Remember these two games well as a kid, a great battle. West Ham had some good players then.

I was 13 when this match was played and I remember the buzz of excitement and rushing home from school.
West Ham were a really good team and it seemed to take forever to equalise. But Liverpool played superbly well - particularly in the first half - and the vision of McDermott and Dalglish for the equaliser was brilliant. You always had a chance with Kenny in your team.
This was also a special night because Ian Rush appeared on the scene and it seemed that we had a very special player on our hands.
    Great memories!

Thanks for the upload. Still some years before time and goal titles were put on the pictures. Davis was a classy sports anchor and it was great to see Clough and Moore in their prime.

I love the scaffolding structure they collect the trophy from. Pure 80s.

It would have topped it off if they had gone up a ladder to collect it.

Some people of today, will not know that The League Cup Final was played on a Saturday up to the last time in 1983, you would only get highlights as it was not shown live on tv then.
From 1984 it was live on itv or the bbc and played on a Sunday ... even thought The League Cup Final had Final Re-plays in priviouse years, this was the first time that The League Cup Final was shown live on t.v.

The difference between 1st and 2nd Division football back in the 80's wasn't that big compared to today. West Ham were 2nd Division but still kept players like Parks, Brooking, Lampard, Bonds, Devonshire, etc...... all 1st Division stars and England internationals. As a Liverpool fan I remember the game and goals but I forgot how close WH came to a last-minute equaliser!

and remember that Hammers were FA cup winners in 1980. In the 2nd division then too.

Worth remembering that Hammers were actually in Europe that season, along with Newport County (Welsh Cup holders).
Had West Ham somehow done it, we could've done a European clean sweep with Liverpool and Ipswich taking the European Champions & UEFA Cup.....
No wonder UEFA wanted an excuse to kick us out.....

West Ham United had a great season in 1980-81 as they won the 2nd Division Title with a thirteen point gap from Notts County, and quite a big gap as this was the last season of it being two points for a win. Also reached the Quarter Finals of the European Cup Winners Cup but were well beaten by a sublime Dymano Tblisi side which were cheered off Upton Park.

Darren Hayward When it came time for the big European and Domestic Cup Finals Brian Moore was ITV's first choice commentator from the time he started at London Weekend Television in 1968 to his retirement in 1998. Oddly enough he was only a presenter from London for the World Cups 1970-86 and had to commentate on one match in the 1986 World Cup when the satellite failed and went out to commentate on the final only. He only became a regular commentator for The World Cup from 1990, 1994 and 1998.

Was a shame Hammers had to come a cropper to the Red Machine. Thank Christ that jammy Spurs & then Man Utd got thumpings from them in the following two finals. Liverpool dominating the only domestic trophy they'd never won until this evening.........
Only the World Club & Cup Winners Cup eluded them.......

In terms of The Cup Winners Cup the closest Liverpool got was as beaten finalists in 1966 losing to Dortmund and semi finalists in 1997 losing to PSG Liverpool did not get the opportunity again as the Cup Winners Cup was scrapped just 2 years later

I got sent off for handling the ball over the bar like Terry McDermott the following season. I’m guessing the law must have changed as McDermott didn’t get sent off at Wembley.

You probably got sent off not so much for the deliberate handball but not being in possession of a matching perm and 'tache combo.
