    Belgrano's sinking was only controversial amongst folk of a certain type. Her captain himself said he'd have done the same. That she was outside the exclusion zone didn't mean anything. The UK was at war with Argentina, she was an enemy war vessel and therefore could expect what she got. Certainly a tragedy, but it was a war.

    • @xxnightdriverxx9576
      @xxnightdriverxx9576 4 месяца назад +44

      The exclusion zone existed so the British would not accidentally fire on other ships from other nations passing by. It was basically a "everything inside this zone will be sunk" type of thing.
      It was never specified by the British government that Argentinian ships would only be sunk in the exclusion zone. It was never intended to be that way either. But some people apparently think that way lol.

    • @lincolnduke
      @lincolnduke 3 месяца назад +18

      The captain also admitted a few years ago that he was ordered and travelling on a course to reengage the British, and agreed it was a fully legitmate target.

      @@xxnightdriverxx9576 Exactly the ROE was any vessel irrespective of nationality inside the exclusion zone can expect to be attacked without further warning by British forces. • @Only1199
      @Only1199 3 месяца назад

      @@xxnightdriverxx9576 It's because any ship entering the exclusion zone that wasn't british would be viewed as trying to resupply the argentinians, the argies weren't safe anywhere, they'd be attack anywhere, again people need to realize the exclusion zone was never intended for the argentinians, it was intended to keep civilian vessels and foreign countries vessels safe and away from the fighting or they'd run the risk of being attacked, if an argentinian vessel sailed towards the uk and entered uk homeland waters, that vessel would be attacked aswell, the argentinians even tried to attack gibraltar during their failed Operation Algeciras.
      The argentine navy was never safe apart from if they were staying in another countries port but even then they'd have been told to leave anyway.

    My father was a conscript, sent to fight for Argentina in the Falklands War. The stories he's told me, from the Argentinian perspective, are legitimately bone chilling.
    From the fact that a bunch of severely undertrained young adults were forcibly being sent to fight an organized opponent, to the number of broken weapons many were being giving, to the INTENTIONAL drugging of foods being provided to them in order to calm the fear many experienced as they feared for the worst knowing all the odds stacked against them. And all because a deeply corrupt government wanted to curry support from it's citizens.
    I wasn't born until long after the war, but I still don't get how many Argentineans still care so much for the island, young and old. I can maybe get why people at the time felt so strongly for them (given all the propaganda being spread), but in this day in age, with all the info out there, I don't get it. Even my dad, who admittedly is still very bitter about the war, states that most of his anger now lies more with the Argentine government then it does with the British.

They were I believe transported to the ascension islands and then flew to the Falklands, being refueled by Handley Paige Victor Carrier/Bombers - which also had to be refueled in the air in an incredibly complex operation. It's called Operation Black Buck, and it's a really interesting story of Thatcher's desire to keep the island, and of the ingenuity of the RAF engineers and pilots to make it happen.

As someone who didn't live through it, didn't have to make any of the decisions etc I like that it happened, makes for interesting history to learn about, but I think had I been part of the Navy I'd have been very unimpressed.

    I love this channel and I'm happy to see my original home getting a mention, I grew up in Stanley and moved to the UK but still have friends and family there - my Mum was in Stanley during the war and her house even got caught up in a crossfire during the Marines' last line of defence. The good news is that the minefields left over from the conflict have now all been cleared (which I still find strange as I got so used to them being there, lol!), the bad news is that it's still cold, wet and miserable... @Норма́ндия - Не́ман Unlikely. The UK had Argentina under embargo and the Royal Navy would not have hesitated in turning away French ships, or other nationalities being used as a proxy. By the time the any more missiles could be delivered, the UK already had its feet on the ground and it would not matter how many ships we lost. Wilful disregard for this embargo by the French would have seriously harmed their NATO status.
      This is hypothetical anyway since the UK bought the entire world's supply of Exocets to deny them to Argentina.

    Weird how the Falklands sometimes are related to as a „colony“. When the Europeans arrived there, nobody lived there, therefore there was nobody to be colonized. Colonization is when a foreign power comes to a land inhabitated by a different people forming its own nations or otherwise just living there on their own. Decolonization is the process of freeing those native inhabitants from their foreign occupying nation and granting them their independence. Who‘s to be freed on the Falklands? The seals and seagulls? The Falklands are a regular part of Britain claimed by another country, they‘re no colony. A mere dispute over possession of some naturally uninhabited land doesn’t make this land a colony.
