To this day, there is NO other game that has sound design as terrifying as SH1. Even SH2 doesn't come close. So many of the "tracks" give off this cold, dead feeling; it's something that can't really be described, and is only understood while listening to it. The anxiety some of these tracks induce is mind blowing.

As it was presented anyway. I would take a continuation of the series made by the original members of TS over Silent Hills any day of the week. Any day of the fucking year. No shade on Kojima, a lot of his stuff is batshit crazy in a good way, but I'm not so sure Kojipro wackiness is the way to bring the franchise back to glory.
We surely haven't seen the last of Silent Hill, the name holds too much cultural cache to throw away. I just hope whoever gets the next crack at it understands what Team Silent was going for originally and takes the series back to it's roots. Probably not gonna happen that way, but I can be hopeful, eh? Same with Metal Gear and Castlevania for that matter. Kojima and Iga aren't coming back to those franchises and they're worth too much money to do nothing with, so the best we can hope for is that whoever gets them next understands why fans like those games in the first place.

My mom actually recommended I rent that game from Blockbuster back in the day. The beginning where you go down the alley and the camera did that wavy motion thing kind of blew my mind, going back to that design. The crudeness of the technology led to the grit of the game. Going through the school and the ghost of the children. Anytime a radio statics out I always look around for creatures. The sound alone just so good. The town and the "open" world feel about it was just something I had not experienced in a realistic sighting before. The fog really added to it. Every Wednesday here in Ohio is national weather service test day at noon..not a time that goes by that I hear that tornado siren and think of silent hill. A few years ago I went to Westin West Virginia on a ghost hunt at Trans Allegheny. The town had a curfew siren that goes off several times throughout the night..talk about adding to the mood.

It's obvious that a lot of reviewers didn't play the game when it released and has no idea of what the gaming market was like back then. They try to be incredibly smart but end up sounding stupid because they compare a 20 year old game with the new games on the market.

I like your mention of the game knowing when to scale back on the sounds. As awesome as Akira's work on the series undoubtably is, I feel like they got worse at this with each entry, being particularly a bit obnoxious in Silent Hill 3 (my otherwise favourite). In that game, almost any enemy you come across, even if you've seen it ten times before, will trigger boss music. It's a little bit much. The second entry did that a bit, but not as much - same with the fourth. The first, got the balance right from the beginning. A balance I wish they'd kept to. Minor fault for sure, but worth a mention I think.

I just played it for the first time and beat it a few days ago (bad ending lmao) AND YES. It has a twin peaks vibes. I immediately picked up on it. How can you not think twin peaks when the main character is named HARRY and Lisa's last name is GARLAND. I'm surprised Dale Cooper wasn't referenced or maybe I missed it. I thought it would play like resident evil but it is actually much better, from controls to the story. Such a good game and quite the experience. It's unsettling and at times scary with a few tasteful jump scares. The music is on point. Truly one of the best games ever made.

I just beat this game for the first time a few days ago. No clue why it took me so long, I've had a physical copy since I was a kid and I've started multiple playthroughs, but never wound up getting past "Nowhere" for one reason or another. Absolutely fantastic game, it still holds up extremely well, and honestly the PS1 graphics really add a lot to the creepy atmosphere of the game. I would turn off the setting in Duckstation that corrects the wobbly vertices and textures whenever it transitioned over to the other world, so those parts would be all warped and fucked up looking compared to the fog world, really adds to the surreal vibe.

I agree on sound, and it's a big part why David Lynch and John Carpenter are so effective, they've a control over sound and music in a way very few filmmakers and game developers ever do. David Lynch as a sound designer he's brilliant and unique. Silent Hill series was also truly unique in sound design. One of my biggest gripes of both Kōnami and Sony is all remakes that happen and don't happen there's 2 series Kōnami should do:
Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake from the Japanese home computer console the MSX2. Another is Silent Hill the first one. They should assemble same sound design. 1 big problem with Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes on Gamecube was rewriting and redubbing the dialogue, reimagining cut scenes like it's Matrix, and changing a lot of the soundtrack and sound design. MGS TTS is graphically amazing with ability to jump railings and aim in 1st person. I still prefer Sony PlayStation version. However, the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil is vastly superior to the Sony PlayStation 1 original. All that said, a remake of Silent Hill would be the remake most of all I'd want. It was a late Sony PlayStation 1 game and the game was more ambition than what the Sony PlayStation 1 at 32 bit 3D capabilities could honestly handle because 2-4 look amazing for PS2. I'm a Metroidvania player, I prefer gameplay and rarely do I care about dialogue and story, Heavy Rain is one of the worst non game interactive movie ever made. Silent Hill is one with gameplay and puzzles and is totally unique, totally surreal and horrifying similar to the Black Lodge in the 12 Sycamore Trees circle in Glastonbury Grove in Twin Peaks. I'm replaying it now and thinking about buying the 2nd one on disc for PS2.

It's incredibly interesting to hear how much influence David Lynch's work had on the series. I don't think I would have placed it unless it was pointed out, but now that it has been, it's fairly obvious. Especially in the stunted vocal work. That's why I think in the remaster, Troy Baker simply didn't get it. I'd be curious to find out if he's much of a Lynch fan at all. They'd have been better off getting Kyle MacLachlan and Chris Isaak. 😱🤣

Silent Hill is one of the greatest and scariest psychological horror video games of all time. The story, music, images, astomphere, tension, direction, and cinematography was absolutely and positivity horrifying and terrifying. 😰😱 It really identifies and analyzes the boundaries between reality and fiction as it questions your sanity. It was decent. To this day I still play it and I consider it a classic. Silent Hill is a true blue ultimate masterpiece in horror gaming. Konami created a classic that will be in our hearts forever. I first played Silent Hill 1 back when the PS4 was about to come out, and I was shocked at how a game that looked this terrible by today’s standards was this terrifying. Still one of the scariest games I’ve ever played. The game holds up INCREDIBLY well. And the way the map works is just the coolest thing ever to me, how it automatically updates to point out broken doors, obstacles, and noteworthy points of interest. So much they did right, way back in the day. This game has my utmost respect.

I liked this video, because you actually mention the occult, sick black magic shit in the game. It's funny, how the original SH is the only one that accurately touches on those themes, talking about gyromancy, the story of a girl being ritualisticaly tortured, the actual sommuning of an actual demon, the whole plot of a town being involved in it, which, given its connections with Twin Peaks, is very revelatory of 70s "Satanic Panic", which is very real, and goes on to this day. If there is a God, there is most certainly an opposite natural force for evil, and shows like Twin Peaks, or almost all David Lynch movies talk about. I recommend anyone checks out Jay Dyer's analysis of David Lynch works. he also has movie analysis on RUclips where he decodes Hollywood movies.

I know most people claim SH2 to be the best on series, but damn, SH1 is my favorite one. There's something about this game that still unsetles me in a way that I can't really explain. Even the limitated graphics gives SH1 a "gritty aura", something "dirty" to look that contributed to make it even scarier.
Almost like what we see in the OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre, sometimes the limitations can be a blessing.
