  • I have been using the Makita 18v system for 10 years! I thought I'd share my thoughts on their 18 volt range and how it compares to some of the other options such as Dewalt and Milwaukee.

    As an electrician, I started using Makita 30 years ago for only one reason, they worked. Back then battery drivers were not what they are now and Makita was the only game in town worth playing. I still use them professionally today because they are so dependable and they are lighter than their competitors.

    My system is Makita also . My 110v tools were all DeWalt which I have never had any issues with , but my cordless kit is all Makita and the oldest combo drill/driver is 10yrs old and still works along with the original 2 3ah batteries I got with it . I've been in the trade as a carpenter/joiner for 30 years .

    Although lots of guys started out with that old Makita 9.6v from the TV ad, I actually got one of the first battery drills [we started using them for screws right away] that Milwaukee came out with just before Makita got into the US consumer power tool market. Yes, I've been building that long... When I was your age... I started building scenery with double headed nails, 3 or 4 years before power screwing came along. At university, cordless was just starting out. Stagehands used to tape a mini mag light to the side of their drills for backstage maneuvers in the dark.

    For me I was with Makita but then I changed over to Milwaukee. It was Milwaukee's 18V Vacuum that turned me back in 2014. Since then I swapped over and sold off my Makita range. For me I find Milwaukee innovative and their range is massive. They have so many more tools that others don't have. However when I did have Makita....it was awesome gear.

      same. been on makita for awhile now. i'd buy milwaukee if their stuff wasn't 2-3x more expensive. and it's not like the difference and reliability is 2-3x better, it's like incrementally better. what i like about milwaukee is their packout stuff, though that stuff is way overpriced too. well-made, but hyper expensive. it just makes more sense to go with makita because you get pretty much the same performance and you get to buy more batteries and tools, which in the end, improves the quality and speed of the work you do, which is main point of having good tools in the first place.

    Enjoyed this vid! I have been Black and Decker for years as my Dad used that in the 80s (even when I was in NZ in 2000 I bought a beige/greenish old Black and Decker jigsaw for 9NZD at cashies to fit out my travel van). I also have a couple of corded Hitachi angle grinders. But it was time to really choose a battery platform and I have gone Makita too - ordered the same charger you have in the vid with 4 X 5.0 ah batteries - there are lots of cheaper fake batteries on Amazon etc... but I invested in real MAkita. A bit of an initial outlay but should now be good to go for a decent amount of time.

    See. We brothers from different mothers. This is exactly why I use makita. Hate the colour tho. I wanted red Milwaukee or green hitachi. But it was the only pair of drills that they had in stock so I bought them out of necessity. Still, apart from the colour, makita are KANGSz. The circular saw 18v is the best purchase I ever purchased. Paid for itself a thousand times over. Infact I fully intend to get a picture of it tattooed on the back of my arm.

    I'm glad I couldn't afford my own battery tool collection when I first started because I would have gone making too. They were way ahead of the game drill and impact wise and battery wise.
    I chose dewalt right as they started their 20v line. They finally caught up to makita, and with their 60v line now I just love the options I have. We use cordless skill saws, table saw, grinders, oscillating tools, blowers, planers and of course drills and impacts (I'm probably forgetting something too...) We also have some of the 18v line we can use with the battery converters. I want the 60v mitre saw because it can also be corded, a feature I wish the table saw had. I've been led to understand there is a technical reason that's harder, but I've since forgot why.
    Either way not knocking makita but imho the dewalt lineup is vaster and has really held up on site for us. As always the batteries lock you in once you really start getting invested, being able to have a good battery stable is awesome but limiting brand wise.
    When it comes to corded tools I believe in variety, Milwaukee sawzall, dewalt or makita skill saw, hilti hammer drill... etc.
    If you work professionally just don't cheap out, makita, dewalt, Milwaukee all make good tools but some other brands aren't going to hold up on a jobsite.

