- How to replace the timing belt and associated components on a 2004 Honda Pilot 3.5 V6, start to finish.
Honda recommends replacing belt at 105k/84 months.
Thanks for watching!
Great video from start to finish. Just wrapped up my 2004 Honda Pilot timing belt change. This video provided great guidance. I spent
Excellent Video. I am doing this procedure this week. I can't believe that the dealer and local mechanic want $900 to do this job. It is an important job and a bit labor intensive, but it really boils down to attention to detail, and ~30 nuts/bolts removed and re-torqued. Bought the timing belt kit at Advance Auto Parts for ~$150 out the door using purchase online, pickup in store with coupons. Thank You for the detailed how to video. You're the man.
JUST FOR THE ADDED INFO IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THE SPARK PLUGS IF YOU LOOSTEN THEM A LOT THE ENGINE WILL BE EASY TO TURN TO TOP DEAD CENTER WITH THE CRANK SHAFT BOLT.
This is one of the best explanations of timing belt changes that is on RUclips. Thanks
Fantastic video. Thanks so much, I'm about to change my timing belt for the second time. I'll do it myself this time and save about $800.
Just changed timing belt/pulleys/waterpump on a friends 2003, this guide was a fantastic help. Thank you!
+Mark D'Allura Glad to help, thanks for watching.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video It was a big help in replacing my timing belt on my Honda accord.
Nice Video Carl... I always dread the start up after a timing belt change. Always second guessing myself after everything is put together... Good JOB.!!!
Yeah definitely a butt clenching moment for sure... if its wrong you're doing a valve job. Thanks for watching bud!
You can take the low pressure hose off the steering pump, put you gloved thumb over the orifice right away, wedge the hose somewhere in an upright position. I usually only spill 3 or 4 drops max. At that point you can place the pump right on top of the engine. Makes a huge difference. You found the radio and Nav stickers in the glovebox? That Pilot must have been purchased at our dealer, lol!
Having said that, yours was the best video for this job that I've seen on RUclips. Nice work!
Thanks very much!
Thanks to this video, I got the courage up to tackle this job on my wife's 2004 Pilot. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Someone else commented here about removing the low-pressure hose from the power-steering pump thus allowing you to move the PS pump completely out of the way. That was an awesome tip and helped immensely. The other thing I would add is when it comes time to reassemble, install the side mount to the engine (where the top motor mount is fastened) BEFORE installing the timing belt covers and crank pulley/harmonic balancer.
Great! Just finished changing my timing belt. So helpful! Thank you so much.
Carl..this was well done and gives the user enough insight as to the tools and whether they would have the expertise to attempt this before hand. One comment is in your description, the parts that you had replaced made great sense. Any chance you could add those such as 1)tensioner 2)water pump 3) serpentine belt 4)timing belt and so on. Whichever parts you feel made sense would be of great help as there's no sense in doing just a timing belt when the others should be done at the same time. A list of tools needed would also be an advantage such as the torque wrench, 14mm open end wrench, J tool etc. - again thanks for this nice work and helpful video. Hope your family member appreciated your time and effort.
Here's what I learned by watching. The price my mechanic charges is appropriate for the amount if work. Especially for someone like me, with one injured hand. :)
Great instructional video.. I hate sideways engines...Good to see you again Carl!
Thanks buddy.
Just did mine today 2hrs and it runs great, great vidya btw you helped me out huge👍
Glad I could help
Thanks man. Think I'm gonna give this a go on my Pilot. Great video.
Funny was just thinkin bout yah today brotha, Glad to see yah back, thought maybe yah left us to go pro gor the Carson auto parts store ;).. good job on the Honda, man they sure do make these new cars all crammed up for space
Hey Kenny.. I shot this back in the beginning of April, been busy and no time for the vids.. Hope to do more soon. Take care man!
Good video very informative I like the fact that you mentioned the torque specs as you tightened things up. Allot of videos tend to leave that important bit out. Good job
Great video. Unfortunately I didn't change the belt immediately after buying the 2004 Pilot, and I paid the price for it afyer it sheared teeth off it driving down the road. Hard lesson.
excellent DIY Video ! Thanks for taking the time to make this .
+Roger Lopez Thanks for watching and the comment!
