My great grandfather was from belarus and got drafted to fight the fins in march 1944. He died near Viipuri, now vyborg, around June 1944, around the time and place this movie is set. Rest in peace to all those who died in that terrible conflict, I wish for it to never happen again.
It's always so interesting to see movies about the war and specific battles that aren't American blockbusters. And also fun to randomly hear your own language 😄🇸🇪. Thanks for the upload! 🙏
It's great, but I wouldn't call it really a movie per say. Rather a dramatized documentary. My both grandfathers fought there and got wounded, but survived.
They had less men, less tanks, less planes, and less equipment, yet they fought on bravely qnd prevented their country from being taken over. Finland is what many should aspire for as a country when faced against overwhelming odds

@kane3825 That was Estonian volunteer,Captain Olev Aun.He was murdered in Stockholm by KGB in 1951.Just a few days before he was supposed to move to Canada with his family.
Just a great movie showing an accurate representation of what really happened. Quite refreshing to see more attention paid to the historical accuracy instead of special effects. God bless all the young that have sacrificed so much on behalf of freedom.

All war movies should be like this!!! Non stop action, no sappy love story with some dumb broad, no long dialogue scenes talking about nonsense , no boring character build up scenes showing soldiers when they were little boys back on a farm, no writing letters to mommy saying they are fine and that they miss them. Only action packed mayhem !!
The thing is that there rarely is long arcing hero stories in real war. Just indivitual moments of heroism scattered across the mass of figthing soldiers in battlefields. this movie did not have main carecters and neigther does war.

What an iconic movie (documentary) - no main character, no love story, 100% male cast - war against men and you will learn a good deal of history while watching it. I would even suggest that 15 years later it would be impossible to make movie like this...

The Talvisota was a very different battlefield when small section of infantry units could stop entire platoons. For instance in Karelia the Russians lost 80% of their tanks due to mines and rough terrain. Finland was the last country to fight with the Germans until they signed the armistice 6 months before the end of the war. I love Finland 🇫🇮
I did’nt know in deep the whole story. The action scenes are very well done, all the characters are good. Moreover there is plenty of original tanks and weapons. Good movie really.
32:36, this scene was loosely based on a real event during the war. A Finnish KV-1 was ordered to the front to intercept three T34-85s. When it turned the corner, a shot hit the front of the KV-1, and it got lucky it hit the most armored spot. The KV-1 backed up into safety and the crew bailed, all of their ears were bleeding. While a new crew was being assembled, the Finnish T34-76s were ordered up. When the Finnish T-34 turned the corner it saw that all of the Russian T-34s were backing away, it was able to knock out all three of them. The KV-1 can be found at the Parola tank museum in Finland, where you can see where it was hit.

