  • Hello and welcome to my first trip report of 2021. Happy new year to everyone and hopefully it'll be a much better year all round!
    Today we're back in The Netherlands to review the International Intercity service from Amsterdam Centraal to Brussels-Midi/Zuid in Belgium. It's a loco hauled service which is a great alternative between the cities, along the same corridor that Thalys & Eurostar services use. Enjoy the ride!
    Date of Filming: 13/7/20
    Camera: GoPro Hero 7 Black
    Operator: NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen)
    Departure: Amsterdam Centraal, The Netherlands
    Arrival: Brussels, Belgium
    Cost: €24.50 (Second Class)

    Pre-covid these trains were often very crowded especially in rush hour when the line basically serves as a commuter service between Rotterdam, Schiphol and Amsterdam.

    Im an absolute fan of these sets. While I never 'need' to use them (I live in the east of the country) I sometimes just visit the large cities just to ride one of these trains.

    I know this route very well, having worked on it for several years as the operator of a catering trolley, and later as team manager for said operators. I have seen a lot of change in my years. The high speed line opening between Schiphol and Rotterdam, the complete rebuilding of our home base Rotterdam, and the opening of the tunnel underneath Antwerp where the main ones. Later there was the rerouting through Breda instead of Roosendaal.
    I basically learnt to speak French on this train.
    And indeed the Fyra-disaster... It cost me my job in the end :-(

    Thanks a lot for the interior views! I'm currently decorating models of these so seeing all the different stripey patterns and where they are used is very helpful, together with photos.
    I always found the ICR cars a bit odd and quirky especially considering the differently sized doors of "outside swinging" type, this type of doors is more common on trams and buses.
    The rolling stock (locomotive and cars) can only reach 160 km/h but they are planning to replace them by ICNG sets (200 km/h). The cars are around 40 years old but still in good shape thanks to several modernizations (originally they had no air-conditioning, open dump toilets and different seats). The livery, classic blue and yellow, is however the same from the 1970s, the "Fyra" white and pink wasn't popular and didn't hold for long.

    It's over 20 years ago now, but for 18 months I used to commute daily from Amsterdam RAI, near where I was living at the time, to my IT job in Rotterdam and back in the evening - changing onto and off this train at Schiphol Airport.
    This version of the train has been modernised somewhat, but it was always comfortable, clean and very reliable (I can't remember being late very often). A couple of things - there was an excellent trolley service with maybe the best coffee I have ever purchased on a train. And between Den Haag (the Hague) and Schiphol, it was a birdwatcher's paradise (ornithology is one of my hobbies).
    I also did the complete journey to Brussels a few times on leisure trips. Again the reliability of the service was excellent.

    Compared to other services in the Netherlands and Belgium, tickets for these trains are actually rather expensive. For example: Groningen to Antwerpen (second class, full fare) would be € 39,60. Groningen to Maastricht, which is a similar distance, is only € 27,40. Before these trains used the high speed line, the prices were a lot lower and the travel time wasn't that much (if at all) longer in most cases. If you are travelling from/to a station in Belgium that is farther away from the border, it is often cheaper to use a combination of a Belgian domestic ticket and an international ticket. If you travel regularly, the difference in cost can get quite big. (There are disadvantages though: you do need to know the rules and, in case of problems during your trip, it can lead to issues with passenger rights.)

      True, true, the ns lost a lot of money due to fyra and having to lease two expensive traxx locomotives, and the passengers have to pay for their bad choices. Add to that the two detours in Breda and Brussel Zaventem, each adding about 15 minutes, if not more negate the time gained by using the hsl. The train was 5 minutes slower from amsterdam. Mostly due to an increase in stops in Belgium (from 5 to 8). So now we have to pay more for a (sometimes) slower journey.

      I agree Pete. I was fortunate in my younger days to travel when most long distance trains were loco hauled. Growing up in Edinburgh I was lucky enough to travel on the East Coast Main Line from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross a few times where the motive power was a BR Class 55 'Deltic', BR Mk 2D, E or F coaches made for a very comfortable journey, and the bonus...a proper dining carriage with a full breakfast, lunch or dinner table service. Great days, 100mph (160kmh) running and that 'Deltic' sound - a 36 cylinder symphony!

