    You guys are a lot of entertainment on my end here in NH! I come from a long family of fishermen and am impressed with how you manage sea life! I know first hand it's not all a bowl of cherries but you both seem to be on top of things the best that anyone could be in given situations. There are no guarantees out on the ocean and my grandfather always said he respected the ocean each time he went out! Thanks for sharing your lives!!

      Hey there :) Thank you! Happy to hear you are enjoying our channel in NH! This lifestyle certainly has it's ups and downs but it's very rewarding overall. The ocean is a powerful force and we also give it our utmost respect. Things can change so quickly out here!

    Of all the sailing couples I’ve watched, I like you two the best, individually and as a couple. For me finding you was like meeting somebody for the first time and knowing within seconds that they’re special and that I’m hooked. And the more I watch you, the more hooked I get!
    Brooke, you’re so smart and beautiful and a such a hard worker, you’re a delight to watch in everything you do,..and Gary, I wish I was half as good looking and strong and clever as you are! And you’re both so adventurous! But what really impresses me is the affection you both have for each other, through all the ups and downs.
    The videography, the exploring, the fishing, the hiking, the sailing, the ocean, the two of you,..it’s all so good!! Thanks for being who you are and sharing so much of yourselves!

Whoa, those waves crashing over the bow, intense. It's so great being able to catch fresh fish, lovely. It must be challenging when storms are chasing you. Wow, that weather, thank the Gods you're both safe. Hey you guy's have done all you can for that bloke, if he keeps ignoring you then that's on him. You got to keep safe until it passes. How sad!! I feel sorry for those boat owners but it just goes to show how critical the right ground tackle is and how important it is to deploy it and monitor it continuously. I find it hard to believe that every captain wouldn't be tuned into the VHF during a storm like that!! I would be calling for help or at the very least some advice from other boaters if I discovered I was dragging. I'm a couch captain at the moment, but I'm planning for my wife and I to be out there with you all soon. Thanks for all the informative videos and congratulations on making it thru the storm safely.

      Hey John! Yes, extremely sad. Ground tackle is the best insurance. Seems like there may be more to the story with the monohull dragging. If anyone thought all sailing is rafting up and celebrating birthdays together, the 2nd half of the video sure proved your point, that it's not always like that... It really has to be heart wrenching to watch someone drag and lose their boat, knowing there's nothing you can do to help... Hopefully both boats won't require too much repair and can still be saved, both appeared to be mostly intact, but it takes a lot more than a look around the outside to determine the true extent of any damage... Sure glad you guys made it through unscathed along with Delos and Calico Skies...

    You guys handled your planning and preparations like true professionals. Loved the way you guys hung in there with your anchor watches, checking ground tackle and simply being ready to take action if needed. Sorry for those that touched ground, but the sea is fickle, and the sailor that does not leave an anchor out to leeward soon feels its wrath. Both those boats were off the shore within days. I think they door skinned the hull breaches on the monohull, dragged it off the beach and hauled it out. That's why we call them MexiCAN and not Mexican't. The monohull did not have an operating motor and apparently was the guys third time visiting the shallows there. Living at anchor
    for 25 years
    up to 72 knots in a blow;
    when boats are a'draggin'
    before you shed tears
    jump in a dingy&go;
    upwind of the dragger
    drop a hook then drift back
    and throw them a line at their bow,
    a Bruce always sets,
    and a Danforth's usually better
    but if perhaps you don't like them
    say "I just dropped a plow."
    I have a Bruce in each roller,
    2) lil 25 lb Danforths,
    and a fat 35lb Danforth w/ fat chain,
    I keep a 50 lb Danforth
    rigged to hurl when it howls
    in case something ever breaks
    in 50 knots and 3am rain,
    a huge grappling hook
    for fetching dropped chain,
    and a small one
    for fetching dropped lines.
    If I seem a bit paranoid
    forgive me my friends,
    I've seen plenty of poor souls
    on the rocks
    come morning time.

    Hey Guys! First, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Merritt Island! I don't know how long you guys are going to hang out in Penasco. Right now, real time, you guys are in primetime El Norte wind season. Watch for High Pressure systems moving across California into Nevada and Utah, a day or so after, it will be ripping! I have seen winds over 70 knots and waves from hell! Shared this with Bill and Grace.
    Plan your weather window, and have optional safe harbors. You can have some awesome downwind runs. Be safe, blessings and Fair Winds...

    They were talking about Javier starting August, and by September first it was moving north and apparently hit the western coast of Baja by around the 15 September. I've heard Delos sailed up into the Sea of Cortez and is still there now ! I've also been informed that it is legal for a "Technician Ham" Brian is a tech, to get on HF and talk to us. We are on 7.192 starting at about 1500 zulu with what we call early birds, official relays start at 15:30, weather just after emergency check ins so probably right around 16Z in the morning.. If we know where you are we try to get really specific on our weather, but it varies day to day with different Hams reporting. Tony on Tuesday is one of the best, he lives in San Philipe. Espanol is Bueno. Its called the Chubasco Net. The most gnarly huricane I've seen a boat go through was Captain Rick Moore channel, worth watching, lots of tips, class 4 ! A special anchor set up in videos prior to the actual hurricanes ! Two Anchors and two class four hurricanes actually. The Columbian Navy was so impressed they gave him a medal ! He was the only boat that didn't end up against the shore somewhere !

    Are the boats dragging because their anchors are not heavy enough?

    • @SailingOneLife

      In most cases, boats drag because their ground tackle (anchor and chain) are either not sized properly for the boat/conditions or because they do not have enough scope (chain:depth ratio) out.

    150’ of chain in 14’ of water is not 10:1 scope. Your bow roller is at least 4’ above the water, so you were actually at more like 8:1 scope - still adequate, but maybe not as conservative as you were thinking it was.

    • @SailingOneLife
      @SailingOneLife  Год назад

      I was using round numbers to simplify the concept. When I dove the anchor and grabbed our 150' mark in the water, you'll notice our bridle wasn't on yet. We were at about 10:1 when all was said and done. Minimal holding force returns after 10:1. The additional height above the waterline is a factor I'm very aware of, but for us it would actually be the height to the cleats that the bridle attaches to rather than the bow roller. (Essentially the same height but could be different on another boat.) 👍
