I wish there were more car owners like this guy around. Like Matt said, it seems like when everybody modifies their car, they get (in this order) huge heavy wheels with the cheapest tire available, coilovers to slam the car to the ground and adjust the dampers as stiff as possible (because discomfort=performance), and finally as many bolt ons for the engine as possible, without regard to any supporting mods. This dude actually drives his car as opposed to just going to meets at sonic and roll racing on the hwy.
Watching the past few videos; people always pull over and let Matt (faster traffic) by. Its incredible. i hope one day to experience reasonable, intelligent, considerate drivers.
owner of this car, if you are reading this, thank you for doing proper suspension and tire modifications. i salute you for actually using your coilovers as specified.
This engine has about 90% of it's max torque at 1500 rpm. Slightly refined engine for the new 3 series has that at 1200rpm, that's insane! Soon they will be making peak torque at idle LOL
Matt, love this idea for the show!! Thrilled to hear you've experienced a lightly modded 335i probably 50-80hp over stock! Now how about +150hp/200tq sedan with a baby seat, or a 507rwhp/540tq convertible versions. Or even compare them to some v8 m3, and the SC'd versions! It's been a HUGE rivalry since 2008!
Great video. I can agree to many of his points first-hand, I have a 2008 BMW 535i with the same N54 engine and JB4/Intake mods but I also added a BOV/charge pipes and full straight pipes, definitely gives it that extra little edge and amazing sound. Most people do not expect these mods on a 5-series sedan, but it makes for a much better daily driver and the weight difference is actually very minimal from the 335i.
You know what I love about TST? No biases! Like for real, this dude just loves cars and appreciates every aspect of a car! Thanks for the entertaining reviews!
Third gear is special in this car. My E90 335 is tuned running the Cobb AP Stage 1+ Aggressive with Intercooler map blowing its sound out the BMW PE Exhaust. It will peak boost around 18-20 psi and damn, this car moves. I don't know if its my car specifically, but around 4400 RPM, it has this extra kick in the pants acceleration. Almost sounds like my tune is blowing a shot of air or fuel to make it burn hotter for a split second. It just sounds so amazing too. I get that roar of the PE exhaust, and the whistle of the turbo, and then this extra BBRRAAAAAAAAAAA BOOM as it kicks in 4400 PRM to 6000 RPM. What an awesome car to drive. Best part is that I can smoke most any sports car on the street but it just looks like a normal black 3 Series with tints. Very unassuming.
Absolutely perfect. Finally a guy who knows his stuff. For usable 'speed', these 335i's mostly need suspension upgrades, next to a simple stage 1 ecu tune.
I've owned an e92 330D for about a year. It's no 335i, that's for sure ... but it was a great car none the less. M-sport suspension, sattel braun interior with black headliner (just part of the M-sport package). I loved it. IMHO, it looks better than the new 4 series, but that's just IMHO.
detaart daaamn :o got a e90 320D myself, even for such a small engine i feel like it kicks pretty hard. but damn, you're packing over double the amount of torque in yours :D
Exata1337 It was a nice car. It was fast, but the character of the engine was very relaxed, even after chipping it. Even when you floored it, it was a very laid back car. Sure, it pulled pretty hard, but it seemed like it was never stressing the engine.
Great review! Picked one of these, 2010 with a manual gear box and the M Sport package with 55K miles for $23,000 back in October. Best purchase I've ever made. Suggest it to anyone who wants an All-in-One car.
This 335 is on point! I love the red interior and 6mt with nav! Like dude said that is rare. So hard to find one of those! Especially with the color combo you want!
I had one of these for for 6 years. Man what a great car. Before getting a evo or sti, try one of these out guys youll love it, its the perfect balancing of luxury and performance. Also with a little tune it turns into a straight monster! used 335 and 135s are the best deals ever. but you have stay on top of them ! and be able to do some mechanic stuff yourself if you can. but i know people with evo xs and stis and its the same deal. pay 2 play. but man was this car a monster. miss her to this day
Great review! My father has one of these and I can agree with everything you pointed out. Only downside is the occasional turbo issue but they're not bad. Great cars, the 6MT is well worth the search. Wakes up the car considerable amount compared to the paddles.
