    The soundtrack also blurs the boundaries between real world music with the orchestra and the dream world with synths, or with orchestra imitating synths. Mixing both was a great idea.

      Yeah the music is incredible.
      I just wish @Jack didn't play it in the background while he's talking because it made it hard to focus -- epic music kept making it impossible to hear or process what hes saying. Try listening to 1:34 -- music is too intense and drowns out his message.

    This movie is arguably Christopher Nolan's opus which is quite a feat considering his impressive filmography (admittedly, I am more partial to the Dark Knight trilogy but that's just me). Make no mistake, this movie definitely deserves that accolades and praise it receives and it's definitely one of my favorite movies of all time.

    The first time I watched this film I didn’t understand it but I was very intrigued by it, since then I’ve watched the film five times and I’ve been trying to analyze it. I remember talking to my uncle about it and I told him about how I was kind of annoyed that everything was explained through diolouge and that Nolan didn’t try to be visual, he then told me that visual storytelling wouldn’t work in this type of film and that every second of diolouge was very crucial and fundamental to the plot and after watching the film as much as I have, I can see what he meant.

      I get what you and your uncle were saying but inception does have visual storytelling in it, at the very beginning during the mission dom checks his watch to see the time, it then cuts to the first level of the dream and time begins to slow down for the watch and when it we cut back to the second level time speeds up, we also get shown dream within a dream before it’s even explained, as well as projections, gravity altering etc… inception does have exposition but it’s used well and mixed with a lot imagery

    I always thought that since he and mal only died once on the train track (and they were like four levels deep), she was right and it’s Michael Caine incepting Leo out of his dream world by think he’s doing a heist, which is exactly what they did to Cillian Murphy.

    Inception is a brilliant movie. Your right, people do criticise it, but thats the price you pay for being an excellent auteur filmmaker. Whether its Stanley Kubrick or Quentein Tarantino, auteur filmmakers always have their work scrutinised. Sometimes unfairly. Can't wait for Tenet.

    I’m pretty late here 😂. I have mixed feelings about this movie. It’s a great action adventure movie. Lots of clues, metaphors, double meanings. Great rewatch value. I just think the dream sequences were a bit drab. The dreams didn’t feel like dreams. They just felt like movie scenes. And maybe this was the point, but then what’s the fun in that?

  • @dessfred
    @dessfred 5 лет назад +3

    Weird comment by the end. Of course, no movie are perfect. And I get the feeling Inception is not the kind of movie to get much backlash. I may be biaised though, Inception is still in my personnal top 5 favorite film of all time.
    The only critique I get about Nolan is that he always make ambiguous endings. But it's totally the point. When you think about a movie or a tv show ending years after seeing it, that's because it was better than average.
    In the case of Inception, who cares if Cobbs was dreaming all along? We still got a hell of a ride watching some of the best action sequences in cinema.

    I'll always remember Inception as wasted potential. The first half of the movie has two grand surreal set pieces, halfway through you can tell Nolan gets bored with this so the next settings are boring realistic places like a chateau. And, of course, dullards think this simple story is the most complex and mind-blowing thing ever.

    I don't think this movie refers to drugs specifically, but it more generally shows how obsession can influence how one acts and thinks. This is reflected through Dom's obsession with his family, and how his obsession with them (but especially his wife) almost costs him the opportunity to see them again.
    You don't think clearly while under the influence of an obsession or addiction. Whether your vice is your loved ones (Like Dom), drugs, or something else doesn't matter. Much like how the Montage Theory suggests, the film is cinematic translation of how obsession can drive a person, using the obscurity of the dream sequences as manifestations of Dom's subconscious being clouded by his goal to see his wife, and less so his children.
    Not to say that the entirety of the movie's events exist in his subconscious, but they serve to complement it. But then again, the whole point of Inception is to leave the true ending ambiguous.
    Regardless, great video and great channel. Keep it up! :)

    Hi Jack, great video as always. I like how you focused on Leo coming to terms with his loss and learning to move forward with his life and live in the present, I think that’s the most powerful arch of the movie. The whole “is he still dreaming” argument is increasingly unclear by the fact that his top totem makes 0 sense (I can explain why if you don’t understand what I’m saying). I’m still unsure of whether or not this was intentional by Nolan or not.

  • @MiaTyrnfae
    @MiaTyrnfae 5 лет назад

    I'd have to go find where Nolan said it, but the top at the end wasn't supposed to make you question whether Cobb was still in a dream or not, but rather symbolize that he had finally left Mal's top, and by extension, Mal herself, behind to instead be with his children who are real. Of course, via death of the author people are more than welcome to disregard that and interpret the end however they want, but I figured I would point that out.

    The brilliant play of three acts. One of my all time favourites and whilst the word genius is thrown around lightly. Nolan is just that a true genius.
    What makes the film so brilliant is the lightest of touches it does in just the right junctures. In a Jungian context the concept of synchronicity and the summation of actions and as you rightly put the idea of real actions and outcomes is true.
    In David Lynch’s Lost Highway the protagonist of film is asked about videos and his statement put this film perfectly, “I like to remember things my own way”.
    Thank you for your insight , this film has great significance and importance for me.

    I have not seen this movie since it first came out. After 10 years, there is still the question of the ending and if Cobb is dreaming. As I was thinking about this and watching it again and again, I started to feel that Cobb was in Saito's dream. He is way to present and involved to be just hiring Cobb. I like the theory that Mal was right, Cobb didn't know he was still dreaming and the Michael Caine character hires Saito to bring Cobb back to reality. From that perspective, Saito's presence makes sense. Using Fisher kept Cobb focused and he did not suspect he was in Saito's dream. Cobb also was using Mal's totem. According to the movies rules, it should not work for Cobb, only for Mal. I also strongly suspect several members of the team were involved with Saito's plan.

    This isn't Nolan's best film (that honor goes to The Prestige IMO) but Inception is my favorite Nolan film. It was actually kind of nice to see someone tackle Inception from the angle that there WAS a real world in it. Personally, I don't think so but, as Movies With Mikey points out, the ambiguity is on purpose and thus unsolvable.
    The point about just dreaming with no action to back it hits home for me. The way I did with my writing until this decade illustrates its truth to a tee. Thanks for this video!

    Inception was the film I saw that broke the spell that Nolan was weaving. It turned out that he wasn't actually good at explaining... he just... Explains... A lot... Most of his movies are just that. A long series of exposition dumps. And the fact that people call his films complex and hard to get always perplexes me. Because the characters don't ever shut up about the meanings of everything in it. Heck... In Memento he even color coded the scenes to make it super clear what he was doing.
    It's one of the main reasons I liked Dunkirk. In it the characters stopped having long poetic speeches and for once we were allowed to get to the conclusion without help.
    And if Inception is indicative of his dreams... He has some damned boring dreams.

    Inception is about a husband's sorrow and grief that he cannot mend his wife's trauma about her sexual abuse as a child ...
    Her decaying childhood home (they call it their home), the locking of memories and secrets, the broken glass/things etc. etc.