Great movie overall, while not liked by critics. This movie showed greatly how things happened in Tali-Ihantala through key elements on it and not only by characters only. It showed greatly how some of the battles in there commenced and not making us finnish soldiers supermen. My great uncle's 35th Infrantry regiment was deployed to Ihantala 1st of July, he was killed in action on 7th of July.
I have it on DVD. The reason is because I looked up the best war movies and it was on the list. So I guess it depends who you ask. From the comments here it seems some love it, some hate it, some don't like to read, and some are just confused by the goodies and baddies not wearing black and white hats. 😂
The highest compliment I can pay the Finn's is that although I am British I would like to have fought along side these men . Total love 💓 & respect to Finland .
If you make a comparison of other factors than the sizes of their population and territory. In the legendary stand of the Spartans at Thermopyle. Not only did every one think the Persians were a massive giant coming at Athens and, thereby, Greece. In reality, it was not only a massive giant, but this giant had the best weapons and units drawn from the four corners of the Persian Empire, mad and coming to punish and destroy Athens as an example to the rest of the western world. "See what happens if you help an enemy of Persia. Athens would be defeated. Her men put to the sword, it's women raped, male children castrated, women, children and elderly sold into slavery, the city burned, lands salted, temples torn down and it's religious statues broken or melted down to symbolize the destruction of their Gods. That was Persian justice. The ferocious nature of the Persions was reknown. The naval forces at their disposal numbered thousands. They were a modern, for that Era, nation. With the incorporation of the Greek city states that joined Him, Persia matched or exceeded the weaponry of the Greek forces. ATHENS AND HER ALLIES AGAINST PERSIA...are you mad! The Greeks winning was not even a passing thought. It was a joke. The Soviets are a different matter? Contrary to what existed in propanda of the day. Russia simply lacked the weapons, training, intelligence, industrial base or LEADERSHIP to fulfill even a small part of the image most people had of Russia at the time. Realistically, Finnish Units were not being challenged by even standard units. Remember, Stalin had 20,000 officers, and civilians associated with the military, shot as possible counter-revolutionay threats. Most of the best military and intellectual minds of Russia were eliminated. So they had NO great reserve of even competent and able-bodied leaders to lead or train it's units. Russia was also barely keeping itself economically sound enough to fight or supply any war, let alone one in the frozen North. It's weapons were outdated and most personal were not properly trained to properly use the weapons and tanks they possessed to even their minimum effectiveness. Finish forces showed the world and Stalin what was wrong with His army and what needed to be done if He hoped, beyond hope, to challenge the German Army for Hitler had said so and every body knew German and Russian armies were going to meet in combat eventually. In WW2, no Finnish forces ever achieved any fame fighting alongside the regular German Army. The Finn's were barely the equal of the standard German unit of the day. The Finnish forces were not really good except for the use of Ski Troops. They just fought against regular troops that were being lead by the stupid leaders that His purges left Russia. The Finnish troops in the "Winter War" were, at most, no tougher than the average soldier of the day.. like I said: The only thing they contributed to Military tactics was their use of "ski troops" as fast attack units in the snowy hills and mountainous regions. They were doomed to lose the war but unit to unit, they were primarily equal. Russia re-organized the units and appointed a reasonably good general. A simple solution to what should have been an equally simple problem. Roll over the Finn army, if nothing else comes to mind, then by weight of sheer force of numbers.
In winter warfare for example one of the best//the best of Soviet skiing brigades perished while trying to fight against the Finnish military forces. During the Continuation War the Finnish troops had to go to help the German troops in fighting against the Soviets in the northern area since the Germans' warfare was so poor (especially concerning the SS-troops there in the beginning: their fighting was very weak). The Finnish Army organized Winter Warfare courses to the Germans in Finland. The Finnish troops developed and used the "motti"-tactics in warfare (visit for example the Museum of Raatteen tie at Suomussalmi, Finland) where the Soviet troops with their vehicles, instruments, etc. were destroyed in huge amounts in the Winter War. Finland stayed independent. Finland was not occupied before, nor during, neither after the second world war. In Europe there were ONLY three capitals of the counties which fought in the WW 2 which were NOT occupied: London, Helsinki (the Capital of Finland) and Moscow. No doubt this a first rate movie as are most European war movies Real KV1 s , T26 s Stugs and T34 76 and 85 s . Period prices in a period made War movie unlike American productions in the 60s and 70 s that are using tanks 20 years in the future. I will take subtitles anytime and realism over in historical garbage. The acting is also head and shoulders superior to anything Hollywood can produce today. Perhaps a very few of their productions may qualify for authenticity but the operative word is FEW.
Even names are real, One milloin men were fighting on Carelian Isthmus. My father was fighting in regiment called "" Jänkäjääkärit the lock of Ihantala". Father was a sniper and group leader too. Finnish artillery with FAF and German Squadron Kuhlmey showed their awfull power at beginning of July 1944. Russia was totally defeated. I met Major Suurkari and General Puroma after war personally.