Another quality Broncocarl92 repair. good job sir.
Nice work.
Antifreeze, it's always hiding somewhere, I've given up trying to catch every drop.
Thank you for a very informative instruction video. I think I can do this job myself after viewing it. You have a great presentatin style. Thanks again.
Great job. Thank you so much for posting!
Hey man. Thanks for posting this. it was really well done. Very helpful. I really appreciate it.
Good mechanic . Good vid.... This saves people 1000-1200 bones if they can do it. Nice trick on the j bolt
Nice thing about water pump is the O-ring seal on the water pump instead of a gasket has to be scraped off.
This is a good guide, i guess the engine of this very car is V engine.
Good to see you again, Carl!
Wow-- I don't think I have ever come across a bolt that tight-- my tools would break before getting it loose-- I also have a gas pipe "fastener convincer"...
Honda starters do have a distinctive sound, don't they?
If you watch the joint on the breaker bar, it really looks like its going to fail..good tool I guess..
Agree about the starter noise.
Thanks for stopping by buddy!
You don't need the j bolt if you are replacing the tensioner. Just put the new tensioner and pulleys on. Install the new belt. Then pull the pin and it tensions the belt and you are done.
Gerald Noe yes we established that. thanks for the comment.
The battery J bolt pushes the tensioner roller up against the tensioner piston. So when you pull the pin on the tension piston, it won't slam into the tensioner roller.
Great informative video! I just did my first timing belt job on a Honda Pilot over the weekend, & with your video it helped out a great deal. The only set back I had was removing the oil dipstick tube. Did you have any trouble with removing/re-installing yours? Thanks!
Glenn Gardner No not a problem. The car did live in Florida for a long time so maybe the lack of road salt exposure is the reason. Thanks for the comments and the view.
How did you remove the oil dipstick tube ?
That was brutal. Best way I can say I got mine back on was to make an “okay” sign with my finger and thumb to hold and start to put in the bolt.. I didn’t have room to put all my fingers in that little space.
what an excellent video. A few questions I have are 1) when you remove the motor mount is that to lift the engine for easy access to parts? 2) How did you drain the radiator? is there a valve? 3) Im not sure how you tested it when you turned teh engine over and over , the lines never did line up so how did you know you were good? Thanks and hopefully you can help since I will be attempting soon.
Good to see a video from you
Thanks, that's nice to hear!
Nice work, id like to do this myself but honestly i don't have the tools.. guess im up a creek and have to have someone do it for me instead.
This guy is Batman
Another trick to get crank bolt off is socket on bolt and breaker bar wedged against frame. Quick crank of engine (do not start) will loosen it. ;)
Good video but I got confused on the last part where ur cranking the timing belt to a revolution.i noticed the white lines didn't come back to the original markings 🤔..I Wana try this but worried on that part cuz I didn't get it
Thanks Broncocarl92 excellent video thinkin' about buyin' one. Great video.
Rocky Road Garage thanks
the j bolt is used when replacing belt only. You skipped the part about removing the tensioner when replacing the waterpump, you don't have to reinstall thye j bolt because you're not keeping the tensioner at the same spot.Explain the why's when you're doing something!
so if Im replacing the tensioner do not do the j bolt trick?
Great job just next time you use a long extension like breaking crank bolt use a jack stand to give you leverage
Great video. Very detailed. If I remove the front cylinder head from my 07 accord to replace head gasket that is needed. I can just do the same timing mark line up procedure as if I was just changing the timing belt?
So…Timing belts are more difficult to deal with than serpentine belts..? Those are 2 different things right?
Hey. Did you remove the spark plugs before turning the engine? My instructions suggest I do that.
I did not. You could but I don't feel it's necessary.
Nice job you made it look easy
Hey! Great video...question, my 04 pilot has 167,000 timing was done @ 100,000 last week the vct and check engine light came on for crankshaft position sensor. My question is - is the sensor accessible from the outside or will I need to preform another timing job? All your help will awesome, I've searched and called several dealers and know one will answer this question unless I bring in for a diagnosis fee. Ugh!
hi your video was very informative, would you be please able to put a video for honda pilot charcoal canister problem fix which will be appreciated.thanks again.
Excelent video and job done. Thanks so much.
