I am still trying to figure out which songs are what Blackmore deems Shoe-shine. Love don't mean a thing is soulful, but also bluesy. Besides, the notes to the 35th anniversary edition of Stormbringer state that Blackmore invited "a street busker, an African American guy who was singing a song about money" to meet with Coverdale and Hughes, all of whom worked on the composition. Without crediting this busker, Blackmore is very much responsible for putting this track on the album. Next, there is the funky You can't do it right. This one clearly is new musical territory for Deep Purple. Yet, Blackmore is credited as one of the writers. Only Lord and Paice did not contribute. Perhaps anyone who has followed Purple and it's many offshoots may notice a similarity with You can't do it right and Rainbow's No Release from the Difficult to Cure album.
Also, a third of the album was written by Blackmore and Coverdale. Those tracks are definitely not Shoe-shine. Along with Love don't mean a thing, Highball Shooter and Gypsy were written by the whole band. If Blackmore was involved, he could have requested that alternative takes been recorded to satisfy him. What is most weird is that Highball Shooter, which does sound funky, had its origins in Blackmore's guitar solo during live performances of Space Truckin' in 1974. Check out their playing at California Jam. If Blackmore is playing the riff, he was responsible for the sound of the song. Gypsy is something that really would have worked for Rainbow, so it is likely not a song he would object to. Holy man and Hold on are the only tracks without Blackmore as a contributor. Holy man is soulful and lyrically it seems like it could have been a Trapeze's track from Medusa. It was nice to see something Hughes could perform on his own; too bad it was never performed live with Purple. Hold on, a track with very little input from Blackmore, according to the liner notes from the 35th anniversary edition of Stormbringer, was of Lord's doing. Consider also some of Lord's work after Purple; in Paice Ashton Lord, Ghost Story has a funky groove to it. Should Lord be held accountable for bringing the Shoe-shine sound to Purple? Hell, check out Ian Gillian Band's live tour for Clear Air Turbulence; his renditions of Smoke on the Water and Woman from Tokyo are funky. Maybe Blackmore regretted having Hughes in the band and underestimated Coverdale's talent in writing and singing music suited to what Rainbow released. In the end, it is not clear what troubled Blackmore about the music, especially when most of those around him dabbled with soul music as well as Blackmore during the Joe Lynn Turner period. One last thing, I wish the band did at least try to record Black Sheep of the Family. Just imagine Hughes singing lead, with Coverdale singing in a secondary role, on that song with some heavy keyboard sounds from Lord. Perhaps Purple were too pampered and had abandoned the creativity they displayed a few years earlier when they had to prove themselves.

Love it! Increible rola!
I will always hold on for deep purple
This music fascinates.
I was only 17!Lovely years and song s!
Rewelacyjny kawałek. Uwielbiam Mark 3 i Mark 4.
Uwielbiam Come Taste the Band, Spectrum i w ogóle wszystko w czym grał. Do tego był chyba sympatycznym człowiekiem. Wielka strata.

Glen Hughes is something else man , he’s so cool .... I love Deep Purple so much this lineup and off course the one before with Ian Gillan, Ritchie is so original on his playing....Ritchie is totally genius, Deep Purple is that band that had the greatest musicians of all time , unreal Deep Purple always in my heart as one of the greatest hard rock bands ever
Leandro Machado
I presume that you’re talking about Glenn Hughes?
Kasper Kjærsgaard yes man I am sorry yess Glen thank you for the observation I’ve fixed
Leandro Machado i love DP with Gillan, but Glenn has special place in my heart, i love his bass playing, his singing, and his look too, he was so handsome 😋

Leandro Machado i see that not only i am in love with young Glenn. No doubt he has something that acctracts me... i don't know... maybe his beautiful face, his smile or these wonderful hair? And i realy like his bass playing, basslines in Burn or You Keep on Moving were amazing! And his voice... jeez, so good!
