  • In response to many questions he receives from falconers, Martin sat down with Helen the Peregrine Falcon to provide an overview to some of the most common questions he receives. Underlining all training aspects is an understanding of the psychology of falconry and what motivates apex predators. They are extremely intelligent and opportunistic. Martin explains how understanding this, and working with this, is the key to mutually respectful and enjoyable relationship. As Martin has said many times before about Harris Hawk Belle, "She is the hunter and I am her dog."

    Our Mission
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
    Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
    Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
    Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

Sir, it is your compassion, love and dedication to our raptors that will forever be embedded in our hearts and souls. One individual does makes a positive impact, hope and difference in a world that is filled full of negativity. Your beacon shines brightly in our world of wildlife and falconry. As a wildlife advocate, your theory of positive reinforcement is an exceptional philosophy. Thank your wife, staff and you for sharing and caring.

I really think, in order to find the patience for working with these birds, you have to be in love with them and think they're just the greatest thing since sliced bread! You can find endless patience for something you really love! Birds of prey are particularly majestic, but I've experienced that feeling you were talking about in a smaller way with a feral cat that I've been working with for about 9 months, every time he voluntarily walks in my open door while i'm fixing his dinner. Yesterday, he let me swing the door almost shut behind him, didn't bolt and ate inside, it was quite the vote of confidence! Now, if he would just stand still for a flea collar, we'd be in business!

    • @GowildlifeOrg

      Patience and commitment for sure

Ha! (high-fives) You remind me of a feral/stray cat that I had adopted (had sneaked into someone's house in Amsterdam and was living in the attic; person had called a foundation to catch the cat and mentioned it to me. I wanted to give it a go and did). Apparently had gotten lost during someone's move, is what they reckoned, but many months ago (more than 6). Would not accept my other cat. I was living in a small flat. Took me nine months, step by step, to turn her around. Just when I felt it might be time to give up, she came around. She was so wild at first and so confused. Poor thing.
No longer having animals of my own, I can now rehab the occasional bird. (Got into that in the mid 1990s when I was living in Florida.) Yesterday evening, I had my first real beak bleed when I tried to trim a bit off instead of continuing to file with only an emory board; my hands ended up shaking, terrified she might bleed to death. (The bird undoubtedly noticed, which probably helped convey that it was an accident, in retrospect. Or at least not a threat to her.) I had conferred with a vet, thinking that it might be best to do this with a vet observing or at a practice, in case something went wrong, but he seemed to think it was okay to do it on my own. I'd barely touched the bill. The bleeding stopped, thankfully, and the bird almost demonstratively started eating and preening afterward. So far so good, fingers crossed. The bird is very intelligent, which helps, but also still has a lot of recovery to do (lost lots of feathers so needs to grow new feathers and her gut tissues need more healing too). It would have been great to have brought her beak a little closer to what it should be. (Though it's much better than it was.) Bird's been with me since the end of May. I'd witnessed and dealt with a beak bleed before but nothing as bad as this. Never again. I learned my lesson of human arrogance. I'll stick with emory boards.
I'll watch the video later. Had some bird psychology to figure out earlier this week, with the same bird. If you take into account how they live and what they do and what we do and small changes we sometimes apply without noticing (and read up and watch videos like these), you can step into their shoes a bit and try to see where they are coming from. It can help a lot. Sometimes, when you see contradictory behaviors, it can mean that something psychological plays a role.
You posted this a month ago, Fran. Any luck?

Specially the part of not breaking the animals nor the people. I love all creatures and although I understand birds need yo eat rabbits, I appreciate very much that the volume was down while the rabbit was caught. Dude, you are awesome and full of excellent experience. The Dog just about made me spit out my mouthful of water, xD
Your dogs multi colored stripe reminds me of the time when my 2 brothers and I took Mom and our Sisters non-toxic bingo daubers and made our mini weenie dog into a custom paint job neighborhood race car for a few days..I mean Cleatus (our min weenie dog's name) had a bold racing stripe, #7 on both his sides, different size colored polka dots here and there, different colored ears tail and feet. We were rolling tears watching him run around, acting tough and trying to chase cars inside the fence, a few drivers slowed down and stopped, hella laughing at the sight. ah good times. =D

Can one hunt with a falcon or hawk & still use dogs to scare up game &/or retrieve game the hawk or falcon kills? In films showing Arabian hunters hunting with falcons there are often many dogs used, as well as the birds.

I think little souvenir Hoods like the ones you made for your bird would be a neat idea for fundraising purposes not one you could really use but just a little nice item for bird lovers maybe the size of each of your birds with their names on the one that resembles each birds Favorite Hood they are nice i think that would be awesome you could sell them at Events, Dinners , at your local library you could advertise them oh and for Belles hood you can place tiny jingle bells on the top And Because its fir a Fundraiser you could charge a good amount im nit saying to rip people off but in my opinion whenever its a Fundraiser I honestly think people don't mind donating especially when you get a nice souvenir in return you could charge 25 to 30 dollars ...I just thought it was a neat new Idea to help kerp your Facility up and running GOD BLESS YOU MARTIN AND SUE

There are more ruined horses than good ones. People just don’t get it. Even the top barns. I think narcs are especially attracted to equines. I won’t even own a horse I have not bred myself, or has come out of the wild untouched by humans. People ruin everything. I am a long time trainer and farrier and have seen more than my share of human ignorance and cruelty.
