I'm a musician and have been using a multi effects box plugged into my laptop to record for 6 years. I've primarily been using Audacity and Wavepad to record. For some reason, now, the applications can read my device that's plugged into my laptop and I can check it in as my chosen Input/Output device (I run my headphones through my Effects Multi box) but they won't pick up any sound signal coming from my Effects Multi Box. They pickup the sound signal from my built in mic when I check it in but when it reads my USB device plugged into my laptop, It reads it, I can check it in, but it won't read the sound signal and hence the application won't record due to no sound signal. Also, you don't need an interface either (it's not mandatory) just generate clik track add a new stereo track and press record (provided the output is through the speakers) then follow the steps in the video . You might need to do it twice, like one main reading and a second and final accurate reading . My first was -143 milliseconds . Then I played it back and it felt like a chorus . My problem is when I sing into the mic there is a delay from the mic to my headphones... so I can’t even get through a song. Is there anything that can be done to help that?

You Sir are an audacity master. Very helpful and knowledgeable. Btw the new version of audacity 2.4.1 has a new loudness normalizing effect. Which can normalize tracks to LUFS standards eg -14 which Spotify uses etc. The new effect proves you were correct in saying that the middle representation of the track displayed, is perceived loudness or amplitude. Something I have long felt as well. I did some batch normalizing mp3s, using it and noticed it disregarded the peaks representation and tried to match the middle solid color in amplitude instead. In the loudness wars I never felt music sounded good maxed out to zero db....but everyone has their preference. I use to normalize previously at -2db with audacity. Now I am using the new loudness normalizing effect at -14 lufs. or perceived loudness. There is also a newer version of audacity version 2.42...but that has a problem decoding some mp3 files. I saw many people having that problem as well well I googled the errors. Someone in a forum recommended using version 2.41 instead. I did, and it solved the issue.

may i ask? how to record using audacity in vocals in real time while listenimg to my voice on my headset.... I have my audio track already but everytime i record there is this latency....
That’ll always be the case with software monitoring. You really need an audio interface with hardware monitoring. Most usb audio interfaces have this feature
What about a delay in headphones signal? I think some setting must have been changed (I was messing around with another audio interface) because I am no longer able to plug my headphones into my computer and hear myself speaking without a delay as I record from my webcam! I know about the solution of turning off transport software playthrough, but doing that means I can't hear my voice through headphones at all. Do you have an idea what setting I could have inadvertently changed (I could hear my webcam signal with zero latency before)?
Any time you're monitoring through software you're going to get a delay. Does your webcam have some kind of direct monitoring option? I've never seen that, but would be the only way you could hear it without delay.
@@demonicsweaters Man, thank you so much... just your mention of direct monitoring option fixed it, first on my Behringer USB audio interface which DOES have a direct monitor option, and then for some magical reason, my webcam as well! Whew. Thank you for the quick response... you rock!

