Jeff yesterday I got stung by 27 Yellowjackets and was rushed to hospital. Now have a Eli pen to help. Wanted to start doing bees next year by doing hivebixes to get ready . But now an just a little scared.
Those are 2 different kinds of venom, and you may not be allergic to bees. I'm a novice beekeeper and allergic to bees (found out after a few stings - I wasn't being careful enough), but I'm not allergic to yellowjackets. Get an allergy test to find out, and just take your precautions. Get a good suit that the bees can't sting through, some good leather gloves and boots/shoes that cover your ankles. If you live in a place where wearing boots is just too hot, you can add a couple of buttons to the bottoms of each pant leg of your suit and button some elastics down under your feet so that your suit goes over the edge of your shoes. Letting bees sting the crap out of you is not smart, since allergies can be developed over time - be smart and be safe :-)
Michael I am on a wait list now to be tested to see how or what vemon I had the reaction from . I have a full length suit and Vail head covering but I think I am a little gunshy because of this recent issue. I am going to start to wear my bee suit while I retrieve the items I was going for at the house. I guess I was maybe in wrong place at wrong time.lol
@@davidkirkman2223 I hear you!...I've been working minimally with my bees since my reactions worsened, but speaking with my allergist has put my mind somewhat at ease. LOL...you are always in the wrong place at the wrong time, if you are at the end of a yellowjackets pointy end ;-) I don't know what kind of suit you have, or what kind are available where you live...but if you have a more serious reaction to bee stings (even locally), you will want to look into the suits that bees cannot penetrate with their stings. The standard cotton or cotton/poly blend just don't cut it. More often than not, the kind you want is also more breathable, and thus far more comfortable either in hot weather, or when you need to have more layers underneath and sweat can dissipate. My season is just about over where I live in Denmark, but I plan to have one of those suits when the new season starts
Great video as always. Love the scenery of New Orleans. Delighted those bees were saved. Would have been a terrible loss if they were killed. We need bees!! So kudos to Chep for stepping in. Howards' story is amazing..! To be allergic and still wrangle and look after bees... Mr Ed, I look forward to seeing your next video. Keep up the amazing work - in your stride... best wishes as always, from Co. Dublin, Ireland xxx :-)
VERY GOOD STUFF. Props to you Jeff for your assistance there. I'm sure they were much more confident and relaxed by your presence and graceful demeanor. Congratulations to both the new bee keeper and the gentleman who has worked through his allergies to remain a bee keeper. Thanks for sharing.

I'm allergic to bees now too. Never was before in my whole life until I started keeping bees and I still keep bees. I did try to do a removal that went sideways this past year and got excessively stung (around 15 stings and mostly to the head and neck) but I didn't go into anaphylaxis but did break out into hives and almost went to the hospital. A high dose of Benadryl got me back to normal thankfully. I'll always keep bees but now I just have to be more careful and take my time and make sure to use smoke to keep everything calm. Keep doing what you're doing Mr. Ed, we newbies appreciate it!
@@khills yes ma'am that's the goal. Only they are extremely expensive without insurance and I'm hoping to change that soon. For now I just take my time, haven't been stung in months because I know my own bees pretty well and am around them daily so they have my smell pretty well down.
@@subsy83 I feel ya on the insurance, mate. Definitely ask if there are generics - they cost about $900 less than the epipens did when my insurance decided to be surly about the cost. And there's a GoodRx article on EpiPens, generics, and alternatives that include coupon codes to help knock the price down even further. (I have gone into anaphylaxis and wouldn't wish that on anyone else, so I can be pretty fervent in the whole GET YOU AN EPIPEN TO LOVE thing. 😉 ) But as I was commenting to Jeff elsewhere, hopefully the stings lessen your overall risk of arthritis, at least? I mean, if you have to suffer with the allergy, you might as well get some benefit?
Beautiful old homes and area!!! That new bee suit won't be pretty for long!!! Old knob and tube wiring in that old house. He did it like a pro. Must have been watching your videos. I used to be allergic to bees but now they don't seem to swell me anymore but like Howard I keep the Benadryl and my epi pen too handy. That is some really nice brood comb to frame up. Will Howard do a follow up video on how the bees are doing after the relocate? Mr. Ed keep the incredible videos coming!!!!!!

