Personally, as I yardie myself, I see it from both ways as well. Right now, I am in agreement with you guys as I have decided to stop sending money to anyone ah yard since this year. When i did the math on how much i sent down last year, I CRIED. The crazy thing is that right now, I can't even call one of those persons I sent money to and ask them for some money.
Some Jamaicans who have immigrated elsewhere are much to blame for the expectations of people living abroad. There are people who go home, having maxed out their credit card or borrowed money, and show off. They give the impression that the streets are paved with gold elsewhere.
I heard a lot about that. Thank goodness my family is not like that. If you give them something they happy. If you didn’t bring anything for them. That’s ok to. My family so glad to see me. Mom will say just come home. We want to see you.
As a Caribbean National, I send a barrel home to me family 4X per year. I know it is extremely helpful, especially to the elderly family members, who exist on limited funds. Basic toiletries, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant etc cost 6 X the price on my Island than in the USA, With that said if I can aid my family save or spend on something else - I send barrels. I coupon to defray costs.
@RAINBOW-lx6wd first find a shipping company that ship barrel to the destination you want it to go ask how much to ship. Then ypu purchase a barrel and start buying stuff and start to pack the barrel when it's finish packing called back the shipping company to come collect the barrel pay fee get your receipt.
If anyone asks you😮 for anything whether from Jamaica or otherwise, evaluate who that person is to you, is there any value in their friendship or if that person just wants to leech off you!
It is a cultural thing. In the Caribbean we help others. Yes… some ppl can over do it…. But sharing when we have it, is what we do. Not everyone will get the opportunity to travel abroad to “foreign”. Lots of us go back and show off and pretend like we have it… meanwhile we are having it rough. So yes ppl will ask. We are not the only ppl culturally who operates like this. The Mexicans, Chinese, Phillipinoes etc all send money home to help family and their community. The barrel was a thing in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s when things were harder to get in the islands. Now it is easier to get certain items. Yes…. When oil, washing soap etc is purchased in bulk it is cheaper. But as I said certain items were harder to get and barrels were cheaper to ship then. And as a caribbean person, you never know what can happen in a country where you were not born…. So we tend to help our community and family because we never know when we can be shipped back. It is also not everywhere or everyone believes that Americans have money. Ppl can see clearly the struggles black Americans have in the US especially.
It’s a cultural thing period. My family lives well in Ja and my Aunt who is the matriarch of the family will pack 4 barrels and ship. Please note that all the non perishables etc are sold on the shelves of supermarkets. No it’s the fact that the items that are in the barrels are divided or shared with families, friends and in between! I don’t believe shipping of food items back is a big deal now. This was a practice done in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Right, I send a barrel every year I start pack from Jan and when it's full I will send it, I will definitely send money back home to my family but I am not gonna go broke to send it. However the boasting of our people and hyping makes people see you with stuff and want it, it's the illusion we put on as of we have it going on to send. Also thr credit cards option we have over here makes things a bit easier and we over do it with hyping but they don't know we using credit card that we have to pay back!!!. One thing I won't do is struggle to send money back home
I’m from Jamaica, and I’ve shared my journey on getting to FIRE on RUclips, and people back home got the impression that am rich. They don’t understand that when you have assets and investments you don’t have cash all your money are in investment vehicles.
The average two bedroom apartment in the USA IS $1200.00 per month. This does not include utilities. It is not easy living in the USA. Taking the train standing on a platform for a long time in the winter time. Paying back student loans trying to make ends meet. It is not easy.
I dont know what part of town you live in but the average 1 bedroom apartment in most cities across the states is $1500 or more. Where the hell you get $1200 for a 2 bedroom?
I am a Trinidadian and I totally agree with everything you all are saying and I have experienced ingratitude from my family they are all gimme, gimme people
I come from a really poor family in the US and I've worked hard to break the cycle of poverty and am blessed to live comfortably. I'm disciplined with money so that I can also retire comfortably and have money for a rainy day. Some of my relatives have complained that it's not fair I have a lot more money, and I point out that I worked 3 jobs in college and graduated with honors, spent my 20s working 60+ hours weekly, then went back to grad school while working and again graduated with honors, now in my 30s with a great income and am once again taking classes for another salary advancement. And all the schooling I've done, I've had scholarships and grants and paid the rest out of pocket. I have to let them know I make more simply because I've worked harder, and I deserve it! Not to mention, I live on a budget still and I always will, I don't just throw money away. If someone wants to "learn how to fish" I'll help them with advice, but I'm not interested in "giving away fish" for a day
I swear I was just saying the black tax is also real! Us African Americans often feel the need to help our family too. We just stop the foolishness (well some of us) because we know they had the same opportunities but didn’t want to make the sacrifices! They think opportunities mean easy and it’s not! It’s often dress up as hard work!
