HAND Pollinate Your Squash for Guaranteed Harvest!

- Sometimes our plants need a little helping hand from us and zucchini or really any squash are no strangers to needing some manual pollination. Its quite easy to tell the male flower and female flower apart and from there its just a matter of making things happen. Some plants, like tomatoes and peppers, have both flowers in one and don't really need any help in this way!
This is oddly intimate
No is not you sick pervert.

It *is* sexual reproduction 😏
My thoughts exactly 😂

normally the cuck bees do it for you
Well, now I know that even food gets more action than me

Same 💀💀💀💀
Don’t call my single ass out like that 😭
Well, unless you want your descendants eaten, it should be better this way
I mean… technically you could just settle for people you don’t like 😂
Thankfully God has blessed my garden with an abundance of bees. I love free labor.
You sound like you fit in the 1600's era
@@alejandroangulo327bro I was thought the same thing ☠️☠️☠️☠️
And that's another day of feeding the beeezzzzz
If only they pulled the weeds 🥲
squash bees have taken over...
My fellow gardeners: You can also store the flower/q-tip in the fridge in case you have female flowers open the next morning, but no male flowers. I have used this is the past with success. The pollen doesn't last very long though, so you have to replace your backup as soon as you have another male flower. A single male flower can pollinate many female flowers.
*Note: I keep them in a plastic baggie with air inflated before I close the baggie and the stem wrapped in a damp paper towel.
Thank you !! I was wondering if it can be stored
Good to know
Oh yeah he can 😉😉😘
How long can you keep it in the fridge? My male flower has been sitting in the fridge for a week, wonder if its still good 😂
@@dbreen733 I only kept them for a day, maybe two if I was really desperate since I only had one plant - a volunteer lol
This looks NSFW 😅
I'll allow it 🧑⚖️
Yeah I used to do this for my pumpkin plants and it always felt dirty lol

it is
pollination is sexual reproduction in plants so
…this is just plants mating
growing squash is so intimate

@mig697 Seems you have a lot of experience with that, Receiving, that is.
Hats off for managing to say that with a straight face...
That felt dirty 😅
Did... did I just watch Plant pornography?
That was something man 🫣
You can eat the petals too! They are sosooooo so delicious I promise! I sautée them and they taste squashy 😋
My mother would always fry the male blossoms after using them to pollinate the female blossoms. After rinsing she would flour then fry them. They always had a slight nutty taste with the squash flavor.
I was about to comment this! You can eat them as a filling for quesadillas, and they’re super tasty!
You can just eat the flower. We used to bread and fry them
Thats interesting, I've never liked squash texture, but enjoy the taste. Do the flowers taste like squash without the nasty squishiness of cooked squash?
I think they have a more earthy flavor.
We use them a lot where I'm from.
Mostly in quesadillas (maybe you can Google empanada de flor de calabaza) and Guías (a soup thicked with nixtamal masa and has all of the zucchini plant (guías is the name of the zucchini plant vines) it's easy to make and a nice soup for fall or winter)
@@GlorifiedGremlinkinda but I think it has a more satisfying earthiness to
It. They have that somewhat squash/zucchini taste but without that secondary aftertaste that comes with the actual veg.
Used to have a neighbor with bees that took care of this but had to move. I use a q-tip now. Works great

