Marine Salute to Grandpa

When my Father was buried, my 92 year old Mother was too distraught to take the flag, so, the Honor Guard gave the flag to me, his only child. I could barely breathe holding it in my hands.

When my father was buried I asked the honor guard to give my father's flag to my son. My son treasures it.

I'm sure that your father was so very proud of you. Twenty years after my losing my dad and I still miss him. Our reactions are proof positive of what great dads we both had.Just think of how your dad, like mine, would want us to fondly remembered him but not in anguish. Also, not al tears are shead in despair or sadness.

Hey Sharon, I feel you! Yes. My grandpa got the American Flag folded by the Honor Guard during his funeral. I couldn’t attend it. I was to upset because my ex-boyfriend (Air Force) had passed away (way too soon, way too young.) So the American Flag was given to my grandma, so when she passed I had the liberty of having the heroic flag in my bedroom. Your daddy is an American hero! Like my Grandpa!

This hits home for me. My grandpa who was also a Marine passed away earlier this year due to Covid. He was given this exact send off and when the trumpet started playing I started bawling my eyes out. The flag was given to my dad (who is the oldest son.) The first time I seen him cry. I miss my grandpa.

Honor guard from all branches of service do a very nice job with this. I've played Taps several times for funerals, memorial services, and wakes. The first time I ever played Taps, the soldier had already been buried at Arlington, and this was a memorial service for his home church several months later. He was decorated like you can't believe, and all his decorations were on display - in multiple display cases. His adult son greeted me at the church door, pumping my hand in an endless handshake, delighted I was there to play Taps for his dad. I was quite nervous about it, and stayed out of the sanctuary until it was just about time for me to play, in order to keep myself from getting emotionally involved (hard to play if you are choked up). I played, did a very good job, and afterward the widow invited me to the little reception they had in the church. I accepted because you NEVER refuse the request of a widow, plus it was just a very kind offer and I didn't want to insult her. I thought to ask about the son because he wasn't around but had been so excited to greet me earlier. The widow told me that as soon as I started playing, he fainted in the pew. It is a very powerful moment.

You're beyond a good person. To go out of your way to give the grieving family a beautiful memorial.with your well honed god-given talent is
a beautiful and exceptional gift to the famiy and loved ones. You'e to be lauded for your loving, exceptional display. I didn't have time to watch the entire presentation but as of about 5 - 10 years ago our greatest generstion were psssing away at a rate whereby they didn't have enough trumpet players to simply play Taps live. Again, thank you flr your gift.

@@danielfronc4304 It is still like that. During 2020 there were almost no requests, and since maybe March I've seen about 20 so far. I belong to a group called "Bugles Across America", families can go there and make a request for a bugler, and hopefully in that region there's somebody able to do it. My schedule doesn't always align, but I do enjoy helping out. In fact I'm playing tomorrow, for a soldier who died at age 93 - a purple heart recipient, and I'm pretty sure that's my first purple heart recipient. I've played for POW's held in Gemany and Japan, a WAC, a WAV, WWII, Korea, Vietnam vets, and sadly one active service (motorcycle accident - the entire town came to the cemetery), and have played for all branches including Coast Guard. It has been my incredible honor to play for all of them. It is like a little ministry of its own with the interactions I have with the families. And thank you for your kind words by the way!

I will never get through TAPS without tears, I love it and it reminds me of two important men in my life, my Dad and a Brother, both whom served. One day I guess Taps will be played as I am laid to rest, at that point I will be with my family in heaven! The grandson brings honor to his grandfather with this touch salute!!! A very awesome moment. I teared up. My Dad passed in Sept 1980,Veteran from Pearl Harbor. Mom was of course given a huge flag in which I now proudly display on my living room wall. He was discharged the day before it was attacked. My co worker's Grandfather had the job of recovering the bodies of that dreadful day. My Brother a Vietnam vet came home,but wasnt the same. He had his moments,but bc our Mom is a praying Mom he is fine now.
Please when you see a service man or woman tell them Thank you.

A marine was promoting the lord in his company and his co didn't like it. He called him out and told the marine to drive a jeep to a location and park it. The marine said he couldn't drive the co said by. So the marine got in and parked the jeep. The whole company flipped and yelled out I wanna serve your God. The co opened the hood of the jeep. There was no motor.