So we don't need to use the j bolt if we are replacing the tensioner ? Great vid btw I'm planning on taking on this task myself never have done a timing belt
Very good job 😊👍👏🍷
Wow, like others have said, that looks to be a big job but you da man and KO'd it!
Thanks buddy!
Carl how are you?My name is Chris. How long does it take from beginning to end for t-belt and plugs to replace?Did u also replace thermostat? How long is that belt good for ?
Thanks for posting such a good video. I have odyssey and need to do it. The trick on these belts is to get the belt on tight going around the pulleys...One other video guy said using a box end wrench rotate a few teeth then come back to the marks to get the tension. Is that something you did too?
good video dude! but when your using that pipe on the breaker bar itreminded me of when i had to have a cast put on my elbow from one of thos breaker bar's blowing up and me smacking my elbow off the fender... duramax balancer bolt on a G-van.....
ouch... if you watch it again you will see the head of that thing flex like crazy, I'm quite surprised it didn't blow...
Thanks for watching and the comment!
ye i though it was going to let go
You done a great job.
Thanks buddy
Good video! I have a question, Sir. Bronco, I have the same model car, but I have to remove the CMP sensor which my mechanic says that I have to remove the timing belt. Watching other videos I found that is possible to remove it without removing the timing belt, however I cannot find videos removing CMP for my 2004 Honda Pilot. What is the difference between CMP and CKP sensors, I am confused between those two and where are located. Thak You so much.
medievalmusiclover honestly I have no idea what those sensors are. I'm not a Honda mechanic. I work on transmissions by trade and this is my sister-in-law's car that needed a timing belt. Since I'm a good brother-in-law and have mechanical skill I decided to make a video about doing this job. It was the first one I did and unless she has this car another 10 years probably the last LOL. Sorry I couldn't help you with the sensor question. Thanks for watching and take care.
Hi can you do the video on how to replace the rear manifold catylic converter(this part # 16465 )on camry 2006 XLE please thank.
Wish people would change the lower main seal too
I was watching your video and you said something about Jill boat I want to know if you can send me a link where I can get that please
I have never understood why the crank bolts are so tight on hondas... over 300 foot pounds.... it only needs 120 to 150 and it would be fine, but the instructed 180 sounds fine to me.
THANKS A LOT GREAT VIDEO THANKS FOR SHARING
Thanks for posting but man... if you're gonna use that pipe extension you gotta support those two socket extensions! Hah!
Great vid!! What spark plugs do you recommend?
Nice job Carl!
Thanks Rick.
NGK or Denzo spark plugs are fine for any Honda....they are the only kind I run in my Acura RL
What's the purpose of the J bolt then?
Serious question, why would the book have you use one of the battery J bolts as a "tool" what is the purpose? Does it put pressure on the the tensioner puller assembly and compress the tensioner?
They want you ro use it to keep tension on the tensioner in case you are just changing the belt and not the pulleys or water pump. Pretty stupid, if your in that deep, just change the pulleys, tensioner and water pump and coolant. Don't go that far into the job and not change the timing belt: ruclips.net/video/d7ZkNOnG_7I/видео.html
Very good job
How long did this job take? It looked like it should have taken hours and hours. Great job
Job took about 5 hours, without the filming would have taken four.
Thanks for watching!
Your first time and making sure you do it correctly, 7 Hours. Plan for a weekend. Start with removing the crankshaft pulley bolt. If you can't get that off your dead in the water.
great video
I need help I’m look for the camshaft position senior location I have a 2003 Honda Pilot
great video!
It hard to just remove timing cover? Suspect friends pilot skipped time. Want to verify next time I visit
nice video. thanks.
Neat tool and i hate anti freeze too it's the worst part of the job well almost. Also did the radio have to be re-coded? I did one and had no code for the radio i had to remove it and get the serial # off of it and call the honda PART'S guy's not the service dep. they want to charge you $100 but the part's guy's just give it to you free over the phone. Awesome job and you did it in under 30 min. LOL.
The radio and NAV codes are both pasted right inside the glovebox, so much for anti-theft LMAO!
Thanks for stopping by Scott!