@AroundthewayFinance 100%, my work ethic put me where I am today. My relatives who are stuck in poverty have made a lot of horrible choices to get them there, and the majority are also lazier than a sack of bones. That's the sad truth, I have enough relatives that don't even have jobs but have kids, rely on government handouts, and the audacity to ask me for money
I been called a bruke foreigner 😂 i dnt even care. They would rather me take from me and my children's mouth so they can have weed money. I THINK TF NOTTTT
His family watching this. I help my family out. Nothing wrong with helping them out. They also don’t expect me to do it. Most are grateful also. I grew up seeing my grandparents who never left Jamaica helped out their family and the community. They were farmers also. I also get people begging you
I don’t get the barrel thing either. However, I think some people start packing a barrel in June-July to send it home for Christmas. I think sending the money is better. You pay to fill the barrel, you pay to ship it, they have to pay to pick it up and then pay someone to transport the barrel to your home. I’m Jamaican and I really don’t get it either.
Another comment said that sending barrels started in the 70s and 80s when it was cheaper to send a barrel and the items that were being sent were much costlier on the islands than in the U.S. I think nowadays sending barrels makes less sense if the items are available on the islands much cheaper than in the U.S. The only thing with sending money is you never know what people will spend it on, they could gamble, buy drugs, etc so you have to be sending money to responsible people.
I agree with you Katonya. When I lived in Jamaica I never got a barrel from overseas. I live in Canada now and I don't send barrels down because I would rather send the money for my relatives to buy the groceries because I really don't see how it is cheaper from the barrel. Sometimes you even have to send the money to clear the barrel. It does not make sense. I will bring a few gifts in my luggage when I visit. If the person visit me, I will buy few things for them but sending a barrel is not something that I would ever do. It is only cheaper if you can pack the barrel with free groceries😂
I watched two videos of people packing barrel. It cost them at least $65,000 at whalf. Not included how much it cost to pack the barrels. Both said never again.
I think Jamaicans beg too much...I know a jamaican female on my job who borrowed some money from me..we both agreed the pay back date and she never paid it back..She never even mention it...I am finish lending people money...
What some people do is buy thing when it on sale and pack the barrel if you spend $500 to pack a barrel that $500 cannot buy the amount of thing that's in the barrel !! A jumbo barrel can hold up to 80 pounds of rice , 5 or mor bottles of oils plus many more things . Some thing you do not need to sent . Some family need it and need the help, some don't they will just try to drain you .
I sent two barrels just from couponing. My family really appreciated it especially because I’ve not been in the USA for long. One barrel contained personal items and household stuff like gain, tide, dove, deodorant etc. The other had food items .I always watched the couponing videos and learned how to do it so that I could help my family.
Every one situation is different i guess. So i have my mom and daughter living in Jamaica and every paycheck i got every two weeks im excited to send money home to them praise god for his awesome blessings and for providing me with health and strength I’m eternally grateful. Other family members I send them money like a few times for the year.what I’m extremely grateful for is that as a black woman i came here found a white husband who if i don’t put my feet down he would send two times what we’re sending he’s the best. So if you can help out someone please do so. When you can and give what you can afford. And trust me on this one the money that you have left you will be surprised how much it stretches I’m prove that times and times again
I agree with you both 100%, many of them like to take it easy but they want everything they see. I looked at even the simplest thing. For example, trying to plant a vegetable garden but they complain about the price of vegetables in the market. 🤔🙏❤️🇯🇲🇨🇦
Ill never forget, i tried to help a guy friend get a job, i send him the job advert, fix up him resume. Couple weeks after that him ask me for money, didn't even tell me whether or not him apply for the job. I blocked him so fast kmt
There are many American families that stick together and help each other. Some of our kids start working in a supermarket, fast food restaurants and retail stores while in high school to save towards a car or clothes and such the like. No shame.