The great people of Finland and their armed forces have my greatest admiration. They overcame insurmountable odds and prevailed against the monster Soviet Union under the leadership of the murderer Stalin and his thugs.
We're the same "blood type" Dave, I guess. I hate it when war movies are too sentimental and mushy, centered around some silly love story. A few exceptions are movies where the war starts because of love for a woman like Troy for instance. My pleasure!
The Panzerfaust instructor at 41:12 is wearing a West German BGS M53 Stahlhelm. Although inaccurate to the period, that's a nice touch to see in a film, since those are quite hard to come by. You can tell a LOT of effort went into props and gear. Two thumbs up!
Fine war film. The story line, jumping from battle to battle was unique. Different characters in some of the fields made the movie much more interesting than others. Can't believe all apparently authentic equipment, stugs, FW 190!, T 34's to no end. Got a good surf buddy from Finland, gonna have to turn him on to this flick. Five popcorn boxes from me!
20:05 Now the Blue Swastika was mostly adopted in the Air force in 1918 Yet it still held significant importance to some finns, however, like he points out and is a bit of foreshadowing, the Swastika as we know today has had it's reputation tarnished forever even though the symbol had different connotation such as that of luck or peace. To this day Finland still uses the swastika for the air force academy but no longer uses it on its aircrafts.
This is a great movie in every way. Acting and authenticity is superb. The only drawback is you really have to be Finnish or know a lot about the history of Finland to understand what’s going on sometimes. Not having any arrows or markings on the map also make things confusing. Otherwise just enjoy it as a battle film
To those that think that Finland was Nazi: - There were Finnish Jews at the front - Finnish soldiers helped them to build a synagogue at the front (Do you know about any other army that did this??) - The Germans wanted to give Iron crosses to five Jews. The battle of Tali-Ihantala was the largest battle in the history of Northern Europe. It also had the largest conecentration of artillery fire in history. The fire of over 20 artillery battalions (not batteries) was concentrated into a single target area. This is over 250 artillery guns.
I live in north central British Columbia. This movie looks like it was filmed in the forests of my backyard. Same logging roads. Same type of trees, bushes, willows and even down to the piles of ash left over from slash burning in the open cut blocks. And yes, there are even very young trees (spruce I think) obviously put there by tree planters.
I treated this like a movie. Excellent and entertaining. If one can call war entertaining. Better on the silver screen than in reality. Men will always wage war sadly.
I like that the Swedish volunteers are included, one of the few times the swedes actually were in combat during the war besides the winter war and the SS.
@@Eddy67756 The Finland-Svenska volunteers were the continuation war in which they fought in the "Svenska frivillig bataljonen. I'm referring to the SFK, Svenska frivilig kåren which were made up of around 3800 Swedes equipped with Swedish weapons and gear during the winter war.
All I know , I ve been viewed by films and documentaries tje victories of Allied forces . And the courage of their men. Only now through this film , there is histories how few armies of German and Finland fought in defence their position and gained victory. They are heroes from their side and the fallen Red Army are heroes from their side. And I wished we human that live in this only world never go to war nomore. Let other nation lives in their country freely and can know each other ways of life through strong friendship. Live Peacefully No War.
Those sturmgeschutze that we see in this film could be some of the ones the Finns used in WW 2.They used them,at least,untill 1965 the ones they had left.In Finnish museum these days.And the Soumi submachinegun was used for a good many years.Did some shooting with one some years ago.Very good precision.Was as treat to shoot it.One of the absolutley best submachine Guns ever,execept the weight.Around 8 kg with a 75 round drum mag.

Yeah in finland option the big soviet was bad. They try occupied our small country. And german was only one to help amd give weapons and outher so we survive . And Finland was not axis country. In every side there was good and bad people.

What's really cool is the authenticity. I read that the StuGs used at 11:32 are the real deal, having actually served during the Continuation War and were preserved after the end of hostilities.
Finland Took The StuGs out from service on 1963, so Finland REALLY Loved these Tanks, they had a radio and powerful Cannon and Crew could easily communicate much better than in Russian Tanks.
I had to feel a little sorry for the Russian army. They got their asses kicked big time. I got a tiny FINLAND flag on my bicycle trailer by coincidence. A couple of people recognized it here in Arizona.

It seems a lot in the comments are confused. I'd suggest reading the description and paying attention during the first few minutes of the movie where it describes what the situation is. The first few minutes of dialog (around where a press unit is talking to the Finnish troops) should also clear up some of the things people seem to be confused about as they mention the use of the swastika and how the Stug is different to a tank etc. They went out of their way to include these are plot points to help us understand what is going on. A minute or two glacing at wiki for the Winter War and Continuation War would probably clear up most questions. It's nearly two hours long so I think it's worth spending two minutes finding out what it's about.

