  • How to Paint Bare Metal that will Not Peal or Chip & Will Last for Years.
I contacted the Rust-Oleum Company to get clear instructions on how to paint galvanized hinges that will not peal, scratch or chip. They said I needed a special primer to do this job... otherwise the paint would not adhere to the metal.
In this video I will show you the procedure I used to paint these galvanized hinges. I will also show you how they are holding up after 3 years of outdoor use.
I hope this video helps you with your upcoming bare metal painting project.

I did the same thing when I painted my hooks on my tractor bucket. Also, Rust-Oleum has an 800 number (on each can) and they are very helpful when preparing to do a quality painting project...

Rustoleum also makes the "Self Etching Primer" that will likely protect the metal even more and of course as a primer will adhere very well to the top coat of paint, consider also using a clear coat to make the metal color to last even longer.

Depends on the paint you are using. I used rust oleum and their customer service techs are very knowledgeable and helpful. I would check with the manufacturer of the paint you’re using. I did not use a sealer and it has almost been four years and the hinges still look Great with no chipping or peeling

I do the same thing except clean all bare metals with acetone first. When painting automotive or motorcycle parts it's imperative you get the paint as stuck to the metal as possible.

I've painted the metal rod from the saddle ( got it to bare metal, wiped with alcohol and applied primer). When i insert it, the small friction chips the paint away. Any idea? I've tried 2 brands of primer and its the same. Since the metal was rusted and not brand new, could that mean i need a different type of primer?

Depends on the temperature and dewpoint or humidity. But just a couple minutes typically

That's your comparison???? A hitch that is connected to chains and used to possibly pull tons of weight, to a hinge no one will ever touch again???

It’s no longer Bare Metal if it coated with Primer. Galvanized plating should be primed with a Self Etching Primer for longer lasting results.