Ive noticed in Matts reviews, when he says smooth and silky in relation to the way the car is driving, and not the suspension, hes usually driving a german car
i used to own one of these in sedan form ... quickest car I owned, with the JB4, DCI, and FMIC. Too many issues past 100k, so I gave it to a family member and bought an F30 328I which is tuned as well. Still miss it though, great car and a great performance bargain under 20K, few cars can match it's performance, luxury, and daily drivability
I really like what he's done with this one, minus the M3 replica bumper (personal taste). The only other thing I'd add is a limited slip differential. AFAIK they sold all non-Ms with an open diff except for the 335is. Which is a shame because any regular 335i could benefit from it I think.
Cool video! I just bought an 2011 335xi E90 with an Automatic. Yep,an auto. I passed on an identical mileage 6 Spd E90 because something didnt feel right with it. I regret the Auto but love the car! Amazing in the snow and pretty quick with the Cobb tuner being the only mod so far. But I also have a 1995 E34 540i6 for when I want to row some gears!
Interesting to see the preview thumbnail of the 2-series next to the one for this video - it's like the 2-series is the natural successor to older 3 coupes, rather than the 4.
Haha funfun. I just dumped 15 grand in engine upgrades in my 335i (hybrid turbos, comp fmic, tial q, and dual oil coolers, dp's occ, oil therm, pcv, check valve, jb4 g5 + dual meth. 6spd manual 2007 e90 335i n54) Theres a bunch more goodies too :) 550hp 600tq at rear wheels. Murder blacked out. Very fun. Turns alot of heads!
After months of searching, found an 07 335i 6 speed manual and only 94k miles on it yesterday, and for $9.4k end of year sale at a BMW dealer, it was 1 hour away from me. I submitted the credit app and talked to a guy at the dealer that morning. Another salesman sold it 10 minutes before I got there. It had the nav too. It was beautiful. And gone right out from under me.
I all most considered one of these not to long about, but I couldn't find any in my price range with a decent amount of miles. And with BMW standing for "Broke My Wallet", I wasn't about to take any chances.
I cant believe how people pull over all the time to let Matt pass, so nice. Here in Germany noone does that EVER on a country road, you would just overtake them if there is an oportunity.
3:28 Interesting theory from the owner, explaining Matt's comment. For Matt's height to be the explanation of why he feels like he's sitting on the E92 instead of in it, wouldn't he have to somehow be shorter in the other cars to feel like he sits in them?
This car is one of my goals in life... Dude the car is DYING for a nice exhaust system!!! That strait 6 turbo must sound bonkers with some good piping!!! It is a bit on the heavy side but ohh well still bawlin and pimpin and a strait 6 direct injected turbo lol. Cant go wrong!
I like a shifter with a long throw if it is really good. If it's short, some of the good feeling is gone because you're in the next gear that much faster.
Also the 335i N54 is plagued with HPFP issues, carbon build up & turbo wastegate issues. The HPFP is under warranty for 120k miles & turbos for 80k miles. The carbon issue can be fixed with a "walnut blast" every 40k miles for $250ish. For anyone wondering about the 335i.
This guy is like a southern California version of me. He's got an 08 manual 335i with a somewhat rare interior color. I need some suspension work tho. Love my 335i.
Great series this is. just a suggestion though: maybe shoot a little bit more B-roll so you've got something to accompany the stuff you and the owner of the car are talking about :)
TheSmokingTire you should have shut the tune off to feel how different the car is on stock boost! When I tune off the tune on my car I'm amazed how used to higher boost I have become. My 135 feels down right slow with the factory rated 300 hp
Tires are so crucial. I had a set that was so worn out that if it was wet and i was on a hill I could barely get goin without some wheel spin. Then i got wider wheels and new Pirelli's it was like a completely dif car.
My buddy with a convertible e46 m3 spanks tuned 335's and even f series 335's "six ways to Sunday". When the have charge pipes, down pipes, and an intake. Then hey may or may not lose.