When I overdub, the outcome of the track Im recording on gets messed up. Like the volume is suddenly going out then back on, periodically. What do I do?
May I ask if it's mandatory to use TWO inputs and one headphone out? I'm asking this because my audio card (Roland/Cakewalk UA4-FX) only has only ONE input and when I connect the mic/guitar input to headphones out it produces a loud noise signal that prevents recording the click from the track in audacity.
no, you don't need two inputs. One will be fine, you'll just be limited to mono inputs, but that's not that big a deal and won't stop you from mixing in stereo.
Bro can you make a tutorial on audacity to remove crackling and popping sound while gaming video recording I get that a lot and my commentary gets ruined
Do I need to have an audio interface, to do this latency test? I'm very new to recording at home. I've got a USB snowbal mic for recording. Thanks in advance
you could do the test by holding your mic up to the speaker to record the click sound. Just make sure you have the correct sound devices selected in Audacity.
i manage to get it working but i have few issues. echo is one the issues, althought i can tell which one is the real one and which ones are the feedbacks, what puzzles me is from all the tutorial i watch, none of you guys seems have this problem. I do use voicemeeter as my software mixer, but I have been using years with it so i am quite familiar with it. I am also using an interface to play and record, maybe i should turn down the monitor volume in that (yep thats it)
Can you help me??? When I play time records on headphone it’s clear but when I want other people to listen to it I’ll put it on my speaker on my laptop and it’s hella scratchy!!!! How do you fix that?
Demonic Sweaters nah I fixed it. My laptop speakers are fine. I tested it out listening to Music. It was something with the audacity settings. Idk what I did but I fixed it lol
I do the exact steps but how do you make sure you highlighth the extact portion? .. you don't seem to do it very meticulously and it still works. When I do the same it goes off, the latency is still off
@@demonicsweaters yeah I forgot to mention that.. even when I zoom in I make sure to highlight the exact portion, get the negative number and it's still off, I don't know what I'm doing wrong
I have done this step already. But now what I am trying to fix, if possible, is when you lick on the microphone buton and select Start Monitoring', I'll still hear a delay between my USB SUDOTACK ST-800 USB microphone pluged in and my wireless 2.4 GHz headphones. How can this be addressed?
What you're hearing is the audio latency of your computer. This will always be present if you are using software to monitor your sound. The solution is to use a professional audio interface that features a direct monitoring feature like this one amzn.to/38eZpoU
So, I am with a Focusrite with a microphone MXL 990 and with a MacBook. I have selected my microphone as input and my speakers of the computer as output to correct the latency. The moment I add the track and click the record button the audio of the first track doesn't play any sound...So as the audio doesn't play my micro doesn't record any audio unless I speak....Could you help me on this?
Why are you using the internal speakers on the Macbook? The Focusrite is designed to be used as an input and an output. Plug some headphones into it or plug it into external speakers then make sure it's assigned correctly in the audacity settings, as well as in OSX. You would never really want to use laptop speakers in a recording environment, nor two different interfaces generally (unless you're trying to get more inputs).
@@demonicsweaters I was doing that to try to correct latency. When I connect my headphones to the Focusrite and put them as output there is latency between the moment I speak and what I am hearing.... I don't know how to solve it...
I have recorded a silly song for Halloween and an instrumental with Audacity by simply just using my laptop's built-in mics! (Yikes). Yes...I know.....LOL - they are the only recording equipment I have at present, but while these recordings are hardly what you would call studio quality, they have actually come out surprisingly good and seemingly low noise (on my laptop at least). I turned them into RUclips videos and they came out not too shabby at all. I am planning to get an audio interface soon and I will no doubt have to readjust the latency settings again for that interface, won't I?
Is there any way to adjust the latency after it's been recorded? My mic's audio recording and video are way off time so I need to adjust the latency on the audio recording so I can match it up with my video. Thanks!
While trying to record, I keep getting a slap back in my cans of my instrument which makes it hard to record. How can I stop the slap back While recording a track? Thanks.
Can you describe the cable you're using? ... Looks like it has three sides, or ends. Two "ends' on one side of the cable and one "end" on the other side ... Also, is there a reason you need to use the two inputs (3 and 4 in the video)? ... Or could you just run a regular cable (two ends) from one input to the headphone output?
@@demonicsweaters so, it sounds like any old cable, like a typical 1/4 inch guitar cable would work. I was confused, b/c it looked like you were using a cable with two "male ends" on one side, and one male end on the other.
@@demonicsweaters The interface I have only has two channels. I patched from one channel into the headphones, followed your directions, and it appears to have worked. Thanks!!!!!
Question I thought I fixed the latency issue on Audacity at least I can record three tracks and they line up perfectly but when I go to record the fourth track its like the latency is back is that a common problem and why does that happen?
@@demonicsweaters ok cool. So if it's already set at -30 milseconds. And the click track is lined up it should be good. My settings in audacity were already at -30.
Has anyone figured out why when you choose to record a New Track it's completely silent, and ticking from the first track isn't being picked up like in the video? Using a focusrite 2i2 and yes direct monitoring is selected.
Demonic Sweaters Not sure I understand your question using the equipment I have. I’m using a Focusrite 2i2, I plug my mic into one of the inputs and hook my interface into my laptop.
After I add the new track and select it, I pressed record. After I press record, NOTHING happens. It doesn't start recording the click sound. It just starts recording silence. Please help.
Thank you for both your vids on latency. They are very clear and straight to the point. Good job! I have a particular scenario with Audacity, and was wondering if you can help me. This is my very first time I'm trying to record so please be patient if I sound like a true novice. I am using a Notebook, and a Behringer UCA222 interface connected to a Samson MDR 1064 8 channel mixer. UCA222 is receiving (input) signal from 2 track (output) from the mixer via RCA cables. UCA222 connects to the PC via a USB. I purposely have not connected the UCA22 output to the mixer so I do not turn it crazy sending and receiving the same info (am I correct in this?) Since I'm not generating any audio from the UCA222, I hooked up my headphones directly to the PC, and adjusted this in Audacity. Now, when I try to record voice, it comes out with latency on the headphones, and makes it difficult to continue recording. How can I fix this?
you should monitor though the same interface you are recording into. You can plug your headphones into the behringer or the mixer. You can actually run the signal back to the mixer, as long as you do not route the signal back to your computer which will cause a feedback loop. Most mixers come with instructions on how to do this correctly. Good luck!

