  • In a surprise conclusion to our epic summer trip, we visited La Ronde on a layover back from Paris. This is a park Taylor had absolutely zero plans to go back to, but since Sarah had never been, we decided to make the stop! We also happened to go on one of the busiest nights of the year when the park put on an epic fireworks display to end out the evening!

    The Fireworks at La Ronde are actually an international competition. It’s 10 countries every year that compete for the title. I have been very lucky to see them a few times ( La Ronde is my home park) and they’re always some of the best shows I’ve seen; due to the pandemic less countries have been competing but they were still wonderful shows to watch.

  • @TitanLRV
    @TitanLRV Год назад +13

    It's nice to see you back at La Ronde! I was working on that day but sadly I didn't run into you! Here's some fun facts that'll give some insight into some of the questions you had in the vlog.
    The monorail just got removed actually. I have a piece of rail that I got to keep at home lmao. And another colleague kept a wheel from one of the trains.
    La Spirale (the observation tower) is supposed to be removed as well (from what I heard) because the structure is in a terrible terrible state. But I mean that ride has been standing since 1966 and it opened in 1967 and it's in an incredibly unstable terrain because the entire terrain where the park is built is entirely artificial. And the bridge creates a lot of vibrations which put a lot of stress on every single ride in the park. Especially the ones closer to the bridge. This is the reason why Cobra and Tornade were removed since those two rides were almost under the bridge.
    Monstre used to have two trains on each side but they don't anymore. A few years ago, one stupid employee was distracted and two trains collided because of him in the station. One of the trains was pretty damaged. So the park had to change the old Morgan trains that the ride had for new PTC trains. But the problem is that these trains are too heavy and they create an immense amount of stress on the structure since it was designed to hold the forces created by the weight of the old Morgan trains which were much lighter. So La Ronde chose to run only one train on each track to extend the ride's and the train's life expectancy. And well it was supposed to get RMC'd for the park's 50th anniversary in 2017 but RMC didn't have the permit to work in Canada at the time. When they finally did, the park wasn't doing well so the project was delayed until like 2022-2023. Then covid hit and it was then delayed until like 2025-2026. Then Selim Bassoul became the new dictator of Six Flags and he basically cancelled every single project that La Ronde had for it's futur. And the sad thing is that according to the rumours, there is absolutely NOTHING planned for the futur of the park right now smh. According to some colleagues who saw the plans, they made multiple versions of the ride. On some versions it would've been a smaller one track roller coaster. And in other versions it was going to be a massive 200 ft dueling RMC with an even bigger footprint than it's current footprint. But from what I heard, La Ronde was much more likely to choose one of the less ambitions versions of the project.
    Also, yeah the indications for when they closed the lines for the fireworks are very misleading and tbh management doesn't seem to care. But basically the rides in the fireworks fallout zones have to be closed ideally before 8:50 pm and no ride is aloud to still be running after 9 pm. Because at 9:15 pm, 9:30 pm and 9:45 pm the pyrotechnics team launches colorless fireworks to test the wind direction/speed and if the electrical systems that are launching the fireworks work just fine. And the firemen need enough time to get into their positions before 9:15 so entire sections of the park have to be completely evacuated by then.
    And yes there's a massive staffing issue everywhere all throughout the Québec province currently and La Ronde is feeling the effects incredibly hard unfortunately. It almost happened daily that in the rides department we were understaffed by like 15-40 employees. And in the restaurants it was worst.
    Oh and I'm sad that you missed the absolutely best part about the fireworks. Every firework is synchronized to some music playing. Because this is a fireworks competition and it is literally the most prestigious in the world. Countries all over the world are invited to compete against each other like in the Olympics. And one of the criteria that the judges use to determine how good the show was is if the fireworks were well synchronized with the music.
    If some of you read through this long paragraph I applaud you! Lmao but I hope that you at least learned something new! Like we say here in Québec : '' Vous dormirez moins niaiseux à soir!'' / ''You will sleep less stupid tonight!''