***** Yea thats where i put it after i got it from honda for the next guy.
How long did the timing belt water pump tensioner job take. Also I’m loosing coolant somewhere around the area and it doesn’t run hot just looses 1quart or so a week. Belt or tensioner squeals sometimes and I smell coolant. It’s way over due for the job I’m just too broke to pay anyone and too scared to do it myself but I have the whole kit. Also how hard are the plugs to change.
It's a 4 hour job. Plugs are pretty simple to do also I have another video where I swap out the coils and plugs for a misfire detection could give you an idea what to do.
please some body tell me how much this will cost yes same car same problem asap
Hey I have a question where did you get your timing belt kit?? I’m interested in doing mine
sergio ramos rockauto.com
How long do these Honda pilots last theoretically,if maintained properly?
As long as it doesn't rust out a Honda could last forever if you take care of it.
Thank u broski😎👍🏼
Not sure why u need the tool to hold the crank pulley if u have an impact wrench
The one I did prior wouldn't come loose with just impact wrench so that is when I made tool. Considering how much effort it took to remove this one I suspect its use was necessary here as well.
great video. bout how long did it take you?
5 hours with video, would have been 4 without.. Thanks for watching!
Cool thanks for asking the question I wanted to ask. 5 hours with the "right tools" doesn't seem too bad for a DIYer.
Thanks bro.
Impact 1/2 inch rechargeable Milwaukee would do
How long did it take you and how much was the cost
Can't remember parts cost but was 4 years ago too. When making video the job takes a whole lot longer but job should take only about 4 to 4.5 hours.
Would that be the same procedure for 2010 Honda Pilot? ( timing belt replacement)
Lebron Jordan with the same engine I suppose yes. Not a Honda guy so I can't answer for sure.
Broncocarl92 thanks man...
Carl lets just say if I forgot to mark before removing the belt is it ok if i line up all tdc when reinstalling or am i in trouble.
Pre marking everything IMO is a safer way to do the job.
Ok but what if i forgot to is it ok?
Infam0us-WuNn Nguyen I don't know what your mechanical ability is so I can't answer that. I can't be responsible for other people's actions. thanks for understanding.
Does the j bolt come with the kit, also what was the purpose of the pin in the tensioner thanks
the J bolt is the battery hold down bolt, and the pin in the tentioner keeps the tentioner pulled back untill belt is installed.
Do not count on the J bolts for the battery being in very good shape. On my pilot, they are pretty much made of rust at this point.
Ok thank you
What tap for the J bolt thread? Just preparing for my project , thanks
manny Pep M6x1.0
Broncocarl92 thank you for your help ! Wish me luck
my 04 mdx acura engine lite came on took it to autozone to get it diagnosed 5 cyclinders are misfiring i did a full tune a week ago what do u think it is??
+James Quintero With that many cylinders almost sounds like a fuel starvation problem.
Bro. Thks man. I was thinking the same thing the lite seems to. Come. On. And. Off. At moments
Big job
Big, but no headache... would be happy to do another one of those.
Thanks for stopping by!
Is this the same as a 2003?
Daniel Sielaff yes
R u in Houston?
No
can you write down the torch wrench for the crank shaft please?
I'm not sure what you are trying to ask.. are you asking about the holder?
I am asking the setting foot pound for the crank shaft tightening , thank you.
at 25:15... 181 lbs-ft.
Thank you so much.
how much should this cost to get done ?
PMGaming101 Not really sure, parts plus 5-6 hours labor.
Thanks for watching.
***** I was quoted $600 to do it. Highway robbery.
Most Honda or Acura dealers will charge you between $800 and $1,600 USD to do the timing belt change. Then they will also try to sell you a valve adjustment and spark plugs.
That's actually cheap..
Agreed
man that was no fun at all lol, great job it runs sweet
Thanks Darrin.. this was actually the first timing belt job that I wouldn't mind doing again.
Lesson...this job is a pain in the...
Norm DePlume not really, if you take your time in the end it will save you a lot of money.
Broncocarl92 thanks for the encouragement!
Going to be taking this on with my Honda Pilot (2010). Same scenario or very similar I hope? Thanks so much for a great video tutorial
Drinking game every time he says umm drink!
do honda pilot 2005
that belt looked good for anther 50k
lol i got a pilot with 153k on it and honestly im not sure if its had any of this work done to it. According to honda ill most likely need to do what hes doing and a valve adjustment.
