Whether you're a culinary maestro or a newcomer to the cooking scene, the Gyuto (牛刀) is a knife that should be part of your kitchen arsenal. Journey with us as we explore not only the practical uses of the Gyuto but its cultural significance and the historical periods that shaped its development.
From the isolationist period of Sakoku (鎖国) when Japan remained closed off from the world, to the Meiji era, when the country started embracing western influences - each era played a vital role in the birth of the Gyuto. A testament to the art of bladesmithing, it's a knife that combines the design of French-style chef's knife with the unparalleled quality of Japanese steel.
The Gyuto, which translates to "cow sword," became a symbol of Japan's shift towards a meat-inclusive diet influenced by the West. The knife's popularity soared during Japan's industrial boom and began to replace traditional knives in homes across the country.
This video not only acquaints you with the Gyuto but also offers insights into how to use it effectively. It’s a knife designed for push-cuts, rocking, and chopping. Its slightly curved blade and pointed tip make just about any knife work possible.
Is the Gyuto right for you? If you're seeking a knife that offers Japanese steel's superior sharpness and edge retention with a familiar Western style, the Gyuto is your perfect match. It's a tool for nearly all tasks - meat, fish, and vegetables, making it a great first choice if you're starting to build your collection.
Experience the centuries-old craftsmanship that goes into the making of a Gyuto. But be warned - once you've tried a handmade Japanese knife, there's no going back! 🇯🇵🔪

Can a Gyuto blade be used by both right-handed and left-handed people?

Since "Gyuto" is a general term for a type of knife, it depends on the maker and how they handle it.
Since our Gyuto are all handmade we can make them for right-handed or left-handed.
Simply select "left-handed" when ordering online, and we will make it to be a left-handed knife.
