small tip, fabricate some hanger like devices so you can spray the whole thing at once. I use some copper wire or a hanger that's cut up. you can hang them from a ladder or a tree or anything really. I used to use a ladder that bends into a scaffold to hang my freshly painted car parts.
Great video! I have sprayed steel before but it was always on small parts that didn't need to be pretty. Now I am refurbishing an arcade and the coin door was painting improperly and has some serious rust from sitting in a garage for 5-6 years. Wish me luck.

So.... about how much surface area can you coat with one can of paint? I have a set of old metal school lockers I want to paint for my daughter to use for a "dresser".
Good God. Great advice and steps. Everything is correct besides your actual painting skills. Keep the same distance, in a straight plane. All the way through from one side to the other. Back and forth, repeat. That was hard to watch.
Hi I am wanting to paint a chrome shower riser white. I see you have said painting Stainless steel is not very successful, does the same go for chrome? Would sanding it down first with emery paper then primer be reasonably successful do you think.
It depends on the top coat that you are using, some paints require a clear lacquer to go over the top. Your top coat paint will say if it requires a primer or not.
It's not a durable finish, so if the item you are spraying will be handled, there is a chance that it will chip. Powder coating might be a better option, for things that will be handled.

Hi, I want to paint a metal bed frame which is brand new and painted white. Do I need to strip off the existing white paint? Or do you think I would be good to prime and paint the colour of my choice. How would you do it? Thanks in advance :)
Thank you for this video! It was extremely helpful! I need some additional advice. I have a brand new heavy gauge galvanized steel mailbox. I am planning to paint a landscape scene on it and then it will be installed outdoors and exposed to the elements. It currently has a black rust resistant powder coat finish. I will be using acrylic paint and I I was planning to clean the metal with rubbing alcohol before painting. My questions are: do I have to apply a primer first? And what kind of sealant should I apply when I'm finished? Thanks in advance for your help!!
Spraying inverted to clear the nozzle wastes gas and eventually the gas will run out and there is still paint left in the can. I had this happen to me, I after every use did the inverted spray and after some time the gas run out and had still paint inside. So I think it is better to refer from doing this, and if the nozzle gets clogged just submerge it in paint thinner to clean it, I think rustoleum cans say to do this if the nozzle gets clogged
I invert the can all the time and rarely run out of propellant, they tell you to invert the can and spray it to stop the nozzle from blocking. Thanks for the comment 👍
But never use brake cleaner to clean something you're going to weld. Usually contains Tetrachloroethylene. It may decompose to phosgene if welded. Phosgene is incredibly toxic, so even a tiny amount from a small bit of residue from the cleaner could kill you.

Hi just a couple of questions! I want to restore some gym equipment how would you prep it? Would you just lightly sand or would you go further and get as much paint off as possible? Would it be a good idea to use a clear coat on top of the top coat? Where in the uk sells this paint? Thanks Ps great videos!
+Luap 1983 I'd just lightly sand it, the clean it using methylated spirits. Then prime it all and then a top coat. I would not bother with a clear coat on top, as long as you use a good quality paint such as Rustoleum. I bought mine from ebay ;-) Thanks for the comment
When painting a vehicle, people normally use the thinners that they are going to use to thin the paint. I guess you could use methylated spirits, but thinners would be preferred 👍
I'm trying to spray paint a flat aluminum bar. Is it okay if I bought the Rust-oLeum 2x ultra cover semi-gloss black??? I want it to be a fashionable shine.

