Best advice I can give having passed my test a few months ago and have been using motorways regularly - if you're driving in the left lane, keep an eye out for signs and the stubby divider lines telling you that lane is going to turn into a sliproad off the motorway. I accidentally turned off the motorway a couple of times just because I was keeping left lol.
Passed in January. Been doing Pass Plus and helped me with my confidence. My motorway lesson humbled me but on the way back really enjoyed it! Thanks Francis. Will use this on my next lesson!
Thank you sooooo much for doing these videos! I love your videos, they give off such a positive vibe! They make me feel more confident in driving!! More POV videos please!
Thank you I’m driving for the first time this Saturday, after driving for 10 years😂 I get ripped to bits but I had a motoway lesson with instructor and she told me my car went into reverse on the motoway 😮 but my reverse I had to click the gear stick it worried me so much that I avoided them 😂
A great idea here but there are many times in the video where you should be in the left lane and you continue in the middle. I always feel it's not that people don't know the rules, so much they are not paying full attention. You also could add that joining from a slip you should be looking for a space on the approach and it is your responsibility to join safely and not others to move for you.
Your instructions are very helpful but you are always wrong on distance in icy conditions, it is 10 times the dry conditions so 10 into 2 is 20 seconds.
Love your videos, so much informative! I passed my driving test in December 2023. Used motorway just once. Wanted to know if driving on motorway at around 1-2 AM (less traffic) would be a bit more safer for me to build my confidence?
Great video, as always. I need to get some video editing lessons from you😉 I can't believe you came to Luton and didn't give me a shout 😞 I would've told you about Junction 11 and it's traffic congestion It's all about Junction 10 😉 Francis you are a busy man but when you have a moment lets talk.
Hi Francis, what is your view on passing on left (undertake). I believe by the Highway Code it is not illegal even at 70mph. Most UK drivers say it can only be done in slow moving traffic.
New driver here. Left London to go to Rochester and somehow ended up in a left lane which then became a drop lane and I had to change lanes very last minute. I can’t seem to find videos which explain how to identify that a lane becomes a drop lane or that say, 2 new lanes that join the existing 3 lanes, will not all stay (5 lane carriageway) and some will drop off. I want to avoid having to move lanes so I can always stay in the left lane behind the lorries.
Last week i went on motorway but i noticed that my car was getting slipout from my lift lane its happened twice(i passed my driving test in October . thank you so much
I have trouble on joining dual carriageways, I always seem to panick and tunnel vision. And I never seem to slow down on it I just don’t know what to do
Cars don't drive bumper to bumper on the motorway or dual carriageway, there is generally a gap. If there is slow moving traffic, you'll be stopping anyway. My method is I pick a 'target' car on the road and I judge their speed, now I either get ahead of them or I slow down to slip in behind them. It is pretty dangerous to come to a complete stop on a slip road so try to avoid that, I used to be pretty anxious on slip roads but you'll gain confidence the more you do it.
It's not up to the traffic to give way to you. The onus is on you to merge safely. Most people's problem is that they don't look for a gap until they are running out of slip road, they just assume everything will be fine when they get to the top of the slip road. This is poor planning. Pick a gap as early as possible and start matching your speed and position to that gap.
I just wanted to say thank you for this video i passed my test last september and have to drive to salisbury from norwich on thursday im slightly nervous about using the m25 any pointers for me? I will take anything at this point i have used motorways before to cambridge but never used the m25
It is the responsibility of vehicles on the entrance slip road to merge safely with traffic. Traffic on the carriageway does not have to change lanes or speed to help you, although good drivers will often attempt to create space for you. Do not rely on this. Good defensive driving is about planning your manoeuvre based on the worst case scenario. Pick a safe gap early and match your speed and position to that gap, that way all you have to do is move over in a controlled predictable manner.
I have a question. Let's say you're entering on a slip lane and that lane merges. I.e. it runs out. You've been looking in your mirror for a safe gap to move over, but there isn't one. What do you do? Do you stop at the end of the slip road and treat it as a give way or do you pull out in front of someone at high speed? Neither seems safe to me.
If it is unsafe to merge you use the hard shoulder to merge same as if you are rejoining the motorway after a breakdown, anything else is just dangerous. But for the record, 99.9% of the time there is a gap, people just do a poor job of matching speed to the space either Infront of or behind the vehicles in lane 1.
Thank you so much for this video I’ve watched a lot of your videos in the build up to my test (I passed) I’ve never driven on the motorway before just didn’t have the knowledge of motorways as a driver I’m going to give the motorway a try over the weekend once again thank you
Hi Francis, since using motorways, I have noticed so many potholes, which can be detrimental to your car/tyres, how do you avoid these safely, especially when going at faster speeds. Sometimes, depending on situation/road conditions, may not be safe to avoid? Cheers :) PS: great video by the way!
I’m not sure there is a safe way to avoid a hole in the road at 70mph when you’d only see it when the car in front has passed it. That’s going to be 2-4 seconds of notice to check mirrors, and swerving at high speed is definitely a bad idea. I’d suggest holding the steering wheel tighter, go over the hole and report it to highways agency when you’ve stopped.

