Im not expert in all things military, but I think had this happened now, the UK would have been able to do this with a lot less men and hardware. A few surgical strikes on strategic locations and some discreet SAS raids, the islands would have been retaken in 48 hours, max.
I think the Brits did it as a show of power, plus it's always hard to take over an island(history supports this). Watch some videos and you will see that argens were heavily armed and has huge numbers superiority, plus they had numerical advantage in no.of aircrafts and they happen to sank a lot of royal Navy vessels

Probably quite wrong actually. Britain does not possess enough surface ships anymore. There were a lot of STUFT ships. ( Ships Taken Up From Trade. The RAF are/were next to useless at this kind of range. And the SAS performance in the conflict back in 1982 left a lot to be desired. Very mixed results from those guys.

All ships sailing in anger or training carries a complement of her usual weapons because at any moment they could be diverted into a situation where nuclear ordnance is authorised against a country other than the argies. You don't just in many cases 'choose a loadout' for a ship of war lol

Over the summer it performed maintenance on its turbines, which had been running at full since the start of April. No damage occured to HMS Invincible, nor HMS Hermes

Navy is not just about ships however you are also forgiving that a minor embarcation shot down a harrier a number of skirmishes were some ships played support duties
