    I love both the Kenwoods
Wonder what made the 830 worth ten more.
    😉

830 is a double conversion superhet vs. 820 single conversion. The double conversion arguably has better image filtering and higher gain without instability. I personally think 820 has a bit higher gain, but that could be just my units.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to dip my toe in the water next week with an 820, I hope. An 830 seems hard to come by

    I am stoked!
My first 820 arriving within weeks.
Sorry to bother you, I'm trying to locate crystals for fixed channel ops.
    Have any idea?

Hello. The 820s is unique in this sense even when compared to the 830s. It has receptacles for 4 crystals, which, together with a band switch, gives you 9x4 = 36 fixed possible channels, 4 per band! In comparison, the 830s has only one fixed channel per band. The formula for the crystal frequency is 5.5 + band(MHz) - operating frequency in that band(MHz).. example for 14300mhz you'd need 5.5 + 14.000 - 14.300 = 5.2 MHz. The crystals are supposed to be HC-25/U holder format and they should fall in the range between 5 and 6 MHz. These are difficult to come by. Your best bet is eBay. I would make a "jigigdi" to convert SMT crystals which are cheap galore on mouser or digikey to HC-25/U holder..

      Thanks bunches.
Yes, most of that info is info. is from the manual. I'm looking for Xtals in the 5.450-5.486 range. I'll check those sources