The practice of sending money and shipping barrels began back in the 1950’s when people from the Caribbean islands left their country in search of work. Some of them left behind spouses and children or parents to raise their children in their absence. They would then send money and ship barrels back to take care of the families back home. This practice has continued over the years, leading people to believe that all “foreigners” are rich and have no idea how hard we “foreigners” must work to attain what we have. There are those that are in great need, but on the other hand, there are those that feel entitled and their hands are always stretched out, palms out. This is a hot topic for many.
We agreed to send a certain amount every month to my husband's mom when he came over on a K1 visa. Then his step dad passed away and prices gone up, so he has increased the money he sends. Yet each month something else comes up, so we can't seem to get back to our agreed upon amount. He's the only son, so there is a lot responsibility on him. I respect him for what he's doing, but this adds up and is really slowing our plans.
Try to limit what you send. You’re giving up your own future security. My experience has been that people don’t appreciate it and actually resent the fact that you can help.
Food barrel ...... everything is there .....but if you send $400 to buy food, its going to be spent on other things not intended for then the begging/ asking start all over.
Great conversation! Just came across your channel. The Barrel situation, back in the day, yes! It was more affordable to ship food and clothing down to Jamaica. However, the cost of living have increased so much that the cost of living is on par with the cost of living in Jamaica. I spent $300 dollars on groceries in Jamaica, the same amount I would spend in the US for the everyday items. The cost to clear a barrel in Jamaica is an arm and a leg smh.
It’s cheaper to send a barrel of the person knows how to shop. First of all, the quality of goods are superior and lasts longer. For eg, a particular dish washing soap bought in bulk in Sam’s or one of those stores, could never be compared to the cost in Jamaica. You pay approx 3 or 4 hundred dollars and it’s delivered at your doorstep. At least that’s how it is for me. Toilet paper, bull rice, flour and oil will serve an half a year. If you have small kids in diaper there’s a way better bargain buying it in the USA. It has always worked out for us, we buy in bulk to save money. I promise you, total cost for the barrel and her the same items at that quantity in Jamaica. You have to be smart to note the savings
I sowed seeds for 13 years in Jamaica. I lost the house I was building in the hills bcuz they chose to not reciprocate. I do not send sh*t to JA. You live and learn...💗💗💗
I Live in UK form47 year and i always send Barrels to Barbados God bless me to bless others But zBarbados Tax on items has gone up because they dont want you to bring things in the country
Kotonya you are right about the barrel. We have stopped sending from the UK. It’s not cheaper than getting in Jamaica as to the receiver it’s free. You can’t get cheaper than free. No point comparing name brands as most Jamaicans don’t buy the same brands you would at home. The argument about sending money and the people them then might spend it on other things is nonsense. If you send grown arse people money for food and they spend it on something else, then that is on them and it is them fi suffer. If you send money again for that reason then you need to have a talk with yourself. Jamaicans are also buying clothes online like in foreign now so no need to send clothing . And when you go there just observe all the good good phones everyone has. That tells you everything.
Katonya/Kemar, Don't feel bad or obligated to give money to anyone. My husband is Jamaican and I am an American and one of the conversations we had in the beginning of our relationship was regarding loaning or giving money out. I don't loan money to anyone, how are we going to thrive if we constantly give when asked? That is a crab in the barrel mentality that plagues the black community and I do not fall for it..
@@NP-zs5uiI would like to believe that someone would marry based on love, not nationality. I met my husband here in America, and we fell in love and got married. Naturally, that's how it happens.

Yea I peeped that, I feel like she a mek the man mean to his peeps. Am not saying you can't put limit but she sound like she mean to her family and would want the man be that way
My families don’t ask pressure me for anything. They hardly ask me for anything. Most time I’m the one who wants to give them things. Even most of my friends don’t ask me for anything.
What you must remember is that sometimes the person who is sending the barrel will even send the money to clear it because they will say they cant afford to & they will just sort out the transportation themselves so at the end of the day it doesn't cost them anything really
I don't care what anyone says but I will always help my people. You never know what will happen to you.. You may fall in that same person,s hands you didn't help. Life is unsure my people.
