#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

They don't _want_ to work on Save the World anymore, which is exactly why they're still charging money for it. Think about it. They announced they'll be slowing down updates, and every gamer _knows_ that's a death sentence. Existing players will eventually give up and leave, and nobody will come in to replace them because who wants to pay money for a dying game? Then Epic can use low player numbers as an excuse to finally pull the plug.

It really is a shame, because this concept I personally think is fascinating and hasn’t really been done before. There are tons of zombie survival games, and in many of them you can reinforce barriers but nowhere near as complex a system as Fortnite would’ve had. I love the idea of having to spend time gathering materials and customizing defenses based on scenario. But I guess we’ll never get that now

Came here to pay my respects. Fortnite’s concept struck me as an interesting idea and so I did what any other curious person would and pre ordered the founder’s edition of the game. I played it for months on end until I got bored of the rinse and repeat missions. Then, for no reason at all Battle Royale blew up. And at first, it was a good thing, until it wasn’t. A good and beloved game had to die so a fun, less fleshed out one could live.

Want to know why Fortnite really blew up? I remember. There was no other BR game on PS4, PS4 players were begging for Pubg to come out on PS4 but instead if was an Xbox exclusive. So once Fortnite came to PS4 gamers, it was a completely new genre, not to mention the rest of the shooting games that year were bad (correct me if I’m wrong, but that was the year Infinite warfare was released). Make no mistake, if PS4 had been given Pubg when its player base was at an all time high, I think it would’ve squashed any potential Fortnite would have had. The majority of the hype of Fortnite came from PS4 and it struck us as a new genre of gaming

Hi, so I wanted to point out that there is another side of the whole "veteran players not being retained" thing you briefly touched upon, and another possibly factor for the large decline in playerbase outside of what had already been mentioned. The players' culture namely. This is going to be a tad lengthy.
I'm someone who played STW for a long time, before BR came out. Not quite early release-release for reference. There was rampant problems where the community was not managed well. AFK/abusive players would get away scott-free because epic's report system was rather non-functional. This is important for later.
Shortly after the release of BR, things were going well and the new blood was curious about STW. It was a joy having new players to teach and those were the funnest moments I had with STW in a long while after the perpetual radio silence we experienced for months. We even started getting big updates to streamline progress and various quality of life. Those were good times.
Soon after "trading" became a big thing, especially among the younger portion of the playerbase. Not trading for resources, but for weapons. Weapons that merely had a legendary quality (not even being good as a weapon by gameplay standards) were highly valued by children like pokemon cards. Normally weapon-trading would be a boon since you had to fight the microtransactions to get anything worthwhile/usable later on. However in this case many children would disrupt actual gameplay to trade these weapons. This trading culture can still be seen today if you look up save the world, you *will* see at least one "scam/trade" video. It got so bad we lost global chat to it due to the spam/overload. So instead of sticking to that global chat, they would wander missions instead, not even playing the game half the time while being unwilling to learn the actual game on the other side of the coin.
See, I could put up with a lot of Epic's lying and radio silence. I went in used to it. It's when the community itself turned sour over time. Griefing, scamming, boxing people in, trolling, all became normal. STW was milked for vbucks so the BR-primary playerbase could purchase their skins with it instead of progress: which over time became more accessible, which then also lead to them reaching the endgame areas instead of the earlier areas (where veterans were able to hide once upon a time).
The community went bad, there was no moderation, epic was entirely silent, and what little gameplay I enjoyed over time was taken over by nerf culture every time a challenge mode similar to the 14-day survival was made. If I couldn't enjoy the game anymore, and I couldn't enjoy the players in a co-op multiplayer build-and-shoot, then what's the point?
I also had my account stolen once over the trading phenomena, but miraculously the thief in question (who had sold my account according to the new "friends" on my list) didn't change the password. I did so. The new owner nor their informative friend were happy. I restocked myself in no time because I knew where to find everything. This isn't to highlight the lack of intelligence or stupidity involved in this scenario, but to highlight that people were stealing and selling accounts and resources over save the world's honestly easy-to-farm materials and such. Because of trading. I also made a ticket to epic support and their automated(?) responder told me to report bugs in-game after writing several paragraphs detailing my missing items, suspicious friends added to my friend's list, and even the conversation involving them selling my account.
The big things that killed the veteran playerbases' confidence in epic wasn't just the silence, it was the continued unpunished abuse and series of poorly-implemented systems that punished legitimate players. P.S. There really needs to be a discussion and even potential civil suit against Epic...
Technically speaking, Epic used funds from one game to directly fund another venture, without ever delivering on the perceived promises originally put forth - AKA the reason why people gave up their money in the first place.
I can understand the idea of a spin off mode being funded by Epics with the profits they made from Fortnite originally...but when a company promises one thing, requires people to pay in advance to fund the development of said thing to completion and then turns around and abandons the project for no LEGITIMATE reason, only to use that money to fund something else that originally people never agreed to fund...some kind of law must have been broken.
Especially since at the time, STW was never in a state of ‘failing’ or financially troubled. I mean if Epic already had enough resources from Fortnite STW, to make another mode within the same game...odds are, the game was somewhat financially successful.
Last time I checked, making people pay for one thing - not delivering said thing, then using the money from the promised thing to fund something else that original buyers did not originally agree upon purchasing...is against the law in some countries. And at the least, would hold up in civil suit regarding business practices in many other countries.

