What happens if you click the eject button on the keyboard? Does it dismount the drive?
Nothing happen, just if you have a superdrive connected by USB, you can buy a box for that.
An angel gets its wings.
I did an HFS+ Mojave RAID 0 with 2 ssd on an MBP 15" mid 2012. It had initially 1 ssd. The first thing I noticed was that the booting time doubled. But after booting, the laptop is twice as fast. It used to take 20 seconds from cold boot, now it takes 45 seconds. Still worth it, it's twice as fast now for work.
1:09 DON'T do this. This step is TOTALLY UNNECESSARY and the cable is very easy to snap and you'd lose your iSight camera. The only way to fix this would to completely take apart the front assembly of the MBP screen and run a cable up into the screen again, a painstakingly difficult task that can take HOURS. Instead, just carefully move the subwoofer up a little to allow the optical drive to slide from underneath it.
Do it carefully then... Done it hundreds of times, no issues here...
@@jovial469 Well, maybe you're more dexterous at this than I am, but if you look at the iFixit guide, there are literally dozens of people complaining about this very step. I was just hoping to help out others not make the mistake I made. :)
@@MatthewChenIsAwesome No, no, I'm not, really. Maybe I was just lucky to grab first time by the plug instead of the wire, and then I kept on doing it in the same way. It does help a lot to have one of those curved tweezers from ifixit or alternatively from bookyard.
love your tutorials. I'm upgrading mid 2012 macbook pro... So slow but this helped me learned so much about computers that I didn't know.
" I just spudged all over my... Never mind" nice! :) 0:40
I really like how this dude explains things. so concise and to the point.
I have a question. I really want a SATA III with 6Gb/s transfer speeds. However, as many people know, the optical bay doesn't support a transfer speed that fast (I think its about 300mbs/sec). First question, is it even worth going through all the trouble, should I just get a "slower" ssd that matches the optical bay speeds. OR, could I take out the HDD, put it in the data doubler, then take the SSD and put it in the main port. Firstly, would this work? Secondly, would I have to boot up and reinstall another version of OS X Mavericks, because the location of the OS changed? Please respond. I love computers, but I just can't figure this question out.
Hi Trace. I was wondering the same thing. It is my understood, that from late 2011 macbook pros, the optical drive port is 6gb/s, but is limited to 3. If you check the SATA ports both are intel 6 series chipset and product id, both have link speed for 6gb.s and have AHCI 1.30 support. But the link speed in the DVDRW port is 1.5gbs. Since i do not have the caddy, i do not know if these is a reading from the drive or from the EFI. I am getting the caddy next week just to check it out, since the caddy cost now 35.00 in mac sales.
It depends on the model you have. As Carlos said Late 2011 Models have 6gb/s port but are limited to 3gb/s. But with the introduction of the Mid 2012 Models (or at least the Mid 2012 models) the optical bay can run SSD or HDD that are Sata III/6gb/s. I have no idea if the brand/type of optical bay adapter matters though
At last I get the ssd. Mx100 512gb. The caddy is here but I have to pick it up. Apple, in order to access the caddy 6gig x s a EFI has send a update. Some models , even 2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch these still block. At these moment I am trying to get a 2013 model but no luck. regarding the optical if no you no luck activating the 6gbps port get the 3 gb ssd and you should be ok. We try to install a 6 speed drive but there was a lot of errors even that the drives drops to 3gbs x s. So we get a 3 model and works perfect.
I would have gone with this model for the upgradability but the display resolution was holding me back. I'm pretty happy with the latest model! :D
Emerson Hidalgo Exactly where I am right now!
please talk faster next time
Great vid man!
SSD Drive? Solid State Drive Drive?
andreas16700 just like lcd Display ^^
Just like ATM machine
The smartest idea, and the best configuration I've ever seen..
u should do a 2015 version of this video
+DjChrisChip can't..... the items are soldered to the motherboard in the 2015 version
The PCIE ssd has more write and read speeds than this Reid configuration.
cant do it mate ... 2015 models r crappy for what they r in terms of modifications that one can do to their macbook pro's
Oh yes that's right... I am in a tough spot tech wise. Need to upgrade my current tech however I do not want the current 15" mb pro
DjChrisChip what laptop do you use now ?
THX for the vid! I just upgraded my backup MB Pro 13" mid-2012. Swapped 8gb memory and 512 HDD for 2 256gig samsung 850 EVO Pro's in raid and 16 GB mac memory. Getting 760 write and 988 read speeds. Awesome!
can u make a macbook a 2tb superbeast?
i love this i want to upgrade my mac pro its very slow i want it to be fast and save a whole lot of movies
antonio m if you want speed you will need 2 1tb ssds wich would cost about $1000 or more
antonio m just get an external drive for your media... Like Brandon said 2 1tb solid state drives would cost a lot more than even a 4tb external drive.
Great information.
Thanks Jonathan!
Paul
Nevermind, I reached the part of the video that shows your results. Very nice, man.
