asked why. He said he wanted to do something, but couldn't. (Make a song without bass) She said to him, "Why can't you?" Implying that he's Prince, he can do whatever he wants. So, he didn't put bass in.

Prince's sexuality was sacred, even tho i would call him "free" not "extra" His sexuality was his expression of spirituality, even tho sometimes that went misunderstood. Sometimes being his fault. His guitar intro for this song is still unmatched to this day! so shreddirific! This song was based off his movie but a bit off his life as well, he ran away from home as a child several times sadly & dealt with a very abusive household, even tho you would hear him downplay it from time to time. I hope they switch it up & react to Get Off, they might freak out over that lol

1984 was one of the best years of my life. The music was great. People felt good about themselves. And I was a in my mid-2o's working with my friends, living life, drinking and generally having a good time. MTV was feeding us our new favorite music and videos by the hour which was a clash of the old and new acts of the day. I mean imagine that anytime day or night you could see Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, George Michael, ZZ Top, the Police, the Pretenders, Huey Lewis and the News, Cyndi Lauper, the GO-GO's, the Bangles, Pat Benatar, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, the Scorpions, Robert Plant, Def Leppard, the Fixx, Genesis, Tina Turner, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart, Journey, Foreigner, Romeo Void, the Stray Cats, Billy Joel, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, Eagles Glenn Frey and Don Henley, and more, more, more.
And we didn't even have to leave home !!!
And then movies like Footloose, Purple Rain, Against All Odds, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Splash, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Red Dawn, Terminator, Starman, Rocky III was still in some theaters, and Miami Vice debuted on television. This fantastic wave of energy and pop culture would carry us to the around 1987, when the album, Appetite for Destruction changed the direction of music. But for me, 1984 was really special. I love and miss those days of my youth. Those were the days my friend. Those were the days!!

I just LOVE YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND STUFF!
You are like me - it’s impossible to fake liking stuff, because when you REALLY GET IT, you cannot help but smile and, well your whole demeaner shows it when you APPRECIATE THE SONG AND THE ARTIST.
It’s not like you have to dig it as much as their fans do, but I can always see the point in the song where that “light bulb” goes on in your head, and you get it totally in that moment, giving the artist vindication and respect.
I really appreciate that. And, coming from a young 24-year old guy, well…..Man, you are an advanced individual!

According to recording engineer David Rivkin (AKA: David Z.) who was one of Prince's life long friends and older brother to Revolution drummer Bobby Z. Prince had this song as a complete production, complete with an orchestra, but he wasn't happy with the result.
So Rivkin asked him directly, "Well, what would you WANT it to sound like?" At which Prince removed ALL the instruments until only the drums and the sparsest of all Synths remained. As it showcased the bleakness of a relationship gone sour so perfectly. And Rivkin, recognizing greatness when he heard it went "Well, what's keeping you from releasing it the way YOU want it?"
And as a message for modern day producers: the drums here came from a LM-1 Drum Computer, there's NO real drums on this, but Prince was a star at making them sound so alive.

You have missed out the whole thing. This is a short version of the video. The full version has 6 minutes in length and it has very attractive electric guitar performance by prince followed by insane sounds by Prince for straight 3 minutes. CHECK OUT THE AUDIO VERSION of the original full length song.

Great reaction. The movie Purple Rain was semi-autobiographical. Not sure whether his real life parents experienced domestic violence issues, but they were definitely not a mixed race couple as portrayed in the film.