Another great video. You know, after watching your short driving tour I believe the flat-earthers would be happy to live in New Orleans. It appeared that if you placed a marble on the road it wouldn't roll anywhere. Thank you once again.
In New Orleans and most of the land mass in southern Louisiana, EVERYTHING is flat. In fact, if there is a mound of earth over 1 foot tall, it's considered a mountain. It's one of the reasons drivers down here freak out when they go over a bridge, they are just not accustomed to seeing something so tall. God's peace Marty. Mr. Ed
Thank you very much. Everything at the abbey and the area around us is fine, Hurricane Laura was over 100 miles west of us. When I was a kid my dad took my brothers and I to a place that I can't remember were, but they had a glass beehive in there store. It had alot of bee's. They were able to get out to do bee stuff, and a place in the bottom of the hive so they could get some of the honey right there in the store. It was so interesting because a person could see the bee's working inside the glass. It was a huge hive. If I remember clearly it was clear to the ceiling. Maybe 3 ft. wide/thick. Have you ever thought about creating one in the store. It would be very interesting for others to be able to see it from behind the glass. It was glass on every part. And could be seen from 4 directions. If I'm wrong about the size it would be because I was 9 or 10 years old, and everything looks enormous at that age. I'm l52 right know so it was along time ago.
That is a great story! We have a hardware store that has a viewable bee hive right in the store, it is a very popular spot. Thanks for watching and sharing. God's peace Sheri. Mr. Ed
Jeff Horchoff Bees, I prefer Shrimp and Crab also!!! If I eat a crawfish it’s going to be the tail only! No way will I suck out everything out of a crawfish shell. I know exactly what the saltwater does that they are washed in before they are boiled. I spent a little time in Butte La Rose in my younger years enjoyed a lot of crawfish boils and they thought that I was wasteful because I only ate the meat out of the tail.
A couple weeks ago I ran across a guy with a shirt that said 'Save the Bees', and I thought of this channel. Just as a warning, if you ever see old tube and post wiring that still has wires on them check to make sure the wires aren't live. (This type wiring used white ceramic standoffs like you see about 9:30 in.) I was doing network wiring in a building that had been "renovated" several times in the past and encountered some live wires. The Accounting firm that worked in the building had always assumed the wires were dead.
We call this "knob and tube" wiring. When I was an electrician working in old houses, nothing hurt worse than getting your fingers between a load being drawn on a neutral. A shock to ground is one thing, but lighting a light bulb or powering a refrigerator through your body is pain.
@@TechGorilla1987 Thanks for the correction. For some reason I couldn't remember "Knob and Tube." Having been nailed a couple of times myself over the years, I know exactly what you mean. "What doesn't kill you sometimes just hurts like hell."
@@monkeyboy4746 They fixed it! They turned out to be a pretty good group of people to work with. I think the guy I pointed it out to was a senior partner so that probably helped.

A life long allergy to stings kept me away from bee keeping. BTW, my allergist also said that MSG has the same physical reaction as stings. I've been in the emergency room many times over my 73 years. I love bee keeping, just too risky. Keep it up Jeff. You do good work. Regards, Solomon
It's nice to sit back and run the video and be an advisor for a change. Enjoyed the New Orleans drive around. Such a pretty city with lots of rich history. Nice one handed queen catcher - awesome sauce! lol Good information on the allergies. Although you can’t use the wet comb, can you still sit it out for them to rob it back instead of crush straining. Or you crush strain to keep the honey
The comb is crushed and strained to retrieve the honey which will then be fed back to the bees through a feeder jar. That way, the bees can use the honey without fear of the hive beetles over running the hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace Bradley. Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed!!! Happy Friday my friend. Can't wait to set aside some time this afternoon to view this much anticipated video. In the meantime, you and your subscribers stay well and protected.
Another Friday night with Mr. Ed! Jeff, it’s great of you to share your expertise with a new beek! We lack mentors where I am, so I had to learn what I know by trial and error - mostly error and luck. Even now I wish I had a more experienced beek I could call and talk over the new challenges I face. Until this year I did nit have enough experience to feel I could provide newer beekeepers with much useful guidance. I still have a lot to learn (I think we all always have a lot to learn), but finally feel I have the experience to work with newer beekeepers. I have made a couple of tries at starting a bee club that never turned into anything. This winter I plan to start a website with the same basic idea as Mike Barry had for his channel, just showing my year in the apiary. I also plan to start a moderated online forum. Maybe I can build a local community around that. Louisiana is a place I have long wanted to visit. What is the best time of the year for someone who can take the heat but not the humidity to plan a visit? Thanks for all you do, stay safe and be well. Stu (I can’t believe I let a Friday go by without a jab at the Dirt Rooster. I’ll make up for it next week.)
Perseverance is the virtue needed when trying to accomplish most goals, aided with prayer of course. Don't give up on your idea of starting a club or website, as you know, the world needs as many bee keepers as it can get, and having good, ready information for beginners is essential. If you are looking for a good month to visit Louisiana, October is the one I'd choose. God's peace Stu. Mr. Ed