Dang, this could still read faster than my mid 2014 retina 15! They only passed that read speed with the 2015 15" and most things after.
YOUR VIDEOS are so amazing. I cant even express how professionally made your videos are. How to you not have loads of subs???
I was audibly amazed when I saw you open those applications!
Yay. Nice job man! I am glad you got this vid out! I have been looking forward to it for a long time.
If you can find one compatible with it. Keep in mind while the hard drive bay on 2011 MBP's use Sata 3, the optical bay uses Sata 2.
Just did the same thing with mine using 2 500 GB Samsung EVO SSDs and the hardwrk adapter kit. Works like a charm! Great for big hauls of statistical datasets and music-software such as ivory by synthogy. Thanks for the tutorial :D
Your tutorials are awesome man, you're a great teacher thank you.
Great video. Love when they're really well made and easy to understand like this.
Ivan, an SSD is by far the best thing you can do to speed up your computer!
bought all parts and ready to upgrade!
2 SSD Hard Drives 240GB each, Sata3 6GB + 16GB Ram 1333MHz!
the OWC Data Doubler? Amazing quality and so professional!
I don't own a Mac. I find these tutorials fascinating.
2019 and Apple confirmed the MacOS catalina will be available on these 2012 models. Definetlly worth keep one instead buying those new super expensive ones
Thank you! This helped very much! Successfully added the SSD and cloned my old drive for better performance!
Thank you for finishing the series!!!
Yes it does. The SATA connection for your CD drive is probably SATA2 while the one where your current hard drive is, is SATA3. Without getting technical, SATA3 is a lot faster and so if you put the ssd in the SATA2 connection (where your CD) is, your only going to get a fraction of the performance.
a lot of why or when it would fail is simply dependant on the life expectancy of the drive and how or what it would actually be used for. unlike regular hard drives there is a huge difference in how long these will last, how many times they can be written to, and how permanent the information stored on them actually is. until i see proof of these drives dependability i will not be upgrading to them myself even though they are really appealing to me. i usually keep my systems a LONG time.
Yes, you can keep your original HDD in and replace the optical drive with the SSD. It won't be as fast as the RAID setup but you can use the SSD as the boot drive and HDD for other file storage.
There is a way to clone your HDD and put it all on your SSD, but I think it would be best to install Mac OSX to the SSD and then copy over your files. Search on Google for the best method
the best tutorial in this matter, and i have seen a lot !
Really nice video. OWC's instructions for installing its data doubler wasn't such updated as this video - for macbook pro 2012 (non retina), slight internal differences than previous macbooks, data doubler purchased on october.
Great video....going SSD for boot this weekend with a 750 in the optical bay
Love using SSDs! I have one in my 8 core Mac Pro (Corsair SSD) and one in my 15" MacBook Pro (OWC SSD)!
This is not only liked, but favored too, you are awesome, thank you
Because I haven't heard this before when browsing apple videos. Thanks for the heads up!
I'll look forward to seeing your video of this amazingly easy task?
it was explained pretty well in the video
hey i know this is late. but hope u feel better with those health things. great reveiws and stuff. truly
If you run the OS from SSD, it will be faster. More memory helps with running software. After Effects, and other digital audio/video soft will be faster. The HD can be used for storing data.
Yes, I would actually suggest to put the SSD where to current Apple HDD is and put the Apple HDD where the optical drive was. I would suggest to put your programs and OS on the SSD (which is the primary drive) and use the other drive for common file storage (images, documents, videos, etc.).
Fusion (hybrid) drive is 1 hard drive with built in flash. RAID 0 (stripping) is 2 identical drive optimized for speed. RAID 1 (mirror) is 2 drives minimum used for redundancy.
Read is how fast that it can read (or open) an application. Write is how fast it can write (or download) information like duplicating or transferring to a new location.
I completely agree nothing can beat a build desktop with windows on it. not only can u replace and upgrade parts as technology gets faster and better but you also know exactly what is in ur computer if you built and it will be faster than any market laptop for the same price... the only reason why people would rather just waste money on a macbook pro is because of simplicity and convenience...
Great video bro!! You do incredible work!!
i love how if you only make one mistake, you're screwed out of 4000 dollars. i have so much respect for you and your channel . john, you are awesome!!!
This is probably twice as fast though I haven't seen any benchmarks of the new retina mbp. The read/write speeds of this is just gahhhhh!
Finally! Thanks for sharing! Pretty awesome MacBook Pro!
So in part 1 you started with 8GB and now it's randomly jumped to 16GB?! Continuity is a wonderful thing!
He works to hard, for us. He needs way more views, each of his videos are so authentic... I couldn't imagine filming, lighting, importing editing uploading info. But yea don't know why that crossed my mind
i am running my MBP on a 128GB SSD, and 750GB HD 7200RPM as a second drive, and working great so far... Also got the 16GB 1333MHZ Ram for half a price...
ITS ABOUT TIME
Still better than 2019 models.
finally, you uploaded.I have waited for too long.
Yep, I'm going to do it tomorrow!
About bloody time!
