Caporal, was probably smoked at Waterloo and most certainly smoked even earlier when "le grandè armiè" marched on Moscow, many of the dead French troops, even those found today, all had clay pipes. My daughter brought back from France several pouches of Caporal, I loved it, sadly however, the french authorities will not allow it to be sold overseas so you cant call a shop that you know sells it, and have some posted to you.
Thank you Mark for sharing your holiday with us it's very thoughtful of you and enables us, those who haven't experienced Europe yet a taste of what to expect. Take care :)
Great info as I'm living in France and I've decided to try pipe smoking again after many years since the last try. It didn't go well as I'd just bought my farmhouse and decided to sit under my old oak tree like Gandalf and try some herbal mix I'd bought in Glastonbury. After getting high and nearly passing out I put myself to bed and didn't try again. 😁
@@bremenpipesmoker6571 Thanks for the reply. Your video on Tolkien's tobacco just popped up on my recommended videos and I've commented on that. Ill look into the tobacco you discussed there. Have a good day...
Schippers is a traditional Dutch tobacco, although it is now made by the Danish company the scandinavian tobacco group. You can find it in pretty much every tobacco shop in the Netherlands that carries pipe tobacco. It is a kind of traditional Dutch pipe tobacco that is called: Baai tabak. It translates to Bay tobacco in English. It is called like that because is was traditionally imported from the Chesapeak Bay in Maryland USA. Just some information for people who are interested.
Thx for a journey around a few french tobaccos. I'll remind myself not to forget my own tobacco!! Nice to see that you are having some nice weather. Enjoy your vacation my friend! Take care and Be well!
Gilles Cassidy Hello Gilles! Thanks a lot for your wishes! ...yes...you better bring something, you really enjoy. I`m now nearly "out of stock"...and so, I just have to stick to the Caporal...and get used to it... :-) Take care my friend!
Hi Mark: Looks like beautiful weather in France. Thanks for the review of French pipe tobaccos. I like your "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" approach to pipe smoking. I too, enjoy getting into the culture when I travel, and try stuff that the locals eat, drink, or smoke. That can be fun, or a surprise, in some cases! So, why the large Ser Jacobo? Enjoy. Ed
GrandpaCavendish Hello Ed! ...you just got me! LOL...I actually completely forgot to solve this mystery... The reason is, that these tobaccos are quite dry or/and in a finer cut, than "usual". So, if you want to smoke for the duration of an "average" pipe (medium size with "normal" tobacco), you should use a big pipe, like the maxima...otherwise, you´re done after 15 minutes.. :-) Thanks Ed, for reminding me! Take care Ed, and be well!
Cool Video! As I'm French, I recommend you to test 1637 that's non aromatic but very nice taste! Also Chacom n1 to 4 sounds great but never try it. Love your channel take care ;-)
That is a long holiday my friend! I do enjoy picking up local tobaccos. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose! Hahaha! Great to see you in the good weather. Great looking Ser Jacapo!
Another wonderful video! Such a nice place for a pipe! I thought maybe you would be smoking a Butz choquin pipe in France LOL! I just purchased another Ser Jacopo pipe myself, and I love it. They are such fine pipes to smoke. So I guess your advice would be..."When in France, bring your own Pipe tobacco"! Be well Mark and Enjoy!
Smokin' Briar Hello Mike! ...yes, when I put up the camera, I damned myself, for not bringing my BC with me...but it`s always the same...when you pack your things, you try to restrict yourself...and when you´re there, you miss something... And yes, I think, you´re right...Ser Jacopo is one of the best pipe makers in Europe, I think. I love the italian pipes in general (L`anatra, Rinaldo, Maestro di paia, Viprati etc.), their style and (not to forget) their pretty good quality...unfortunately SJ is very expensive (at least in Germany)..and so..this SJ is my only one.. :-( I got this at Ronny´s place for a really fair price...and it smokes just great. Thanks for watching Mike and kind words! Be well my friend!
When my father was in france he wanted to buy classic french tobacco and the tobbaconist refused to sell him the stufg at first! My dad insisted that he didn't want some borkum riff but french tobacco and only then he got what he wanted!
Thank you for the video. I'm smoking quality tobaccos like the Escudo, the Capstan blue or the Nightcap, but for a very strange reason, I'm always falling back to the Saint Claude in between two quality blends. It packs something rooty, essential, kind of "to the point" feature that I can't let go. Nice channel BTW, you had me hit that subscribe button :)
Great video. As a lover of the French language and culture I've always wondered about French tobaccos and the like. Perhaps if I ever have the occasion to visit France I'll bring some of my own tobacco. Very informative. Take care:)
Pipe Trek Thanks for watching! ...and yes...give it a try...and let us know, how you liked it! Hope you get the chance soon - not just for the tobaccos :-) Be well!
When I lately visited France I found the Saint Claude tobacco. Dimly remembering this video, I bought the tobacco and, well, I quite like it! It won't become my everyday smoke of course (as I don't live in France, that would be impossible anyway), but it's a nice alternative to the usual, internationally available stuff. Definitely worth a try!
hello there. near Nice at the supermaket Carrefour Lingostiere you can find also pipe tabbaco.. I'm a pipe smoker also and I go there every time to buy it! Best regards!
Very true also check tobacco shop in Beauliu sur Mere they have all selection Of SG tabacco. Also you can buy Dunhill tabacco in promenade des anglais. Best choice you get in tabacco shop near market in Ventimiglia
Dear Mark, Schipper's tabak is not scandinavian; it is originally Dutch and also the name is Dutch. For sale everywhere in Holland and Belgium and France (didn't know that).
Thanks for taking the time...and intersting comment! Much appreciated! For my understanding the "tradition" is dutch...but it's produced by Orlik in Denmark... Take care! Be well! Mark
Then there is that traditional horrible Scaferlati caporal available even in Germany, but personally I prefer those belgian Semois over to these ones, back in the days I only smoked Gitanes and Gauloise cigarettes and liked them much, but nowadays cigarettes all over the eu region are becoming crappy due to a rectrictions in tar and nic contents, merci pour votre review, Paul
Glad I saw this.... I am going to France in September with my family, and was hoping to maybe find some interesting European-only tobaccos and/or pipes. I'll bring a bit extra with me, just in case. :-)
Well, just got back. Looked all over, including in Paris - came home with some Caporal, and Clan. Haven't tried them yet, but I got them for scientific purposes only. :-)
Next time you're going to visite France, you may wanna buy me a pouch of Scaferlati Bleu or Le Superior, and send it to us in an envelope,I will cover your expences. Beste Grüsse,&Nice weekend, Paul
Hi! Have you ever had the Italian Forte? It could be considered the italian cousin of caporal... At least because of its origin which is basically 'proletarian'
Thanks for that! Much appreciated! Yeah...I think, I smoked it many years ago...and (as far as I remember) completely agree... Take care! Be well! Mark
Hi, great video as always. I have a 50g package of French pipe tobacco NARVAL Melange Aromatique produced by Seita in my cellar. I can't find if it is still produced or when the production stopped. Is there more information availabe? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! No...unfortunately, I don't have much information about that.. Seita was a french company, that was fusioned with a spanish company...I think in 1999...and sold several years ago to imperial tobacco...but I don't know anything specific about the NARVAL... Take care! Mark
