  • This home renovation is a constant work-in-progress. Every room is never truly done (I'm finding.) The kitchen is one that we've touched on in phases over the years and this summer, I finally tackled that backsplash! Commin' in hot with some classic subway tiles... but make it herringbone. ;) While this project nearly cost me my sanity, I'm so glad to have a brighter and fresher kitchen to rejuvenate in and make ALL the coffee. ;)

    You did this! So wonderful to see a woman doing it on her own. I paid a professional to do mine and yours look better. He even missed a piece that I will fix. Thank you for the encouragement!!!

    I didn’t expect this to be a blog. But baby I totally understand u. I’m 9 month pregnant and a 2 year old a new house and living in a one bedroom apartment. Attempting to do this project. As well as a 1000 other projects, and plan a baby shower, pack to move, and just get this house ready to live in.
    The stress of it all takes a toll some days.
    But all in all, I’m glad I saw your video. I honestly watched it to see the size spacers u used. Lol.
    U did great!

    First of all, take a moment to give yourself big congratulations for completing the project, for everything you learned along the way and for the beautiful tile backsplash that greets you every time you walk in your kitchen! Really celebrate by rewarding yourself w/ an at home spa day or whatever you like to do to pamper yourself. Second, I had to laugh because I decided to scrub all the grout lines on all the tile in our kitchen - countertops, backsplash, walls, ugh! I thought it would take an afternoon, but it's been 3 days and I'm almost done, lol! At some point during day 2 I had that "what was I thinking" moment. I hate that tile but my mother loves it, so I was trying to make it look better... It's scrubbed clean, but it's still hideous. 😂

      Thank you, Cheryl! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 I have your most recent self-care video on my watch list! 😍 You don’t have to twist my arm to take that advice…😉😁👏🏼
      So funny that you were dealing with your own backsplash traumas. ☺️ Im sure it looks so much better!! Dirty grout can bring down any tile work for sure. But yes, these projects are always so much more involved than they seem! If you lived close to me I’d come help you in a heartbeat. 🥰🙏🏼🤍

    Looks great! Somehow, we got it into our heads that a painted concrete floor was better than the cat pee indoor/outdoor carpet. We removed the carpet to find laminate tile from the 1970's. We started removing the floor which took a whole day. The glue was still all over the concrete floor. I went and bought the adhesive remover and a floor scraper from Home Depot. The glue was a pain to remove. Highly, highly do not recommend! We tried using paper towels at first, which did the job but took so much time. I then got the brilliant idea to use kitty litter. Bought two bags of it, it was pretty inexpensive. I figured if we used it in the auto shop to suck up oil then it would work in this situation as well. It worked very well. Spray a larger spot, let it soak for up to 30 minutes, then spread the kitty litter on it to soak up the tarry, black, adhesive. We then bought vinyl planks and tried to install them too. I couldn't get them to stay straight, got frustrated and hired someone to do it. lol.

    Omg what a beautiful, happy kitchen!!! As a fellow DIYer, I feel your pain at the "oh shit, what have I gotten myself into?"😅 We had a similar experience when we did our flooring. Love the final result though, and that's the main thing!

      What’s funny is there’s a part of me that thinks I’m teaching myself a skill for the next time I need to do it… but how many times in your life are you going to install a backsplash? Right? 😂 … The things we‘ll suffer through just to say we did it ourselves. 😘😁

    if you know someone with a steady hand or feel like hiring someone, they can use a grinder with a tile blade and cut those edges square. Then you can install a jolly (edge piece) to finish it off. Looks good though! You're scaring me for my upcoming herringbone install hahaha

    • @RachelStansfield
      @RachelStansfield  2 года назад

      Hiring someone to clean it up is sounding really nice right now… 😁🙏🏼 I’m curious to look into learning more about cutting already-installed tiling though! It might be a fun learning experience… You might have inspired my next project here. 😉
      Best of luck with your install! I’m sure you will find a process that’s much more efficient.🤞🏼 My issue has always been jumping in too soon before really understanding the steps. 🤷🏼‍♀️😅

      Hello, Gene! Unfortunately the time wasn’t right for our family to effectively go tiny, so that project was short lived. We sold the home before we completed it. All the videos regarding the tiny house should be linked in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLbrsnhMCVwclJK-yf5GmYIC9BbNE7mRkH
      I may revisit that adventure one of these years. Best of luck to you if you’re pursuing tiny living! 🤍🤍👏🏼