    • @plazasta
      @plazasta Год назад +1

      YOU GOT TO KEEP SOME PIECES OF THE MINIRAIL WHAT, I AM SO JEALOUS
      also for Le Monstre: what they told me instead was that they don't run 2 trains per side cause the trains are too heavy and the structure is too worn out (seriously, the whole coaster needs to be completely refurbished). Like as a whole, the issue is that the PTC trains are too heavy for the structure. The trains were reduced from 7 cars to 5, only one is allowed per side and they can't duel. It's destroyed the coaster's throughput
      Also I thought the Spirale wasn't getting removed cause the city didn't allow us? (This year theh also mentioned that removing it would've been too expensive) and yeah it's dumb. In 2018, they found out the structure was too worn to operate safely, but we can’t tear the ride down cause it's considered a historical landmark. Go figure. Apparently the city was also pretty pissed about us removing the minirail too!
      Edit: forgot to add, but the 9 PM closure isn't because of the test fireworks, it's to give the firefighters enough time to set up in those areas. In addition to the rides listed as being fully closed, there's also a couple more rides that close, but only from 9:35 PM or 9:45 to 10:30 and reopen afterwards, mainly the Demon

      @@plazasta yess I when I went to give back my uniform, I asked for a piece so the demolition crew cut one for me hahaha
      But now that I'm thinking about it, I think you are right. The accident happened with the old Morgan trains. Which is why for a few months there was a train that was half yellow and half red. But yeah I knew about the PTC trains being too heavy.
      But about the Spirale, what I heard back in 2020 or 2021, is that they absolutely needed to remove it because it would be dangerous in a few years to keep it standing since the metal is way too worn off and corroded for it to still be safe to be standing. Unless they refurbish it which of course isn't going to happen. But removing it is incredibly expensive and La Ronde isn't doing well financially. And the problem is that the foundations are immense. It looks like an upside-down '' T '' that spans from Grande Roue to Monstre. But damn I didn't know that they were pissed about Minirail. To be fair I would've liked if they at least kept some portions of the track but removed all the rust and gave it a new coat of paint to at least make it aesthetically pleasing. While using the stations to commemorate the ride in some way. I mean it was part of the Expo 67 which was the most important cultural event for Canada in the 20th century and probably even in it's history. Apparently the city doesn't want La Ronde to destroy the 103, the Jardin des étoiles and the Megadome because they are historical landmarks as well.
      For the closing time the reason we were given in zone 1 is that we had to be closed before 9pm since the ''marron d'air'' started at 9:15pm. But it would make sense that they would need about 15 min for the firemen to get into their positions before the first ''marron d'air'' are launched.

