Guys you have to understand to be number one on the billboard back then was much different than today. Today it's a popularity contest. Back then your music had to be great to earn number one. It was up against so many incredible songs back then.
Let's get real here, the basic pop formula which that prince and many others were known for, hasn't changed much since the 80s aside from looks...similarly how rock and metal has pretty much remained in the same state for the past 20-30 years. In pop music it's always gonna be a popularity contest I mean dude...lol...it's kinda in the name. If you ask me; mainstream music is still stuck in the 80s and 90s.
@@robertlawler1387 I know you are probably an 80s or 90s kid yourself; and we all know how much yall obsess over yourselves so your opinion is pretty biased and comes off as narcissistic lol. Also I'm Musician with a musical ear; not just a music fan. I know what they're doing and the only main difference to my musical ear is the more "modern" sounding equipment they use to produce and more "modern" sounding instruments. Otherwise the songwriting formula hasn't really changed.
Lots of interesting things about this song. The movie director told Prince they needed a song for a montage segment of the movie. So, Prince threw this together at the last minute. Notice there's no bass in the song? He wrote the song, but couldn't create a baseline. He wanted to leave it out, but how can you have a song without bass. The actress, Apollonia? She visited Prince one night. He was upset and she asked why. He said he wanted to do something, but couldn't. (Make a song without bass) She said to him, "Why can't you?" Implying that he's Prince, he can do whatever he wants. So, he didn't put bass in.
He won an Oscar for this soundtrack in 1984, made quite an impression during that years award ceremony as well. Its a really good movie if you get a chance to watch it, loosely based on his own life starting out in a famous music club in Minneapolis
I "hate" this short version. Not literally "hate", but just compared to the album version. I remember when they would play When Doves Cry on the radio, and me and my friends would get mad if it turned out to be the short version. lol
Prince's sexuality was sacred, even tho i would call him "free" not "extra" His sexuality was his expression of spirituality, even tho sometimes that went misunderstood. Sometimes being his fault. His guitar intro for this song is still unmatched to this day! so shreddirific! This song was based off his movie but a bit off his life as well, he ran away from home as a child several times sadly & dealt with a very abusive household, even tho you would hear him downplay it from time to time. I hope they switch it up & react to Get Off, they might freak out over that lol

The song, Let’s go Crazy was my fave. Love this song too. Prince always serious and cool. I remember him accepting an American music award with his group. The way he walked to the stage with them was awesome.

1984 was one of the best years of my life. The music was great. People felt good about themselves. And I was a in my mid-2o's working with my friends, living life, drinking and generally having a good time. MTV was feeding us our new favorite music and videos by the hour which was a clash of the old and new acts of the day. And then movies like Footloose, Purple Rain, Against All Odds, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Splash, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Red Dawn, Terminator, Starman, Rocky III was still in some theaters, and Miami Vice debuted on television. This fantastic wave of energy and pop culture would carry us to the around 1987, when the album, Appetite for Destruction changed the direction of music. But for me, 1984 was really special. I love and miss those days of my youth. Those were the days my friend. Those were the days!!

CHECK OUT THE AUDIO VERSION of the original full length song.