One summer we had a courgete plant that kept flowering one sex at a time. We got 0 courgettes that year 😅
Save your male flowers in the fridge for the next day when the females are open.
When you don't take the initiative, but have good friends to help you in the process
Ooooo she never done that position before
Squash flowers are actually very tasty and a great ingredient for traditional italian pizza with fresh muzz
Didn't know you can do this. I am SO going to use this against my father's garden 😂. Watch out dad that shinny golden scissors is MINE! 😂😂😂😂
I feel dirty for watching what he did with those flowers
This short led to a 20 minute rabbit hole that was a rollercoaster of emotions on whether a plant I grew in my backyard is actually a pumpkin or not only to find out that squash is pumpkin.
Keep them comming Jaque 😅
😂😂😂😂
Great timing, my cucumbers, pumpkins and zucchinis are flowering like crazy.
A tip to help with pollenation is removing the big fan leaves to make sure the flowers are visible.
Im uncomfortable and I don’t know why lol.
In Italy we fry and eat those flowers, the are delicious.
Flowers matings
Now I really want stuffed squash blossoms.
Going to try it
And that's how you get giant pumpkins, better pollination means more seeds, which means bigger pumpkins
This is a respectable platform Sir!. Such blush inducing content should come with a warning😂😂😂
Even zucchini is getting more action than me. 😂😂😂
"Now when a father squash and a mother squash love each other very much..."
In Italy we fry and eat these flowers, they're amazing
I feel like I shouldn't be watching this at work 😂
If there is a higher being out there that created these plants like this, they have a pretty good sense of humor
Thanks. I didn't know this and it's very helpful..
damn my plants were actually having this problem, I've never grown a veggie with separate male and female flowers. this appeared in my recommended at just the right time lmao. I've lost like 10 zucchinis so far
Store bought plant does not make male flowers. Any ideas?
Make sure you wear your leather overalls and high heeled garden wellies to get everyone in the mood.
When a daddy flower and a mommy flower love each other very much…
I am so thankful for videos like this. With RUclips s. I would not have zucchini. Thank s
“Alot of the pollen has just naturally fallen.”
He got bars.
I love watching the bumblebees do this, but I'll keep your method in mind for if i don't see them working it.
Would you please tell a bedtime story one night out in the middle of the garden under the stars? I would really like and appreciate that.
Those flowers are having so much fun!
Wow! Beautifully demonstrated. Thanks!
I have eaten those kind of squash flowers in soup most of the times, it's delicious and unique‼️😋🤤🌺
“A simple tap will actually help them pollinate themselves.”
Yeah, sounds about right.
My daughter teased me this winter when she saw me heading towards my tomatoes with the electric toothbrush. She’d say I hope it’s good for you too and I said it will be when I’m eating the tomatoes!😂🍅🪥
We leave the flower on, and use a teeny, long-handled soft paintbrush to dab the center of male flowers and female flowers!!
Excellent information!
Everything reminds me of him.
😂🤣🤣
My nonna sautes up the squash flowers that shit is like nothing else I swear to you it’s so good
Perfect vs imperfect flowers
Oh goodness, I'm blushing...
Oh i actually knew that you had to do this for some plants, i used to play Gardening Mama a lot
Someone is 100% gonna role-playing as a squash 😂
What did I just watch😳 the poor lady flower🫣
Fun fact: I did an essay on spaghetti squash describing how they, like most squash, are monoecious(having different male and female flowers) for college. It was published by the school and later cited for quite a while on Wikipedia. Recently it was removed. No idea why.
Probably because the woke mentality means male and female is bad.
Ok, that was freaky, dude...
You're too comfortable rubbing the windy on the blinky😮😮😮😂😂😂❤
Now i gotta explain to my bf why I'm watching flower p*rn.... AGAIN
not my proudest fap
We are planting them for years and never had such problems. If we go on vacation the don't even stop growing. It's better if it's cuted on the right size and a few plans are enough because it will make a lot of zucchinis until it's getting colder.
Your garden is 👏 amazing,. It is a wonder to see and enjoy.
This video should be rated R
My dad used to do this back when we had a veggie garden
Fascinating, informative, detailed and educational,
Wonderful video, thanks.!
New sub here.🌹
We learn a lot of this in biology
Wow.. i followed your advice on this an I did this to an acorn squash plant where the fruit kept dying bc of no male flowers were growing .. I used the male flower from my yellow squash and it worked they didn’t shrivel up .. I was so pleased couldn’t believe it.. unfortunately my new puppy went out and picked all the squash that grew from it before they could fully mature 😡 .. 🤷♀️
She sees the little squashes and picks them off ..
I have found that the male and separate female flower trait is found in all cucurbits, I'm not sure if its found in other families, but all cucurbits have it, all squash, pumpkin, cucumbers, melons, and chayotes... I wonder if they evolved prior or after hermaphrodite flowers? super cool... 😊
Thank you I wondered why my courgettes were failing
Great idea! 😊
did you know that here in Mexico we actually eat those flowers into quesadillas? you should try them, they're delicious 😋
I grow squash also, the flowers are the absolute prettiest color 🎉
I rolled over and fell asleep after watching this
That squash be lookin' funny
We purchased honeybee hives so they can do the deed for us! The bees LOVE the squash and melons that have been flowering for a while, and are particularly fond of the sunflowers that are now blooming, too!
So he’s basically giving his plant a hand job
A brush works well too. Those foam ones or a regular cheap one.
I am an adult, I am an adult & I'm mature enough not to giggle at this for 5 mins straight, totally mature enough 👀
This was pretty interesting in all honesty.
❤ well it a must. Notice that there’s next to no butterflies and bees for years
#Windshield test notice the lack of dead bugs on it too
Some pollen got in my eye 🎉

Those flowers make for amazing pancakes!
I learned about Dehiscence, it's the shedding of mature polen for male organ/flower. And it's basically the ejaculation of plants
That plant got so much to remember now
I like to use a small paintbrush to pollinate mine! Works like a charm
“Step-flower what are you doing?”
EXCELLENT!! Thank you ❤
Great video 👍if you have more than two plants will
Usually pollinate fairly easily itself from bees and the wind
For those who have trouble attracting pollinators, try planting native flowers and insects nest for solitary species like carpenter bees which are amazing they were the reason I had cantaloupes
I've found this to be necessary because there are often not enough male flowers open at the same time as the female flowers. That's why I save the male flowers from one day in the frig to pollinate the flowers from the next day.
my dude you had my face turning red!
That flower taste delicious
My honey bees haven't let me down yet 🤗