LOL
Same here, first time drove on motorway and I thought I was going straight but the left lane converted into a sliproad. This video is useful!
Exactly this! You don’t want to end up in Slough or even worse… Luton!
Love your videos...Passed my License now for close to 3 years but i still love watching these videos
omg amazing!! You must have loads of experience now!
Passed in January. Been doing Pass Plus and helped me with my confidence. My motorway lesson humbled me but on the way back really enjoyed it! Thanks Francis. Will use this on my next lesson!

Took my pops to Heathrow using m4 happy I got over the anxiety of m way. It’s actually such a calm drive
This is a very good video! Thank you so much for breaking things down. Very simple to understand👌

I used to get off the M1 on that junction (in the thumbnail) everyday coming back from work
Brilliant video for learners

What does the (C) next to Luton and Dunstable mean?
Thanks..you are the best one🎉
Not me passing my test and still binging driving content
did not know driving in a red x could catch you a fine. not that i ever drive in a X lane anyway but still surprised me
Loved this video , nice guy and well explained but 60 years old and still terrified.
Can I get help on this please? If I am on the slip way but cars dont give me way, and the slip road is running out, what should I do?

Thank you for the help! I'm going on a motorway for the first time on Wednesday. This is just the video I needed!!!!! :)
Good luck 🤞
Good luck, I'm sure you'll do well. In a lot of ways driving on a motorway is less stressful than city or town driving.
Good luck. I would say have an experience driver next you if you can or try to drive in the night when the motorway will be empty.
passed 1st time with 4 minors now i need to do pass plus any advice ?
11:01 what does Luton (S) and Luton (C) mean?
South and central
Ah that makes so much sense, so they’re giving you directions so you choose the correct location, thank you so much. 🙃
Lorries are limited to 56mph/90kph and coaches are limited to 62mph/100kph

I hate the Motorway! I'm doing a course for existing full Licence holders with a Driving School, and I still hate them!
Your second counting was wrong. Starting at 1 and finish at 3 is not 3secs.
First!
You’re awesome Francis!! Love your videos
Start counting from 0 not 1
✊🏾
Didn’t need to watch: Just came here to comment: thank you for making this. Desperately needed for so many idiots on the UK roads
0:29 No it’s not! It is on a dual carriageway but not on a motorway because they’re longer and sometimes wider.
It quite literally says M1 on the sign

Very helpful videos helped me a lot getting confidence on dual carriageways.
Counting tip, always start at zero... if you use a stop watch, it doesn't start at one second ;)
Thanks Francis. Needed this after passing recently.
Terrible camera angle. Just use the dashcam.
Very informative, thankyou, bit more confidence now for my first time alone 👍🤘