    Actual scheduled speed is 120-130 km/h. In the more soggy parts of NL 140 or higher is not possible without special track preparation. On lots of parts the speed is even 100km/h or less, e.g. the now sunken track near Amelo is 100km/h. Outside stations it is like the UK. lots of old disused junctions that brings speed down to 40km/h. Some commuter trains have a regulated top speed of 130 km/h. I helped creating an experimental train simulator for NS in ~ 2005.

      Since 1995, the train has increased in speed, and stopped calling at Den Haag HS, and Roosendaal (crossing the border near Breda instead). It also got quite some extra stops, and a direction reversal (at Breda), causing it to lose most of it's speed gain.
      The Dutch railway system is overloaded with trains, causing fast trains to have to run quite slow. The Belgians add to this by using this train as their regional intercity train, stopping at quite some needless stops on the way. Have taken this train From Amsterdam to Antwerpen this summer. Good experience, overall a great value! In a few years the NS will operate this journey with their new ICNG trains. @@walterclements7968 It's sad that the Fyra flopped, instead of choosing between Alstom or Siemens. But one of the reasons that the Netherlands didn't want Alstom, was because it's of France. The irony is that the ICNG also is from Alstom.
      I'm curious if the new M7 of Belgium is going to ride in the Netherlands too, potentially until Roosendaal. They are also capable of 200km/h, have everywhere outlets, high capacity and very soft while riding.

      @@denjo3131 yeah it's a shame the whole thing flopped so hard. Although the terrible trains were poorly made by AnsaldoBreda, the NS failed miserably too. Kinda sad since the new ICNG is 50km/h slower. Just a fast intercity, not a real high speed train. Those M7 trains do look good, hopefully they will go to Roosendaal as well. And let's hope both train will start operating this year.

    • @nanderv
      @nanderv 3 года назад +1

      @@denjo3131 No, it has nothing to do with France, the Netherlands has been ordering a lot of French trains over the years. The problem is that the NS wanted a rather specific train:
      >Speed limit:250 km/h (no bonus for faster)
      > Unique design
      > Order of merely 17 trainsets.
      This combination meant that Alstom simply didn't offer a bid. They were willing to do something if any of the three demands wasn't part of the list, but with all three it was impossible to deliver. AnsaldoBreda was willing to try for a lower price (because they are inexperienced in building high speed trains, so they just were like: might as well try)...
      An order this large has to be done using a public tender, where companies can write their bid,and then they have to choose a bid based on the way they pre-defined how to select the winner. In this case, the winner was chosen by price.

    • @blauw67
      @blauw67 3 года назад +2

      @@nanderv If I recall correctly, NS didn't even have a choice since AnsaldoBreda was the only company with a bid for the exact specifications layed out.
      Another interesting detail, two half V250's where inspected and graded on some scale which I don't know the name of right now, but points where given for each defect, 5 points for comfort defects, 10 points for reliability issues and 20 points for safety defects. Each EMU was allowed up to 10 points (for an entire EMU) and if it got over 10 points the train would be deemed unsafe. The worst of the two half EMU's got 2019 points and the other half got 1157 points.

    If you're going back to do Rotterdam, covid permitting, you should also go to Antwerpen Centraal to have a look, it's an awesome station!
    Was hoping to do Eurostar/ICE from London to Cologne last year but, again, the pandemic had other ideas.
    Also those ETR 700 trains are possibly the ugliest ever created. Amtrak have a similar "front of car" looking design on their new Avelia Liberty trains - this trend needs to be stopped!

    Thanks for this trip but why did you altogether skip the fact that this IC train also calls at Brussels Airport station? You mentioned only Schiphol station but it's precisely an interesting fact that this service connects the airports of both capitals: a great incentive to bring air travellers to their plane by train rather than by car (especially when you know how many Dutch people fly from BRU and how many Belgians fly from AMS). It's a great move in terms of intermodality and was definitely worth mentioning.