Well theres an issue with this. The court system is kinda bad at handling this when it comes to games. Look at No Mans Sky when it launched. People tried but the court dismissed it over 1 small thing. It wasnt false advertising if they promised multiplayer and such, they only looked at the the back of the final retail box and it said "1 player only"
And everything else that box said it had was in some way "technically" true even though the advertising and developers promised something different.
The court system only sees the packaging and the final retail product as what to review. Not the leadup to it. If that was the case we would've seen many lawsuits over the years but its not how it works.

And I can’t imagine there being anything illegal about a company giving up on a game that they deem isn’t worth pursuing. And it’s not like people paid for a game and weren’t given a game. I was one of those original founding members who bought the game within the first week of launch and played for about a solid 2 years. The games more dedicated audience mostly came from other looter shooter games like Borderlands, which made sense since is gun design and gameplay were both pretty fun and creative. But not to go to a huge rant on the communitt itself, alot of issues and causes for players to leave the game Suprisenly wasnt burnout but lack of community mangement from Epic. As founding members most of the early months of the game were about figuring what was good, what was what, and grinding since you needed to do alot. In fact leaving the first area of the game, Stonewood, it was rare to have more then 1 or 2 legendary weapons. This created a player base where it was common to have player swap weapons or drop a gun for those who help or have good sportsmanship since the lack of good weaponry was a community issue. Over time Epic increased the drop rates on higher rarity cards, made the perks on weapons easier to control, and even made V-bucks so easy to get that the grind for them felt like basic dailies instead of the traditional F2P grind. All in All the game felt easy to get into and getting a good (or over powered)weapon or hero didnt take much anymore. But issues arouse because of how new players entered the game and how they were treated. Older players would hand out strong guns, as customary, as they go throw their basic vbuck grind or as a handout to a friend who just joined the game. To these new players these guns became gold to them. They traded them, sold them, bought them, and even ignored what the game was cause all they saw was cool looking guns. These were the trade kids and they were toxic.
Many of them stagnated themselves in early game and would barely participate in mission. While much of the community tryed to expand the knowledge of and help new players, trade kids ignored all the systems in game for " ohhh shiny strong gun". This created a toxic hard to play environment for low level and in higher levels they were often very low leveled, ill equipped (refusal to use their strong guns), and often demanded others to supply them with weapons since they wouldnt have any of their own to make since they didnt engage with the systems to level and make their own strong weapons. The chat system in game was often filled with them begging for trades, and they community experience overall was sour for anyone who didnt have someone to team up with.
This all was a massive turn away that ultimately made me leave the game even though I did enjoy it alot. Epics refusal to deal with these issues and the other developmental issues were the death of the game in my eyes. Because for us gamers who enjoy looter shooters, what we enjoy is shooting fun guns and having characters we play be designable to how we like to play and fortnite STW had all of that in spades.
TL;DR: Trade kids suck, BR and tencent screwed a game with amazing passion and vision, and fuck all of you who told me LMGs were bad. Mercury LMG and HackSaw are OP.

Meanwhile BR has had crossover after crossover with tournament after tournament. A comic series with DC and is still going strong with C2S7 being highly praised. As of writing this, one of BRs crossover events is stated to have STWs storm king with a completely revamped arena and some changes to the design, in that event and I wouldnt be surprised if STW isnt even mentioned or got the changes involved.

