MkIII has a rounder sound, like the presence has been dialed down. MkI sounds a bit more open. But they both kick ass. And the improved MIDI handling from the MkIII could be useful with an upgrade from mastermind Peter Diezel. Great video, man. Appreciate it.
New one mk3 is more for 7str and if you use one - there is no drop in low end try something with 70-74 gauge and you will feel it-it was refined for low tunings and it helps a lot- love your channel🍀
I would love a demo/review of a Diezel Hagen some day. I watched some demo and it sounded so pissed. The texture of the midrange was like a grizzly bear ripping through the speakers. Lol
The mk1 low end is blaoted and unusabke in a lot of settings. The 3 has more than enough low end without being ridiculous and its much easier to keep tight doesnt even need help from a boost or eq pedal. Try a decent front loaded cab like and engl pro and they tighten up even more
I kinda feel like Diezel tried to voice channel 3 to be more a lead channel in mkiii compared to the mki. This is why this channel has more differences. Both sound amazing.
I own a PDH 2003 Mk1, a 2004 Mk2, the best two guitar amps Peter ever made. The Mk1 has more "character" than the Mk3, this is by design. The $4K Mk3 was targeting the "metal heads" placing a $60 OD pedal in front of the preamp, that really don't care for small babies or finding killer tone IN YOUR F'N FINGERS -- FACT. From Plexi to Super Kraken tones the Mk1&2 in stereo with a tasty BOSS SDE3000, and I'm playing on the highest mountain with colorful birds flying out of my PAFs, I might add -- HUGE BABY!!!
Honestly, at this point, Diezel should just make a 4 channel Herbert where channel 2's +/- are separate channels... sincerely, a mk1 Herbert owner. PS - I know the VH4 exists, but they are not the same amp so
Do you happen to use 7 or 8 strings though your Herbert? If so how tight? I understand boosts have a china cabnet full and I own a triple rec so I understand by on its own how tight?
@youngmike8645 man, there's so many factors involved with getting a tight sound or any sound - guitar wood, guitar pickups (active or passive), amp settings, guitar cab size and materials, speakers, pedals, tubes, condition of the equipment, strings, playing styles... etc. With that being said, I wouldn't say the Herbert is the tightest amp I've ever played (that would probably be some sort of solid state amp or plugin & modeler) BUT, the Herbert is the most percussive amp I've ever played or heard live, the only thing to create more "thud" or room shaking low-end would be an ampeg stack or some massive bass drums. It really depends on what you're using (guitar + pedals + cabs) and how you play. My Les Paul with throbak pickups slay thru The Herbert. I've played 7 strings thru it, and I preferred a Schecter 7 string vs a Strandberg 7 or Fast headless 7 string, mainly because of the percussive sound the Schecter had but that was because it had a bigger body & more wood than the other 2. Honestly, it all comes down to preference.
@@ApotheosiZthanks for taking the time to respond. These things are unicorns around my area. Only ever played through 1 Diezel amp and it was the 50w Einstein or was it a Dmoll? I can’t remember. Being the tool fan I am I long for a VH4 but I love my 7&8 string guitars and I’m led to believe the Herbert may be the better fit. I have a triple rec. I always thought the Herbert to be a better more versital Rectifier type amp especially given it’s a preamp distortion and the huge power section 180w right? Percussive is desirable I have enough boosts and overdrives that making it tighter won’t be to hard. Fortunately 33 locks up any and all loose bottom end. Meshuggah in a box.
I like the Mark I better...just seems more full and smoother. Disclaimer : Even though it's the proper way... I will NEVER pronounce it Deet-zel!! It will always be Diesel to me. Lol. V30's in the Randall cab? I can't remember. Good vid!

Love your demos man. Straight forward and pure honesty. This might sound off but any chance new amps are being designed to accept a pedal up front. Who plays an amp with no pedal?? Amp designers have to be awear of this right?
I think the comparison would've been more similar if you've engaged the gain boost on the Mark III. Or put the Mark III's gain around 2:00 and leave the Mark I at 12:00. The Mark III sounded like it had less gain the entire time which just made it sound worse in some areas.
how you don't have at least over 50K subs by now is beyond me. But both those Amps sound crushing. Personally I like the M3 a bit more. Both beasts tho
i think you might be hearing mostly pot taper differences in this review. but, i only have a mk1.5 herbert. but i defintiely experienced the thing with the earlier herbert front end and boost pedals. that might be the major improvement. also the midcut on mine is a hard no. it strips both the tone and the feel.
All the ppl saying mk1 clearly have not owned one. I had the dmoll and a dual rec at the same time as the mk1 and they both smashed it so did all my peaveys and engls the dmoll was a monster though so is the hagen. The others are pretty average but the mk3 is a huge improvement on the mk1
Mk3 could sound close to mk1 if U maxed it out in its smoothest and most bloated setting then it could match the best tone the mk1 could handle sure ...but the mk1 couldn't match the tighter low end and more present and aggressive mids no matter what U do. My ears are pretty whack making a lot of amps sound pretty similar and I can still hear a huge improvement in the mk3 over the mk1. The dmoll I had was just as close to the mark 3 as the mk1 was and I would prefer the dmoll to all other versions bar the mk3. Don't know what U guys are all doing 😅
I've owned a MKi, sounds great by itself, but the low end is over the top. You don't really realize that it's too much until you play with a band. Then you realize that the bottom end is over powering all the mids that you need to be heard in a mix
I love that plus mode on the Mkiii. More gritty, warmer and a tighter low end. The MKI is just so damn rumbly. Hahaha. Both sound meap and will get the job done. Prefer the MKIII overall.
I had similar experience when I have switched from MK I to MK II, but it was slight and mostly in lead, maybe it was simply tube difference, AFAIR according to Diezel in theory there is no difference on the dirty channel, maybe transformers were changed, I dont remember. MKI was more compressed/full, but on lead that was too much, I almost never used lead, while on MKII it was just right, but it wasnt tiny, just less compression and a bit more edge (closer to 2b) What's better than 2 Diezel Herberts? I guess 3 Diezel Herberts :)))))))

Mk1 all day. So glad you put this out here. This brings all the reasons why in my opinion the MK1 is the more desirable amp for heavy tones. I hope a MK4 revision brings back the aggressive elements of the MK1.
You said the MK3 is leaving. Was it a demo, borrowed or are you selling it? Just curious if you’re selling it, then it must not be good enough to live in your current stable.
I assume you also ruled out power tubes. I’ve bought new matched quads and sextuplets just to have a bad tube off the rip. In todays market an output transformer and a set of power tubes are damn close in price lol. Best of luck.
I own the Mark 1 I believe not the actual but the Lasse Lammert from STL tones and the AMP is AMAZING!!!
Love the reviews. I am dying for a VHX. I have a VH4 but want to ditch the pedal mess and use my GC Pro to save all my patches from the VHX.
does the VHX have both Mk1/2 and Mk3 sounds in there or it's basically mk3?

My money is on the MK1 for this shootout. Awesome vid like always!!! \m/
Man, the MkI just slays
all i want is for someone to set this beast up as a fullstack, dime the gain and volume pots and see how far this thing can be heard.
I have to give the nod to the Marcus 1. Seems to be richer and more full in gain and low mid. Another solid video Mr Bull!

What are your thoughts on the MGL amp works? Sound similar to the JCM 800zzzz
There seems to be a slow attack compression with high gain settings on the mk1 that isnt there in the mk3. Is anyone else hearing that??
I'm kinda relieved I don't overly love any of these because of the price. They don't have the chug I'm looking for and get with my Mark IV.