"Don't cheap out on your tires" Maybe when you live in the canyon! When you live in Indiana and have a 335xi I slap on some $70 a piece tires and call it a day. Never loose traction because my state is so flat.
Always loved Matt's take on cars, however I can't possibly understand why he thinks that there are no good aftermarket shifters. Maybe for Honda's that might be true, but its a fact that for BMW's, Subaru's and Mustang's there are several shifter upgrades that are light years away from stock.
IMO the biggest issue with the 335i is the open diff from the factory. If you stick to factory power and put on better tires it will be fine on dry pavement. Once you tune it or start driving in rain/snow that open diff becomes noticeable rather quickly. In terms of reliability they have a history of issues which have been (mostly) resolved in later models and newer part revisions. My 09 has 85k km's and it has only needed regular maintenance until now so I really can't complain. I can't wait until the weather gets nicer so I can fit a LSD and really put power down with it!
RingerRacing There are a couple options out there, Quaife, Wavetrack and MFactory make torque biasing units while OS Giken have their clutch based ones. If I was to track my 335i regularly I would go with the Giken unit at ~2,100$. But since I intend to track something else I'll settle on the Quaife or Wavetrack units which are around 1,200$ each. It really comes down to which one I can get to Canada the easiest without having to pay all sorts of taxes and whatnot.
I was wondering recently what that generation of 3 series would be like if you modified one of the I6 versions up to the same performance as the V8 M3. Might be pretty cool.
I still couldn't believe the respect of the other drivers you find, I'm starting to thing that is usual in LA, but here in spain everyone is angry if you catch them on the road...
i know im going to get hate from this but i wish i could have matt drive my 2012 tC. its a sick mountain run car as i huck it through the mountains here in CO. i may just have to drive to cali to drive some of these sweet mountain roads
Yo matt the n54 are going for 6-10k rn 10k gets you under 100k miles 6-9k gets you 102-177 miles i rather get in a n55 but the reality is if its been taken care of and the key points have been changed (HPFP, fuel injectors , gaskets, ) it should be good regardless i plan on getting one in december when the deals are even sweeter im a wrench monkey and i love to maintain my cars so it should be a fun journey enjoy yourself stay safe
theres an 07 328xi for 8k where i live, yeah its got a salvage title because it was a police seized car. it was used for smuggling drugs, therefore it has 178,000mi, id buy it just for its previous history;) but i took it for a test drive, and it still drives like a brand new car, it was amazing. haha
this is pretty much my car im going to get except with exhuast...maybe a little less suspension work and get an lsd instead and then a little more mods dc1 downpipes ect along with the jb4
Loved mine! I'd be interested to see how this one with all the suspension mods would feel! Mine was on JSK coilovers which were ALL FOR LOOK nothing for actual worthy suspension mods, lol. I had intakes/AA chargpipe+bov/jb4 (g5) e40 mix+muffler delete...car was no bitch. Very fun and probably TO DATE has been one of my favorite cars I've owned. But...reliability was an issue, especially if you don't have another car or a daily. Mine need bushings+pump isses+alternator belt assembly was messed up. All happened in like 15k miles :\.
Hey Matt, is this car on wheelwell? I'd love to see more about his set up. Getting N54 135i soon. Love these one takes. Keep em coming. Now, can you find me twisty canyon in Chicago?
Awesome review. I'd love to see Matt review a G35/G37S and see how it stacks up to one of these. I currently have a G35 coupe and have had my eye on either a 335i or 135i for a while now
I own a 535i N54 with full bolt ons, and I've driven both G35/G37s, and they just don't compare to the N54 engine, I've even raced a Stillen supercharged G35 and still won.
yes sir Oh I know haha. I wouldn't dare try a 35i if we happened to be on a closed course in Mexico. I was more so referring to the driving dynamics and which one is more fun to drive. I think BMW started leaning more towards refinement with the E90 and later generations whereas Infinitis are a little more raw in comparison.
As far as driving dynamics and fun to drive ... I still say bmw . full torque at 1400 to 5000 rpm vs Infiniti at red line. So normal city driving the n54 feels like it just wants to taketake off. Infiniti thousands of dollars in the vq and maybe 20 hp more . while jb4 in the bmw you get like 80hp. Only fail on bmw part is no lsd. Check my video of going to trade my Infiniti in. And don't make the same mistake I did.. Just get the bimmer from the start..