Save the world in the beginning was so fun. As someone who wasn’t (and still isn’t lol) good at pvp shooters, it was a great step into that world. But now it’s glitchy as ever, it’s so difficult to find players to play with, and the repetitive nature of the events are laughable. I constantly have issues with the servers matching me and most of the missions are hard af to do for one person (as well as the pressure on one persons resources). People used to pop into sessions all the time, now I’m lucky if I get matched in with more then one other player.

I’ve recently gotten back on STW and I was sorely disappointed.
While I admit I found STW from BR I had WAY more fun on STW and for months my time was slowly being put more into STW than BR then I quit BR. Dedicating my free time into playing it. I even passed my friend in progress in 5 months while he’d been playing for 10. I then read “The State of Development” I was shattered. And after that I just dedicated the rest of my time to another game Destiny 2. I’ve come back last week and I was sad to see empty servers. The once booming servers of finding a match immediately gone. I wish there was more development and I sure hope Epic doesn’t pull the plug. If any of my Home-base Commanders are out there and still playing, I love ya and thanks for trying to keep the game alive.

When EA bought out Bioware from Microsoft, the creative freedom the developer once had was gone. Karpyshyn explained that he felt like the creative aspect behind developing the ME series was removed in favor of "proven marketing schemes." What was once a fun job turned into just another mundane one that lacked the creative liberties Karpyshyn once had. (This is a rough quote from what he had said).

If I'm not mistaken, back in 2018, epic was saying that the 4 or 5 stages (cant remember) were part of one campaign of many to come, and to top it all, the next one would take you to the moon. When the storm king was released, we were so hyped that actually got the pin and waited for the next story component to arrive, bur it never did. • @rasmustagu

Save the World is.. was honestly my favorite looter and my preferred game over BR, having clocked into both of them over 3000 hours combined as of some time last year when I detached myself from the game. I like grindy games and the resources & how the game managed them was perfect, I liked the complicated yet intuitive skill and survivor trees, but I don't think even Epic knew what made it so great. People wanted the story to continue, the one that was released only half finished, events and just more of the game. Nobody asked for the skill trees, schematics, menus and all that to get reworked - but that's what they did. It took them 6 years to publish half of the game, after year to publish another quarter and to this day -EVEN WITH THE GAME BEING FULLY RELEASED, they've yet to finish the remaining quarter. I find it insulting and hypocritical of them to promise the game to be finished & launched for free during the spring of 2018, then delayed indefinitely only to be released as a paid product and still unfinished, with the promise of slowing down the update process. We all know very well why this happened. Added content is recycled from BR or previous events, very rarely you get something, anything new and when you do, it usually is there to screw up the games economy and previously established features. Remember the trading scene? Full of kids trying to get your guns but it was still a lot of fun. Now there are no such things as "rare guns".
I'm going off on a tangent, one which I see no final point to, but where I wanted to get to was basically that the updates they did make were the wrong ones, ones that changed the game for the worse and now we're just waiting for Epic to Paragon it.

Fortnite Save The World being left behind was the biggest gaming upset for me, EVER. I paid the 120$ package, pulling 2 other friends into the game with me. I saw so much potential and it honestly has some of my favorite weapons in any game. My favorite weapon was easily the shotgun sniper. So much fun.

The original fortnite could have been a good game.
After playing the battle royale when it first came out, i found it really fun but as a person who isn’t a fan of multiplayer games, it didn’t stick. Then I saw that fornite was a pve game originally and that made me very intrigued. I already liked the way it played so it was very appealing. I didn’t end up playing it but the interest was still there since I believed that they could eventually make it free or offer a demo for people to try. Also believed if they would add the stuff they did for the battle royale, Many of the new things the battle royale has gotten has been meet with criticism due to throwing game balance out of the window. An issue that doesn’t really exist in pve games.
Like just imagine killing zombies while flying planes or using mechs etc. It sounds fun to me.
However Epic has disappointed people once again. Right now fortnite’s community is deteriorating and the apple lawsuit isn’t helping as people are feeling used by the company to fight another big corporation just to get their game back. Most that’s left are kids and new comers who don’t know better. Such a shame.