    Just a nice fact to look forward to: in a couple of years time our country will have new trains commuting on that line. To be more exact: the Alstom Coradia Stream which can go 200km/h eventually. Read more about it here: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercity_Nieuwe_Generatie (translate it directly)
    As a fellow Dutch citizen I'm really proud of our rail network and the yearly schedule. The punctuality is really great as well, most trains come very frequently and on time most of the times. The landscape could be more interesting though, since it's quite flat. That's the only thing I'm jealous of compared to other countries.

    Honestly i do find the lack of power sockets quite strange. I did find that dutch trains run on 1.5 kv. This is relatively low. Swiss and german trains run on 15 kv for example. The low voltage is due to the dutch railways switching to electric trains relatively early. (1920’s). There are working on changing to 3kv, as this would reduce power losses.

    • @kaelon9170
      @kaelon9170 2 года назад

      I realise i'm a bit late to answer this, but while it's true that the Dutch domestic network is electrified with 1500 volt DC power, these Intercity Direct trains run on the high-speed Schiphol Airport - Antwerp line which is electrified with 25kv AC. these trains switch between 1500 volts DC in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Breda and 25Kv AC on the high-speed line.
      1500 volts DC is also not the reason that these trains don't have power sockets. Recent domestic Dutch rolling stock has power outlets. The real reason that those trains don't have any power sockets is because the carriages used for the Intercity Direct services come from the 1980s, when power sockets weren't relevant yet.
      They also haven't been retrofitted with power sockets because these trains are due to be replaced by new Alstom Coradia Stream rolling stock (named ICNG on the Dutch network) next year. Those ICNG trains will be capable of 200km/h and have power sockets in both first and second class.

    Most of all thank you for not pretending to be a TV presenter. I get really irritated by travel vloggers that spend more time filling the picture with their faces than focussing on the travel experience - particularly when the worst offenders (PL) are blessed with less than decent facial aesthetics and vocal content that manages to come across as patronising in tone but often ignorant in content.

      These trains are 40 years old, they're not sufficiently powered to have power sockets throughout the train because 40 years ago they didn't deem that necessary. Their maximum speed is also only 160 km/h even though the locs and the railway line are capable of higher speeds, but 40 years ago there weren't any high speed railways in the Netherlands. They're also the only Intercity trains still in service that don't offer WiFi. As others have already written, these trains are basically only operating on this line as an "emergency" solution because the earlier ordered AnsaldoBreda V250 trains had major issues, forcing NS to place a new order for new trains, which will enter service this year. In total these trains have operated the Intercity Direct service to Brussels less than ten years.
      And the new ICNG-trains have power sockets in 2nd class too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NS_Intercity_Nieuwe_Generatie

      @@puikepuck I fully understand that indeed these trains were put in as an emergency after the Fyra scandal. But it’s not too complicated to retrofit some power sockets.
      SNCF has done this with its fleet of Corail carriages. And those are also 40 years old.
      Wifi is less important, but having taken these trains with very little battery left, a power socket shouldn’t be too much to ask for.

      @@yannickkeall8020 You don't "just" add some power outlets near every seat. The whole electrical installation in those trains would have to be redesigned to provide enough power for all those outlets. For trains that weren't meant to be in service for very long, this was apparently found too costly, and honestly I understand that. The 1st class seats have power, it happened to me more than once that if I showed my empty phone battery to the conductor of that train, (s)he would let me use 1st class for an hour or so to charge my phone.

      Thalys is a terrible rip-off scheme. If you want fair prices, you have to book weeks, if not months, ahead and then you have to set the very train you want to travel on, with no possibility to change (unless you want to pay an arm and a leg for a flexible ticket). And, even so, they have very limited quotas for this kind of fair-princed tickets. For short Thalys is a rip-off scheme. As they run only 4 or 5 pairs of trains a day between Brussels-Antwerp-Amsterdam, it's way better to take this regular IC, which offers one train an hour: you have much more choice and flexibility.
