- The first salute also called the “Silver Dollar Salute” is one of the most important traditions in a new Marine Officers commissioning ceremony.
The first salute lives on as a tradition to honor the enlisted service member who has had the most impact on the newly commissioned Marine.
He received his first salute from his Dad.

Sgt Major Buck is his name. He was one of my platoon Sgts in 1997.

Lieutenants. I just said hi and no salute.
They stopped my and asked why I didn’t salute them ?
I saluted them while saying

They said, “we issued it to you didn’t we?”
I said yes sir.

I know because i spent 10 years in the Army and while there are things i i am proud i earned such as combat action and my parachutist badge, most of it was give for being here or there at a ceratin time.

I had a kid working for me that was getting his commission in the Army reserves and was asking for advice on getting a silver coin for his first salute. I have a small stash of silver eagles, so I gave him one to use. He was a great employee and I was glad I could do that for him. I told him if there was any reason that I was ever back in uniform (like I could really fit in that thing anymore) it would be my honor to give him a salute.