Hey,
Good to see ya again, this 1 looks like fun!!
Jeff has the purest heart. Stay blessed ❤️
I agree....
Eyyyy Mr Jeff. Its incredible, is so big, good job. God bless you.
Thanks so much for your blessing and for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
You can tell they are a brilliant bee keepers when they can find a queen in 50K Bee hive
It's always a good thing when I find the queen. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Hello mr Ed, I love your smile
Thank you so much Mike and thanks for taking the time to watch the video. Also, I hope you will check out more of my over 500 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video almost every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
See if you can keep an epipen set on you, too - it could save your life.
But as I was commenting to Jeff elsewhere, hopefully the stings lessen your overall risk of arthritis, at least? I mean, if you have to suffer with the allergy, you might as well get some benefit?
Stay safe Ray, the world needs as many bee keepers as it can get. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Chep is the one who went home with all the bees and honey, Howard and I were there only to lend help. Still, for a first time wrangle, he did a great job. Thanks for watching. God's peace Rodney.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Sorry Chep for giving the credit to someone else. I'm terrible with names.

Thanks Mary, and keep on watching. God's peace.

Another awesome video and bee capture!
Great video Mr. Ed God Bless
Baton down the hatches Jeff! That hurricane is coming straight for you and the bees, Stay safe! God bless you and your bees!
I'm saying my prayers right now. Thank you for your blessing and for watching. God's peace Casey.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed

Great job Chep! Welcome to the Rookie Wranglers club! :) -Lauren
Hey Lauren, when you have some bees to wrangle, get in touch and we can shoot a video on the removal. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Bee-hah. Love the hat. Nice removal especially for a first timer. I know he appreciated the help. Interesting video. God bless.
Hope the weather misses you and your hives. Take care and God Bless you and yours.
Stay safe, my friend. Sending prayers as Laura storms toward the gulf coast.
Thank you very much. Everything at the abbey and the area around us is fine, Hurricane Laura was over 100 miles west of us. It was the strongest hurricane to hit Louisiana's coast in over a hundred years, about 150 mph winds. It will be weeks before many have power restored. Please keep all these folks in your prayers. Thanks for your concern. God's peace Dovie.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I'm glad you're safe. As I was watching the news, I was fairly certain that Laura was west of you.
We're dealing with wildfires in CA. The sky has been so smokey. I am missing my hikes.
Take care, Mr. Ed.
Dovie
Jeff and friends, please be safe with all the weather coming your way
Thank you Sandra, we will be fine, it's the unfortunate folks west of us who will feel the effects of Laura. Please pray for them. God's peace.

Another great vedio by our friend Mr Ed. I hope that these guys learned from doing the removal. as usual God bless you and all ;of the students. We still have a few bees left here in Alaska budt they will dbe gone in a couple of weeks
Thanks so much for your usual blessing and for watching Richard. I'm sorry to hear that soon enough, I'm assuming it's due to winter's approach. Until the next one, God's pece brother.
Mr. Ed

I love them myself. It was so kind of ay and Holly to send them to me. God's peace Mary Kay.
Mr. Ed
Yes, that really was sweet of Holly. We need more kind people in this world. ❤️🙏🏻💯
New Orleans such a historic town to do a bee removal. Do the bees in New Orleans eat crawfish?
Most bees prefer shrimp and crabs. God's pece Don.
Mr.
Great video 👍
That shirt and hat are perfect for you. 🤣🥰
A couple weeks ago I ran across a guy with a shirt that said 'Save the Bees', and I thought of this channel. It took a bit, and I kept trying to remember the channel name so I could tell it to him, and it turned out after looking it up I had remembered the name but thought I hadn't! I am chuckling too. Mr Ed.
Just as a warning, if you ever see old tube and post wiring that still has wires on them check to make sure the wires aren't live. (This type wiring used white ceramic standoffs like you see about 9:30 in.)
I was doing network wiring in a building that had been "renovated" several times in the past and encountered some live wires.
Did the accounting firm fix the wiring or just leave it as is? I think I know the answer.
@@monkeyboy4746 They fixed it! They turned out to be a pretty good group of people to work with. I think the guy I pointed it out to was a senior partner so that probably helped.
Fortunately, we knew for a fact that the knob and tube was dead, it had been replaced years prior with Romex and circuit breakers. Thanks for your concern and for watching. God's peace.

Thanks for the video. Take care Mr. Ed.
I was trying to get the feel of how the Rooster does a cut out, and you know what, I like it. New Orleans certainly has diversity, and history.
Mr. Ed
Jeff thanks
Mr.
Mr. Ed