@@roseabasi9190Yes helping for a need and some wants is reasonable. But over helping because of being over asked us overwhelming at times. But I agree to help family when you can But even in your American family you are not giving and giving and giving all the time
But sometimes it's a hardship for the person that is expected to send the barrel. It's not about helping people when I'm barely making it myself and you expect me to send you a barrel because I'm in the states. It's just an expectation that many Caribbean people put on the person living abroad.
Thanks for speaking the truth about the circumstances of relatives abroad. Many pretend that they are living in luxury, and that money come easy. That is why people use you without conscience. You train them to depend on you. Stop it
Bless up your self guys 🇯🇲❤️SOME TIME ITS SOME OF US OVERSEAS LIKE SAY I SEE PEOPLE TAKING PICTURES OF NICE CARS 🚘 ECT SOME FAMILY THINK THEY ARE RICH 🤑
Truth is, if you like the people in your lives, don’t loan them money. Loaning people money is the quickest way to lose friendship. If I have it to give, I will give but only if I think you really need it. I know Jamaicans in America who send money to Jamaica to pay peoples utility bills. I know people who send barrels to Jamaica only to have the receiver requested the funds from the sender to clear the barrel. We grew up poor in Jamaica but as children, we don’t really feel it because if my mother didn’t cook, we ate dinner next door. We sometimes went to school without breakfast and no lunch money, so I know how hard it is for some parents in Jamaica. But when we came to America the only way we can eat is to pay for it ourselves. We can’t go to the next door neighbor like in Jamaica. In America, you learn to value every dollar you make and it’s not easy to just give it away. There’s a saying if you give a hungry man a dollar, he’ll have food for a day, but if you teach him how to fish, he’ll have food for life. When you rob a bank or win the lottery, you can give away the money, but if you put your blood, sweat and tears into making that money, you earn the rights to be as stingy asf.
I talked with my Jamaican coworker about this. I was told that when they go home to try to explain how hard it is for them here in the states, they literally don't believe it. It's like warning your child about life experience, but they don't understand till they experience it themselves.
It is absolutely way cheaper to send a barrel to Jamaica than buying the food there. Yes some people may send money to buy the food instead but i highly doubt that they are going to send $150,000 JMD to say go buy food. We have been sending barrels for years and if it cost us 800-1000 CAD dollars to pack the barrel and ship it,, we normally pay about 40.000JMD to clear depending on what is in the barrel. No they don't charge per item and is a set price they charge for clearing food. There is no way you can use $200,000 to buy food to serve for a year in Jamaica. When we shipped is once a year and it serves for the entire year and we gave away from it. When sending barrel you have to be smart and know what to send , don't send barrel for show, think about the need and what works in your every day life. Barrell does work.
If u have kids back home it makes sense to send barrel because I’ll give example I want to send my kids a small box the size of shoe box with 4 outfits and two small shoes for my step kids they say it cost 100$ to ship and when it reach the mother will have to pay 100 or more to clear it from customs . Barely anything is made there except maybe food items so everything is imported it makes more sense I send barrel for 150$ and they clear it for 50$ and I can put rice and can foods and many thing’s clothes etc
I understand your confusion and it is valid - it is partially a cultural thing. Also people buy the items on sale and when the products arrive in the Caribbean they resell the products and make a profit. For some people that is a business. But there are also the lazy ones who just want you to send the barrel and also for you to pay on the other end for them to retrieve the barrel. There was a time - many years ago - when the items were not available in that overseas county/island so it made sense to ship. Born in Caribbean - so I know what I am talking about.
The barrel is a good deal for people in Jamaica, they are not the ones buying the goods. The food stuff are cheaper in the USA. People stock up on the sales. Especially buy one get one free. In Jamaica the supermarkets don't usually have weekly sales. Don't forget that the cost of clearing the barrel is not much due to the exchange rate of the USA or Canadian dollars. Furthermore, some Jamaicans living abroad are very resourceful and are connected with generous people, who are always donating to the less fortunate in Jamaica. Shipping barrels to Jamaica is not expensive. A barrel containg food & personal items doesn't cost much to clear. Barrels containg Commercial goods cost much more to clear. You wana see Jamaicans happy? Send them a barrel, with everything you can think of ! 😂😂💯🙏❤️🇯🇲🇯🇲🇨🇦🇱🇷🇧🇻
The barrel is not charged by weight it's a fixed price it works out much better I don't just put food, I put the things I might need that is much cheaper here, so when I saw the price in Jamaica, I was like it was astronomically high, so for example curtain rods, so it all depends on what you are doing.