I did’nt know in deep the whole story. The action scenes are very well done, all the characters are good. Moreover there is plenty of original tanks and weapons. Good movie really.
32:36, this scene was loosely based on a real event during the war. A Finnish KV-1 was ordered to the front to intercept three T34-85s. When it turned the corner, a shot hit the front of the KV-1, and it got lucky it hit the most armored spot. The KV-1 backed up into safety and the crew bailed, all of their ears were bleeding. While a new crew was being assembled, the Finnish T34-76s were ordered up. When the Finnish T-34 turned the corner it saw that all of the Russian T-34s were backing away, it was able to knock out all three of them.
The KV-1 can be found at the Parola tank museum in Finland, where you can see where it was hit.

Great movie overall, while not liked by critics. This movie showed greatly how things happened in Tali-Ihantala through key elements on it and not only by characters only. It showed greatly how some of the battles in there commenced and not making us finnish soldiers supermen.
My great uncle's 35th Infrantry regiment was deployed to Ihantala 1st of July, he was killed in action on 7th of July.
I have it on DVD. The reason is because I looked up the best war movies and it was on the list. So I guess it depends who you ask. From the comments here it seems some love it, some hate it, some don't like to read, and some are just confused by the goodies and baddies not wearing black and white hats. 😂

The highest compliment I can pay the Finn's is that although I am British I would like to have fought along side these men . Total love 💓 & respect to Finland .
You have to admire the Finns. A heroic war against a country 50 times bigger.
If you make a comparison of other factors than the sizes of their population and territory.
In the legendary stand of the Spartans at Thermopyle. Not only did every one think the Persians were a massive giant coming at Athens and, thereby, Greece. In reality, it was not only a massive giant, but this giant had the best weapons and units drawn from the four corners of the Persian Empire, mad and coming to punish and destroy Athens as an example to the rest of the western world. "See what happens if you help an enemy of Persia. Athens would be defeated. Her men put to the sword, it's women raped, male children castrated, women, children and elderly sold into slavery, the city burned, lands salted, temples torn down and it's religious statues broken or melted down to symbolize the destruction of their Gods. That was Persian justice.
The ferocious nature of the Persions was reknown. The naval forces at their disposal numbered thousands. They were a modern, for that Era, nation. With the incorporation of the Greek city states that joined Him, Persia matched or exceeded the weaponry of the Greek forces. ATHENS AND HER ALLIES AGAINST PERSIA...are you mad! The Greeks winning was not even a passing thought. It was a joke.
The Soviets are a different matter? Contrary to what existed in propanda of the day. Russia simply lacked the weapons, training, intelligence, industrial base or LEADERSHIP to fulfill even a small part of the image most people had of Russia at the time. Realistically, Finnish Units were not being challenged by even standard units. Remember, Stalin had 20,000 officers, and civilians associated with the military, shot as possible counter-revolutionay threats. Most of the best military and intellectual minds of Russia were eliminated. So they had NO great reserve of even competent and able-bodied leaders to lead or train it's units.
Russia was also barely keeping itself economically sound enough to fight or supply any war, let alone one in the frozen North. It's weapons were outdated and most personal were not properly trained to properly use the weapons and tanks they possessed to even their minimum effectiveness.
Finish forces showed the world and Stalin what was wrong with His army and what needed to be done if He hoped, beyond hope, to challenge the German Army for Hitler had said so and
every body knew German and Russian armies were going to meet in combat eventually.
In WW2, no Finnish forces ever achieved any fame fighting alongside the regular German Army. The Finn's were barely the equal of the standard German unit of the day. The Finnish forces were not really good except for the use of Ski Troops. They just fought against regular troops that were being lead by the stupid leaders that His purges left Russia.
The Finnish troops in the "Winter War" were, at most, no tougher than the average soldier of the day.. like I said: The only thing they contributed to Military tactics was their use of "ski troops" as fast attack units in the snowy hills and mountainous regions. They were doomed to lose the war but unit to unit, they were primarily equal. Russia re-organized the units and appointed a reasonably good general. A simple solution to what should have been an equally simple problem. Roll over the Finn army, if nothing else comes to mind, then by weight of sheer force of numbers.
In winter warfare for example one of the best//the best of Soviet skiing brigades perished while trying to fight against the Finnish military forces. During the Continuation War the Finnish troops had to go to help the German troops in fighting against the Soviets in the northern area since the Germans' warfare was so poor (especially concerning the SS-troops there in the beginning: their fighting was very weak). The Finnish Army organized Winter Warfare courses to the Germans in Finland. The Finnish troops developed and used the "motti"-tactics in warfare (visit for example the Museum of Raatteen tie at Suomussalmi, Finland) where the Soviet troops with their vehicles, instruments, etc. were destroyed in huge amounts in the Winter War. Finland stayed independent. Finland was not occupied before, nor during, neither after the second world war. In Europe there were ONLY three capitals of the counties which fought in the WW 2 which were NOT occupied: London, Helsinki (the Capital of Finland) and Moscow. I am grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ, God the Father and the Holy Spirit for His help to Finland and the Finnish people during, before and after the second world war, all glory, praise, thanksgiving and worship only to God the Father forever! No doubt this a first rate movie as are most European war movies Real KV1 s , T26 s Stugs and T34 76 and 85 s . Period prices in a period made War movie unlike American productions in the 60s and 70 s that are using tanks 20 years in the future. I will take subtitles anytime and realism over in historical garbage. The acting is also head and shoulders superior to anything Hollywood can produce today. Perhaps a very few of their productions may qualify for authenticity but the operative word is FEW.

