One feature of his style I can see (and hear) that is still in place is his use of barring.
Greg obviously knows how to sweep-pick and uses the technique, but I like how he usually prefers to play two notes at the same fret on two adjacent strings. Both notes are fretted with the same finger.
Definitely helps to create a more angular and less predictable sound than straight-up-and-down arpeggios
Much like Michael Lee Firkins (can we have a transcription, pretty please!) and Ritchie Kotzen, Greg quickly abandoned the neo-classicalisms and ploughed his own unique furrow!

      I've taken lessons with Greg.
As you said he is big on same-fret-adjacent-string, but the way he explains it its more by slightly rolling the finger rather than barring, so both notes don't ring at the same time.
Also he often hybrid picks that kind of phrase, which is another way to keep both notes from ringing at the same time.

    Greg Howe is 5'11
I'm 6'0, met him and chatted with him in NYC on many occasions. Richie Kotzen is just about the same height. Frank Gamble is 5'4. Paul Gilbert is 6'4, Malmsteen 6'1 he wears heeled boots, so he looks 6'3.

Saw Greg do a clinic at Corner Music in Nashville in like 88 or 89, right after his first Shrapnel record. Such a killer player and nice dude. Really wished Fender had tapped him to use their HM Strats when they reissued, that will always be the visual when I think of him.
Also his “fusion” records with Richie Kotzen are a lot of fun if you’ve never checked them

Greg never went the neoclassical route, he was paid to do Ascend in Japan, but he told me he would have never done that on his own. He doesn't care for that album. I love maniacal, he changed the subject completely. 🤷

He might not care, but IMO the album he did with Vitalij Kuprij, High Definition, is one of the best neo classical albums ever. His playing there is insanely technical, but just equally melodic. Very fun album to listen to it you're into the style. Highly highly recommend it.

Great album, but really showcasing Vitalij Kuprij's virtuosity on keys RIP. Greg did great on that album, and Vitalij played keys on Ascend. They were done back to back. Great collaborations.

Such an interesting style. Whenever I see him play it makes my hand hurt. His thumb almost goes down across the whole fretboard like he's going to snap the neck. Such a great player and nice guy.