@@demonicsweaters thank you very much! I'm gonna give this a try.
Amy Fasola did it work?
Thank you so much now i can record with it on time
When I highlight the selection, audacity doesn't show any length of miliseconds at the bottom. Why. There is a definite lag.
i manage to get it working but i have few issues.
echo is one the issues, althought i can tell which one is the real one and which ones are the feedbacks, what puzzles me is from all the tutorial i watch, none of you guys seems have this problem.
How do you fix that?
if it's clear in your headphones, but sounds bad on the laptop speaker, it's most likely because laptop speakers sound.. well ... bad.
Demonic Sweaters nah I fixed it. My laptop speakers are fine. I tested it out listening to
Music. It was something with the audacity settings. Idk what I did but I fixed it lol
I do the exact steps but how do you make sure you highlighth the extact portion? .. you don't seem to do it very meticulously and it still works. When I do the same it goes off, the latency is still off
just by zooming in very close
The solution is to use a professional audio interface that features a direct monitoring feature like this one amzn.to/38eZpoU
also, by using wireless headphones you're creating additional latency. Wireless is for consumer music listening, not recording.
I am planning to get an audio interface soon and I will no doubt have to readjust the latency settings again for that interface, won't I?
haha, that's great. Yes, you will have to reconfigure it. Most interfaces come with some kind of better DAW than audacity though.
What if my audio interface has usb output?
how can any audio interface not have an audio output?
did you ever figure this out? because my interface is usb as well and I don't understand the whole plug your output in your input thing.
thanks man. WHen I create new track, and start recording, it does not start form the beginning. of the track
Is there any way to adjust the latency after it's been recorded? My mic's audio recording and video are way off time so I need to adjust the latency on the audio recording so I can match it up with my video. Thanks!
You can use the time adjust tool (the thing that looks like two arrows pointing outward) and just manually adjust it.
how about monitor audio latency...soo annoying while recording, how do i fix it. im trying to hear my voice while singing but its coming late
Frankie Joseph you need to use Hardware monitoring, not software monitoring. Most USB interface is have this option.
While trying to record, I keep getting a slap back in my cans of my instrument which makes it hard to record. How can I stop the slap back While recording a track? Thanks.
Turn off software playthrough in the settings.
A big thank you for the video, saved me a lot of time, thanks again.
Great tutorial, thanks! This will help me fix the problem I had with my 2i2.
how do i go to record the rhythm track? every time i select new mono track it only seems to record at the end... stressing me out

The type of cable will depend on what type of interface you have. As long as you're sending an output to an input, it'll work.
Thanks!!!!!
good, yeah it doesn't really matter if you use one or two channels, as long as an output is going to an input you can get the measurement.
Won't work for me is my pc too slow/old? Using a behringer um2 and trying to get it to work with USB snowball....
because the snowball and a um2 are two different interfaces. I'm not sure there's a way to adjust it this way.
@@demonicsweaters yeah I figured so. Thanks anyways. Guess I buy another xlr
this is not working for me, the latency is still the same, my voice is still starting later than the audio file. this sucks
Thank you so much. This is the tutorial I was looking for.
You're welcome!
Question I thought I fixed the latency issue on Audacity at least I can record three tracks and they line up perfectly but when I go to record the fourth track its like the latency is back is that a common problem and why does that happen?
that's odd, is it all though the same input?
@@demonicsweaters yes itsvthru the same input. I tried re recording something and it straightened out.thats odd tho
It just did it again with the latency issue. Im recording line 6 amplifi tt theu the usb cable direct into a mac
Strange, maybe it’s the usb device
LEGEND FINNALY A good video
Hi, im kinda worried because its still out of sync.
Thank you very much! This is still applicable to the 2.4.2 version, as of November 7 2020! ^^
You're welcome!
thanks dude! that was really informative.
my pleasure
Do you still have to do this if your not using an interface and just plugging directly into laptop?
yep, built-in audio is still an audio interface, it's just built in.
@@demonicsweaters ok cool. So if it's already set at -30 milseconds. And the click track is lined up it should be good. My settings in audacity were already at -30.
Thank you so much, this helped me out a TON, you're awesome!
Its not working still off omg on a mac laptop please help
I still have delay. It's because my i3 / 8 gb laptop isn't powerful enough right?
That shouldn't matter, you're not getting rid of latency, just compensating for it after you record with this setting.
That's the trick. Fixed me right up. Greatly appreciated!
Has anyone figured out why when you choose to record a New Track it's completely silent, and ticking from the first track isn't being picked up like in the video? Using a focusrite 2i2 and yes direct monitoring is selected.
Did you run the output to the input of the interface?
Demonic Sweaters Not sure I understand your question using the equipment I have. I’m using a Focusrite 2i2, I plug my mic into one of the inputs and hook my interface into my laptop.
Thank you. It was driving me mad. All good. Cheers man.
After I add the new track and select it, I pressed record. After I press record, NOTHING happens. It doesn't start recording the click sound. It just starts recording silence. Please help.
same, did you discover a solution?
Daniel aakhus I ended up fixing it. I have to go back in my computer & then I’ll explain! :) Reply back to this so I don’t forget in the morning.
I purposely have not connected the UCA22 output to the mixer so I do not turn it crazy sending and receiving the same info (am I correct in this?)
Since I'm not generating any audio from the UCA222, I hooked up my headphones directly to the PC, and adjusted this in Audacity.
Good luck!
@@demonicsweaters Thanks! I will try your suggestions today. Have a good Sunday.
Veeeery helpful, thank you so much!