Hi @UltimateHandyman, I purchased this clothing rack made out of steel coated in bronze epoxy (www.sevilleclassics.com/Resin-expandable-closet-organizer-SHE16199B), but I would like to spray paint over it in white. Is it possible and if so what kind of paint should I use? Also I found this Rust-Oleum 'Appliance Epoxy Spray' (www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/specialty/appliance-epoxy-spray), would this work? Thanks!
Yes, providing it is paint and not been powder coated. You should just be able to clean the existing paint using methylated spirits (denatured alcohol), then after 10 minutes give it a top coat of rustoleum 👍
Do I have to sand the pre-painted metal (gloss with no rust, flaking, or blemishes) before applying rustoleum ultra cover 2x gloss over it? or am i fine with just overlaying with the spray paint.
I used the exact same primer and paint on my car seat runners where they get rusty. Primer went on great but the top coat won't adhere and small circles appear. I've cleaned and prepped, what's wrong??
Not sure, normally I would say that the surface is contaminated, but that is unlikely if the primer adhered properly. Have you tried the top coat on a different surface? Perhaps it is a faulty tin or something. Thanks for the comment
You absolutely need an organic vapor respirator mask with these sprays. Even when working outside in windy weather. Or you will sleep funny at night. The smells is really strong volatile vapors. The mask will make you breath like in a virgin forest.
Hi all, I want to re-paint the top plate of my vintage stereo receiver because it has a few scratches. My question is do I need to sand the old black color before applying the primer (like remove ALL of the old color or just cleaning will do)? Thanks to anyone for advice... BTW, the video is very good, I feel comfortable trying this on my own now!
If the scratches are deep, it is best to feather them out using some fine abrasive paper, then clean it all with methylated spirits before applying the primer. If you don't sand out the scratches, they will still be visible after painting. Thanks for the comment
Not for a job like this, but if you are doing a £5000 paint job on a vehicle you might want to use fine wet and dry paper between coats- but then you would not be using a tin of spray paint for that. Thanks for the comment 👍

My advice is grab a few because next thing you want them on everything LOL
Oil spray e.t.c very very handy to have. :)
do u need to spray clear coat if you have spray primer?
It depends on the top coat that you are using, some paints require a clear lacquer to go over the top. Your top coat paint will say if it requires a primer or not.
ok
Does it chip easily
It's not a durable finish, so if the item you are spraying will be handled, there is a chance that it will chip.
Powder coating might be a better option, for things that will be handled.

If it's going to get scratched, powder coating might be a better option, as it is much more durable.

