Something I have done to set myself up for success is 1. Open a grocery store debit card for groceries only. I deposit my money every payday and only spend what is on that card. 2. I have an excel spreadsheet that I add all my stuff into every Monday to keep track of my weekly/monthly spending.

I saw a video where the guy went around to food banks and grocery stores to get food that was going to be thrown away. He used it for his chickens and pigs. The animals loves it.
I am inspired by your recap!
I want to try a 50 budget week like you did.
I have been making Mondays our leftover night so that we are using up all our food and not forgetting anything.
I am excited this month because we are taking some of our cows to be processed so that will be cutting down on our grocery budget when it comes to buying meat.
We had alot of company this month so that made for a higher month, but definitely worth it.
I enjoy your videos so much!
You are a joy to listen to!
Hope this next month you will stay well!
    Blessings!

I do an inventory of everything in my pantry, fridge and freezer and then do my monthly meal plan based on what we already have so I know exactly what I need and when like I know we need snow peas to make the stir fry which we prefer fresh so I need to make that close to a trip to the store but we like frozen corn and I already have that in the freezer so we will have that with chicken and rice. It helps me stick to my $200 budget for my family of three. I use up everything to make the most of our resources but being sick as a mom is the worst and the hardest because there is no one to fill in for everything you do. You rocked it without even knowing it.

Last year I grew my own snow peas and froze them .When I make a stir fry, I take some out, run them under warm water, chop them to add to my stir fry. You don't need many per stir fry anyways.

I just went to an Independent Grocery store and was able to purchase a year's supply of paper towels and toilet tissue for $45. Toilet tissue was $.32/ roll and they were double rolls. The paper towels were $.65.
$26.41/ person/week is not bad at all !

I just wanted to say thank you for your video's. I like how you are so transparent. You are very encouraging. Due to listening and watching your videos My husband and I sat down and began writing down everything we spend. The first month was very eye opening and it helped us make some choices. Because of those choices we have been able to get into better control of how we want to spend. You had mentioned be completely cash based.... We live in a rural community and sometimes getting to the bank can be inconvenient... so we actually opened another account that is nothing but food, household and animals... this enables us to use the debit card like cash and keep us on track because we only put what the budget is and a bit to hold the account open. It has helped us so much.
Also, the fact you can get away with $500 on a family of 5.... you are doing awesome. I look forward to your future content. Again, thank you so very much for being willing to share your heart and life with all of us.

Thanks so much for your honesty. Shew February was rough for you and I pray you are feeling much better. As far as groceries for February I spent $200 for my family of 5. However, I have a very well stocked pantry that I have been building for several years with 5 gallon buckets of flour, dried corn for grinding my own corn meal, hard and soft wheat berries, as well as smaller buckets of salt, sugar, rice, oats, pasta, etc. I also can vegetables and fruits in season from my garden and the store when they are on sale. We also have laying hens and raise beef cattle. We process a beef every year so I don't purchase a great deal of meat. I also shop at Kroger for the most part. I watch their sale flyer and purchase milk and other staples when they are on sale. I am very thankful for the pantry that I have and my chickens and beef cattle that we raise every month, but more so during February. We have been rebuilding our house after storm damage a few months ago and it was time to replace the sofa and chair. So I spent $900 on that this month. Then my oldest son had some medical issues which cost $325. I was stocked up on house hold supplies thankfully as well. Our animal feed isn't much. Around $50 a month for the chickens and we produce our own hay for the cattle so we don't have to purchase that. We do feed grain some in the winter, but didn't have that cost in February either. I know this is long, but sometimes we see small numbers in peoples budgets, but we don't know how they keep those numbers low. I would like to eventually add a milk cow to our farm which would cut the grocery cost even more. Thanks again for all of the great content.

Put your pasture in sections and route them each day so the grass can grow. It benefits your cattle and the land.
My husband is on a$25 grocery budget and $$150 first of the pay cycle stock up. My husband has cancer, and the bills are stacking on that. I pay on it what I can. It shameful the out rages prices they charge. Glad you are feeling better.

I think I’ve said this before, but I really enjoy your channel and especially appreciate the transparency and honesty that always shines through. My next challenge will be to try making our own dog food, we have four little terriers (2 Scotties and 2 Westies). We love them to the moon and back, but they eat mostly boneless skinless chicken breast so their food bill is actually higher than for the humans…unless our boys are home from college! We plan to add veggies and maybe some brown rice. Not sure how it’ll work! Hoping you are feeling much better very soon and that you’ve gotten your sickness out of the way for the year! Congrats to Lane!