Back in the early 90's a friend of my mine came home to Jamaica on vacation. He was flashing cash and riches here there and everywhere, his suitcases had that new cloths smell. Man rented big car and stayed at high-end resorts. One would think he was Bill Gates. Man gave away all his cloths as he gave the impression it was easy to come by. While in Jamaica money was not a problem for him. Then I heard after the vacation ended, he was back in Queens NY, begging people to help him pay the rent for his basement apartment. I never laugh so hard, even now we still laugh at him.
I am a witness of sending barrels and have done the math work. It is not cheaper. I now tell them I will send the money and you buy it.. It ends up 3 times more so when you divide it the product could be bought there..
Watched your video and read many of the comments. TRIGGERING topic. Metaphorically speaking…with our church, we decided how much we would give and to whom. That keeps us grounded. Those extra “giving” times they have at church are to emotionally evoke giving from those who don’t regularly give…so we don’t feel any guilt if we don’t participate every time the church asks for gifts (offerings). We know we give regularly so no guilt felt when we don’t give to every cause. Hope this makes sense 😜
Packing a barrel and sending it home to your family.. it is an old tradition 😂 It made sense back in the 90s and early 2000 because things will much cheaper. But now custom fees Just to clear the barrel is way too expensive. It doesn't make sense any more..And things are more modernized you can buy everything in the caribbean now..
Hey guys I live in Canada and I always send barrels this is 1 of the reason in Costco you can buy a pack of 3 body wash for $18 and Jamaica you buy 1 of the same $2000 Jamaican dollars if you understand what I’m trying to say love you guys god bless ❤
Same here, Belize born and Cali raised, and I totally agree with you, unless like someone said you're getting the items free and paying for shipping only. I send a barrel when I go Belize on vacation but for my personal needs. $150+ and up to ship the contents of the barrel, your time, gas, etc, cha man! And someone said if you send the money they use it for something else, cha! Thats the last they would've heard from me if they tried coming back, I don't lend out money period, I give if it's for a very good cause, school, career, or if you're down and out and your kids need food, I'm fortunate my immediate family is good, and they do not ask for anything, we help ourselves and when we go to Belize we show those that have supported us love.
Omg! This is the same scenario from my country Liberia, West Africa. I understand times are hard but some of these people just want you to send money so they can buy data on the phone, go to the club and have fun. As your wife said, takers will always take.
The Barrel concept is a misconception especially sending food is considered that it’s cheaper & they are getting more items & also it’s the hype that it’s coming from foreign.
Say it, that's why I love watching our video.Yall give us great advice and things you're talking about. It makes me think I never think of that. Now, if I ask someone for something, I'm a thing like. How much time are they gonna have to add to the stuff Time to work to get that money, and then if they do have, it does make sense.
I think the barrel babies was from a time people were travelling overseas in the 50s era and the expectation was that they would send back to their families which might include their own children. And lack of resources has kept it going.
Hi guys I send barrel back home to my family all the time the money you spend to pack , ship and clear the barrel will last long with the food item cause sometimes you get the item cheap abroad but it you send that money to buy groceries it won't last not even a month sometimes that my experience and i ship from the UK
I’m a giver and probably won’t stop, but the thing that irks me is the ingratitude. But I don’t mind, because the more I give the more I have to give. Plus there are some who truly appreciate and need it
I totally agree with everything Katonya say! I'm exactly the same. When i say you speak everything i preach all the time! The money, barrel, saving for your retirement to try to maintain the same lifestyle your have now, when you retired! You must put you 1st
The idea of the barrel back dates to the times when island folk or any immigrant for that matter, would assist their families in whatever way possible. Its not just a practice exclusive to Caribbean. They would ship usually food stuff, clothing and other items to alleviate cost for their families back home or to help them enjoy amenities that are not available. Back when it first started, I am sure that it made more economic sense. The practice just continued even if it is more expensive to do so now. Another reason people still do it is because they are limited in what they can bring when they do travel home or they are not able to travel to their homeland just yet but want to help. There will always be people that take advantage of situations, its up to the person being asked the favor or fielding the request to decide how they will respond.