Stay healthy Jonathan!!!
been wait for a while. Thanks for the upload
I hope you feel better Jon or John
Ah, alright. I assumed two of the same would have been optimal but wasn't sure about two with completely different hardware. Thanks!
I didn't see the commercial, but i'm going to thumbs up anyway just cause your awesome. :P
Hey Jon, I have never heard of this. Thank you.
Nice Video very Impractical in m opinion, I Installed a 1 TB HD in my 17 MBP 2 years ago and have never ran into storage problems. It performs very fast in my opinion and until they have 1TB SSD Out and down to the price of a 1TB HD I wouldn't even consider this option. Being "Super Fast" is inconsequential compared to having a large Storage Drive and Ram. The Ram upgrade was the only smart practical thing I saw in all of this. Just my Opinion but nice instructions.
The optical drive is where you put your cds in. This comes at the expense of loosing that capacity.
since u installed ssd's in ur macbook pro, how many years do u think you could get out of it, knowing the write limit isnt the greatest? sweet video btw, glad seeing someone has finally ramped up a macbook pro to top speeds
I don't even know why I watched this video but damn very informative and relaxing haha good job!
Your right it was the negotiated link speed. Turns out that both sata ports are run of the same intel controller on the sandy bridge processor and are both capable of a full 6gbit
I got 4 in Raid on my gaming PC it is almost at 2 gig read and write haha I dont even see the BF3 load screen it just goes.. Love it
dude benchmark this badass!
The matte with higher res screen option that can be found on the Apple online store.
Gotta love some spudge. I’m Rockin a 2012 mbp in 2020 😂
Depends on your "better". An SSD is superior in almost any way to a normal mechanic hard drive. Faster, reliable, are just some of it's characteristics. It's even better if you link it up in RAID because both discs work at the same time, and you can "add" the read/write speeds; like this guy did on the vid. So yes, it's better if you don't care at all about using cds (you can always buy an external reader); but I would just replace the normal hard drive with an SSD to keep things cleanand simple
In the 2011 models some were SATAII and some were SATAIII, it just depends on what batch you got. They are now all SATAIII
I might try this on my normal MacBook. The risk of an ssd failing these days is pretty low.
My favorite video series :)
upgrading a MacBook Pro LIKE A BOSS!! :D
yes. if you have a 2.5inch hdd in your system then a 2.5inch ssd will work. And the MacBook Pro 2010 uses a 2.5inch ssd so yes it will work. Use something like a drive cloner to get your entire hdd onto your ssd
No, the standard MacBook Pro (non retina) is user serviceable. However, Apple may require you to reinstall the factory hard drive before sending it in for warranty repair.
it may be the fastest mac book in the world but this is the slowest video uploads in the world haha, i know you busy Jon but i completely forgot you were still doing this
Great video, great details and specs. Awesome vid compared to the tons out there Jonathan. Thanks for sharing it ;)
beast! keep at it jonathan
works like a charm
Hey Jon did you notice any difference with the battery life? Great video man!
Jonathan, where did you learn all these computer tricks, especially when installing software?
It's smart to put the HDD in the optical drive spot, if you choose to keep both. In that way the HDD is closer to the fan. Because a SSD usualy runs cooler than a HDD
That thing is a BEAST!!!
good point! i didn't actually even consider that option
John you're the man !!
No I think it just means that both of them share the storage of a file. Like for example if you have a movie file, it splits it up so half the movie is in 1 drive and the other half on the other. If one drive fails, then your movie file is screwed. Same with the Mac OS X operating system, if one fails then it'll be missing half the data and will be pretty much useless unless you reformat it.
if you are referring to the retina macbook pro, then no, since apple sautered everything to the board. And if you mess that up its a new macbook for you. However on the refreshed 13 and 15 inch models you can, since it is just some upgraded parts and the same architechure. sorry if there are spelling errors and i hope it helped
i am planning on installing the Samsung 840 Pro in an external Gtech enclosure first, pulling out the 100GB 5400rpm. Then i will clone the boot drive probably using TimeCapsule in a recovery mode. I believe you can also get a $20 cable and hook up the bare SSD drive to an external USB 2 or 3 connector if you don't have an external enclosure... The 840 Pro has a 5 year limited warranty and although i was thinking about the brand new Crucial M500 but it just had a 3 year warranty.
feel better bro!
data doubler. interesting. getting this now for my laptop.
Thanks your a life save, I wish you the best with your health. cheers!
actually no, it does not void applecare... obviously, however, apple won't cover the aftermarket parts but all you have to do is keep the original parts... As for the 90 warranty I'm not so clear on, but it really only covers hardware defects/manufacturers defects.
RAID 0 splits the information in half so it takes advantage of both drives. This means that there will be always the same amount of information on each drive, half of the total. Once one of the drives is full you wont be able to put more information. This will happen first for the smaller disk. So your total maximum capacity is double the capacity of the smaller. 256x2=512. What you need to do is to get another 512 GB drive, as similar as possible to apple's and do the RAID 0 again to get 1 TB.