Hey, i want to paint my metal weight plates, i was wondering if i have know the propersteps, first i wire brush all the rust away and then use mineral spirits, and then a primer and hammer paint, and should i finish it with a lacquer? i would appreciate it if u responded(:
Hi just a couple of questions!
I want to restore some gym equipment how would you prep it? Would you just lightly sand or would you go further and get as much paint off as possible?
Would it be a good idea to use a clear coat on top of the top coat?
Where in the uk sells this paint?
Thanks
Ps great videos!
+Luap 1983
I'd just lightly sand it, the clean it using methylated spirits. Then prime it all and then a top coat. I would not bother with a clear coat on top, as long as you use a good quality paint such as Rustoleum. I bought mine from ebay ;-)
Thanks for the comment
+Ultimate Handyman that's great thank you for the fast response.
I’d like to paint a car panel that’s been sanded to bare metal is it ok to use mentholated spirits to clean before primer thanks
When painting a vehicle, people normally use the thinners that they are going to use to thin the paint. I guess you could use methylated spirits, but thinners would be preferred 👍
Nice video. How long does it take for the surface primer to dry?
It depends on the air temperature/humidity etc.
Normally it is touch dry in a few minutes, but not fully dry for a couple of hours.
I'm trying to spray paint a flat aluminum bar. Is it okay if I bought the Rust-oLeum 2x ultra cover semi-gloss black??? I want it to be a fashionable shine.
Preston Willis
Yes, that should be fine as long as you follow the instructions on the can ;-)
Might be able to tell my tools from my youngest adversaries' now!
👍
As a US American it's so cool to hear a Manchester accent relating to metal. Best knives I own are Sheffield steel.
What’s the chemical you cleaned it with first?
Methylated spirits, knows as denatured alcohol in some countries 👍
Anyone know if u should clear coat the paint job or just paint it?
As long as you use a decent paint, you should not need to apply a clear coat on top
Thanks for the comment 👍
Hi I want to paint a black metal bed frame white would this paint work on that too
It depends. The bed might have been powder coated, rather than painted.
It's probably best if you just test it out on a inconspicuous area first ;-)
You might also need a couple of coats when covering black
Thanks for the comment 👍
Should of hung brackets up with wire through drilled holes.
It's a bit late now
Thanks for the comment 👍
Wanna prep and spray my rear drum brakes in a gloss black but will be subject to jet washing any ideas on on ideal paint to use that will last under jet wash and driving ? Thanks
I'd get them powder coated to be honest. I think most paints will eventually fail, unless it's been baked on.
@@ultimatehandyman thank you
can I clean my metal with ether/starting fluid?
Not sure, if that will leave a residue behind 🤔
how about if i want to paint a snowmobile tunnel and not put a sled wrap on would that work like i want to keep the metal look but i want it blue
you can get paint and primer in one can for about the same price
Yes, you can.
You can also but tile adhesive and grout in one tub, but I would never use it.
Dedicated primer and top coat works much better IMHO ;-)
Did this to my door hinges and knobs. The color is great but the striker plate is scratching up. I'm guessing that no matter what paint you use it will scratch up badly (Since metal on metal contact).
Yes, I do not know of any paint that will not scratch in such a situation.
Thanks for the comment 👍
Should I spray varnish on top of the paint to protect the paint?
It should not need it, but if you are going to, I would use clear lacquer 👍
what do you do when it stops lasting after 4 years?
You can give it a light sanding, clean with methylated spirits and recoat it?
What are the dry times between coats of primer as well as between primer and paint?
Great tutorial, love the accent. Quick question: is a good paint job electrically conductive? My application requres some insulation around the metal. Thanks.
for painting aluminum : " home depot" paint salesperson said to use " paint WITH PRIMER" spray. is the currently available "paint with primer" = primer application, than paint?
i'm confused what to use. please help.
thanks ! amir
They probably mean to prime the aluminium first using a primer coat, then when that is dry apply a top coat- just like in this video ;-)
Thumbs up just for the accent itself 😀
Some people hate my accent 😂
Thanks for the comment 👍
can I use this to paint over new metal that already has a paint coat? I bought a power rack but don't like the color of some parts
You can paint over most paints using this, provided the rack has not been powder coated (I do not know if powder coating can be painted over) 👍
@@ultimatehandyman what can you use to paint over powder coat?
I've never done it before, but this might help- bit.ly/42aFnVj
Hi @UltimateHandyman, I purchased this clothing rack made out of steel coated in bronze epoxy (www.sevilleclassics.com/Resin-expandable-closet-organizer-SHE16199B), but I would like to spray paint over it in white. Is it possible and if so what kind of paint should I use?
Also I found this Rust-Oleum 'Appliance Epoxy Spray' (www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/specialty/appliance-epoxy-spray), would this work?
Thanks!
+Jeanine Estucado I think that should work, as long as you follow the instructions ;-)
What paint should I use to paint a steel bulkhead can I roll or brush on rust oleum paint
Yes, you can use a brush or a roller. I painted the bench in my workshop using Rustoleum and used a 4 inch gloss roller 👍
@@ultimatehandyman I grabbed a rattle can of primer but a can of rust oleum black gloss for finish thanks
Can you use this on previously painted steel that has a gloss finish? What sort of prep would you recommend. Thanks for the video.
+Lily Cheung No, There is no need to sand, you can just paint right over sound surfaces.

I got a question dude, so sanding is not need after the primer? Are you sure?
Not for a job like this, but if you are doing a £5000 paint job on a vehicle you might want to use fine wet and dry paper between coats- but then you would not be using a tin of spray paint for that.
Thanks for the comment 👍
Ultimate Handyman okey thanks man👍🏻
You only painted part of the bracket.
You can only see part of the bracket ;-)
Thanks for the comment 👍
Great video. You deserve a million views!! Well done!
Thanks! 😃

Can I paint my metal plate rack that has gone rusty like this? Will it still be safe health wise to use? Thanks.
I am looking for a red, anti corrosive primer, soluble in meths and to be applied by brush. What would you recon on the UK market?