Jamaicans can afford the basics. Problem is they don't want the basics. They all down there want to live like a rock star and party every night. I go to Jamaica and I am having a drink (beers) with a friend, then other people come buy asking me for a drink, they want Grey Goose Vodka which is 9K per bottle. When I refuse to give them, I heard after I left that they said I was broke and mean and if it was a woman ask me I would have given it her. Jamaicans are so entitled and unconscionable
Very interesting topic, Kemar and Katonya. I am on the side of you vuys. Sending a barrel is cheaper for whom....sender or receiver?? I don't get it. ❤
Hello my family “ The Bonnicks!! I Al ways like to watch you guys This topic speaks for a lot of us. I can definitely relate to this. And all that you guys are saying is absolutely true! Sometime or another we have to wise up. Some people will “done”you and then turn them back on you like nothing happened. Thanks for sharing this. It’s very helpful and needed to discuss.
They say its a insult to send them $100us they want at least$200.00 us and when you go out there they living better than us over here my family over there have a bigger house than me in america so you have to give to ho realy needs it i lurn the hard way ok much love❤
So true Kemar. Sometimes they ask for $100 and u barely could send $50 they call asking when u sending the rest. Sometimes they don’t even say thank you.
Last Saturday I was having a covo with my neighbor (we live in 🇯🇵 Japan for context) & I mentioned how the exchange makes sending money home difficult and she and her husband (they’re both surgery doctors) were shocked we send money to our parents. The husband asked where’s his money ? 😂😂 They were even more shocked that I send money to even my friends, neighbors and some of my parents church friends. I just send 30,000$ to 3 set of families and I know NEED and are HAPPY to get that 10gran. I’ll always support folks back home but I’m not wasting it.
I’m so glad I don’t care what people think about me because I grew up with “ beggars can’t be choosers “. If you need money from me you get what I give you. You don’t get to choose how much of my money you get.
It is cheaper. Check the amount of cash you spend on the food items, the cost for the barrel and to ship it. Check the cost for clearance at the wharf and transportation. Then compare the prices of the same items in the barrel and compare this you will see that it cost much to ship.
It’s cheaper for Jamaicans to send for rice and clothes shoes. My mum even brought a mountain bike back to Jamaica for a close friend. Tonya what you say does make sense. They have to travel to the wharf to get your barrel it all cost money.
Good conversation I have a lot of Jamaican friends here and they always send stuff back home or even Haitians I donate clothing etc and help as much as possible. But Kamar is like myself don’t share feelings but at my age now I learned to let it go cus it builds up and can explode at not so good time. So release those emotions by communicating and know it will work out, keep God in your lives if you don’t have Him please try Him out!!🙏🏾you will not go wrong….. again God bless y’all and keep y’all🙏🏾🙌🏾🤎

Basic toiletries, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant etc cost 6 X the price on my Island than in the USA, With that said if I can aid my family save or spend on something else - I send barrels. I coupon to defray costs.
Love this, especially for elderly on limited funds. That makes sense❤️
Hats off to you - all so true
Yes me aswell I find it really helpful aswelly family really appreciate it aswell and it save me sending money every minute to buy food all the time
Can u tell me the steps on how to send a barrel please ? It’s my first time doing it
@RAINBOW-lx6wd first find a shipping company that ship barrel to the destination you want it to go ask how much to ship. Then ypu purchase a barrel and start buying stuff and start to pack the barrel when it's finish packing called back the shipping company to come collect the barrel pay fee get your receipt.
I use to work in western union, the people that use to queue up on a Friday to send money to a loved one. The people back home are ungrateful!
Sharing what you have is what you do, love that.
@@thebonnickswow
Anyone paying $1200 must be living there forever

Yup! You know once you get that WhatsApp call what it’s about. SMH
@@DarthFurie Yes!! I have that experience also. On top of that they are demanding, badminded and badmouthed.
🔥🔥I stop sending my money there. These people have noooo conscience ‼️and wen they don’t get what they want they call u a BRUCK FOREIGNER🔥

I live on de Island of Grenada...DONT DO IT!!!!!!!! They will statrt an argument with u to not pay u back...its BAD!!!!!
How they gonna pay you back??

Exactly
Back in the 90’s the barrel was more practical and cheaper but now it’s not unless its an item that’s not readily available in that country
True talking my friend. Jamaican take kindness for weakness.

