  • Our first video in the Bass Trombone Essentials Series covering legato on trombone. Our main goal with legato is to play a note followed by a note with as little space in between as possible. One of the misconceptions trombonists can have about legato playing is to move the slide as smoothly as possible between notes in order to achieve this. However, moving the slide slowly creates a smear or a gliss in our sound between each note. Instead, we move our slides in a direct yet relaxed manner from note to note. This, when coupled with a soft tongue to clean up any residual noise from the slide in our sound, will aid in achieving the clear, defined yet connected sound we’re after in our legato, especially in this register.

Amazing tone and phrasing, Christopher! What do you use to record your playing?

I use a Canon Rebel t6i to record the video and an AT2020 microphone for my audio. I link it up in iMovie. It's a pretty basic setup but it gets the job done :)