Hello Lori I spent about $700 on groceries we are 5 but we have 2 teen boys and they eat a lot and my daughter is 17 and eats like an adult. I went 3 months with very minimal household purchases about $20 a month but today we went to replenish all the household items that we were low on or out of and spent $150 between dollar tree and walmart. Animal feed we only have a picky cat and her cat litter, dry food, wet food and treats are about $50 for the month. I think we could do a little better on the food budget during the school year because my kids get free lunch and breakfast at school they don't always like the food but if they don't want what the school offers they need to pack a lunch I packed lunches for them until they went into high school and now its their responsibility to pack it but where I was going with this is in summer they will all be home for 11 weeks and I think the budget will be closer to 700. I think I want to try a $50 grocery challenge and see if it will help. I am so proud of Lane potty training and becoming a young man! Great video takw care and stay safe!

You did well this month. I have to increase my protein so I’ve spent more this month than planned. I’ve been investigating and some high protein foods include fish (fresh or canned. Fish sticks etc are not so great. Tuna is good but limit how much you eat due to mercury concerns - maybe once or twice a week). Cottage cheese has loads of protein. If you can get Icelandic yoghurt (Skyr) it has loads of protein, too. It’s not a budget choice though. Greek yoghurt is a second best option. Always read the label for protein content. Beans and lentils are a source of protein for cheap but they are lower than fish and dairy. Edamame (boiled soybeans) are the highest in protein. I also occasionally eat tofu which is made from soy. In moderation, it’s ok. Two large eggs have around 14g of protein. Of course meat has protein but it’s pricey. I understand ground Turkey is cheaper than ground beef in your area so try that switch. Make sure to buy as lean ground Turkey as you can find. There are 30g of protein in 3.5 ounces of lean ground Turkey! I add Worcester sauce to my ground Turkey to give it a more umami flavour. Add a cup of milk and stuffing mix or seasoned bread crumbs and it makes a nice meatloaf. In the end I bought some protein powder to boost the protein in a daily shake I make with Skyr and kefir and fruit. I don’t use a whole scoop, just maybe 1/4 or 1/3 to stretch it. Costco was the cheapest place for me to buy it. Good luck! 💖

@@homemadesimplewithloriI did it on doctor’s advice too, because of long Covid symptoms. I have been on a mission of looking at protein content. I didn’t mention nuts and seeds because they can come with the problem of high fats and high cost, but you can also add some of those, too. I look forward to hearing more on your protein journey. I think extra protein will also help you recover from being sick.

I started March off with 137.73 for groceries. I will try to spend 75.00 at Aldis it because I want to buy a few of there German foods they carry this month. Last month I spend 300.12 for Fenuary. I spend only 89.00 in January because my hubby was in the hosipal for 2 weeks and rehab for 3 weeks son I didn't;t need too much to eat just some fresh veggie and fruit and dairy products. My goal for this year no more than 100.00 a week for 2 people will will see. Because we stay home most day we only spend about 50,00 on gas for our car we grocery shop about every 10 day and we go to Church every week. of course we have Doctor appoints a lot because of our age but it is what is. Were bless to have a nice monthly income being retired for 19 years now.

I was even trying to kind of follow a pantry challenge type menu. I need to get it down to $400 for some comfort in the budget.

I think you did great, Lori! I was so encouraged because I ended up having my appendix out in early February (with a 4 day hospital stay) and our grocery budget was blown because my sweet husband doesn’t really cook and was at a loss on what to feed the children. It made me so aware of prepping for life’s “little” emergencies like illness or being unable to cook food. A freezer with simple meals to heat up or more packaged snacks would have been so much easier for him. Lesson learned! Keep up the awesome work!!

I make freezer meals as I cook certain foods. Like today I made egg, turkey bacon, cheese on English muffins for breakfast. So, I made four for the freezer. If I make pan cakes will make extra and freeze, same with waffles. Then when I make soup will double it and freeze one meal, same with spaghetti, or if I make rice, I freeze 2 cups, then when I make fired rice, I double the skillet part and freeze half before I add rice. Beans I make extra, Sauage same.

LORI, I have a suggestion for you::: if you use the envelopes that come in with your bills for your receipts then it's less stressful. As you put the receipts in the envelopes write the amounts down and tally them. This will help you know how much you have spent. Another thing to do is do a separate check out of household items or if that's not possible then put them at the end of your order so it's easier to tally without having to go through the whole recipe looking for them. Most people say that groceries per person is around $125.00 a month so you did good. I'm not sure what the amount a month is for household items. Pet food well that's another story in of it's self lol. Sorry you where sick but thankful you are feeling/ doing better. ❤

Mathematically, it will cost you more to raise your own livestock than to buy the products commercially due to federal subsidies provided to big farms. You will not profit unless you slaughter. It’s a main reason why I chose to go plant-based.
Side note: Excellent job on your food budget! Side note: Slowly catching up on your videos!

The quality of products you get from raising your own pigs and chickens and a cow far outweighs any cost savings from buying factory farmed meat, eggs and milk!