    • @Disciple_JK
      @Disciple_JK 3 года назад

Dude, come on. The community has been "deteriorating" since Season 7, and yet it's still one of, if not the biggest game in the world. And "new comers who don't know better" sounds like you're calling people fucking delusional for not sharing your opinions on something they don't have to care about.

SpringyPlush64 being one of the biggest games in the world doesn’t mean much when it’s mostly children playing the game. They don’t care about a game’s quality or how it respects their time. Epic can’t improve and change their games if their audience aren’t old or intellectually capable to give criticism or suggestions.
And yeah, people are delusional if they are supporting epic during this lawsuit. Epic is trying to make their current community rebel against Apple. A multi billion dollar corporation using its users as a way to fight another multi billion dollar corporation. It’s not a small issue. They have to be delusional or at least children if they don’t realise that. Ignoring the current situation is what makes these big companies take advantage of people like you.

What OP meant was that Epic Games went from being cool and humanly decent game devs to greedy doucebags who spat in the hands that fed them. Those hands were people supporting StW over BR. Epic stopped trying with StW and just threw in the towel after years and years of working on it just to focus on BR only.

As a once hardcore STW player (stopped playing after this year's July announcement), I think you got a fewwwww things wrong. STW DID have major updates. They completely changed major parts of the progression early 2019. They added a whole new way to combine heroes (the playable characters) to have totally different ways of play, from having a loadout specialized around eating coconuts and throwing cannonballs to increasing your structure's health by 400% and smashing things with hammers. When the STW team was still following BR's storyline, the events with the characters they gave out and the new things those events added were SUPERB. They added at LEAST 100 hours of MAIN CAMPAING, excluding the event campaigns, in 2019. Not to mention how much they added in 2018 relating to the campaign. The holiday events, such as those for Halloween, Saint Patricks, and Christmas were AMAZING. They added 16 amazingly thought out, fun to use weapons from Haloween of 2020- Christmas 2020, from an assualt rifle that shoots snowballs to a sword that sacrifices your health for creating explosions that do HIGH damage. I also can't stress enough how good the ost is, it's amazing.
Then after christmas it just... stopped.
Almost three months later, and we get the St. Valentine's update. Well, okay, that's not otpimal, but the last St Valentine's update was INSANE, with the last mission having you build a FRICKING TREBUCHET!
It sucked. The St valentine event didn't even bring new heroes. It was just the old heroes copy and pasted to a slightly different campaign storyline.
Then there was no update after that. I'm not even kidding. There was literally no STW update from February-July, when they made the announcement that they were releasing the game with a 75% complete storyline and call it "complete". In each of the 4 regions of the STW map, they have unique biomes. Epic promised this for the only region that doesn't (which also happens to be the endgame region), and then completely walked it back. They promised a Twine Storyline. Walked back on that too.
I can't finish the story here without what i though would be the redemption. Shortly after that announcement of them bringing it out from 1.0, they came out with their main "New Feature!" called Ventures, which was supposed to create all this new replayability. Now, it both solidified the coffin in the nail that this game was never going to continue, and also has expanded it's lifespan at the same time. They added a new Biome, and for a first season of the feature it wasn't bad. But for the haloween themed venture, Epic has shown an unwillingness to actually improve the feature.
Rest in Peace, Save the World. I hope a good company that can take care of you buys you out.

I remember having a friend buying a Fortnite 4-pack deal and giving me one of the copies.
I remember him asking my first reaction and I called it "Minecraft, with guns and a slapstick cartoon style." The style reminded me of Dead Island crossed with TF2, and it kind of grew on me. The guns were pretty decent, the concept of building a base made you have to work together, and pickaxing your way Red Faction-style through a house never got old.
We saw BR releasing and I laughed it off, since they already stole Minecraft's idea for zombie tower defense, and now they were going to take MC Hunger Games.
Haven't watched this video, but I know it'll hurt.

Fortnite STW is one of the most interesting cases and you did a great job as always covering tho there is also one other big issue that helped cause some big problems and that was the emergence of some of the voice cast in getting other roles. The VA for Ramirez Adria Arjona for instance was one of the major focal points of the story but she began to get large roles once the game was already out for a bit thus they ended up re-writing the whole story to focus more on Penny and changed so much. This altered what would’ve been the final campaign. As someone who played from day one it made it really jarring and left a lot open. It’s really interesting to think if things would’ve been different had they planned more ahead with the story and find out from staff how much they had already prepped that they had to abandon. It really is quite the case study
