I am a retired IT engineer. In my 30+ years of career life, I got laid off 4 times.All layoffs were due to company downsizing and company closures. It is not a big deal if you got laid off. It is a good opportunity for you to rethink your goals and direction in your life, and to take a break to do something else like traveling. Wish you good luck with your times ahead.
One door closes and another one open! Just a job. I would not care too much. I would not want to live in Canada. It becomes another California, WA, NY. There are so many crimes and homeless. It becomes socialist or even com mun ist states. I work in the states in semi tech industry. There is no point to say good bye to your coworkers. They will forget about you in a week or few weeks. BTW,. Layoff is very different from Fire in English. Fire means your own fault. Layoff/Downsize is company fault but they just blame on you!!!

I'd like to share my pesonal experiences with termination, if I may.... so I basically grew up here as a HKer since Grade 7.... I got laid off more than 3 times, all with tech companies here... most of the time I got totally caught off guard... but that's the reality!!! it's all part of business AND politics.... what you gotta focus on is whether the severance pay was fair!! Some companies could be cheap enough to just offer like 3 to 4 weeks of pay (YES, including the statutory minimum 2-week severance).... then you gotta think long & hard whether it's worth paying for legal advice.... it's not just about how long you had been with the employer but your added value you offered... all the extra time worked without pay.... in my humble opinion, it's really important to take care of your own mental health first! Take a small trip outsdie of your city... refresh and regroup your thoughts!! there will always be a better fit for your career down the road!!

@@qidongxu7339 Most IT jobs that are outsourced to overseas are usually technologies that have been around at least 5 years. In order to stay competitive, your skill set need to be updated every 5 years. Otherwise, you will be laid off eventually. With AI, many jobs will be reduced also.

Layoff is not a big deal in current time. However, do watch yourself and takes time to recover, heal and adjust your mindset. Sudden layoff does have effect on a person's confidence and having a negative impact on mental health especially in situation when we know it was due to other reasons (economic/office politics) and not our performance. Agree that supports from love ones and friends at this time is most important because many will lose positive outlooks and spiraled into depression.
Sorry about what you been through. This process is typical in Canada and US. The managers and HR persons were instructed to say and act exactly like that and nothing more. This is for the company's protection against any likely accusations or complication in the case of lawsuits. For example, the company could be demanded by employment lawyers to provide full supporting documentation about any "employee performance" or more personal specific termination causes. The lawyers would certainly scrutinize these documents and punch holes to the termination ground.

Dont be upset or mad, there is nothing about you. This is pretty normal in North America, we will get a pink slip or two during our career life. As you already mentioned, we are just a cog in the machine. Take a break, think about what you want to do in the future, there is always greener pasture out there. 第二次裁員我就好像買報紙週圍問人，有沒有工作給我做，每次裁員我都做不同的工種，做了四年印刷，做了三個月在地盤起樓，做個半年裝修，又做過三個月倒餿水，我是一個handyman 這些都是手作所以對我來說沒有問題，可能我好彩從89年移民到現在都沒有停過工作
在2010 ，9月又裁員，十月電話 interview 有公司請我來溫哥華工作2011年2月開工做到現在做返老本行，飛機維修
在加拿大從1989年到現在我已經做了5間不同的飛機維修公司，今次在溫哥華是最後的一間 五月份回多倫多退休

我分享我經驗. 我在某大銀行做咗十三年被 let go. 關於 severance pay, 我係去搵 employment lawyer 處理. 當時我都係好傍偟, 但要好小心. 因坊間好多所謂 employment lawyer, 質素上落好大. 幸好有人介紹一個真係專打 employment law 嘅律師俾我. 當第一次 meeting 時佢解釋得好清楚, 我個 case 係 "wrongful dismissal". 佢睇過晒份 termination letter 後就同我講佢最少可以同我 fight 多幾多個星期 severance pay. 我個律師嘅 practice 係唔收 upfront 律師費用, 但會收幾百蚊 retainer fee. 律師費係後期先計. 金額係 fight 到嘅 incremental part 嘅 18%, 律師費佢亦會向僱主索償. 律師亦用紙同筆解釋唔同嘅 scenario 我一共可 fight 到幾多 incremental severance pay 嘅結果. 同埋原來律師費係可以作扣稅之用, 所以佢亦列晒唔同嘅 scenario plus tax savings 我嘅得著. 跟住我乜都唔使理, 交晒俾律師處理. 最後我接受僱主俾多50% of original severance pay. 本來佢同我講以佢幾十年做 employment lawyer 經驗, 佢應該可以再幫我 fight 到更多. 但當時我算嘞, 唔想再同間公司再糾纏落去, 就接受咗. 所以記得當 HR 逼你簽 termination letter 時, 乜都唔好簽, 一定要搵一個有經驗嘅律師去處理.

我是在温哥華做左廿多年Payroll 嘅香港人。睇完你条片，我想提出资料有出入嘅幾嘅。首先，若果係被即時解僱，公司需要在48小時內將欠你的工資，包括代通知金，發放给你。至於遣散費，係绝對吾可以低過勞工發例。最後，公司係有責任發给你一張ROE,Record of Employment,用來申请失業金。至於Reference Letter, 一般都吾會比。希望以上资料對朋友們有用。

我好明白你既心情, 我以前經歷同你相約, 都係工作過5年多的公司， 然後有日返工又係下午meeting 通知, 而之前幾日都睇住同組兩個senior 級同事又係咁laid off，係公司發生既叫做臨走時見過面，仲講到兩句，WFH模式真係會好絕情吓，login account 一個制delete 左, 就咩都唔存在過咁.. 所以會好唔想再成為另一間公司既齒輪, 至少唔會擺公司為頭幾位先 (呢d野拍戲就有), 趁空檔不妨又學習新知識, 放一個假調整一下自己方向, 祝福 🌄
Sophia，好偶然睇到妳這段片，感覺到妳係好好的一位，妳幫到人認知到如何面對及處理失業的一殺那，係好正面，唔同地域都有唔同的事情去處理，妳這樣做係好好啲，唔知妳有沒有信仰，都願主耶穌祝福妳和妳一家。
雖然這次的經歷比較負面
但係都想利用當中學到的東西

在資本社會下，係唔會有人情味的。你嘅失業經驗的確係提醒好多人，所以要認真睇睇嗰份解僱信嘅賠償。大大部份嘅公司賠償都係去為自己賠到最少賠，員工如果唔去好好的了解同尋求幫助，只有默默接受那insulting 嘅賠償。
我太太有同樣的被遲退經驗， 18:01 經過搵律師意見之後個賠償額真係大咗啲，雖然唔係好大，但起碼唔係咁低。