Even names are real, One milloin men were fighting on Carelian Isthmus. My father was fighting in regiment called "" Jänkäjääkärit the lock of Ihantala". Father was a sniper and group leader too. Finnish artillery with FAF and German Squadron Kuhlmey showed their awfull power at beginning of July 1944. Russia was totally defeated. I met Major Suurkari and General Puroma after war personally.
My father was an Artillery Spotter in Tali-Ihantala. Not the easiest position to be in.

@@ColinFreeman-kh9us Thank You Sir! He never talked about the war. When asked about it, he said that it is not much fun to remember your best buddies head roll into a ditch when he just stood beside you. The spotters were personally targeted by enemy artillery if they were spotted.
The great people of Finland and their armed forces have my greatest admiration. They overcame insurmountable odds and prevailed against the monster Soviet Union under the leadership of the murderer Stalin and his thugs.

We're the same "blood type" Dave, I guess. I hate it when war movies are too sentimental and mushy, centered around some silly love story. A few exceptions are movies where the war starts because of love for a woman like Troy for instance. My pleasure!
The Panzerfaust instructor at 41:12 is wearing a West German BGS M53 Stahlhelm. Although inaccurate to the period, that's a nice touch to see in a film, since those are quite hard to come by. You can tell a LOT of effort went into props and gear. Two thumbs up!

Fine war film. The story line, jumping from battle to battle was unique. Different characters in some of the fields made the movie much more interesting than others. Can't believe all apparently authentic equipment, stugs, FW 190!, T 34's to no end. Got a good surf buddy from Finland, gonna have to turn him on to this flick. Five popcorn boxes from me!

20:05 Now the Blue Swastika was mostly adopted in the Air force in 1918 Yet it still held significant importance to some finns, however, like he points out and is a bit of foreshadowing, the Swastika as we know today has had it's reputation tarnished forever even though the symbol had different connotation such as that of luck or peace.
To this day Finland still uses the swastika for the air force academy but no longer uses it on its aircrafts.

This is a great movie in every way. Acting and authenticity is superb. The only drawback is you really have to be Finnish or know a lot about the history of Finland to understand what’s going on sometimes. Not having any arrows or markings on the map also make things confusing. Otherwise just enjoy it as a battle film
To those that think that Finland was Nazi:
- There were Finnish Jews at the front
- Finnish soldiers helped them to build a synagogue at the front (Do you know about any other army that did this??)
- The Germans wanted to give Iron crosses to five Jews. Some of the Germans did probably know that they were Jews.
- Those five Jews refused to take the Iron crosses.
Finns were not nazis. No need to smear the brave Finns.

