The plays tend to have professional opera singers, the movie used actors who had the ability to sing as well. The singing of the Movie is definitely not bad, but in general, the people in the plays are way more experienced singers. Just keep that in mind.
I think Canigula was a little inspired by Daaé... They're both shy theatre girls, and sopranos. Their love interests are both haunted by a sense of inferiority that leads to them making bad decisions. (Erik murdering for Christine Daaé, and Jeremy getting the SQUIP for Christine Canigula.)