No good aftermarket shifters for BMWs? I have a UUC Evo3 with DSSR on my e46, and it is the shit. Notchy, that's for sure, but it's very precise and really fun to run. I'd agree that without an aftermarket shift rod though, putting an aftermarket shifter does nothing; the shift rod's design just makes everything more sloppy, not matter how short.
This dude actually drives his car as opposed to just going to meets at sonic and roll racing on the hwy.
christians131 "sonic meets and roll racing on the hwy" lol.
"Auto tuned like Lil Wayne"
Proceeds to do Lil John impression...
Facepalm
We love you Matt keep em coming!
ap2pat I think if Tupac were alive today, he'd hate current rap music.
TheSmokingTire You think? shit I know lol. Its garbage.
+TheSmokingTire danny brown, run the jewels, school boy q? no? all bad?
Lol was thinking same thing
Cody Thompson Hey just came back to say I saw school boy Q on nightly show. He was dope 4 sure.
that lil wayne impression 10/10
Man, there's just something about a clean ass BMW that just makes my day. I got excited when I saw the thumbnail. Nice car, Bro!
///M Power!
Same, there's something subtle about them, like they know what they can do, so they don't go around screaming about it.
BXRchampion1993 Yeah i feel ya, except this isn't an M car.
335i not an m3
Watching the past few videos; people always pull over and let Matt (faster traffic) by. Its incredible. i hope one day to experience reasonable, intelligent, considerate drivers.
owner of this car, if you are reading this, thank you for doing proper suspension and tire modifications. i salute you for actually using your coilovers as specified.
Always loved the N54/N55 cars, wish to get one someday.
go with the n54!
It's reliability (HPFP etc.) greatly concerns me lol
i've been running jb4 and E-85 from 65,000-120,000 Miles and no problems, did have my electric water pump die though, that was $900
also driving it really really hard
Michael Hadzicki You've made a compelling case haha.
Got my 335i E92 for 9k. 103k on the dash. Garage kept and BMW maintained. Love that damn car.
I gotta 08 335xi e90 same color but brushed silver wheels. Favorite car ever
You know what I love about TST? No biases! Like for real, this dude just loves cars and appreciates every aspect of a car! Thanks for the entertaining reviews!
These bmw have always been such a sleeper car to me I mean everyone thinks m3 but the n54 and n55 are badass machines great review matt!
The BMW 335i is a amazing machine
Matt drank to much coffee the morning of this video haha
Matt's Lil Wayne impression was golden
Absolutely perfect. Finally a guy who knows his stuff.
For usable 'speed', these 335i's mostly need suspension upgrades, next to a simple stage 1 ecu tune.
I've owned an e92 330D for about a year. It's no 335i, that's for sure ... but it was a great car none the less.
M-sport suspension, sattel braun interior with black headliner (just part of the M-sport package). I loved it. IMHO, it looks better than the new 4 series, but that's just IMHO.
Totally agree, the new M4 looks way too big and had too many lines.
330D? whats the torque on that beast?
Exata1337 in ft-lbs ... 385 before chipping it, and a little under 520 after. Enough of it, for sure, lol.
detaart
daaamn :o
got a e90 320D myself, even for such a small engine i feel like it kicks pretty hard. but damn, you're packing over double the amount of torque in yours :D
Suggest it to anyone who wants an All-in-One car.
nice. traded my fbo e92 335 for a c7 and was happy to hear you did all the suspension work. Changes the handling in a really nice way.
I love my 335i twin turbo :)
I'm getting mine chipped next week to run 386bhp :)
Does it brake down a lot?
This 335 is on point! I love the red interior and 6mt with nav! Like dude said that is rare. So hard to find one of those! Especially with the color combo you want!
I love the one takes! really gives the videos a new light!