This happened to my husband and I when his father passed in 2020
Try to limit what you send. You’re giving up your own future security. My experience has been that people don’t appreciate it and actually resent the fact that you can help.
Food barrel ...... everything is there .....but if you send $400 to buy food, its going to be spent on other things not intended for then the begging/ asking start all over.
😅Crazy…
Absolutely
Makes sense
I sowed seeds for 13 years in Jamaica. I lost the house I was building in the hills bcuz they chose to not reciprocate. I do not send sh*t to JA. You live and learn...💗💗💗
Wow!!! Life is the greatest teacher.
I Live in UK form47 year and i always send Barrels to Barbados God bless me to bless others But zBarbados Tax on items has gone up because they dont want you to bring things in the country
You never lend more than you cam loose
Katonya/Kemar,
Don't feel bad or obligated to give money to anyone.

You have some good points. Some people in Jamaica have a mindset that living in the USA is easy and cheap.
What you must remember is that sometimes the person who is sending the barrel will even send the money to clear it because they will say they cant afford to
& they will just sort out the transportation themselves so at the end of the day it doesn't cost them anything really

Yes. You’re right. Instead of being grateful that you have loaned them money, I find that they resent the fact that you have it to give.
That's our culture we help each other.
We help without thinking. American culture is different.
You cannot help people be dependent on you. What if you die in an accident or something?

I talked with my Jamaican coworker about this. I was told that when they go home to try to explain how hard it is for them here in the states, they literally don't believe it. It's like warning your child about life experience, but they don't understand till they experience it themselves.
Sending barrels is good because the prices of food in Jamaica is very high especially oil rice and other food stuffs
So true 👌👌❤❤
That's true the Bible tells us "the love of money is the root of all evil".
Most cultures help each other!
This makes sense to let it work for the year and also to help others
Some. Of them are ungrateful. Too
You guys need to do a live with this kind of conversation so we can engage please I love these kind of reasoning
The barrel is not charged by weight it's a fixed price it works out much better I don't just put food, I put the things I might need that is much cheaper here, so when I saw the price in Jamaica, I was like it was astronomically high, so for example curtain rods, so it all depends on what you are doing.
Makes sende
Back in the early 90's a friend of my mine came home to Jamaica on vacation. He was flashing cash and riches here there and everywhere, his suitcases had that new cloths smell. Man rented big car and stayed at high-end resorts. One would think he was Bill Gates. Man gave away all his cloths as he gave the impression it was easy to come by. While in Jamaica money was not a problem for him. Then I heard after the vacation ended, he was back in Queens NY, begging people to help him pay the rent for his basement apartment. I never laugh so hard, even now we still laugh at him.
U all forget the cost of the barrel. I'm in St Kitts and when I travel I ship nothing back because it's not worth it.

FACTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!! YOU HAVE TO BE SELFISH WITH YOURSELF, YOUR CHILDREN, WIFE, AND BILLS!!!!
Perfect sense❤️❤️
I was born in Belize. Grew up in California. Sending the barrel is a waste of money. If you have relatives just send the money.
I really admire both of you. I like the respect you have for each other. You dont talk over each other
The Barrel concept is a misconception especially sending food is considered that it’s cheaper & they are getting more items & also it’s the hype that it’s coming from foreign.
Most Jamaicans are not able to afford the basic tings at times I have no issue with ppl asking for money it just depends on who and motives.
@valrowe1037.. It's cheaper for the receiver especially if they also are getting money to clear the barrel at wharf.
Real talk like this conversation love you both Blessings🙏
So true Kemar. Sometimes they ask for $100 and u barely could send $50 they call asking when u sending the rest. Sometimes they don’t even say thank you.
Pleas give Kemar space to speak, and to finish!!
The wife rules her husband.
Thanks for sharing. This is a real topic with our people. The thought than one is better off than the other and use them is bad !!!
So release those emotions by communicating and know it will work out, keep God in your lives if you don’t have Him please try Him out!!🙏🏾you will not go wrong….. again God bless y’all and keep y’all🙏🏾🙌🏾🤎
I'm always sending money Jamaica.. I don't have a problem with it .Giving someone a starts is the key 😂😂
That start never comes to an end..
@@ginapalmer2817 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Real talk ❤❤ you two love from 🇧🇧
If the barrel has food and clothe items in it it is cheaper to clear.