    The interesting thing about cordless tools is that you are not buying the tools as much as investing in a battery system. I'm a DIY weekend warrior, so my expectations are a bit different to a tradie, but my Makita tools are really dependable, regardless of how many stupid things I make them do. My oldest tools were built for the 3Ah system, and Makita had a bit of a blip when introducing larger capacity batteries - a couple of my tools won't accept batteries larger than 3Ah. No matter, I'll just make sure that I have one or two 3Ah in the battery pocket - the dual charger is smart enough to have batteries of different capacities on charge at the same time. As time has passed and I've picked up new tools (all skins), I haven't had to buy new and expensive batteries. Unlike some other brands, Makita have gone for a double battery range of tools when more power is required - again, same battery as before, just 2 of them. They make it very hard to justify a change.

      That's surprising. I've got both corded and cordless Makitas and they're both great. I don't care for the slow safety start on the cordless but it's a keeper.

    Honestly Scott....I feel a bit guilty looking at your videos. I finished my only house reno/conversion last year and nothing of that scale is planned in future ..... but I got the DIY bug!! Symptoms: looking at surplus timber lying on the ground outside a house while walking to work, lingering in the power tool section of the local Placies......

    What I like most about Makita, apart from the obvious, durability, run time, charge time... etc etc...
    It’s the ergonomics that I like, they feel good in the hand, better than dewalt and Milwaukee in my opinion.
    Plus I’ve been using them my whole carrier and if all my tools hadn’t got stolen a year ago.... some of them were over 10 years old and still going strong.
    I do like the dewalt flexvolt range. And hitachi or hikoku are starting to draw my attention now as well.
    But for my basics, impact driver, combi drill etc etc I will probably always use Makita.

      I moved to Austria and most of my (corded) stuff is Bosch, what's the battery stuff like? I was considering Ryobi one+ stuff but want to fact find about other brands first.

    • @yrification
      @yrification 6 лет назад

      Simon Daniels yeah it’s good stuff for me. I’m still expanding tools at the minute. I’ve got 18v and 10/12v sets like the small multi tool and drill and impact.
      Not long had the 18v 57g circular saw which seems to do a good job.
      Haven’t had a great deal of experience with other brands to be honest. Thing for me is that other brands do more varied tools, Bosch need to catch up a bit really with the breadth of what they offer...but from what Bosch tools I have used they do what I need and are really good build quality.
      Unless you went to a trade show you’ll never get to actually hold the tool and get a feel for what you find best. I just took the jump in the end no turning back now lol

    I am working about 15 years as a builder and 70% of my tools is Makita. I like Makita because I get profesional tools, for the best price-quality ratio. But should understand Makita is making wery cheap tools for "home users" too. So, if you buy makita, you should choose what you need.

    • @codyolmstead4907
      @codyolmstead4907 4 года назад

      All of the major brands do this.
      It's a cheap trick to trick homeowners and new apprentices into buying what they dont need.
      Advice to anyone new:
      If you are working on your garden or shed go to your local big brand tool shop.
      If you want your tools tools to last in heavy, daily use go to a higher end tool shop that doesn't sell paint and light fixtures as well.

    Ive had makita gear for 10 years. Ive had about 4 3ah batteries die. Had one old radio stuff up, 1 drill, one impact driver stuff up. One brushless impact driver and brushless 18v rotary hammer drill ecu shit itself. 2 brushless drill chucks both dont tighten properly. One brushless grinder switch play up as well.
    Besides that, makita is great!

    Makita brushless drill 18V that on shelf of jd.com is just no more than a toy. We bought 2 sets from jd.com and both proven Makita shitty quality: one came with loosing screws and repaired marks everywhere and ... forward/reverse key was not installed, left outside of machine! Makita China replied that was their quality level! Another one looks brand new and worked for 3-4 hours then chuck had no torque supply. Returned it to Markita China (on jd.com) but just no response no service no reply. All appeared like a crap. If Makita needs evidence, contact me.