I had one of these for for 6 years. Man what a great car. Before getting a evo or sti, try one of these out guys youll love it, its the perfect balancing of luxury and performance. Also with a little tune it turns into a straight monster! used 335 and 135s are the best deals ever. but you have stay on top of them ! and be able to do some mechanic stuff yourself if you can. but i know people with evo xs and stis and its the same deal. pay 2 play. but man was this car a monster. miss her to this day
Wow .. what a beast! Would love to upgrade my 325i E46 to this one day!
Did it happen?
Guy says most of the mods are suspension, and Matt goes on and on about the engine.
Great review, guys.
My buddy used to have a full bolt on 335i n54. Shit pulled hard!!! Love these cars.
I have a full bolt on e92 335i and it is truly a wonderful all around car, as Matt was saying.
This is a tastefully modified example. Well done
I love my 335i, winter here now just throw on some snow tires and still great. Almost sold it and glad I didn't
I like my '07 335. Its really good fun to throw around country roads.
Bought my e90 335i for $10,500, salvaged title can't beat it. Great project car
He did his BMW well. I'm told that the character of the E92 335i is unlike anything else!
Great review! My father has one of these and I can agree with everything you pointed out. Only downside is the occasional turbo issue but they're not bad. Great cars, the 6MT is well worth the search. Wakes up the car considerable amount compared to the paddles.
This guy was really cool and has a sweet ride, wish more BMW owners were like him!
Don't worry bout the owners lol that's a little gay. Just care about the Beemers!
about time!!! always wanted to see his first take on a e92
I think this guy really set this car up right overall.
TheSmokingTire Matt - Great series !! I love hearing about how other drivers set-up their cars... Just great info !!
I really like what he's done with this one, minus the M3 replica bumper (personal taste). The only other thing I'd add is a limited slip differential. AFAIK they sold all non-Ms with an open diff except for the 335is. Which is a shame because any regular 335i could benefit from it I think.
That car totally has an exhaust on it or at least an axleback or something. The pipes on the back are huge!
Couldn't tell it was on coilovers(no apparent stiff bounce), but looked planted. They must be set-up properly...rarely seen.
The BEST mod to this car is a LSD, mores than just upping the boost. It already make a lot of TQ, it seriously needs help putting it all down.
fuuuuck ahaha. I'm currently in dilemma between M3 or 335is. M3 is nice but rod bearing and low torque. 335is is pretty perfect tbh but no LSD.
@@JackRR15 then get a 335xi
Haha funfun. I just dumped 15 grand in engine upgrades in my 335i (hybrid turbos, comp fmic, tial q, and dual oil coolers, dp's occ, oil therm, pcv, check valve, jb4 g5 + dual meth. 6spd manual 2007 e90 335i n54) Theres a bunch more goodies too :) 550hp 600tq at rear wheels. I submitted the credit app and talked to a guy at the dealer that morning. Another salesman sold it 10 minutes before I got there. It had the nav too. It was beautiful. And gone right out from under me.
Miadous it's ok u really want 09 and less miles anyway
"only 94k miles"
What a tired old thing. Would never drive (let alone buy anything with more than 30k.
ToxicDonut81 now u sound like a snob...
I will sell you my 2007 335xi with 59k miles for $11k, 6spd manual! No nav though.

TheSmokingTire With the JB4 on the 335i you are looking at 400ish HP & TQ without an exhaust & FMIC. This car is close to a Dinan 1M.
DirtDude117 Where the hell do you get a walnut blast completed for $250ish??
genebf88 Independent shops. I've paid $250-600 for at some places, but the lowest was $250
This guy is like a southern California version of me. He's got an 08 manual 335i with a somewhat rare interior color. I need some suspension work tho. Love my 335i.
Got an 07 with COBB tune... love that N54 torque!
Love this series!
This car is definitely on my list to check out once I'm ready to buy a new car, but those maintenance and repair costs are kinda scary.
Great series this is. just a suggestion though: maybe shoot a little bit more B-roll so you've got something to accompany the stuff you and the owner of the car are talking about :)
I own a 08 E90 335i with a jb4 and it hauls ass. Love it.
Valentine One, hardwired off the RVM. Pro.
