      Honest question, do you all know the three people who voted to become a part of Argentina? I'm not wondering if there is any sort of animosity towards them, just more if they have any nicknames like "Oh hey look, there goes Argentine Mick" or whatever?

      @nervesconcord There is an Argentine lady living on the island (and she has been for 20 odd years). I don't know her, but my mum does, and she's certain the lady voted British. Poor girl has only recently been accepted by the natives. She must have the patience of a saint 😄

      @beckyloveridge1086 I'll be honest w u,I think then islands are rightfully Argentinian and just a sad attempt from an imperialistic falling empire to assert its dominance. If there weren't British living there I think it should peacefully swap owners but since there is people living there a war isn't worth it . I know that the UK doesn't really care about you but the oil also

    • @beckyloveridge1086
      @beckyloveridge1086 Год назад +60

      @sasori9624 Oil certainly is a big factor (for both sides). Personally, i''m more grieved that the French didn't try harder to claim the island way back when, but hey, i might not exist if that was the case! And as much as i'm sure they'd love to, I doubt Argentina will ever get the Islands peacefully, as the Falklanders will never leave.

      @Норма́ндия - Не́ман Unlikely. The UK had Argentina under embargo and the Royal Navy would not have hesitated in turning away French ships, or other nationalities being used as a proxy. By the time the any more missiles could be delivered, the UK already had its feet on the ground and it would not matter how many ships we lost. Wilful disregard for this embargo by the French would have seriously harmed their NATO status.
      This is hypothetical anyway since the UK bought the entire world's supply of Exocets to deny them to Argentina.

    My father was a conscript, sent to fight for Argentina in the Falklands War. The stories he's told me, from the Argentinian perspective, are legitimately bone chilling.
    From the fact that a bunch of severely undertrained young adults were forcibly being sent to fight an organized opponent, to the number of broken weapons many were being giving, to the INTENTIONAL drugging of foods being provided to them in order to calm the fear many experienced as they feared for the worst knowing all the odds stacked against them. And all because a deeply corrupt government wanted to curry support from it's citizens.
    I wasn't born until long after the war, but I still don't get how many Argentineans still care so much for the island, young and old. I can maybe get why people at the time felt so strongly for them (given all the propaganda being spread), but in this day in age, with all the info out there, I don't get it. Even my dad, who admittedly is still very bitter about the war, states that most of his anger now lies more with the Argentine government then it does with the British.

    Honestly, as an Argentinian, we had it coming. Many young, untrained boys were sent to fight. They weren't treated very nicely to say the least. We also should address the political climate in Argentina at the time. People who opposed the government were killed or "disappeared". This war was a distraction from what was going on. The effects of this dictatorship are still felt to this day and people are still looking for their lost family members. We have human rights organizations like "Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (Grandmas of Plaza de Mayo)" and "Madres de Plaza de Mayo (Mothers of Plaza de Mayo)" which are dedicated to look for lost children who have been given to other families. Our history is, as I like to describe it, a rollercoaster.

      @Brisca Legends That's true, you are entitled to have your own opinion. But please remember that the government and the people are two separate things. Don't discriminate or see Argentinians in a bad light because of what the government decided to do, specially considering the people in power at that time were dictators. The people protested, but were silenced; young boys were sent to war where they didn't even have enough food to function properly; and many people lost their dear family members -and this is much more common than you might think, a close friend of mine is still looking for her aunt-. It's a sad part of our history, and many people blame the British and turn a blind eye towards the government, because that's what we're taught in schools.

      One thing you have not mentioned is the French discovered the islands one year before the English did, an Island which was then bought and administered under the rule of the Spanish Empire, after the war of independence the argentinians relocated themselves to a land which was part of Spain and THEN the British invaded the Islands "legitimately" claiming a land they did not dicover nor were the first ones to occupy, Argentina also never gave up their claim to the islands.
      Winning a war against a nation doesn't make it seem more legitimate and although it's fair 99% of residents are British it just makes more sense and would be historically more accurate if the Falkland Islands were part of Argentina

  • @sortasofi254
    @sortasofi254 6 лет назад +503

    Also most of the men fighting for Malvinas were barely 18 years old, had no training whatsoever and some didn't even know how to carry a gun. Some weren't even given guns. They were sent there knowing they wouldn't come back, that they had no way of winning, food, or even water. One of the argentinian soldiers spoke in my school one day and told us about when he was captured. He said that the british were expecting highly trained soldiers and pilots, but when they saw they were young, starving boys, they all felt bad, and even gave them food and comfort. He said that he hadn't had water or food in days, and tried to drink water from a puddle on the floor. One of the british soldiers ran to him and gave him water from his own flask. I feel like we often forget this wasn't Argentina vs. Britain, it was politicians versus politicians making the soldiers and civilians pay.