    Edit: omg this is a novel of a comment. If you're curious, yes I'm a ride op, yes I was also working at the park on that day
    Ok so something you did right at the start but didn't mention much that I think deserves more attention: if you wanna get to La Ronde, especially on a busy day (fireworks evenings and Frightfest mainly), get onto the island via public transit. If you have a car, leave it on the island of Montreal. Getting onto the island by car isn't that bad, but after park closure, getting off of it is a nightmare. On busy evenings, don't even bother with the bus. If you want, rent a BIXI (bicycle) and cycle to the metro station, or get there by foot. On fireworks evenings, it's by far the quickest and best way to get off St Helens Island.
    For Monstre: outside of what others and I have said elsewhere in the comments, a general thing is that nowadays, you will rarely see only one side open. Both sides will open, just not duel. On the rare times only one side is open, it's mainly due to staffing issues. Yeah, others have mentioned it too, but La Ronde is really understaffed. If you wanna ride Le Monstre, my recommendation is to do it first thing when the park opens, it's pretty much the only time where there are no lines. As for the experience, yeah it's a boring layout. The one good moment it has is the double-down on the right track.
    Oh and yes we all really REALLY wish it could be RMC'd. Le Monstre has not aged well at all. The structure is not in a good state anymore. I remember something Airtime Thrills said about American Eagle, and it applies to this coaster too: it cannot be left as is. Either they tear it down (the city of Montreal said no, they consider it a historical landmark), completely refurbish the whole thing or RMC it. Between a refurbishment and RMC, I'd go RMC, that way something could be done about the layout.
    Speaking of staffing issues, that's also why the Catapulte (giant swing next to the Ferris wheel) is closed. Nothing mechanically wrong with it, we just don't have enough ride ops.
    For Goliath, yeah it's great. It's short, and it's a one-trick pony, but that one trick is executed really well. Didn't feel like you enjoyed this moment of airtime? Don't worry, here's another one. Sad this moment of airtime is over? Here's another one! Wanna do it again? GOOD HERE'S ANOTHER ONE. I've ridden Diamondback, and while I don't think Goliath is better than it, I'm fairly certain Goliath is the one with the most airtime. It's nothing but airtime.
    10:10 so that's why that area stinks when I go under the path! Seriously though of all the areas I cleaned this season, that small bit of terrain under the exit and next to the queue is the one that had the most absurd objects in it. It's almost as if someone went camping there!
    About Ednor: if you wanna ride it (honestly I enjoy it), make sure you ride in the back and you're not loose in your restraint. Doesn't need to be crazy tight, but not loost. Also try being tall enough that your head clears the restraints, helps a lot lol
    For Dragon, not sure what you implied, but this year the special effects were working actually! Tip though, only try riding Dragon on a dead day where no one is in the park, otherwise the waiting line is stupid for what it offers. The station is super inefficient at loading and unloading people (in short, Dragon isn't operated like a coaster, it's operated like a flat ride, if that makes sense) and 99% of the time there's only one person operating the coaster. Again, short-staffed, it sucks.
    And yeah when they say something is closing at X time, it's misleading. On some days and at certain times, it means the line closes at that time, other times it means the line closes early and the ride itself closes FOR that time. The park makes no distinction whatsoever between these two in their communications to guests, it's stupid.
    Also yeah let's say I feel sorry for the people running the food joints and I do not envy their job. They pretty much have the worst job at the park and are the employees treated the worst. Just a reminder, please be kind to them, don't be a Karen. That being said, yeah some of the employees are super lazy. Not all of them, but some yeah. Are the slow operations down to staffing issues or slow employees? Both.
    Fun fact: Boomerang is actually one of the original 4 Boomerangs that opened in 1984! Iirc it was the third one to open ever. Runs decently as long as you avoid the front. The middle is the least rough.
    Ok seriously, warning: just cause Manitou looks like a smaller Titan doesn't mean it's easier on your stomach. A lot of people think it's the more family-friendly version, but the seats spin much faster, so it's arguably even more dizzying than Titan. Be warned.
    For the fireworks evenings: lots of rides close and the park is SUPER busy, but the shows last half an hour and you get night rides! It's definitely one of the best parts about La Ronde. I'd say more, but others have already said what I wanted to day about it being the biggest fireworks competition in the world lol

    Le Monstre was an excellent ride, perhaps the best wooden coaster of its time after Son of the Beast's coaster. Unfortunately, it aged badly. Indeed, in recent years, they have made many modifications which have made the coaster less attractive and much more unpleasant, especially after the removal of the original trains. The vibrations are not because of the coaster but indeed because of the new trains. Before, with the old train, the coaster did not vibrate and did not give back pain. It was very pleasant and we left the ride with a smile. Six Flags no longer has the choice to convert the Monster into an RMC hybrid so as not to leave the thought too long. I feel like it just sad that my favorite coaster as teenager became one of the coaster I hate the most today because of the pain. I really hope that the people who made the decision to removed the old train has been fired.

    • @plazasta
      @plazasta Год назад +1

      It's not so much removing the old trains that was the issue, those trains were getting old and needed to be replaced, the issue was replacing them with heavy PTC's simply because they were the cheapest trains on the market. Whatever money they could've saved from cheaping out on the trains was lost on all the extra maintenance they now have to deal with. Long term, it was a stupid decision.