TheSmokingTire you should have shut the tune off to feel how different the car is on stock boost! When I tune off the tune on my car I'm amazed how used to higher boost I have become. My 135 feels down right slow with the factory rated 300 hp

Hoping to see that E36 on here soon!
Would love to see a shootout between a 335 and a 135. Two of the most bang for the buck enthusiast cars right now
My buddy with a convertible e46 m3 spanks tuned 335's and even f series 335's "six ways to Sunday". When the have charge pipes, down pipes, and an intake. Then hey may or may not lose.
"soliciting random enthusiasts on the internet" sounds sexual lol
You meant T-pain I'm assuming.
.
Fail troll is fail
Mike Morehouse
no he meant lil wayne who also does alot of auto tuning. Although the "yeaahh" comment was in reference to Lil John, not lil wayne.
I can't wait until the weather gets nicer so I can fit a LSD and really put power down with it!
which lsd will you go with and how much is the part?
RingerRacing There are a couple options out there, Quaife, Wavetrack and MFactory make torque biasing units while OS Giken have their clutch based ones. If I was to track my 335i regularly I would go with the Giken unit at ~2,100$. But since I intend to track something else I'll settle on the Quaife or Wavetrack units which are around 1,200$ each. It really comes down to which one I can get to Canada the easiest without having to pay all sorts of taxes and whatnot.
You should try the AC Schnitzer short shift, it's incredible!
I can't find a good, clean manual 335 for the life of me
the DCT e92 is also really good.
i had to travel 2 states over to get mine LOL.
Doesn't the DCT only come as an option for the 335is?
Same all I see is automatic or 328
Rob lol
im looking at getting one of these, they are down to £6000 in the uk
+Shane Draper 25.000£+ in Denmark...
Shane Draper down to 5k in cali lol
Love my 335i, great car!
Love that m3 bumper & wheels
Better than a fiesta mat
?
I was wondering recently what that generation of 3 series would be like if you modified one of the I6 versions up to the same performance as the V8 M3. Might be pretty cool.
Matt you should consider putting the year of the car's in the title of video's it makes it easier your people.
Mqtt im amazzed u havent crashed yet! keep it up lol!
theres an 07 328xi for 8k where i live, yeah its got a salvage title because it was a police seized car. it was used for smuggling drugs, therefore it has 178,000mi, id buy it just for its previous history;) but i took it for a test drive, and it still drives like a brand new car, it was amazing. haha
this is pretty much my car im going to get except with exhuast...maybe a little less suspension work and get an lsd instead and then a little more mods dc1 downpipes ect along with the jb4
Are there just no cops on this road? like whats the speed limit?
Been waiting for Matt to review a n54...!
i see that white GTR in every video up Piuma. Are they with TST? or just another enthusiast who loves that run?
Hey Matt, is this car on wheelwell? I'd love to see more about his set up. Getting N54 135i soon. Love these one takes. Keep em coming. Now, can you find me twisty canyon in Chicago?
and I felt ridiculous driving almost 2 hours for an 07 e92 with 40k and 6spd with nav this guy went to friggin texas!
6:21 Respect for that guy
Awesome review. I'd love to see Matt review a G35/G37S and see how it stacks up to one of these. I currently have a G35 coupe and have had my eye on either a 335i or 135i for a while now
i have owned a g37s. It feels very slow compared to the bmw.
I own a 535i N54 with full bolt ons, and I've driven both G35/G37s, and they just don't compare to the N54 engine, I've even raced a Stillen supercharged G35 and still won.
Alex Nestertsov agree. Somehow they started getting compared to one another .
yes sir Oh I know haha.
I am really considering one of these.
"Tell me about your car"... "mostly stock"........*next*
seriously what a fucktard lol, mostly stock but starts to mention alll the mods...
***** Would you say that a majority of the parts on this car are aftermarket. No? Then it's mostly fucking stock.
well stock means it hasnt been touched, and he changed a some parts...
Skylar Garrett What he means is why did the guy bother saying it was stock at all if he then started to list his mods.
"Mostly stock" in this car means it still has over 100hp and tq more than stock and all m3 suspension? That's a nice car this thing flies
Thumbs up for the Suburban driver!
Just like my E92 I love them ☺