The battle of Tali-Ihantala was the largest battle in the history of Northern Europe. It also had the largest conecentration of artillery fire in history. The fire of over 20 artillery battalions (not batteries) was concentrated into a single target area. This is over 250 artillery guns.
I live in north central British Columbia. This movie looks like it was filmed in the forests of my backyard. Same logging roads. Same type of trees, bushes, willows and even down to the piles of ash left over from slash burning in the open cut blocks. And yes, there are even very young trees (spruce I think) obviously put there by tree planters.
Those where 70-100y trees.We also got them plenty :)
Unexpectedly well produced ww2 movie. Rarely goes 10min without battle action. Not recommended for sissies.

I treated this like a movie. Excellent and entertaining. If one can call war entertaining. Better on the silver screen than in reality. Men will always wage war sadly.
I like that the Swedish volunteers are included, one of the few times the swedes actually were in combat during the war besides the winter war and the SS.

@@Eddy67756 The Finland-Svenska volunteers were the continuation war in which they fought in the "Svenska frivillig bataljonen. I'm referring to the SFK, Svenska frivilig kåren which were made up of around 3800 Swedes equipped with Swedish weapons and gear during the winter war.

All I know , I ve been viewed by films and documentaries tje victories of Allied forces . And the courage of their men.
Only now through this film , there is histories how few armies of German and Finland fought in defence their position and gained victory. They are heroes from their side and the fallen Red Army are heroes from their side.
And I wished we human that live in this only world never go to war nomore. Let other nation lives in their country freely and can know each other ways of life through strong friendship. Live Peacefully No War.

I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time but previously had only been able to find segments.
Those sturmgeschutze that we see in this film could be some of the ones the Finns used in WW 2.They used them,at least,untill 1965 the ones they had left.In Finnish museum these days.And the Soumi submachinegun was used for a good many years.Did some shooting with one some years ago.Very good precision.Was as treat to shoot it.One of the absolutley best submachine Guns ever,execept the weight.Around 8 kg with a 75 round drum mag.

What's really cool is the authenticity. I read that the StuGs used at 11:32 are the real deal, having actually served during the Continuation War and were preserved after the end of hostilities.
Finland Took The StuGs out from service on 1963, so Finland REALLY Loved these Tanks, they had a radio and powerful Cannon and Crew could easily communicate much better than in Russian Tanks.

I had to feel a little sorry for the Russian army. They got their asses kicked big time. I got a tiny FINLAND flag on my bicycle trailer by coincidence. A couple of people recognized it here in Arizona.

The Russians do not like to talk or write about this war and for obvious reasons. There are no Russian movies about the Finnish war that I know about.
@@joseffinn5836 There is one that mentions it briefly (as a flashback) and takes part in the karelian front, altough they fought german commandos in that one and is not a movie is a small series.

It seems a lot in the comments are confused. I'd suggest reading the description and paying attention during the first few minutes of the movie where it describes what the situation is.
The first few minutes of dialog (around where a press unit is talking to the Finnish troops) should also clear up some of the things people seem to be confused about as they mention the use of the swastika and how the Stug is different to a tank etc. They went out of their way to include these are plot points to help us understand what is going on. A minute or two glacing at wiki for the Winter War and Continuation War would probably clear up most questions. It's nearly two hours long so I think it's worth spending two minutes finding out what it's about.

It is hard to comprehend, that, after this, it took Finland so long to join NATO.

Rusland zelf bleef betrokkenheid ontkennen, Onafhankelijke Internetjournalistiek toonde die betrokkenheid echter toch aan, reportages daarover staan elders op YT. Het agressieve gedrag van de Russen zorgde voor alertheid bij de Oost-Europese buren van Rusland, die daardoor vrij eenvoudig ingelijfd konden worden door de Navo.