    The indoor coaster closes because of the fireworks because the fireworks debris directly fall on the building and on the lineup. The ride has caught on fire multiple times in the past due to the fireworks which is why they have firemen stationed there every single show. And also I was part of the team that had to find the unexploded bombs all over the floor after every show. Because not every fireworks explodes. So we need to make sure the entire area is safe from unexploded bombs which can take 1-2 hours to do. And yes unexploded bombs fall directly on top of the ride and in the lineup queue

      There isn't a fire hazard anymore, they've installed sprinklers on the roof, and yeah it's not exploded bombs, but still dangerous debris gets picked up, mainly because we do not want that stuff to end up in the hands of guests.
      I mean yeah sure Dragon can probably operate during fireworks safely, but there's no point in it if you can't get to the ride safely lol

      @@plazasta Well there's the unopened cylinders that were filled with explosive powder that would often be found laying near Titan. Those were considered unexploded bombs. Or at least that's what the pyrotechnicians told us. We didn't find them all the time but I've picked up like 2 or 3 of those this summer.
      But damn, I didn't know abut the sprinklers. But I remember that once in 2019, the roof caught on fire but the firemen responded very very quickly in extinguishing it since they were right next to it lmao

But the cylinders were so rare that most of the time we only left with the little black stars in our hands hahaha
      But yeah the massive firework detonation 15 meters away from me scarred the living soul out of me. For the 2013 season, the Monstre's original Morgan trains were replaced with four new trains from PTC. A Year after the Monstre beated El Toro in the Six Flags contest and be #1 coaster in 2012, La Ronde decided to make this coaster as a horrific ride by changed the train. They removed alot of rollercoaster in our local park but I think that the remove of Morgan's train is still the worst decision they ever made.

    Yay for coming back to La Ronde! The fireworks competition is quite spectacular to witness and is usually when we have our busiest days (Frightfest being the other major event), especially when the weather is gorgeous.
    As a fellow ride op, our Boomerang is a bit rough around the edges but is worth doing if you keep your head movement in check. My favourite and suggested spot is in the back for the most thrills and intensity.
    For Dragon, I’m sad you didn’t get to ride it! The best spot is in the back. The special effects are 90s cool, fun and spooky! For about 15 years there was an awesome musical soundtrack that accompanied the ride (have been riding it since it opened in 1994), whereas for the last decade or so, it’s just sound effects. Maybe one day the music will be back, but it’s definitely a fun family coaster!
    Monstre 1 is what I consider to be the more adventurous/fun of the two tracks, especially for its bunny hops mid-course. Monstre 2 (the one ridden in this video) induces headaches and backaches/general body pain. Sorry you had to experience this.
    Vampire is a definite must next time! I’ve ridden 1 other Batman, and ours is a completely different and intense experience. I almost pass out each time at one specific spot. It’s worth it though!

    Montreal is a cool city. La Ronde seems to look an old good park. Like, you can see the monster is a big construction that represent well its time: 80s, when hollywood started with horror, thriller movies. but the problem with this park it seems like the way it grew up. Its like they forgot alot of maintenance years after years and then the good park we know looks now like a ok park.They need to upgrade the park and decoration.
    What I see also is that They dont want to upgraded coasters man.... The last unik roller coaster La Ronde got was in 2006 with the Goliath. Ednor was a garbage coaster given by Six Flags in 2008. In reality, Sox Flags gave us only 3 roller coasters in 22 years and removed 3 others roller coaster plus 3D attraction, helicopter tour.
    The Monster, was supposes to be circulated by the Morgan's train. The original train, Morgan's train, was more confortable and smoother than the actual one, the coaster never shaked like that and people could enjoyed the ride tottally. Thats why the Monster was considered like the best six's Flags coaster in 2012 by the Great championship of Six Flags battle. Then la Ronde decided to change the train model for the Monster in 2016.... The Monster as we know wasnt the Monster again, it was a nightmare. Yes, the sensation of enjoy was the opposite. The new train made the ride very umcorfortable, the coasters is shaking as we never felt, we coulddnt be free anymore to raised our hands as we were with the Morgan, because of the lack of space, the coaster given us another sensation. The maintenance engineer was forced to upgraded the speed of the lift because the weight of train is heavier than the old one so the Thrill's sensation is totally gone. The original's Monster noise is totally gone.
    I remember that there was an autistic guy who came in from the monster and said hello to everyone before going for a ride whenever he wanted. He's been there every day for years. All regular visitors knew him. This man had a mad love for the Monster. I remember the first time I saw him was in 2007.... he stopped coming to do the wreckage some time after they changed the trains.
    If La Ronde is becoming like that is because administration didnt make their job seriously or ttied to make a good investments.
    Sorry for my english