    • @sortasofi254
      @sortasofi254 6 лет назад +75

      Yes, but normally there's a sense of "we're theatened, let's defend ourselves" involved, in this case, according to what i know, no one on either side wanted this war to happen, and even politicians didn't care for the islands, they just wanted to gain popularity. So I guess what I'm saying is that it was more extreme in this case, but yes, that's sadly what always happens

    • @SonicSweden1
      @SonicSweden1 6 лет назад +45

      Sofi Mendez Well it was more like the Argentinas were suffering, and not the Brittish. I mean the brits were just defending there own islands and had supplies. The Argentinains on the other hand, as you said, didn't have supplies. So I feel like it was MOSTLY the Argetinas who were suffering from the dictatorship.

    • @nattm9376
      @nattm9376 6 лет назад +6

      Let me then ask, what is the point of actually sending them there if they know they can't win? If you think that it was just to pretend to or try to put up a bit of a fight, then maybe it shows Argentina sacrifices its people for the good of the rest. In war you fight to win, not send other people to fight to defend your honour.
      Yes you may say it was just British politicians sending soldiers to do the same, but at least they were properly trained, ready to fight to win a war, not just to be sacrificed in order for their country to uphold its honour.

    I lived in Argentina from 1982 till 1984. I'm American. Argentines had strong feelings (hatred) for the British and Americans at the time. I met a young man my age who was conscripted for the Malvinas (Falklands) war. His strongest criticism was for the Argentine military who put them in those conditions with light cotton clothing, no way to stay warm and dry on a wet cold island. Not to mention not enough food. Then he was sent to fight against highly trained Royal Marines with night vision equipment and air support. He said the best meal he ever had while on the island was given to him as a POW by his British captors. That is a pretty low bar if you've ever eaten British food! He was so bitter and so thoroughly humiliated by the experience.

    Oversimplified: Oil was just found near the islands-
    Falklanders: Why Do I hear USA National Anthem?

    You've also got to consider the Pope declaring something Spain's would have meant nothing at all to the British, who were Protestant.

      “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
      We all deserve to go to hell because we have sinned. But God loved us and gave us His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross in our place to pay the punishment of all of our sins for us when he died on the cross. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and yet God the Son also. God the Father (God)has raised Jesus his son from the dead. JESUS IS COMING AGAIN!!!! Repent of your sins, and believe in who Jesus is and what He did for you and that God the Father has raised Him from the dead and you WILL BE SAVED FROM THE LAKE OF FIRE(hell).
      Sinner’s prayer
      Lord, I know I’m a sinner, I believe that you died on the cross in my place of burning in hell forever so I wouldn’t have to go to hell. I accept your sacrifice for me. Please save me from the lake of fire and forgive my sins. Thank you for the gift of eternal life! Amen.
      We are saved by grace through faith!
      After accepting Jesus the Holy Spirit will come indwell you, and help guide you in your Christian life!:)
      Now turn from your old, sinful ways towards Jesus Christ and surrender your life to Him! Read the Bible(particularly New Testament to start)for more instructions!
      If you have any questions please ask me!
      God bless you!😊

    Another interesting story from this conflict is the one of the UK's forward air attacks by RAF Avro Vulcan Bombers. They were I believe transported to the ascension islands and then flew to the Falklands, being refueled by Handley Paige Victor Carrier/Bombers - which also had to be refueled in the air in an incredibly complex operation. It's called Operation Black Buck, and it's a really interesting story of Thatcher's desire to keep the island, and of the ingenuity of the RAF engineers and pilots to make it happen.

    • @asharak84

      It was an interesting operation, logistically and technically impressive, and also a really stupid waste of resources :D
      I love the Vulcan in general and love the style points for managing to get non-naval aircraft over Argentina but it achieved almost nothing, knew in advance it was likely to achieve almost nothing and significantly added to the workload of the sea harriers at a time when they were fairly critical to the overall success of the invasion. As someone who didn't live through it, didn't have to make any of the decisions etc I like that it happened, makes for interesting history to learn about, but I think had I been part of the Navy I'd have been very unimpressed.

    fun fact: when one of the British ships sank, the crew in the life boats, while waiting for help, broke into song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from Monty Python's The Life of Brian.
